Spratley’s, The Family Garage. Proudly supporting this Mad community for over 100 years! Hatters

Do you approach the school holidays with trepidation? Our cover sponsor this month could hold the answer. Yes, The Willink Sports Centre tell us all about their great value summer holiday club, Camp Adventure, on pages 10 and 11. With different activities every day, the kids just don’t get a chance to get bored and spend theirBentime having fun and making new friends.

But we still have a few weeks before the kids break up and Saturday 4th July sees Spratley’s of Mortimer, a fifth generation family company the return of the Mortimer Fun Day. You can find the full programme of events on pages 20 and 21. New this year is a Burger Bake-Off! If you think you make a mean burger, turn to p.18 where Calor invite you to take part in their cook-off! We also see the return of the much-loved Mortimer Beach at the Fun Day, courtesy of Spratley’s. And just in case it escaped your attention, take your programme to the Spratley’s stand where you will be entered into their prize draw to win £100! Don’t forget to take your copy of Village Eye with you on the day - this month’s magazine contains your programme!

Holiday Essentials

In fact, we have quite a few chances to win in this month’s magazine. The Anvil in Basingstoke are launching their International Concert Series for 2015-16 which will see conductors and musicians of International prominence come to The Anvil. They have kindly given us two pairs of tickets to give away to our readers. So turn to page 33 to find out all about the concerts and how to enter. And don’t think that’s all! Award-winning Jack Chen of Digifocus Photography brings us a fantastic competition this month, too. Jack’s Vita Lumière Studio is offering a “Bright Star Party” Portrait Party for up to seven people which will include a 10”x8” print for the lucky winner. To win this amazing prize and find out more, turn to page 17. Village Eye’s regular columnists are back this month with Jack Worboys reviewing the MG3 in his motoring column (p.23), our beauty editor, Megan, reviewing holiday essentials (p.6) and Eye Tech staying in the summer spirit with a review of Festival gadgets (p.12). You’ll be amazed at the tech available these days! Our film reviewer, Rob Barnes, gives his first ever 5 stars to his latest film review, Mad Max, Fury Road! Turn to p.35 to hear his thoughts.

Regular columnist Rowberry Morris Solicitors in Tadley tackle the tricky subject of contesting a will and tell us when an argument may hold weight (p.15). On the following page, Mark Penston, our Financial Advisor, tells us how recent changes to pension law have turned some of its basic principles on their head. Turn to page 16 to find out more.

Scarecrow Common

Wow, what an exciting week this year’s Burghfield Scarecrow Trail week turned out to be. With more people walking the trail than ever before, appearing in the Newbury Weekly News and a visit from BBC Berkshire’s breakfast show it was a packed week for those scarecrows. Not only this but the weather was perfect for “trailing”, ask any of the families you saw walking around Burghfield clutching those blue trail sheets.

2015 was the 4th year of organising Burghfield Scarecrow trail and it proved to be fabulous. £560 was raised to support Girlguiding in Burghfield. It really would not be possible to run the event without all the community support so the organisers would like to say ‘thank you’ to the scarecrow makers, the prize sponsors and those shops, businesses and community groups who helped by selling the trail sheets. Thank you Burghfield for a wonderful week of Scarecrow Trailing. Picture: First prize winners, the Garton family with scarecrows Ben and Holly

Hmmm...how shall we spend £1.95 million? That’s just what residents living in Spencers Wood and Three Mile Cross have been asked recently. Yes, their views are being sought on the best way to spend this pot of cash on sport facilities. Wokingham Borough Council secured the money from construction companies through planning agreements for the major housing developments coming to the area. £27,000 was negotiated for each new home being built for new or better infrastructure and facilities.

Part of this money is allocated to sport and leisure facilities. Other areas that will benefit are schools, roads and other community facilities. The borough and parish councils want to upgrade the existing grass pitches with improved drainage, construct a new full size multi-sport artificial turf pitch with floodlights and a fourteam changing room, plus car parking. The consultation will also look at ideas for the future of the former Ryeish Green Leisure Centre - currently a disused sports hall next to Oakbank School - including whether it can be refurbished and reopened and to make it self-financing in the long term. The local residents’ thoughts on these proposals and alternative uses have been welcomed, so watch this space!

Mortimer’s Good Too

Patients at The Mortimer Surgery will be pleased to learn that, after a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Mortimer Surgery has been awarded a rating of ‘Good’ which covers all aspects of patient care. Reception staff in particular were praised for their helpfulness and the nurses and GP’s were praised for their compassion and effective treatment. This can only be good news and a reassurance for users of the surgery, as well as a welcome acknowledgement for members of the hardworking team.

Congratulations to Ernest Furze, a resident of Theale, who recently turned 100! The landmark birthday was celebrated with a total of three parties across the week, the third coinciding with the 70th anniversary of VE Day which was held at a community group for pensioners in Calcot. Party goers enjoyed a nostalgic sing along, raffle, tea and cake. Mrs Codling who runs the group said, "Ernie is lovely, always joyful, always happy, he is brilliant." Enjoy your centenary, Ernie!

ongratulations to the organisers of the first-ever Tadley Tea Party! The event launched with great success last month with almost 1,000 people flocking to the ground of Tadley Calleva Football Club for this new Alice In Wonderland-themed music festival which included 12 hours of music and attractions. Those who went along on the day sampled food and drink from a number of local eateries, local boyband Concept played on the main Wonderland stage along with other acts including Johnny Marvel’s Blues Groove, The Firm and Rob Unique’s School Disco. Children were entertained with a number of

activities including fun fair rides, a bouncy castle and face painting, and artists from Concrete Sketchbook created a number features including a special Alice in Wonderland design. Best of all, the sun shone all day. The Tadley Tea Party has been able to donate a whopping £1,000 to the Helping Hands Charity who support local groups and organisations in Tadley. What an outstanding achievement for their first year. We’re looking forward to next year’s Tea Party already!

When Village Eye went to Mauritius!

Village Eye magazine has now made it all the way to Mauritius. Sadly for the VE team, it was just a printed copy which went and not them!

Ex-resident of Grazeley, John Sykes was recently visited by his cousin, Lisa, who made sure she took a copy of the Village Eye with her so that John could keep up-to-date with what’s going on in his old neighbourhood now that he’s moved his family to Mauritius. Here are all the kids - Stan, Evie, Annabelle, Charlie, Jessica and Little John - enjoying reading the magazine at Constance Belle Mare Plage resort. If you are going away this summer, don’t forget to pack your copy, click a pic and send it in!

DANCE PUPILS ARE ALL STARS Students at local dance school, All Stars, have been enjoying a taste of success recently with a number of dancers gaining accolades, scholarships and experiencing success at dance festivals. A number of students attending classes in Mortimer, Silchester, Theale, Burghfield and beyond, are on their way to the Hackney Empire for the National Dance Championships later on this month. Two ballet students from the Burghfield class have also been drawing attention. Lucy Fox, 13, successfully auditioned for the world-renowned Elmhurst School of Dance in Birmingham and will be leaving Willink School at the end of this term to start full time in September. Lucy was also offered a place on the Royal Ballet School Senior Associate programme, but decided to accept the place at Elmhurst instead. A young lady in demand! Lucy Frost, 12, also from Burghfield was awarded the British Ballet Organisation (BBO) Award at the recent residential “Dance Days” in Birmingham for the most outstanding dancer of the week. Lucy was awarded a free scholarship for BBO Dance Days in 2016. Louise Cleghorn, owner of All Stars, told us, “I am so proud of the students. They have worked really hard to get where they are and they are an inspiration to other students in the school.”

Burghfield Dental Practice has been using Enlighten Whitening since 2008 because of its guaranteed results. There are other whitening brands on the market, but results from these products are not guaranteed like they are with Enlighten.

Enlighten whitening can whiten up to 16 shades, though resultsAuclum do Green, vary. If it’s used correctly, Tarragon Way, Burghfield Common, Berkshire,allRG7your 3YU teeth will whiten dramatically. All it takes is just three visits to the practice and the rest is done at home. So how do they do it? First of all, the whitening trays are custom made for you. For this, there is a two week lead time. You then wear the trays overnight for two weeks. Don’t worry, they are thin and comfortable! The results are unbelievable and the practice has already helped hundreds of local people gain beautifully white teeth. Results can last indefinitely with some very simple maintenance (wearing the trays for 1 night every other month). And it’s really safe. The materials used in Enlighten whitening have been used in dentistry for over 100 years.

My Holidaiyals Essent The SPF. SPF is a vital step in my holiday routine as I don’t want to be covered in wrinkles by the time I’m 30 and I also don’t want to get back to the UK looking like a frazzled tomato. My go to SPF that I apply every day without fail is Boots’ Soltan Dry Touch Face Suncare Cream in SPF 50+, it dries matte so I don’t need to worry about getting an oily face and I know that I am protected from harmful UV rays. For just £5.50 from Boots it’s an absolute steal for the amount of protection it gives you.

The Foundation. I am absolutely in love with L’oreal’s Infallible 24H-Matte foundation for just £7.99. It rivals even my most expensive and well loved foundations, but what makes this one different is that it’s matte without that cakey finish, it looks like satin and it gives an effortless airbrushed finish. I would use this in the evening when I want a bit more of a fuller coverage and in the daytime by the pool I would mix it with my moisturiser to create my own custom tinted moisturiser.

Packing my make up essentials for my holiday is a daunting task. Countless times, I have arrived at my hotel to only realise I have forgotten my fave lipstick or mascara. Disaster I know, but, I also cannot take the whole contents of my make up collection with me. Whittling it down to my holiday must haves is essential.

The Mascara. I’m not the confident type that can go out and about with no make up on, so even at the pool I feel naked without a lick of mascara on. The best thing I have ever done is use waterproof mascara; it’s transformed me. I used to suffer with horrendously unattractive hay fever, which would leave my mascara running half way down my face 10 minutes after I left my house for work (not attractive at all). My favourite at the moment is by Clarins, it’s there Truly Waterproof Mascara for £18.90. I can honestly hand on heart say that my mascara has not run at all since using this, which makes it my perfect poolside partner.

Eye on Health & Beauty

The Lipstick. I am a lipstick addict, I collect more and more each week – isn’t Boots just so tempting? I have narrowed it down to my 2 favourites, which would easily take me from day to night on my holiday. First up is my daytime favourite, YSL’s Volupte Tint-In-Oil for £23.50 in the shade No 5. The formula of this lip oil/gloss is the most nourishing I have ever come across. At first the oil coats my lips and then it leaves a fuchsia pink stain which looks so natural, a very ‘my lips but better’ colour and I am in love. For night time my go to is Maybelline’s Colour Sensational lipstick in Plum Passion for £6.99. This lipstick has gone way beyond my expectations and lasts better than some of my MAC lipsticks. This bright purple would look amazing against a tan and I think it would suit most skin tones.

The Fragrance. I’m not usually into my perfumes like I am my make up. However, the fragrance Resort Collection by Ellie Saab has blown me away, it is a very fresh fragrance which can be worn day or night and I think it will be a winner for anyone. However, the only downfall with this perfume is that the fragrance doesn’t seem to last that long on the body, which is such a shame when it has a gorgeous fresh scent. But, that could be a good excuse to keep spritzing the perfume! The Bronzer. From experience my body tans (more like burns) whilst my face still stays as white as Casper the ghost. So in the evening when I’m going out for dinner I like to apply bronzer to even out my skin tone. For this I use my Clarins Aquatic Treasures Poudre Soleil Visage Summer Bronzing Compact which is definitely well worth the money. This is hands down my favourite bronzer/contour powder I have ever used, it transforms my face in seconds.

Hello Japan! by Hannah Rose

he 23rd World Scout Jamboree is fast approaching for tens of thousands of scouts and guides from almost every country in the world. For ten days, from the 28th July till the 8th August, they will gather in Kirara-hama in Japan, to experience and immerse themselves in new cultures, activities and have a once in a lifetime adventure.

WA: A Spirit of Unity is the leading theme this year. It encompasses unity, harmony, cooperation, friendship and peace and also represents the Japanese culture.

Scouting can proudly say that they are the UK’s largest mixed youth movement. Once traditionally thought of as an organisation for boys only, it is now open for everyone, and most importantly is so much more than tying knots and lighting fires! It provides a unique opportunity for young people and adults from 6 - 25 years to discover the outdoors and gain a range of skills and different abilities. For most scouts, being a part of something so big brings a sense of pride and achievement from collecting badges, making new friends globally and locally and truly becoming a big part of their community. More than that, the adventures scouting takes young people on range anywhere from Zorbing and Laser-tag to camping trips to Norway and rambling up Mt Snowdon. The Jamboree comes around once every four years and is hosted by a different country each time. The site in Japan has been specifically

tailored for this incredible event and is even home to a nature reserve where millions of wild birds visit! When they arrive in the land of the rising sun, the Scouts’ activities will allow them to gain knowledge on Hiroshima and what happened there, understand cultures from across the globe, and get active with a wide range of water activities on the nearby coast. Sounds like fun. Here in the VE region, we are very proud to report that over 20 scouts, guides and service crew have been selected to represent the UK movement which, added to the worldwide total of 27,000 participants plus leaders and support, makes the numbers of UK members jetting off, the largest contingent for this magnificent journey. As well as cooking and boiling water, the BioLite Camping Stove also has a USB port which will keep your smartphone charged while you eat. £185 from www.bangbangtents.com

How do you challenge a Will?

here are a number of reasons for challenging a Will, those include lack of testamentary capacity, lack of valid execution, lack of knowledge and approval, undue influence, fraudulent wills and forged wills. This article looks at lack of knowledge and approval in the light of the recent decision in Sharpe v Hutchins. A person must have knowledge of, and approve of, the content of their Will. They must know that they are signing a will and approve its contents. It is possible to contest a will on the basis of a lack of knowledge and approval, even if the Will appears to be validly executed and the testator had mental capacity but a claimant would have to show that the Testator was not aware of the content of the Will or that there were suspicious circumstances. In Sharpe v Hutchins the Testator had made a Will in 2011, leaving his Estate to a cousin and the children of a close school friend. In 2013 he made a new Will, leaving his entire Estate to Mr Sharpe a local builder, who had helped him with a leaking gutter free of charge.

Both Wills were homemade but validly executed in front of two witnesses. The 2013 will was witnessed by a financial advisor who was visiting the Testator, Mr Butcher, and by a plumber who was carrying out work at Mr Butcher’s bungalow.

FREE car park at rear of office Offices also at Tadley, Staines and Richmond EMAIL office@rmtadley.co.uk WEB www.rowberrymorris.co.uk

Mr Sharpe brought proceedings asking the Court to pronounce in favour of the 2013 Will which benefitted him. The claim was defended by the cousin and the children of the close school friend who would have benefitted under the earlier Will. The Judge concluded that she was satisfied that the 2013 Will was executed with the knowledge and approval of Mr Butcher and that he intended to give effect to his testamentary wishes, and she went on to pronounce for the 2013 Will. The Judge made her decision by concluding (a) that Mr Butcher had understood the 2013 Will when he executed it and secondly that he understood what the effect of the 2013 Will would be. The Judge found that any degree of suspicion surrounding the 2013 Will was relatively low and so upheld the fundamental principle of English law that Testators should generally be free to leave their Estate to whoever they wish. It is not up to a court to approve or disapprove of what a Testator does, but to satisfy themselves that the Testator knew and intended what they were doing. Pensions vs ISA’s with Mark Penston

ince the introduction of the new pension flexibilities it’s not surprising that we have seen a wave of enquiries from those who want to access their pension funds. Not all the enquiries are necessarily for the right reasons (it’s never easy to turn work away!) but nonetheless pensions are back on the financial agenda for many. For us the changes are of more interest from a financial planning perspective. Fundamentally it has turned some of the basic principles of our work on its head. For some, there were merits in endeavouring to empty pension funds before death. Now, in many cases, the opposite is true and pensions should be the last asset to access in retirement as they are now more attractive as inheritable assets. (In effect pensions live in an inheritance tax free bubble.)

Independent Financial Advice • Investments • Pensions & Retirement Planning • Inheritance Tax Planning • Long Term Care • Mortgages For an initial consultation call Mark Penston on:

0118 987 6655 markp@blueskyifas.co.uk www.blueskyifas.co.uk

It has also resurrected the debate as to whether you should save into a pension or an ISA. For many saving into a pension is definitely much more attractive than it used to be.

3 Chalfont Court, Lower Earley, Reading, Berks, RG6 5SY

According to HMRC, 45% of savers in stocks and shares ISAs are aged 55 or over. These savers will understand the advantages of tax free growth in ISAs and exactly the same treatment is available on funds held within a pension. ISA savings can be accessed at any time whereas pension savings can only be accessed after age 55.

BlueSKY Independent Financial Advisers LLP is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Your home is at risk if you do not keep up payments on your mortgage or other loans secured on it.

As a brief reminder, paying into a pension attracts tax relief at your highest rate. Withdrawing the funds can provide the first 25% tax free and the remaining fund taxed as income. ISAs do not attract tax relief when making the investment but do allow 100% tax free withdrawals. In an endeavour to illustrate the differences between funding an ISA vs a pension, the grid below looks at what you could get back from an investment of £15,000 out of post-tax earnings. In this case it is assumed that the investments grow at 2.5% per annum over 10 years.

Pension vs ISA returns including taxation aspects

A traditional and friendly law firm based in Theale, just off Junction 12 of the M4 offering a professional approach over a comprehensive range of Legal Services.

So there is a trade-off between ISAs and pensions. Investors need to think carefully about their individual needs as well as the tax perspectives. Pensions normally win if tax efficiency is important, but if flexibility is key then maybe it’s ISAs. Both products are excellent ways of saving money. Readers should be reminded that the new ‘flexi-access’ legislation only applies to money purchase pensions and not final salary pensions and that individual independent financial advice should be sought before any action is taken.

Manager, Andrew Stout told us “As big supporters of the Mortimer Fun Day and lovers of all things BBQ, we couldn’t think of a better challenge for the event!” If you fancy your chances on the day, please pop over to see the team on the day, don your pinny and get cooking! If you are not able to make this year’s Fun Day but would like to have a go at making your own burger at home, here’s an easy tasty little number for you to try:

Fiery Burgers 2 lbs lean minced beef 1/4 cup coriander chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 jalapeno peppers, minced 3/4 Cheddar cheese, grated 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp salt 8 buns

In a large bowl, lightly mix the meat with the seasoning ingredients and the cheese using your fingertips. Shape into 8 patties. Preheat barbecue on MEDIUM/HIGH, then brush or spray grids with vegetable oil. Place patties on the barbecue, and sear 2 minutes per side. Reduce heat to LOW and continue cooking another 2 minutes per side until juicy but cooked through. Refer to the guide for Perfect Grill Marks. Lightly toast the buns during the last 2 minutes of cooking time.

Calor in the Community Tucked away next to Mortimer Station is our local Calor Gas Centre which has been serving the community in Mortimer and surrounding villages for over 15 years. Newcomers to the village - and residents of surrounding villages - may not yet have discovered Mortimer’s Calor Gas and the fact that it’s not just gas that they supply. The centre is busy all year round supplying gas appliances and Autogas, then wood fuels and salt take precedence in the winter, followed by barbecues, charcoal and Camping Gaz in the summer months. So, if you’ve been eyeing up that gas barbecue for a while, or you’re looking to top-up you Camping Gaz before you load the car with tents and kit this summer, then look no further. Drive into Mortimer Station and you’ll find Calor Gas directly in front of you, with ample parking, at the far end... Spicing up the

Fun Day

robably one of the oldest pubs in Berkshire, The Hatch Gate Inn at Burghfield Village has been serving traditional ales and food since the XV1th century. Whilst its surrounding landscape may have changed dramatically throughout the years, the pub itself has maintained a certain ‘charm’ with its character oak beams, large open inglenook fireplace and original artifacts. That said, as with any long standing business, it has moved with the times and when it was taken over five years ago by Datchetbased restaurant owner Buddy Rahman - the pub underwent its most ambitious transformation in its 500 year history. Having already established a thriving Indian restaurant near Windsor, Buddy set about turning the Hatch Gate into a dual cuisine establishment which would now serve both English and Indian food. “I wanted to create a place which serves great food and welcomes everybody” Buddy told us. “Our customers can have the best of both worlds. If there is a party of four and three of them want an Indian but the fourth would prefer fish & chips it isn’t a problem - we are also able to offer this in our takeaway and delivery service”.

Have you enjoyed a Curry & a Pint at the Hatch Gate Burghfield Spices yet?

It isn’t just the inside which attracts customers either. In addition to the bar and restaurant areas they have a large garden with an enclosed play area for younger children - a rare ‘gem’ family find for British pubs these days! During the warmer weather, the team (most of whom were employed at the pub before the changes) make the most of the garden areas by hosting monthly Summer Indian BBQ’s. They also inflate their resident giant bouncy castle for the children - a very novel idea, rather village fete “esque” some might say.

Household Carpentry Kitchen Fitting Flat Pack Furniture Decorating Plumbing Tiling Household Repairs

With celebrations in mind, since his arrival in the area, Buddy has been keen to ensure that the pub is an established part of the community too. This year is no exception... The entire team will be at the Fairground in Mortimer on July 4th, where they will be serving a selection of mouthwatering curries and sundries to Fun Day visitors. Why not stop by and say hello!

here has been a resurgence in UK car marques in the last decade or so from a time where British cars makers were rubbish or bust. While not all makes have returned, Jaguar is nearly as strong as ever, Rolls Royce is back on top, Bentley have found their niche, TVR have just announced a 10 year - four model plan and MG, under new Chinese ownership, have won the 2014 British Touring Car championship. Given that the MG3 has now been around a couple of years I thought it was time I tried it for myself.

brash. This theme carries onto the interior which is spacious and offers good storage. The non-slip rubber tray on top of the dash that houses the aux connections is a nice touch. The rear seat and boot space, although not extensive, will most likely to be more than enough for most owners. As to interior quality it is no surprise you can tell there are some cheaper plastics present, but not intrusively so and everything feels very well screwed together. The leather seats in the test car felt great, but you’d sure hope so for £500 in car like this.

The small hatchback is a difficult sector to crack, but first impressions are good; it is a great looking car with very fresh look. It has the right amount of flair that you would expect from an MG without being too

Through the corners the car stays remarkably flat, yet somehow manages to not be at all jarring. This competent ride combined with great control weights on the steering and pedals gives the car a very nice feel when behind the wheel.

Initial signs look good, it would be good to try the 6 as well, but either way this is a well sorted car that should work wonders for the brand. And maybe, they are here to stay? With an SUV in the pipeline, this looks to be true. I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping they are, maybe even long enough to revive the sports cars that once made this company great.

Film of the MONTH

on Leisure

by Rob Barnes

Mad Max, Fury Road

the box office it’s so refreshing to see a film with real stunts that puts you right in the thick in the action. For petrolheads this film is a real treat as it’s not just the action that’s insane, so are the vehicles. From Furiosa’s juggernaut ‘War Rig’ to the tank-like ‘Peacemaker’ and the spike armoured ‘Plymouth Rock’ there’s a wacky racer for everyone.

ad Max: Fury Road is an all out assault on the senses... but in a good way! It’s the cinematic equivalent of thrash metal: insanely loud, ridiculously lavish and cranked up to the max (no pun intended). From the outset George Miller’s reinvention of his original classic franchise drags you kicking and screaming through an adrenalinepumped car chase that leaves other action films firmly in its wake. Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) is a lone road warrior haunted by a tortured past who roams a post apocalyptic wasteland, where the only currency is water and gasoline. Captured by the tyrannical Immortan Joe and his ‘War Boys’ army Max is bound, shackled, and used as a mobile blood transfusion for Nux (Nicholas Hoult) a rookie soldier

desperate to return to the battlefield. When fellow rebel warrior Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) goes rogue on a mission to collect a new fuel shipment with Immortan Joe’s five wives on-board all hell breaks loose. The ‘War Boys’, with Max and Nux in tow, hunt down Furiosa only for all three to join forces and make a final bid for freedom. This is a film light on dialogue and plot: Max’s opening monologue is one of the few occasions he completes a full sentence, and even Furiosa has little time for small talk in what is essentially one gargantuan chase sequence. This is why the film’s success is such a fine achievement, as it relies solely on the astonishing action set pieces and the sundrenched desertscapes to entertain and dazzle the audience. In a time where slick CGI and shiny superheroes rule

Book of the MONTH

Hardy brings a raw physicality to the role of Max that is compelling to watch, but it’s Charlize Theron who steals the show. With echoes of Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley in Alien, Theron’s Furiosa is a potent mix of brains and brawn with a vulnerability that makes her the most human character of all. And young brit Nicholas Hoult (of ‘Skins’ and ‘About a Boy’ fame) continues his assault on Hollywood with a charming turn as Nux, the puppy-like psychotic ‘War Boy’ turned good. Although this is a blockbuster movie it’s so fresh, bold and daring that it still feels a cult hit. The biggest challenge for Miller is how to improve on it for the second and third instalment that’s already signed off: I personally cannot wait. Rarely do you see a film that truly breaks the mould and sets a new standard in cinema, but Mad Max comes very close to doing just that. Buckle up and enjoy the ride! It’s a belting film, completely insane and my favourite so far.

"A belting film!" 5/5

The Adventures of the New Cut Gang

by Philip Pullman

Have you ever read a book by the world famous author, Philip Pullman? If not, then I would recommend a fiction crime story by him… The Adventures of the New Cut Gang!

age range 10+

This story includes six main characters: Thunderbolt, Benny, Bridie, Sharky-Bob, Zerlina and Angela. Thunderbolt is the character who the story is based upon and therefore you get most of his perspective. The story is about a gang of children who attempt to solve a coin forging crime and free Thunderbolt’s dad from prison. The team have to work together to share various mysteries, clue by clue! Is the famous shop owner: Mr Rummage, really the culprit? My favourite part is when they plan and carry out their investigation to see whether Mr Rummage is to blame. However, I think the story could be better if the gang had hidden hideouts for solving more secret crimes. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book for 10 – 14 year olds and I would give it four stars: ****. If you read it, you are probably going to laugh and have a great time Jasper Year 6, Aldermaston School. 35

Choosing a Nursery Jubilee Gems is a term time nursery in the beautiful Berkshire countryside. Offering exceptional childcare, for children from 2 years old. Providing an exciting range of learning and play opportunities; laying strong foundations for early education.

e understand choosing a nursery can be a difficult decision but parents can feel confident that their children are receiving high quality care, which will benefit them as they continue along their learning journey. One parent comments that, “Gems is a great place for younger children to interact and mix with other children and doing things that they would not have the opportunity to do at home.” Gems has specifically designed age appropriate play spaces, with individual gardens and a large paddock for the children to explore and discover their outdoor world. We have our own private woodland and working farm which is visited regularly and offers the children a wide variety of unique nursery experiences. At Jubilee Gems staff ensure that every day is full of fun and learning whilst ensuring that the Government’s Early Years Foundation Stage is embedded in everything that we do. Evidence shows that 2 year olds in nursery see real benefits in all 3 prime areas of learning.

If you would like your child to be part of the Gems experience or would like to become part of our growing team then please contact us today. Call Sian, our nursery manager, on 01189 834 018, email info@jubileegems.co.uk or visit www.jubileegems.co.uk

These foundations continue to be built on as the children enter pre-school and with their introduction to forest school learning. Teaching and many fantastic development opportunities enable your child to become an independent, confident young learner ready for their next step into school. We offer the 2, 3 and 4 year old funding along with a variety of sessions. We also offer transport. More information is available on request since it is limited with respect to place numbers.

Organise A Bug Hunt

Kids love creepy crawlies, so try a bug hunt! Print off a tick list from a site like www.naturedetectives.org.uk. Supply the kids with some plastic containers and off they go! Take photos of the bugs you find and make an explorer’s scrapbook. Make sure the kids put the bugs back where they were found, though.

Ice Cream In A Bag

All you need is 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, 1 tsp vanilla and 2 1/2 tsp sugar. Just pop the ingredients into a sandwich bag and press the air out. Fill a gallon size freezer bag half full of ice cubes, and mix with 6 tablespoons of coarse rock salt. Then put the sealed sandwich bag into the middle of the ice and seal. Toss the bag to each other for 10 minutes! Grab some spoons and eat it out the bag!

Make A Garden Waterslide

A homemade water slide is really easy and cheap to make, providing your kids with hours of good, old-fashioned fun. Spread out a tarpaulin on the grass, hang the garden hose up over the clothes-line, and direct the spray onto the tarpaulin. Make sure you drizzle some shampoo over the tarpaulin to make it slippery. And that’s it!

Recreate a Sports Day

Make som ice creame

It’s easy to organise a sports day at home. Create everything from the outfits to the medal ceremony. Mark out a start and finish line, then hold sprint races, egg and spoon, obstacle races and use beanbags for the shot put. Why not use chocolate coins for medals for the winners, too?

Have a Trip To The Beach

We’re not too far from the beach here in Village Eye territory and it’s always a hit with the kids. So pack up some food and drink, chuck in the buckets, spades and swimwear and spend the day on the beach. Fish and chips on the way home will finish the day off nicely too. Perfect.

Who Knew Tigers Could Fly?

xciting things are happening over at Tadley Tigers Rugby Football Club in Aldermaston, particularly in their Youth and Mini section of the club (U6s to U16). The Under 12s did particularly well last season, concluded by winning all of their Berkshire Trial Games, which included impressive wins against Reading and Hungerford. This young team are showing great potential, great communication skills and excellent defensive and attacking rugby. Tadley Tigers enjoys close links with London Irish RFC. Their Academy Director, Nick Kennedy, said of the team, “Tadley Tigers U12s...were outstanding with their on pitch communication.” This was backed up by an impressive eight players from the current U12s team being selected to be part of next

years U13 Berkshire squad as a result of the recent county trials. Tadley Tigers work well with London Irish who get involved at all levels of Tadley RFC. They have recently announced that the rugby club will be the host centre for their New Junior Player Initiative, launched to attract new boys and girls to the sport. Representatives from London Irish are there on the presentation days at the end of the season to present the team medals and trophies and have also run successful summer rugby camps at the club. Success stories abound from Tadley Tigers, and can affect life off the pitch, too. Take rising star Ethan Walters for example. Two years ago (and only after his first season), Ethan was invited to play for Berkshire County. He has since entered the London Irish Training Academy too. Now aged 14, his future potential for

the ‘lovely game’ has been spotted, which has resulted in him receiving the offer of a scholarship to Pangbourne College. According to our sources, the high standard of coaching offered by TRFC, and the attention to detail from the individual coaches have played a major part in this success story. Well done Ethan! Tadley are always looking for new players of any age and ability. They have teams to suit all levels from keen and ambitious players in the Senior 1st and 2nd team and social players can have fun in the 3rd and Vets teams. They also have their extensive Youth/Mini section catering from children aged from 5 upwards. If you’re interested in finding out more, contact the club via the website www. pitchero.com/clubs/tadley/
