n today’s world of Information Technology, you would have thought there should be a device on the market that helps protect vulnerable people from nuisance phone calls especially predators trying to trick innocent people into parting with their money.
Well there is and Loddon Valley Lions have been testing such a device called the BT8500 Advanced Call Blocker which is a Digital Cordless phone with an answering machine. The Call Blocker is available in some shops on the high street. However, the Lions were so concerned with the increase of incidents of online theft reported by the media, that they decided to do something about it. A small fund has been allocated by the Lions to purchase the handsets on a trial basis to help those people in need to buy a low cost blocking handset which the Lions have installed in the homes of the people who have contacted them. The Call Blocker once installed has helped put those people back in control of all incoming calls. The installation and operation is quite simple. To receive calls from people you want to talk to, you just enter their names and telephone numbers into the ‘phone menu. These can be home, mobile or business numbers. Any callers from phone numbers not in the menu will need to state their name and press the # key symbol for your phone to ring. You then have the option of either accepting the call, always accepting the call, blocking the call or sending the call to the answer ‘phone. The BT8500 Advanced Call Blocker puts you back in control because it blocks up to 1000 numbers, has a colour screen, automatically copies contacts between handsets, records up to 60 minutes of messages, has a hands-free speaker and operates from a single phone socket. Additional handsets can be purchased up to a maximum of 3. A new report published by Which states 40% of all calls received by the elderly members of the community are classified as nuisance calls.
So if you are somebody that suffers from nuisance calls and lives in the Loddon Valley area, or you know somebody that does, then this could be the solution to the problem.

Loddon Valley Lions Club is one of about 70 Lions Clubs in Central Southern England serving the area which is centred on Tadley and bounded by Sherborne St John, Sherfield-onLoddon, Mortimer, Aldermaston Wharf, Brimpton and Kingsclere, to the north of Basingstoke. Each year Loddon Valley Lions raise around £20,000 to create new initiatives that help benefit the community locally, especially those less fortunate than ourselves. Over 40 years since the club was formed it has raised over £600,000 which has then been allocated to good causes in the community supporting the very young to the more mature in years. The call blocking project is one such initiative that shows the Lions do care for the community and want to help them. The Lions Tadley Treacle Fair is one of the most important events in the Loddon Valley Lions calendar. Over £11,500 was raised on the 5th June this year from this event to help the Lions to continue carrying out their good work. Future events include a Golf Competition in September, a Fireworks Extravaganza in November and the daily evening Father Christmas Sleigh tour of the Loddon Valley area in December. More information is available on the website www.loddonvalleylions.org The Lions are always grateful to those people who want to help at the events they organise and to new members wishing to join the Club. They are also receptive to new ideas such as the call blocking initiative which was brought to their attention by a new member of a newly formed group called ‘’Friends of the Lions’’ who help at the events and meet monthly to create new ways of supporting the local community.
