Happy Birthday to Volunteer Bureau! We’d like to wish the Burghfield and Mortimer Volunteer Bureau a very happy 40th Anniversary! Yes, for 40 years the bureau has been providing transport for those who don’t have access to, or cannot use, public transport to take them to medical and related appointments. The service has been invaluable to those in Burghfield, Mortimer and the surrounding villages that access it. The office in the Burghfield Methodist Church is open every weekday from 9.30am to 11.30am when the phone line is open to take requests for transport to hospitals, doctors surgeries, dentists and opticians. People using the service are asked to make a realistic contribution and the bureau is also assisted by a grant from the West Berkshire Council.
It is a well-used and needed service, so much so that the bureau is urgently seeking new drivers. Volunteer drivers use their own cars and receive a mileage allowance to cover the cost of fuel, calculated by the mileage from and to their own home. If you can help please contact the office on 0118 9831814.

e were saddened to hear the news that the Arlott family, who have run the Old Mill in Aldermaston for 60 years, had £90,000 stolen from their business by Joanne Jordan, a trusted and longserving member of staff. With Ms. Jordan now jailed for two years, the family have vowed to rebuild the business and we’re sure the local community will rally to support them in doing just that. Steeped in traditional charm with its original oak beams, sluices and water wheel, The Old Mill is well-known locally as a picturesque wedding setting, but the venue is used for much more besides. Did you know that local groups hold their social gatherings at the Old Mill, including the Masons, Probus (Professional Retired Businessmen) and M.O.T.H.S (The Memorable Order of the Tin Hats) who dine in November for their armistice dinner, a well supported evening to remember the fallen of all wars? The MIll is also host to a number of Networkig meetings.
drinks on the lawn. The extensive grounds mean that the Old Mill is ideal for corporate team building days, too. Activities have included carriage driving, clay shoots and fishing, often followed by a BBQ in the sunshine. There is also excellent fishing available, with the permits directly available from The Old Mill for just £14 for the whole day. And half that for under 12s and seniors. With so much on offer, the Arlott family and the Old Mill stand every chance of recovering from this unfortunate incident with the local community behind them. So, next time your company or club needs to book an event, or if your family has a big get-together coming up, do think of the Old Mill and give them a call to see how they can help.
Across the summer, bookings at the venue include summer balls and proms, where guests have enjoyed jazz bands and

Two sisters from Burghfield have had their long hair chopped off to raise money for a wig charity. Charlotte and Olivia Crane, aged 15 and 10, have raised over £1300 for the Little Princess Trust, which makes high quality wigs from real hair for children who have lost theirs due to cancer treatment. Our friends over at Worthingtons The Salon agreed to cut and style the girls’ hair free of charge. The girls’ hair will be used by the charity to make two wigs for child cancer patients, which is a cause close to Charlotte’s heart. Her friend’s brother and sister both suffered from cancer and went through the treatments. Their dad Darrel Crane said: “I’m immensely proud of both my daughters. They both did this off their own backs and raised all the money themselves.” Well done, girls! Pictures courtesy of Get Reading

LIVING by Eye Geek.
s a self-confessed gadget-geek, I am fortunate to have a day job which sometimes takes me around the globe looking at the latest technologies available. Once a year, one of my travel stops includes Mobile World Congress where 93,000 people descend upon the beautiful Catalonian capital, Barcelona, to talk ‘mobile’ and uncover what’s new in our ever increasingly connected world.
Oral B’s Bluetooth Connected toothbrush available on Amazon from around £82
Since it’s humble beginnings back in Cannes in the 90s, and now the world’s largest mobile show, MWC sees over 2100 companies who spend a fortune exhibiting their latest innovations - all with a promise to make our future integration
with technology a simpler place to be. So readers, this month, I thought I’d share my pick of the ‘connected crop’ as discovered at this years’ show. Smart toothbrush With Oral-B’s Bluetooth electric toothbrush and its associated app, realtime feedback on ones brushing can be obtained. It works in such a way that if there is too much pressure put on the toothbrush, the app indicates to reduce the pressure. Depending on the users requirements or needs such as whitening teeth, bad breath reduction or fighting plaque, the app can give recommendations. Even your dentist can suggest recommendations through the app - like, for example, if there is a particular area like the back teeth of the user which get missed out and need care, the dentist can put a note to the user to focus more on them. Connected Suitcase For those who travel a lot, this gadget could be the best solution to help you not lose your suitcase, even if the airline does. Bluesmart Technologies have launched a Connected Luggage, a smart suitcase featuring a built in tracker which can tell you at all times its exact GPS location. Not just this, locking and unlocking the suitcase can be done with your smartphone too. Even if you forget to lock it, there is no need to worry as the suitcase will lock automatically once your smartphone moves away from it. And, if your smartphone gets dried up or freezes (as it could happen now and then), users also have the option to unlock and lock this nifty bit of kit using a good old fashioned set of keys. This connected suitcase also has a built-in digital scale to let you know your bag’s weight therefore helps you to avoid the overweight situation at the airlines. By just lifting the bag up, the connected app will show its weight on your smartphone.

Smart Projector For those who like something a little bit novel, the new ZTE SPro2 Smart Projector has 16GB of internal memory, so you don’t have to plug in your smartphone to play your media. It also has three hours of battery life, so you will likely be able to watch a whole movie with it. This is due to start shipping in the summer!
And finally, (as we have a new store opening around these parts fairly soon), I wonder if they will be stocking these... Ikea’s new range of furniture comes complete with inbuilt wireless charging spots, allowing users to recharge their gadgets by simply resting or putting them down on a bedside table, desk, or lamp base. Once placed on the pad, a notification pops up to alert the user the device is charging. The Jyssen wireless charger can also be attached to any flat surface to recharge enabled smartphones, bypassing the need for unsightly cables. Genius!
IKEAs wireless charging range is now available in all UK stores and online at www.ikea. co.uk, with products starting from £30.
My next step is powder and I have to say I think the cheaper powders tend to perform as good and if not better than my high end expensive ones. My current beauty must have at the moment is Bourjous’ Healthy Balance Powder. It matifies my skin without it looking flat and lasts an extremely long time on my face before any touch ups are needed. Also the yellow tone of this powder is great to use under the eyes to help neutralise any dark circles. For bronzer Clarins kindly sent me their new Acquatic Treasure Summer Bronzing Compact* which is going to be launched in stores this month. I have to say I am absolutely blown away by this bronzer; it knocks my Clinque chubby sticks out of the park! Not to mention the packaging is beautiful, the pigmentation of the bronzer is amazing and the four sections of different shades makes it perfect for contouring too, this definitely takes pride of place in my makeup bag. The blusher that I currently can’t live without is from Rimmel in the shade Live Pink. It looks fairly scary at first in the packaging but once on the face it gives a gorgeous soft flushed look, perfect for those summer days.
Summer is just a few months away (finally!) and when the weather starts to heat up I always make sure that my makeup is going to stay in place without causing my face to turn into a disco ball of shine! (not a good look)
Probably the most important step, and in most cases forgotten is primer. Primers can be seen as unnecessary but they can smooth wrinkles and pores and help control shine. My favourite is The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Pore Minimiser, which is very light, smells zingy and fresh and helps prevent any shine that could appear on my face. Another bonus is it literally lasts forever, I bought mine back in August and because you need such a tiny pea sized amount you don’t need to worry about buying a new one anytime soon! Next is for the base, foundation. My holy grail is the Nars Sheer Glow foundation, which is expensive, yes, but I’ve never managed to find a cheaper one that performs as well as this does. It leaves my skin looking fresh, dewy and has absolutely amazing coverage without looking cakey or over the top. An alternative is L’oreal Paris’ Infallible Matte Foundation for just £7.99. This is perfect for those that have an oily skin type or for those hot summer days when you need good coverage but without the added shine. This lasts for hours and really does matify the skin perfectly without the worry of your makeup budging.
Lastly for lips, Clarins’ Instant Light Natural Lip Balm Perfector* in the shade 06 Rosewood is a keen favourite for me. A very wearable ‘my lips but better’ shade, it can be worn day or night. This is the only lip product I own that perfectly gives a soft touch of colour to my lips as well as keeping my lips hydrated all day long, I love it!
For concealers I tend to go for something quite light if my base is heavy, a perfect example is Maybelline’s Eraser Eye Concealer. This gives your skin a radiant glow and does a good great job of covering any imperfections! However, if you’re having a bad skin day (we all get them) a more heavy-duty concealer is Collection’s Lasting Perfection Concealer, which can cover any spot, no matter how big!
If there is anything you would like to see me review or any ideas for which beauty topics I should cover next, then feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org xx

For the eyes I am currently loving Maybelline’s Lash Sensational mascara. It has done a better job at lengthening and volumising my lashes than any highend mascara, and for such a small price (£7.99) I think it is definitely a must buy! For eye shadow in the summer months, I am always on the look out for an affordable option that won’t crease or budge no matter how hot it is. So far my favourite contender is Maybelline’s Colour Tattoos because they have such a creamy formula and the colour pigmentation is beautiful on the eyelids, which blend out so nicely when applied with fingers. They are easy on my bank too, even more of reason to love them!

on FOX FEST!
SATURDAY 6th JUNE MIDDAY UNTIL 11:30PM
If you are starting to fill your social diary for the summer months - we have a humdinger of an event for you to add. On Saturday June 6th, the Fox & Hounds, Theale are holding their fourth Fox Fest Music Festival! Since its inception back in 2012, the popularity of Fox Fest has soared. The area’s only one day music festival is a full scale festival with previous tribute lineups including Paul Weller, Arctic Monkeys, Led Zepplin and Kings of Leon. This year Foxy people, Daryl, Katie and their happy team, have pulled out all of the stops to bring you a host of nationally and internationally acclaimed talent to include headliners The Rolling Clones and Bon Jovie! The Fox & Hounds are very well known for their regular entertainment and tribute nights throughout the year, but Fox Fest surpasses them all. Catering to a real mix of people of all ages and varying music tastes, the music and fun begins at midday. “We’ll be serving a wide selection of Street Food throughout the event which can be washed down with a pint of real ale as we are also combining the event with our annual beer festival!” Tickets for the event are on sale now either by scanning the link here or by calling the ticket hotline on 0118 930 2295 Rollin’ Clones
The Rollin’ Clones have been entertaining crowds across the World for over 17 years, distilling the show down to a pure hit of Rock ‘n’ Roll, with a chaser of sequinned Glam. From the early days of the Rhythm and Blues, through to the excesses of the 70s, The Rollin’ Clones Rock ‘n’ Roll show is a faithful interpretation of the biggest band ever’s greatest hits, delivered with a smirk and a wink, recalling the mischief making of Mr Jagger himself, remaining true to the spirit of the originals. They are, without question, THE Rolling Stones tribute band. And, what is more... The lead singer from the Rolling Clones is also the lead singer of the pop duo Electro Velvet who will be representing the UK at Eurovision this year, that’s two weeks before Fox Fest!!!!! Bon Jovie tribute band members have a wealth of experience as performers, having shared a stage with well known chart topping bands, toured throughout the UK, in Europe, and as far as the middle east. The band’s tongue in cheek show is delivered with a truckload of humour. FOX Fest - you are in for a real treat! Bon Jovie was created in 2005,
although some of its members have performed with one Bon Jovi tribute or another since 1999.

RISE OF THE SECRET
You know the old phrase “if you want something doing - give it to a busy person”? We ask what happens if that busy person is simply overloaded and can’t do that ‘thing’. What then? Bring on the time fairies!
ecently, we read an article online which talked about a ‘Time Fairy’, a Personal Concierge who specialises in giving busy people back one of life’s most precious luxuries - time.
Apparently, the Personal Concierge Services industry is growing at an incredible rate. According to latest figures from TEN Group, who are considered to be one of the country’s largest Personal Concierge providers, the UK market is now worth more than £30 million annually.
Personal concierges used to be limited mainly to the wealthy, but our increasingly time-poor lives have changed that. Once considered a luxury for the uber rich and famous, personal concierge services, it appears, are now mainstream. Think of them as a modern day virtual Mrs Hughes from Downton Abbey and you wouldn’t be too far from the truth [but you don’t need to own a stately home to have one!]. According to West Berkshire Council’s District Profile, over 16% of working residents put in more than 49 hours a week, compared with 13.2% in the rest of England and Wales. So we hard working Berkshire-ites could do with a little help. When we read the article in the office, it got us thinking... As busy working parents ourselves here in our Mortimerbased offices, we are often pinched for time when it comes to the important things in life - families, down time, holidays, housework, shopping, parties and so on. We all agreed, a Mrs Hughes would be most welcome in our homes. So we Googled and found our very own Time Fairy. Meet Fiona. Based in Ufton Nervet, Fiona, put simply, is in the business of making life easier for others. Running Berkshire Lifestyle Management - a personal concierge service, she performs all manner of tasks for her busy clients and describes herself as
‘almost like a personal assistant, but on an as-needed basis.’ Whether she’s decorating a house for Christmas, hiring a landscaper or taking your car to the garage - what she’s really doing, she says, is giving her clients back their time. Since leaving her role in the corporate world where her hours were long and home time not easily achieved during daylight hours, she says she went into this in order help other professionals. “We spend so much time feeling stressed and guilty about how busy we are, but by outsourcing some of those tasks we can spend our time doing things we really want to do.”
“I basically do home management, … whatever’s on your todo list,” says Fiona. “I have worked for many years as a Senior Manager in the food industry, but with children in tow, and a travelling husband, it’s been stressful. Finding time to do the day to day things like arranging birthday parties and picking up dry cleaning could sometimes prove to be an impossible task!”
To contribute, advertise or let us know your news please call 0118 907 6200 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Many of Fiona’s clients work long hours and find it difficult to squeeze errands into their time off. Who wants to spend every lunch hour, evening and weekend doing relentless chores? That’s the case for Helen Hillman, Director for a national retailer with two small children and a husband who is equally busy as Director of Operations for an IT Management company. Hillman says that she typically employs Fiona for a day every other month, although lately she’s been using her services monthly. She might have Fiona run errands or organise areas of her Bradfield home, or perhaps take on special projects such as helping with holiday booking or wrapping and shipping gifts. “Those are just things that it’s difficult to find time to do, especially with little ones,” Hillman said. By hiring Fiona to handle time-consuming chores, she said, she and her husband get their weekends back and have more time to spend with their children. Many of Fiona’s clients are working parents, but she also has clients who travel frequently, time-strapped empty nesters and senior citizens whose family aren’t close by. “What busy person doesn’t wish they had a Fiona?” Says Hillman. Besides running errands, Fiona can often be found serving as a household manager, hiring contractors such as gardeners and house cleaners from among a list of service providers she trusts. She’ll organise travel and holidays, including the care of your pets and garden, and ensure there’s a fully stocked fridge on your return. Another service she offers is
Burghfield Dental Care
event assistance, which can involve helping to plan parties, shopping for food and supplies and taking care of the setup, serving and cleanup. These secret Getting back the Time Fairies time that matters are asked to perform a whole manner of duties even assist with family gatherings at weekends, so “you can enjoy the day,” she said. She also helps clients with organising their homes, sometimes working alongside the client and sometimes doing the work herself. Either way, she said she tries to set up systems her clients can follow so they’ll stay organised. So is it value for money? Typically, a personal concierge charges an hourly rate for their services which can vary between £30 and £40 per hour depending on the tasks required and the number of hours committed to. To timestrapped clients though, that’s the cost of free time. It’s about how much happiness it can add to their lives and about how much stress it can reduce. Where do I sign?! If you struggle to find the time to pump weights or attend Zumba classes, then substitute them with everyday household tasks or jobs in the garden. The calories burned while you’re doing household chores can really add up. You can burn anywhere from 80 to 500 calories through your normal house and garden maintenance. Take a look at the diagram to see how some of your household chores stack up in terms of calories burned. So it seems that housework is a great way to burn calories, but as is the case with any workout, the more effort you put in, the greater the benefit. In particular, polishing, dusting, mopping and sweeping are great for keeping arms shapely. Bending and stretching, for example, when you make the bed, wash windows or do the laundry are good for toning thighs and improving flexibility. And constantly running up and down the stairs as you tidy is a good aerobic workout.
Meanwhile, more energetic household chores such as decorating and spring cleaning, burn even more calories. Don’t forget the garden either – weeding, digging, mowing the lawn, trimming hedges or bushes and sweeping up are all great muscle toners and calorie burners. It is important to maintain good form in all exercises in order to avoid injury, though. You should also be creative with your household tasks, creating new exercises and motions as your body develops. Here are some to try! Pick up items on the floor or tables by squatting. Squeeze in your stomach and oblique muscles as you sweep. Dance while cooking dinner. Increase the pace of any household activity. Combining a work out and a household clean will add a little bit of interest to the usual cleaning or gardening routine as we stretch and lift and hold! It won’t be long until our homes are clean and our bodies are lean! And 5,6,7,8!

Paul Spratley THE
(of Spratley’s of Mortimer) guide to buying a used car
Pre-l oved Way Buying a vehicle the
at Spratley’s this summer
ow Time Flies! Spratley’s, a Fifth Generation Family Company.
It is true what they say. Time really does fly (especially as you get older)! It’s hard to believe that it’s five years since the last general election. It barely seems five minutes since the country’s leaders were last trying to woo “us voters” with their slick-tongued rhetoric. And now they’re all at it again!
It may also be hard to believe, for any owners of slightly road-embattled, 100,000+ mile 05 plate cars, that their weary chariots are celebrating their tenth birthday this year. It seems only five minutes since 05 number plated cars were the shiny, new “kids” on the block...
Unfortunately, Spratley’s cannot assist with either the
passing of time or indeed any “general election media fatigue” that you may be feeling, however if you are tired of looking down at the same old dated and dusty dashboard (if applicable!), then they would be delighted to help improve your interior cabin view and your all round motoring experience to boot!
servicing and MOTing most makes. They have a good stock of vehicles at their Mortimer site (as advertised on www.spratleys.co.uk) and also buy most makes to order too, from their longstanding trusted commercial suppliers. Many of the vehicles that Spratley’s retail are low-
mileage, 3 year old vehicles with the look and feel of brand new cars, but at a fraction of the cost! In recent months they have supplied to order Volkswagens, Fords, Minis in addition to Vauxhalls to some very satisfied customers!
Mindful that new cars can depreciate by up to 40% in their first year, Spratley’s concentrate on the supply of a wide range of pre-loved cars to suit most budgets. The cars Spratley’s supply are definitely “pre-loved” and not just “used” because they only supply cars that have been cared for properly and where the previous ownership, mileage and service history is proven. Spratley’s are well known in the locality for the service and supply of Vauxhalls, however for many years they have been supplying,
Paul & Julie Spratley with some of their team at their Mortimer Showroom
Indeed, the service provided by Spratley’s was summed up beautifully in a survey response received by the garage just a few weeks ago. “I do not believe that my experience of purchasing my car from Spratley’s could have been improved upon. It was simply excellent. Paul and Wendy were great!” Spratley’s also retail slightly older part exchange vehicles which are in very good condition many of which have a full Spratley’s service history. Paul Spratley said “We regularly take in older, part exchange, low mileage cars which are in excellent condition; these tend to sell very quickly as there is always a high demand in this area of the market.” He added “Sometimes overseeing the Sales Department at Spratley’s feels like running a car rehoming centre where we need to make sure that we match the right car with the right owner. Buying a car is such a big consideration and we have to be confident that the cars we supply fully meet our customers’ practical and aesthetic needs. Car buying considerations often include: Road tax/Insurance? This can sometimes be overlooked when considering buying a pre-loved vehicle. But ask yourself: How much am I able/prepared to pay each year? Petrol versus diesel? Diesels do not suit everyone and customers who do low annual mileage are often advised to steer away from them due to the potential problems of Diesel Particulate Filter blockage in modern diesels.
so important albeit all Spratley’s cars are supplied in tip top condition (having undergone rigorous workshop checks) and come with a minimum of six months’ warranty. Spratley’s professionally trained, skilled and experienced most makes’ service and repair team will look after your car’s every need thereafter and their fleet of courtesy cars will ensure that they can keep you mobile even whilst your car is in their care. If you would like to find out more about this fifth generation (where did those 107+ years go? ) family company, why not pop down and meet them for coffee and cake at one of their open days on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th

The cost of replacing the tyres? Big wheels usually means more expensive tyres! Will the pushchair/wheelchair/golf clubs/dog fit in the boot? Will the car fit in the garage?” “We believe our customers deserve the very best treatment from start to finish and there is never any pressure to buy from Spratley’s. Our customers appreciate this approach as documented in their survey returns… “It was good not to be pressured, rushed. Our needs were given priority.” Customer survey: November 2014 “Both Wendy and Paul were extremely friendly and helpful when we exchanged our car, the reason we always come back to you. Thank you for your excellent service.” December 2014” Selling the right car to the right customer is only the start of the relationship. The support and back up that customers receive post-sale is

Now let’s keep it that way!
ast month we brought you a guide to job seeking. So now that you’ve got your CV in shape and impressed at the interview stage, we wanted to share some insights into things that ‘new people’ do which irritates the incumbent staff...worth knowing! So don’t just Get That Job, make sure you Keep That Job! It’s hard to get it right, isn’t it? You’re entering a new zone. A zone in which you know no-one and they don’t know you. You circle each other carefully, trying to size each other up, while all the time you’re trying to impress, put your best foot forward and show you’re keen. But at the same time, you’re keen to make friends with the uninspired, unmotivated ‘lifer’ who sits next to you as well as the go-getter gunning for promotion who sits opposite. It really is a minefield and not for the faint-hearted! We’ve uncovered a list of do’s and don’ts from fellow employees to guide you through the first few weeks as you settle into your new job Don’t dress too casually The office might be more casual than you’re used to, but dressing down too early gives out the wrong message. The incumbents like to see that you want to impress, so don’t rock up in your faded jeans and band T-shirt. Do finish a little later than colleagues It’s a difficult call to get right, but knocking off earlier than the rest of your team in those all-important first weeks is definitely a no-no. Try to finish a little later than

them or, at the very least, leave at the same time. It will show that you’re willing to work as a team and not make a dash for the door as soon as the clock hits 5. Don’t surf the web and social media Facebook and Twitter are calling, but you have just started a new job. Your new boss will be twitchy, hoping they’ve made the right decision by employing you, so don’t rock the boat. Don’t make friends with new colleagues on social media Of course you’ll be keen to make friends at work, but stalking them out on social media and sending friend requests looks needy. Just give it a bit of time and see who you really bond with. Don’t send a joke to the whole office It might make you LOL, but sending an ‘all staff’ email when you’ve just joined a company is just embarrassing. Who are you to interrupt the entire workforce with your viral email? Even if you’ve been in a company years and are known as the joker, this behaviour can still grate, but as the new kid on the block...ewwww, cringe! So there’s really nothing to be nervous about on your first day now that you’re well-armed against the common mistakes newbies make. Just relax and enjoy! If you’ve got an embarrassing story about your first day in a new job, we’d love to hear them. Email your story to info@ villageeye.co.uk and you might just get into print!

Investments and the election
with Mark Penston
suspect that by the time anyone reads this article, the election will be imminent or (to the relief of most of us - over.)
Currently investment managers and economists are speculating on the effect that the election might have on the economy and investment markets. The variation of opinions will of course mean that someone will be right! Common opinion seems to be that this election is unlike recent ones. Star fund manager Neil Woodford feels that this election is unlike any he has seen for nearly 30 years. Although history shows that most past elections have had minimal lasting impact on the investment markets, Neil says that this time it feels different.

Opinions are that a majority is unlikely and with rising support for smaller parties any number of coalitions is possible or indeed a hung parliament. 2015 may even see another election.

Need a Solicitor? In the short term the lack of a majority may make markets unsettled until the consequences of whatever political blend results are established. In many ways investment markets prefer a weak government (once established) as it is less likely to diverge from the current status quo. In general, markets like where we are at the moment. It’s probably fair to say that the measure of ‘the markets’ is primarily the FTSE which is largely comprised of big, multinational institutions whose performance is unlikely to be knocked significantly by the result of an election. In fact the current buoyancy of the markets could be attributed to the various quantitive easing programs that are still rumbling on and pumping money in to economies. The question is, is how much are these quantitive easing programs disguising underlying issues and performance? The future of the markets would seem to be more about the unwinding of debt positions, and the future of Europe and other world economies than the outcome of the election. So volatility is likely and fund managers are already adjusting holdings to keep their portfolios perhaps a little less UK biased in the short term. From an investment perspective, diversification is key. This is a principle we adhere to as it provides more predictable returns which has been to the benefit of our clients’ investment portfolios.

he government is pressing ahead with its Social Action, Responsibility & Heroism Bill (SARAH) much to the chagrin of many parliamentarians and Claimant lawyers alike. In theory, it has been introduced to stop so-called heroes from facing negligence claims if they try to intervene in an emergency situation and they
demonstrated a generally responsible approach towards protecting the safety and/or interests of others; and Whether the alleged negligence occurred when the Defendant was acting heroically by stepping in, in an emergency situation to assist someone in danger and without regard to his own safety. Labour’s shadow courts Minister, Andrew Slaughter, asserts that the Bill is “frankly pathetic…access to justice is under threat and…the committee stage of the Bill has

The current law says that if a person injures another during the course of an activity, the injured party can claim damages in negligence through the civil courts. SARAH will not theoretically change the overreaching legal framework, but will direct the courts to consider the following factors when deciding whether a defendant has taken reasonable care:

injure someone in the process. Sceptics maintain that this is just another device created by parliament to cut out the socalled “compensation culture”. But the Bill is much maligned by parliamentarians too, who say it adds nothing more than the Compensation Act 2006, and critics suggest it renders innocent victims particularly vulnerable.

shown how little support there is for these measures which Chris Grayling (SARAH’s sponsor) himself admits will not change the law in any way”. Conservative justice Minister Shailesh Vara insists, however, that the Bill does introduce a change – requiring the court to consider whether someone “took a generally responsible approach to safety”. It is a much maligned piece of legislation. Whether it proves to have any impact whatsoever – time will tell.

WIN a Zorbing Birthday Party! Courtesy of
How excited are we?
Answer: very excited! The team at Unique Outdoors seem to have a never-ending capacity for fun and they’ve just proven this again with their most recent addition, a Zorb Racing Track! And courtesy of our lovely friends there, we’ve got a birthday party for up to 10 to give away! If you have a child between the age of 8 - 16 then this competition is just for you!
balls waiting for you and your friends, the activity is suitable for all ages from 4 to adult (good health permitting - it’s quite a work out!). If you fancy winning a birthday party for up to 10 young people, enter our exciting competition now!
Based within the grounds of Wokefield Park, Unique Outdoors is well-known for its adventurous outdoor activities for children of all ages. Proving a popular choice for birthday parties, activities include Woodland Laser Combat, Abseiling, Powerfan, High Ropes, Segways, Trapeze, Survival Skills, Archery and Mud Buggies! When the team there added Zorbing to the mix last year the fun-factor increased! Err...what exactly is Zorbing? A Zorb is a large, plastic ball that you can stand in, run in, roll in and jump in. It was originally invented by two friends from New Zealand in 1994. Their idea was to create a safe inflatable ball that people could get inside and roll around on the water. The activity took off like you wouldn’t believe and Zorbing was born. The Zorb ball soon found its way on land, as people discovered it was as much fun to roll down hills or play “bumper Zorb” with their friends. The combination of safe fun and the adrenaline-filled time you can have with a few Zorb balls has made them a sure-fire hit. With Unique Outdoors’ twenty metre Zorb Racing Track and four Zorb

Joining the coeducational
Pioneers! A pioneer is somebody who breaks new ground, and that is what it will be for a boy joining Luckley House School in Wokingham, as it moves to coeducation from September 2015.
uckley House School is an excellent school, with exceptional academic standards. At GCSE, the average ‘value added’ is one grade, which means that pupils achieve an average of a grade higher in each of their subjects than pupils of similar ability in other schools. Luckley pupils perform outstandingly in the public exams, enabling most to secure places at excellent universities, or take up highly valued apprenticeships. Alongside excellent teaching, is outstanding pastoral care - everyone is valued for who they are, regardless of their talents and abilities.
believe that this move will meet local families’ needs in the years ahead, whilst preserving the much valued ethos and heritage of the School.” As part of its ‘pioneer initiative’ the school is offering a range of special awards for pupils celebrating the launch of coeducation. In addition, means-tested bursaries, academic, art, music, sport and drama scholarships are available, as well as very favourable sibling discounts. With a fleet of minibuses providing daily transport across Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey, day pupils at Luckley join the school from a wide catchment area. A new bus route is being introduced in September, servicing the Spencers Wood, Mortimer and Burghfield areas. And, the flexible boarding options, make the school very appealing to the modern family. So, if you are looking for an excellent all-round private school for your son or daughter, look no further - join the ‘Pioneer Party’!
Coeducational Day and Boarding School for Pupils Aged 11-18
Jane Tudor, Head of Luckley recognises that it will take some courage for the first intake of boys to join what is currently an all girls’ school, but is confident that the benefits will outweigh the drawbacks. She says “We firmly believe that what boys will experience when they join Luckley, will be better and more fulfilling than they could ever expect! Each boy will gain from the academic excellence, will be encouraged to reach beyond his potential, and will grow into a confident and accomplished young man”. The school announced its decision to move to coeducation at the start of this academic year. Mrs. Tudor explains the rationale behind the decision: “The uniqueness of our school lies in the combination of ethos and size. Our focus on the individual brings an education that affirms talent and develops potential. Remaining small in a competitive market is challenging and prompts us to assess our position regularly. We have listened to current and prospective parents and Heads of feeder schools, so that we understand what is good and valued about our school and can build on this knowledge. Our research has shown that there is a need in Berkshire for a small coeducational school, offering excellent academic teaching across the curriculum, and with outstanding provision in the creative and performing arts and sport. An extensive and varied co-curricular programme completes the profile of a truly all-round education for both boys and girls. We firmly

Young Insurance wisdom
or this months article I am going to stray from the normal car reviews to give some hints and tips for finding the best insurance quotes, something that greatly affects young drivers like me. I will look through my recent experience of finding my own insurance to offer up some pearls of wisdom that will hopefully benefit not just young drivers, but anyone who insures a car.

The first thing to understand is there is a million variables affecting the weight of your premium, mostly based on statistics. The best thing I have found is to set aside a good amount of time to sit down and play with different aspects of your quotes to find what works best for you. Minor changes to your job description or the amount the car is worth can have a huge effect on the final quote. Personally I have run around 250 quotes before finding a great car that I never thought I would be able to insure at 19.
it on the drive or in your garage you will reduce the risk of it getting damaged. While it’s great to start on comparison sites such as confused.com as I did, some companies may offer the best deals by going direct, or companies like Admiral offer discounts if you insure more than one car with them.

A high excess reduces the premium, but just make sure you would be able to afford it if you have an accident. Make sure the value of the car and your annual mileage are correct, the higher they are the more you’ll pay.

ANDY ROBBINS // THE GENERATERS // BRIGHT SHADOWS DARREN JAMES HODGE // THEIR TURN TO LOSE
Film of the MONTH
by Rob Barnes
The Water Diviner: Russell Crowe makes his directorial debut in this touching historical drama set in the aftermath of the battle of Gallipoli, about a bereaved father on a quest to recover his lost sons’ remains. Crowe plays Joshua Connor, a farmer and water diviner who sends his three boys off to war only for them all to vanish on the battlefield on the same day, presumed dead. His grief stricken wife is driven to suicide, and based on a graveside promise he vows to find his sons and return them home to their mother’s side. On arrival in Constantinople Joshua finds refuge and hospitality at the hands of Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko) a hotelier and widow herself, sparking an all too predictable romance. Whilst wooing her mother Joshua becomes a father figure to her doe-eyed child Orhan, who arranges for a fisherman to ferry him to the shores of Gallipoli.
Just as striking are the gruesome and haunting battle scenes: the moans of despair as the youngest son realises his impending death will linger long in the memory.
Such are the financial pressures on guaranteeing a box office return, Crowe had little choice but to star as well as direct. However this is no vanity project, and rather than playing to type as might be expected, he instead delivers one of the most understated and soulful roles of his career. Yes, he is a man’s man with a strong moral compass, but he is no chest-pumping hero and has a vulnerability that helps us truly believe in a story that may otherwise seem far-fetched. Crowe has certainly drawn on all his experience working with many of the world’s leading directors to deliver some truly unforgettable moments.
However despite Crowe’s performance, the biggest and most enlightening takeaway is the mostly unknown chapter of history it is based on. Adapted from the book of the same name, the story is told from the perspective of both sides who, under extraordinary circumstances, were forced to work together to help recover the dead. Jai Courtney and Yilmaz Erdogan, who play Lieutenant colonel Hughes and Major Hasan give assured performances and help convey the unlikely bond between two nations united by a devastating war. Whilst Joshua’s burgeoning friendship with Hasan, who becomes his key ally, is a little unconvincing Crowe’s genuine interest in the common humanity of his protagonists is admirable. There is no doubt that amongst these highlights there are also many flaws: the unsympathetic and stereotypical depiction of the British soldiers is almost pantomime; the love story is entirely unnecessary, and many parts of the story feel rushed. Nevertheless, these can all be forgiven thanks to the care and sensibility with which it is handled. Crowe has pulled off a ripping yarn that is both handsome and stirring in equal measure and definitely worth a watch.
There are echoes of Gladiator in the cinematography, in particular the epic sequence of Joshua riding into a ferocious sandstorm.

"Worth a watch" 3/5
by R.J. Palacio
I was introduced to ‘Wonder’ by my Year 6 teacher as one of our required reads. The book is powerful and emotional, it made me mad and sad, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. ‘Wonder’ is about a young boy, August Pullman, born with a deformed face. After being home schooled, he enters school for the first time in Fifth grade! He has to cope with people that have never seen a face like his, he has many struggles and is bullied by a boy named Julian who makes August’s life a complete hardship. The story is also told by several character viewpoints, which makes this book a real page turner. This book can teach many lessons - to always choose kindness - never judge by the way someone looks. The story would make a great film, I hope this happens soon. I recommend this book for age 10 & over, it ends well as good luck would have it!

Need A Marquee? Did you know that the 1st Burghfield & Sulhamstead Scouts offer a Marquee Hire service covering West Berkshire? With a range of marquees of various sizes their marquees are available for your event throughout the year. This hire service helps to provide much needed funds to maintain their facilities and equipment for all members of their Scout Group - which now includes young people from over 250 families across the Village Eye region. There are many sizes available, from 20’ x 20’ to 50’ x 20’ for the marquee and up to 13’ x 32’ for the Party tents. All you need a few extra feet around the perimeter for guy ropes and around 15ft height clearance in the centre. The marquees must be pitched on grass and therefore it’s not viable to erect one on a patio.
The approximate costings for local hires are from £80 to £360 which includes a weekend hire (as opposed to a day) and erection by the scout leaders themselves. It may be possible to arrange a discount if you are able to provide some ‘labour’ and it is also possible to hire a the a marquee, together with instructions, on a DIY basis! If you’d like to find out more, the first step is to contact John Hewitt to see if your required date is free. You can either call him 07860 262048 or e-mail email@example.com

IRON DUKE Stratfield Saye
“Outstanding food and service at this quaint gastro-pub,the staff went out of their way to please. Highly recommend a visit.”
Presents Summer If we haven’t yet had the pleasure of your company at the Iron Duke, we look forward to welcoming you soon - and if you have already been, perhaps you are one of the may people leaving such flattering reviews about us. For this, we sincerely thank you. In the cooler months, our guests are invited to relax in front of our log burner to enjoy the wine and winter ambiance only a traditional English pub (with all the trimmings) can provide. We do love the winter - but once the warmth of the summer sun shines on us at the Iron Duke, we love nothing more than having the perfect excuse to throw open the doors to our outdoor space and offer our guests a true taste of ‘Britishness’ all served with a sense of fun and a well mannered smile. Our well established and enclosed garden is a civilized setting for a summer lunch or balmy evening meal. Safe for children with plenty of space, it is split between table and bar service. In good weather we’ll sometimes offer an outdoor summer grill kitchen serving seasonal dishes. We’ve worked really hard to achieve a justified reputation for good real food. Based on simple preparations of excellent ingredients, our menu is built around modern renderings of old British Isles dishes to include: Seabass served with rushed New Potatoes and Spring Onion, Chicken Caesar Salad dusted with homemade Crusty Croutons and not forgetting our signature homemade beefburger. Yum. Naturally, it’s got to be the food that’s most important (after all, it’s our first love), but also the quirkiness on offer. With enough outdoor covers to seat 40 diners, a permanent fixture, and certainly an amusing talking point in our garden, is our ice cream van. Serving Walls ice creams, and lollies too - our van is also known to serve a cheeky pint and a glass of crisp white sauvignon on warmer days... (now that’s novel!) Our premises & garden space (along with a selection of marquees) is available for exclusive hire too perfect for your soirée, function or event. Much love.

Whatever your age or ability, there is something for you. Whether you are looking for something to keep you fit, to meet new people, to keep the kids active or for a shot of adrenaline, you’ll find a huge selection of sports and activities to try. All equipment and training will be provided and most are FREE or at a reduced price. What do I need to do? To take part, Passports cost £1 each and are available from:
