As this subject involves the development of accounting skills of learners in Grade 8 and 9, one hour per week must be used for financial literacy in terms of the annual teaching plan. ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS Assessment is a continuous planned process of identifying, gathering and interpreting information about the performance of learners, using various forms of assessment. Assessment in Economic and Management Sciences focuses on the knowledge,

skills

and

values inherent decisions

in economic and

social

environments. Economic and Management Sciences cover valuable skills such as economic, entrepreneurship, financial and managerial skills that prepare learners for success in different economic and business environments. The facilitator/parent must consider all these skills when planning teaching, learning and assessment activities. Learners are assessed in two ways: 1) Informal assessment •

It takes place during the teaching and learning process.

It is usually the activities completed during lessons and discussions and observations.

The results of informal assessment are not recorded.

2) Formal assessment •

All assessment tasks that form part of the formal assessment programme for the year are regarded as formal assessment.

The assessment is formally revised by a moderator.

Examples of formal assessments include tests, examinations and projects.

Refer to the portfolio book for information about assessments.

STUDY TIPS AND METHODS Economic and Management Sciences mainly consists of three sections namely the economy, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. The learners must be able to clearly distinguish between the three sections. The learners have to complete a great amount of work during the course of the year. It is important that they use the right study method to prepare for tests and examinations. Here are some study tips that the learners may use: •

Quickly read each chapter before the work is explained.

Always listen attentively: 70% to 80% of learning and understanding takes place while the work is verbally explained.

Make sure the learners read and understand each term in the lesson. Use the glossary in the study guide or a dictionary.

Focus and concentrate on each step of the section that is being discussed. Do not let their minds wander.

Actively participate and be involved in the lesson by asking questions and giving answers.

Revise the work that is completed every day. Read the few pages carefully.

Try to identify different types of questions every day and make notes.

It is important that the learners understand all the work before proceeding to the next section.

Welcome to the subject Economic and Management Sciences.

Economic and Management Sciences consists of three components, namely the economy, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. The facilitator’s guide serves as support to the facilitator. The facilitator must use the answers in the facilitator’s guide to assess the learners’ activities and exercises.

As the facilitator who will be teaching the content to the learners, you must remember that the subject is new to both you as facilitator and the learners.

Each lesson should be thoroughly explained to the learners and discussions should be held regarding all activities. It is always good to go through the questions and answers with the learners and to give feedback to the learners about possible errors or good answers. The facilitator’s guide will guide you throughout the year and should be used in conjunction with the study guide.

HOW TO USE THE FACILITATOR’S GUIDE

1.

All the content in the study guide should be presented to the learners.

2.

As facilitator, you are responsible for ensuring that the learners acquire a 72-page exercise book for answering activities within the study guide.

3.

Revision activities, activities contained within a unit all forms part of the content and the learners must complete it. This will help the learners to better understand the content of the subject.

4.

The learners and the facilitator must take note of the financial literacy activities that need be completed in the learners' workbook. This is indicated at the top of the activity.

5.

Give the learners a deadline for when activities must be completed. Try to keep to the dates to ensure that all work is completed.

6.

After marking the work, the answers should be discussed with the learners.

7.

It is always good if the learners write down the correct answers for further reference for tests and examinations.

8.

If you provide the answers to the learners without giving them the opportunity to do it themselves, they will have good marks but will remember nothing of the content.

9.

All answers of all activities, revision activities are provided in the facilitator’s guide.

10. Each lesson is composed in such a way that the learners can work calmly through it. There is an activity at the end of each lesson. Each lesson has a time allocation as required by CAPS. 11. If you have any queries regarding this subject, please contact the subject matter expert at Impaq.
