GOOD LOOKING AND CLEVER The work of Impero Design
Impero began with one client, one laptop, in a one bedroom flat.
I worked day and night and my one client grew to two, then before long it was three, then all of sudden it was four, then five, then seven.
By 2009 Impero was a small team working for big brands - Pernod Ricard, Hilton Hotels, Video Ezy, Deutz, Westin Hotels, Accor Hospitality, Melview Developments and others.
We had growing into a highly respected and creative firm that went from making cold calls to a phone that ran hot.
It has been easily the most fun I had ever had, so five years on from the start I thought we should put together something to look back at what we have achieved and to say thanks to those who made it possible.
So here you have it, Good Looking and Clever - the work of Impero Design, ~ Michael Scantlebury
Senses Spa / The Westin Auckland. In 2007 the Westin Hotel opened its doors and asked us to help establish the five star luxury hotel in the NZ market. Part of our roll was to create brands for their three food and beverage outlets and Senses Spa, their new Thai inspired Spa.
Corbans Wines The Corbans wine brand is one of the oldest in New Zealand. Unfortunately when we were first introduced to them, so was their website. This job really opened the door for us at Pernod Ricard, Corbans’ parent company, and its still one of our favourite pieces of work we did for them - especially because it meant we got to work with Kate (who has to be one of the loveliest brand managers in the world).
Flicks.co.nz We’ve been involved with this company since its inception, creating the brand, stationary and most recently the complete site re-design. It’s been a great brand to work with because the shareholders* are some of the best looking and clever people * you’ll ever meet. Disclaimer: Michael is a shareholder in Flicks
Melview Developments Paul from Nigel McKenna’s Melview Developments rang us one afternoon and said “Right, listen up! We need a new hospitality umbrella brand that will contain four new hotel brands and we need all of them in three weeks!”. In typical Paul style the only other advice was “Oh, and they must be fabulous!”. So the McKenna Group, Fabric, Mint, The Landmark and The Boutique Collection was born. The first of which, The Fabric Hotel Queenstown, is due to open in 2010.

McKenna Group To help launch the McKenna Group to investors we created a publication that introduced each brand, its story and its place in the market.
Stoneleigh One of Pernod Ricard’s corner stone wine brands. It was recently re-launched with a new brand story. We were charged with creating a new website to align their online presence with their offline activities.
Frame Black Murphy UK Ltd (AKA Pip & Joan) launched Frame Studio on an unexpecting London city in 2009. This was one of our first London clients and easily one of the most fun brands we had the pleasure of working with.
The Quadrant Hotel Working alongside Republik we were charged with creating almost every piece of online and offline marketing including for the The Quadrant Hotel since preopening including the hugely successful website.
Our work with didn’t go unnoticed. In 2008 The Quadrant Hotel was awarded the top prize in the Emerging Business category of the Official New Zealand Mar keting Awards with special mention given to our work.
Molly Malones Rabbit Creative a Wellington based branding agency had been working on the re-branding of Molly Malones Irish Eatery. They asked us to design and build a new website to coincide with the brand launch.
Menus.co.nz For the online restaurant guide Menus.co.nz, Impero created the brand and product (website), business stationary and all marketing pieces until it was successfully acquired By APN, Australasia’s largest media company in 2008.
Marin Bosley’s Yacht Club Restaurant Soon after we launched this website, MBYCR were announced as Cuisine Magazine’s Restaurant of The Year. Now, we’re not saying our work had any direct relationship to them winning this prestigious prize, but if some of that limelight does happen to reflect our way - we’ll happily bask in.
Lindauer Lindauer’s 25th Birthday was a big deal in NZ, because kiwi’s absolutely love the stuff! So much so, it is statically the highest selling item in supermarkets in the week before Christmas. This site was created along “Kiwiana” themes to help promote the offline advertisement campaign and POS promotions.
Video Ezy It’s always great for the ego when really large brands want you to work with them.Video Ezy is the biggest dvd/video rental brand in NZ and Australia. After they saw our work on Flicks.co.nz they asked us to create for them a new website that allowed their customers to browse their dvd collections, watch online previews and become involved with the brand. The site was a huge success, doubling their traffic in less than 6 months.
Hilton Auckland Hilton Auckland wanted to better manage their a direct marketing membership club and how they communicated with them. We created the Porthole brand and website to help build and maintain the club. After which numerous email marketing campaigns were used to target the members.
Melview Developments A complete brand positioning and product concept book for The Quadrant Hotel Group was coupled in a package with a Melview Developments portfolio to promote a planned joint venture development.
Montana / Brancott Wines Possibly New Zealand’s most recognised wine brand needed a clean green website to promote its clean green New Zealand(ness).
The French Cafe We said we started five years ago with one client - that one client was multi-award winning French Cafe restaurant. Our job was to create their website. So it seemed fitting that just before we decided to put this book together they asked us to make them a brand new one. Its such a great example of what we always believed - ‘if we do great work, our clients will keep coming back’.
Sofitel Fiji / Queenstown Sofitel, Accor’s five star luxury brand, had two properties in Fiji and one in Queenstown that needed an online presence. Working with the wonderful Sonya from Accor was always a pleasure, especially on those rare occasions where we’re given more than a week to do anything. We were also extremely proud to work with Sonya to help the CureKids Fiji charity carry out its amazing work in the islands.
