It is very easy for Christians who are committed to being submissive to leaders to be lured into thinking that our leader’s lukewarmness toward the Bible is the example they should follow. If civil authorities decide to marginalize the Word of God, Christians have to give themselves a wakeup call. Even though my leaders in my culture want to marginalize God’s Word, I am responsible as a steward of God to uphold his Word.
he so-called New England Primer was first published between 1687 and 1690, and it was based on another book entitled The Protestant Tutor. It contained spiritual guidelines and teachings for children, all founded on biblical principles. It was said about this book: “It is the single most influential Christian textbook in history; most scholars agree that most, if not all, of the American Founding Fathers were taught to read and write using the New England Primer.” This first primer was widely used in the 18th and 19th centuries, but was gradually replaced by another series known as the McGuffey Readers several volumes about basic alphabet and reading skills for children. It was produced by a man named William Mcafee, born at the beginning of the 19th century and raised in the state of Ohio within a devoted Christian family. He had an excellent education and was hired to write four reading books for elementary students. These books were published in 1837, and his brother added two more volumes in the 1840s. Millions of American children learned to read with them. The original editions of the McGuffey Readers presented learning from a biblical foundation and used its lessons to reinforce biblical principles of morality and life, but after the death of William Mcafee in 1873, his readers un-
derwent a radical revision. America was changing into a pluralist society, a melting pot of religions and worldviews, and the six volumes of the readers, plus the primers and spelling books, were made totally secular. Then came modern 20th century education, under the influence of John Dewey, the father of progressive American education. Dewey was born in 1859 and died in 1952. He was a psychologist and a philosopher who was most responsible for how American children are educated today. The results are obvious.
