News and Notes MathCounts On Friday, January 24, eight middle school students attended the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Carderock, MD for a math competition and a tour of the research facility. The morning consisted of a series of individual and team competitions involving over 200 students from 26 middle schools in Maryland and Virginia.  The ICS 8th grade team consisted of Joanne Kim, Sheeba Prince, Tristan White, and Daniel Patel. Daniel was our highest scoring student which earned him the opportunity to compete on stage with the top scorers in a first-to-buzz-the-right-answer-gets-to-go-on-tothe-next-round format of the Countdown Round. With his ICS teammates supporting him in the audience, Daniel twice buzzed in with the correct answer, finishing with a tie for 11th place.  The ICS 7th grade team consisted of Olivia Rummel, Lauren Potter, Lindsey Smith, and Ty McIntyre. These students accomplished a first for ICS at this competition; they received a trophy for The Most Creative Team Name! The name they came up with was "May the Equations be Ever in Your Favor." For any Hunger Games fans out there, this was a play on words that the judges deemed worthy of recognition. After a morning of very challenging math problems, the students were taken on a tour of the naval facility. Among other things, they saw how math, science, engineering, and technology are used in the research, design, and testing of ships and submarines. Coaches Chris Pate and Nancy Ferrell were impressed with the students' performance, and are appreciative of the support ICS provides that allows our students to participate yearly in the NSWC math competition. Lost and Found on Display Next Week - February 10-14 Lost and found will be on display Monday-Friday, February 10-14 in the breezeway. Many lost and found articles, especially coats and jackets, have accumulated the past few months. Please stop by the display tables to check for items your student may have lost.  Items that have a name in them will be returned to their owner! Please remember to label ALL clothing, including uniform items, PE clothing and outer wear. Many students who change for PE and sports are leaving behind school uniforms. Please be sure to look for your lost items now.  All items not claimed by February 14 will be donated to Immanuel's Hope Ministry.

Job Opening for Office Manager Resumes are now being accepted for the position of Office Manager. The position will be available effective summer 2014. It is full time during the school year (mid-August to mid-June) and part time during the summer. Those interested in applying should contact Susan Huber for a job description. Helpful Hints for Entering Parent Service Hours To simplify entering Parent Service Hours, feel free to enter a total number of hours for the same task. For example if you regularly help during lunch, just enter the total number of hours in one line. You do not need to make a separate entry for each date. New Documents on Parents Web A new Family Directory and updated Zip Code List have been added to ParentsWeb/Resource Documents with all of our new families and any recent corrections. Click here to view. Note from Clinic We are seeing a large number of students at school with fevers, sore throats and upset stomachs. If your child is complaining about any of the above symptoms, please be sure to take their temperature before coming to school. Your child is not allowed to come to school if they have vomited or had diarrhea within the last 24 hours. They must also stay home if they have had a fever of 100 degrees (or higher) within the last 24 hours. They may return to school after being fever-free for 24 hours without being on fever-reducing medication (Tylenol or Motrin). Thank you in advance for doing your part in keeping our kids from spreading illness. Elementary Spring Choir Has Started Rehearsals began this past Monday, February 3, but it's still not too late to join! New members are welcome. The next rehearsal is Monday, February 10 at 1:30 p.m. Great music...lots of fun! Join us! Choir meets from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. on Monday afternoons. Register on ParentsWeb and view meeting dates. Want to Pre-Order your School Supplies for 2014-2015? School Kidz, a program through Staples, offers the opportunity for students to "pre-order" their school supplies for next year. Each order is customized to the supplies needed by the specific grade level. ICS is participating in this program and in March you will have the opportunity to order your supplies and have them delivered at the end of the school year in a handy box! This is an optional program we are offering to our families to make it more convenient to purchase their school supplies for the next school year. Order forms are expected to go home in early March with your child, so watch for your forms in a few weeks! The time period to order will between March 10 and March 20 (March 28 for online orders). Kits can be ordered by returning the order form to ICS (a check must accompany your order), or order online through a link that will be on our website. All orders completed by check will be due on Thursday, March 20 and online orders will be accepted until March 28. Orders will be delivered just before the last week of school. Watch for a display coming soon near the school office. Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week: March 10-14 At ICS, we celebrate this week at a different time than Hallmark and other schools, who usually do

it in late spring. The Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) is preparing to honor all of our teachers and staff at a special luncheon to be held in the Atrium on Tuesday, March 11. 

Gift Basket Raffle: At the luncheon, the PTF will again offer the ever-popular gift basket raffle, a favorite tradition which the teachers look forward to each year. Theme baskets are put together by the creative efforts and generous donations of ICS parents and classes. Our honorees are given (free) raffle tickets to "bid" on their theme basket of choice.

Donations: We are currently accepting donations of all kinds to go into the themed gift baskets. Donations may be large or small, creative or simple, but many are needed -- and all are appreciated. Parents (or classes) may provide items and gift cards to go into the gift baskets or they may use their own creativity and talents to put together a complete theme basket. Certificates for services and gift certificates from your work or personal business are also very much appreciated. (And remember that any scrip gift cards purchased directly from ICS also benefits the school.)

Sign Up to Help: Please take a look at the SignUpGenius we have set up and let us know how you might help. Deadline for item donations is Friday, February 28. Complete theme baskets may be dropped off during the week of March 3-7.

Please know that participation is completely optional and we appreciate any help you can provide with this effort. With your help, we can show our teachers our tremendous gratitude for their daily work in our children's lives and send them all home with something fun and memorable. Items and complete theme baskets may be left with the Receptionists marked "PTF Teacher/Staff Appreciation Basket Raffle". If you have any questions or want to assist with this effort, please contact Pam O'Meara by email or call at (703) 887-7220 cell/text.

PARENTS, please remember our TARDY policy Students are to be dropped off at school by 8:20 a.m. each morning to give them time to be ready for school to begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. If you drop your child off after 8:30 a.m., we need you to come into the building to sign them in as tardy. Students who arrive after 8:30 a.m. are missing important instructional and devotional time in their classroom. It is a distraction for the whole class when students enter the room after instruction has begun. Please make a special effort to have your students here by 8:20 a.m., so that they can start the school day on a positive note. Tardies are recorded by our teachers, and may be reflected on a student's report card. Thank you to all parents who make a concerted effort to have your students here on time. We all want to work together to encourage a smooth beginning to each school day. Meetings for Rising 9th Graders Orientation and curriculum nights are taking place in the public high schools. These are important meetings for upcoming freshmen and parents to attend. Please call your local high school to get the date for your high school's orientation for rising freshmen or the general curriculum orientation.

The weather is getting cooler and jackets and sweaters are being worn to school. Please label your items with your student's name. Many school clothing items are left behind after P.E. and sports activities. Items with a name in them will be returned to the student.
