This Way Up Career changes, breakthroughs and lessons from the Word of God. By Eunice Tan

Making the Switch T

he talent scout approached the father of a seven-year-old boy in the toy department of a retail store in Los Angeles.

Photography Timothy Tan Model Jim Yip

“We’re holding the audition tomorrow in Beverly Hills for children his age,” the scout said. Bemused, the father took the business card from the outstretched hand. The last thing he expected from a routine trip to buy household items was to be approached by a talent scout less than 48 hours after arriving from Australia. Then again, this was LA. The family arrived on time for the audition to find a queue stretching out the door of the building and along the pavement. Anxious parents hovered near their children, clutching professional portfolio shots of their kids. The children themselves were busy memorising lines from a sheet handed out by the casting assistants. Clearly the family was out of their league. Still recovering from jetlag and adjusting to a new country, all they had with them was a passport photo of their son. Yet out of the 300 children who auditioned, their son was one of only eight children given the opportunity for a“big break” when he received a callback.

Career Change Actors often speak of that chance discovery, or a defining performance that brings a career breakthrough after years of unemployment and anonymity. Such breakthroughs are not confined to the realm of Hollywood however. In our everyday work-life, career breakthroughs also occur, from securing our first permanent job, to achieving our first promotion, and even to implementing a successful career change.

skills such as organisation, leadership, management, planning, communication, training and interpersonal skills, apply to a wide range of jobs.

Jesus didn’t expect Simon Peter and Andrew to succeed in their“career change” alone. As the ultimate mentor, he told them,“Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”.

Identify the skills needed in the profession you wish to move into and match the transferable skills applicable to the new career.

Promote Your Passion “At once they left their nets and followed him.” – Mark 1:18 (NIV)

Simon Peter and his brother Andrew had a“career change” from fishermen to fishers of men. But transferable skills such as discipline, teamwork, enlisting help, and the ability to assess situations, still applied in their new work environment.

Don’t Go it Alone “Come, follow me,” Jesus said … - Mark 1:17 (NIV)

Seek out mentors or join associations. People with the industry knowledge, experience and key contacts can help direct you on the best way to proceed in your career change.

When Simon Peter and Andrew put down their nets“at once” to become fishers of men, was it an impulsive move, or a display of passion, focus and commitment to a new course in their lives? You want employers to view your career change as a positive move, not a rash decision or the result of a lack of focus in life. Consider including a well thought-out career objective in your cover letter or resumé to show recruiters that your career change is part of a longer-term career goal.

Bible Breakthroughs

“So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon … Then Pharaoh said to Joseph … ‘You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders … I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt’.” Genesis 41:14, 39-41(NIV)

Put Your Transferable Skills to Work.

Ruth, a migrant worker and lowly gleaner caught the eye of a wealthy landowner.

Don’t waste the skills you’ve acquired through volunteer work, study, sport or hobbies. Transferable

The bible records plenty of “big breaks” and promotion breakthroughs.

In today’s marketplace, many workers no longer subscribe to the“one job for life” career plan. With more of us changing direction on the career highway, how can we break through to a successful career change?

Jesus … saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.“Come, follow me,” Jesus said,“and I will make you fishers of men.” – Mark 1:16-17 (NIV)

Joseph went from prisoner to ruler of Egypt.

“Now there was a wealthy and influential man in Bethlehem named Boaz … Ruth

went out to gather grain behind the harvesters. And as it happened, she found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz” - Ruth 2:1,3 (NLT)

David went from shepherd boy to king.

“This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.” – 1 Chronicles 17:7 (NIV) breakthrough 23
