Village awarded The Queen’s Award!

The CCB then needed details about MVP activities and letters of support from people and groups who have benefitted from MVP activities to support the nomination. The committee were thrilled when the nomination was accepted. 22 groups in Berkshire had nominations accepted and received a certificate from the Lord Lieutenant at a ceremony back in March. No more than a small handful of the groups who were nominated would receive The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, but to be acknowledged like this for their voluntary work was very special. However, very recently, the MVP heard that they have indeed been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. As a result two MVP members had the honour of attending a Garden Party in all their finery, hosted by the Queen and Prince Phillip at Buckingham Palace. The actual award (a certificate signed by The Queen and a special engraved crystal like this one) will come later.

MVP’s Rebecca & Lynn enjoying a day at the Palace With the annual Mortimer Fun Day, the Scarecrow Trail, Easter Egg Hunt and Sports Weekend, thousands of us across the region have enjoyed fun days out thanks to the village volunteers of the Mortimer Village Partnership. Last year, West Berkshire Council and the Community Council for Berkshire nominated Mortimer Village Partnership for The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for voluntary groups.

The MVP are very keen to make sure that the local community know that this award has been given as a result of the volunteering of the community as a whole. That includes every volunteer who serves at the Lunch Club, families who pick up litter at the Spring Clean, Mums and Dads selling refreshments at the Pantomime, those who put up tents at the Fun Day, deliver newsletters and collect Bags2School from pavements. It was the range and number of volunteers which impressed the panel that decided the award. So many congratulations to the MVP committee but also to the army of volunteers who support them!

Fancy walking to the

A campaign to ‘walk to the moon’ has now come to Mortimer and Theale after its initial Blast Off in Reading. Beat the Street is a real world walking or cycling game designed to increase physical activity levels. People can score points and win prizes by walking and tapping their beat the street card on a dedicated beat box. The challenge is for the residents of Reading, Mortimer, Pangbourne and Theale to collectively walk 238,857 miles in just over one month - the distance to the moon! Beat the Street Reading is being run by Intelligent Health and is funded by North and West Reading and South Reading Clinical Commissioning Groups. The project is also supported by Reading Borough Council. The overall aim of the initiative is to get people walking, cycling and generally changing their habits to get more physically active. Much to the excitement of the local school children, the Beat Boxes arrived in Mortimer and Theale on Thursday, June 26 and will stay until the end of the challenge on Tuesday 22 July. Lots of primary schools are taking part in the competition to walk the most miles in the hope of winning a share of the £5,000 prize fund for schools and businesses. Each school has a unique identity so that all of its students’ miles are added together and their individual progress is charted on the leader board online.

Page 1

Schools are also competing for extra prizes donated by LEGO Friends and LEGO Movie. ‘Spot prizes’ are being handed out every week from today to children and adults. These prizes have been donated by Reading FC and other local businesses and include two VIP Reading Festival tickets.

The challenge for the Reading community as a whole is going to walk the distance to the moon – a target of 238,857 miles. There was a great response from the Reading communities who had tremendous fun participating and have managed to walk just over 180,000 miles so there is still another 58,000 miles to walk until the target is met.

Which Investment Would You Choose? with Mark Penston Much of our work involves working with our clients to get the return on their hard earned money that they want or need in order to reach a goal (often retirement, but could be school fees, mortgage repayment etc). Generally deposit accounts are only appropriate for emergency money or reasonably imminent needs. Current low deposit interest rates reduce the attractiveness of this area of investment anyway.

So we have to look further afield for investments that have the potential to give the required returns. The merits of investing in property is a regular discussion that we have with clients. For some this may mean buying a property to let out and others have the view that ‘my house is my pension’. Property is, after all, a tangible asset that most people feel they understand. What people invest in is partly an emotional decision and being able to see and touch your investment certainly does have its attractions.

The point of this article is to highlight that property may not actually be the sound investment that you thought it might be. In the graph above the green line (B) is the Halifax property index and the red line (A) is a stock market balanced index (the average of a broad selection of shares – similar to a managed fund).

There are many ways to display the above data and much detail behind this subject that could be debated. Given the length of this article, the intention is simply to highlight that property isn’t necessarily the great investment that many think it is. We believe that it can form part of a diversified portfolio but in isolation it can be volatile and have practical and taxation implications that many overlook. Please note that this article only considers one aspect of investing in property which in itself is a much wider topic. No advice should be construed from this article.

Does your company need to

Add Visual Value?

Have you climbed on board the video marketing train yet? Chances are that if you work in Corporate, video is already beginning to ‘blip’ on your radar, but if you own a business or are in business for yourself, there’s a lot of compelling evidence suggesting that online video marketing should now be a major focus of your advertising and marketing budget too.

Fleetwood can produce very affordable web video in high quality for you. Moreover we will work with your marketing team to help them every step of the way along the creative process. From a simple concept, storyboard, and script and shoot, through to the edit and distribution of your finished film. And, If you already have a production partner, that’s fine too, as the studio can be dry-hired by them.

Businesses are increasingly turning to modern mediums to promote products or educate customers. They are also using the power of their visual communication productions to connect with stakeholders and staff. When you post an online marketing video to a business website, you’ve got a great chance of engaging with a busy executive who is specifically looking for your services but might not have reached out to schedule a meeting for a presentation. Your marketing video is a great way to get your elevator pitch out into the ether and let it reel in leads. Espares.com are a prime example of a company getting it right. With their online electrical spares and components advice - available on their own website and all over You Tube, their experts provide you, the end user, with step by step instructions on how to replace parts on ‘most’ domestic appliances. [you then go on to buy the required component or spare from their site] Clever. But that is just one example. In an age when savvy companies are turning to high quality video, and reaching beyond a white sheet, a handycam®, and the obligatory cheese plant in the corner of the boss’s office is no longer ‘in’ - modern production techniques are now surprisingly inexpensive.

Did you know that Youtube is now the world’s 2nd lalargest search engine? If you’re not using video marketing yet, you might be interested to learn that YouTube is now the World’s second largest search engine... And, according to research company, Forrester.com, adding video to your website dramatically improves the volume and quality of traffic from search engines such as Google, Yahoo (and YouTube) too. Their research has shown that an online video is fifty times more likely to hit the front page of Google than a single text web page. Whatever business you are in, we’d love to talk to you about your corporate video content. If you have just started thinking about video for your business and would like to start creating compelling videos in to order to showcase your products and services more effectively in-house, on TV, at events and across the web - then our door is always open.

Professionally shot and edited video for your website starts at £299+VAT

Located just 5 minutes from junction 11 of the M4, it is perfect for companies in the Thames Valley (no more having to incur the costs of travel into London or pay London prices when a studio is needed.) Budgets do vary (depending on the complexity of your required production), however - as a starting point, Fleetwood can offer a promotional web video shot professionally in our studio from just £299 plus VAT. Interested in knowing how we can work with you to promote your business with video? Please give us call to find out how to take up our offer.

We work with our clients to create engaging and memorable vvideo content to deliver their key messages in the right way for ttheir audience - whoever they may be.

Have you been to Berkshire’s best kept secret yet ?

TRUNKWELL HOUSE Many of us will have driven past the brown heritage signs pointing towards Trunkwell House in Beech Hill, but it is only a privileged number of us who have ventured down their sweeping driveway to take a peek...

vident in the early records of Beech Hill, the house dates back to 1190. The original Trunkwell House was pulled down and rebuilt in 1878. In 1881 the Census revealed that Trunkwell was actually a small village in itself. Even today it stands in 34 acres of beautiful Berkshire countryside.

and Events, many of their Brides choose to keep in theme with the Victorian House and era. Trunkwell’s splendid permanent marquee within the grounds of the house, lends itself to many themes. Over the years they have had Caribbean themed weddings and even had Las Vegas come to them! Trunkwell is so beautiful and exclusive that many celebrities have attended functions there too (though to protect their privacy, the staff at Trunkwell are keeping ‘mum’ as to their identities!) As well as Weddings, Trunkwell caters for small intimate gatherings, parties, afternoon tea, stag and hen do’s. In fact, it seems that there is no private occasion they cannot cater for. Trunkwell is also proud to offer conferencing facilities, corporate parties, team building events and family fundays.

In days gone by, Trunkwell was once very well known in the area for breeding race horses. The most famous horse to come from the Trunkwell stables was the winner of The Oaks in the 1880’s. In 1937 the Udall family bought the house and its beautiful grounds. During the Second World War the house was opened up to evacuees to provide shelter and safety. The house remained a family home until the son of the owner converted the house into a hotel soon afterwards.

Celebrating 25 years as one of Berkshire’s premier venues In 1990, the house was bought by Mr Robert Walton MBE which by our maths, means that next year he will be celebrating his 25th anniversary at Trunkwell. These days, the house is now used for a multitude of purposes. The perfect setting for exclusive and sophisticated Weddings

Trunkwell’s Christmas (yes, we did mention that word in July) Parties are legendary too. Providing glittering, indulgent festive affairs for companies and groups alike, their efforts to dazzle, cater for and entertain their guests is now one of the most popular places to go during the party season. This year is no exception, and the House will be hosting a Great Gatsby themed party in the Grand Marquee. Their dedicated staff will be whisking guests back to the roaring 20’s and the era of glittering jazz, art-deco and glamour. The Great Gatsby parties will run from 22nd November until 3rd January 2015. So, the next time you are in Beech Hill, don’t just drive past the gates, stop by and take a peek (and don’t forget to wish the current owners a very happy 25th anniversary at the same time!) Megan’s Moments

TEEN BBQ BITES by Megan Curtis

The summer is finally approaching and the exams are over (Yippee) - which means that we now have more time to get together with our friends, fire up the BBQ’s and celebrate! With an array of meats, vegetables and sides, it’s the epitome of summer... However, endless barbequing could mean that the food gets quite repetitive, which is why I have come up with a few easy ideas that may leave you drooling and hopefully inspire you with your next barbeque. Honey and Lime Chicken Skewers To do this, you will need a zest of a lime, 3 teaspoons of fresh lime juice, 2 tablespoons of honey, soy sauce, vegetable oil, garlic and ginger. If you are a fan of spicy food you could even add a teaspoon of Tabasco! Next, place all of the ingredients in a blender until smooth and then place ¼ aside. Once you have chopped up all of the chicken, place it in a freezer bag and the remains of the sauce from the blender and place it in the fridge for three hours to marinade. Once you place the chicken on the BBQ, cook for around 10-12 minutes and then drizzle the rest of the sauce over the top of the chicken and serve.

Mexican Burgers. Tired of the same old plain burgers? Try a twist on the classic. You could make your own burgers by using lean beef mince, however it will work just as well to buy burgers, especially if you’re catering for a large amount of people! Whilst the burgers are cooking on the barbecue, you can quickly whip up some guacamole and fresh salsa. For the guacamole, spoon out the flesh of two to three avocados and mix it with a diced onion, fresh tomatoes and coriander, perfect guacamole in an instant! Next, for the fresh salsa you will need to finely chop tomatoes, a chopped onion, 2 chillies, coriander, salt, lime juice and a tablespoon of water, simply mix together and you’re left with the perfect salsa. Toast the rolls in the oven and simply place the barbecued burgers in the rolls and load on the guacamole and salsa. And finally, for an added twist to sparkling or mineral water, simply get an ice cube mould and fill each cubed section half with water and then finely chop any fruit you like, such as strawberries, raspberries and kiwis and place it in the mould. Leave it to set in the freezer and once set, enjoy the fruity taste of your water or lemonade!

Yes! Manydown Family Fun is opening its doors once again this summer to welcome visitors from Saturday 19th July right through to Sunday 7th September. Manydown Family Fun’s maze is a key attraction for families visiting the farm. The maze is a giant living crop field and is just over two acres in size! In previous years the maze has been a smiley pig, a giant tractor, a honey bee and a Spitfire. The maze this year is an Owl - which we are sure is bound to be a ‘hoot!’! Alongside all the fun of finding your way to the middle, there is a terrific maze treasure hunt, too. Find the six hidden items in the maze - which will guide you to the centre - and you’ll get a special sticker to take home. Family tickets to Manydown Family Fun are available and once you pay for entry all the activities are included. Have a race on the go-karts, climb Mega Bale Mountain and enjoy the stunning Hampshire countryside by taking a 20 minute Tractor and Trailer ride or the woodland walk. Let’s not forget the farmyard animals, too! Manydown has all the favourites - pigs, sheep, goats, ducks, cows and a llama for you to see. Depending on when you come, you may see some piglets too. Get really close to the animals in the handling section where you can hold the baby chicks, rabbits and guinea pigs.

after a busy day, why not enjoy a bacon buttie, hot dog or burger? There are also sandwiches, crisps, hot and cold drinks and of course, ice creams! You are also welcome to bring along a picnic if you prefer. There’s so much to do this summer at Manydown Family Maze Open Fun 19th July Make a 7th September day of it! 2014

Choosing a School for your

Pupils from Mrs.Blands enjoying their Forest Schooling

Mrs. Bland’s Infant and Nursery School and Garland Junior School working in partnership...

n Burghfield, parents can choose two welcoming and forward thinking community schools – Mrs Bland’s Nursery & Infant and Garland Junior School.

Challenge for all is a common theme that runs through both schools. Mrs. Bland’s new and creative curriculum is designed for children to Launch, Engage, Develop, Innovate & Explore the National Curriculum in a creative and engaging way. In March this year OFSTED graded Garland Junior School as Good. It reported that pupils “make good progress in English and Mathematics” and that a significantly higher proportion of children make “accelerated progress in mathematics”. At Garland interesting and motivating lessons are provided through their innovative curriculum which includes Philosophy for Children. Mrs. Bland’s is unique amongst schools in the area in providing all its children with Forest School sessions. Many children in the 21st Century have fewer and fewer opportunities to be outdoors, get muddy and run freely. Weekly sessions help develop self-esteem and confidence through hands on learning in a stimulating outdoor environment. Garland Junior were described by OFSTED as a “harmonious community with high quality relationships.” Their dedicated team do their very best for every child in their care. Children leave at the end of Key Stage 2 fully prepared for the next stage of their education. On the site of Mrs. Bland’s, is Funzone, an out of school hours club for children from both schools. The team provides good quality, affordable childcare in a safe home from home environment. A fabulous solution for working parents. A Mrs. Bland’s parent identified “one of the important things was for my son to be able to walk to school, go to an after school club with local children and be with his friends”. Garland parents are “very pleased with the progress that their children are making” and how the school quickly identifies their children’s educational needs. Starting in the Early Years Foundation Stage, through Key Stage 1 and into Key Stage 2 the two schools work together to build a learning environment that excites and challenges. Mrs. Bland’s and Garland are open to prospective parents viewing their schools at any time.

Jubilee Day Nursery is passionate about the outdoors With access to over 40 acres of private woodland, paddocks and garden area’s all providing inspirational opportunities for the children to achieve and develop confidence through hands-on learning outside of the ‘class room’. No matter what the weather or season, we try to spend as much time as possible with the children playing outside. We strive to provide long term and regular fun experiences where the children have close contact with nature and have the time, freedom and space to explore the changing world around them. At Jubilee we have our own private woodland area ‘Roughwood’, which is a fantastic learning resource. It is a short walk from the nursery, the young children have time to trundle through the paddocks, spotting bugs and insects, collecting treasures such as feathers, seed pods, golden leaves and sticks - plus they have the added advantage of visiting the farm animals along the way. The practitioners extend the experience by singing songs, playing games and reenacting much loved stories such as ‘We’re Going On a Bear Hunt’. As children grow, they begin to demonstrate independence and gain an increased awareness of the consequences of their own actions. For example when paddling in the stream, they learn to negotiate and plan ways to cross without getting wet. Through watching their friends and through team activities, such as building a den, children learn to share tools, participate in taking turns and supporting each other. Because the children use all their senses, they learn to express themselves and develop a keen awareness as to what is going on around them. The children become fascinated by what they are doing and can concentrate intently for much longer than in a normal indoor environment. They take a keen interest in their natural surroundings, learn respect for the environment and they begin to notice how different trees and plants change over the seasons and years. Forest Schooling To enhance these experiences, our Forest Schools leader, Emma Hirst, delivers exciting and educational Forest Schools activities in our private woodland. Children throughout the nursery frequently visit our woodland and so when they start their Forest School activities at pre-school age they are familiar with and feel very comfortable in the environment. Each activity is child-led and allows self-exploration. From making dens for themselves or their teddies, whittling sticks to toast marshmallows with, sawing and drilling wood to make jewellery and learning to build camp fires safely - the children love the opportunity to show their independence and enjoy seeing what they have achieved or made during their woodland adventure. If you would like your child to be part of this unique learning experience, or would like to come and explore Roughwood for yourself, then please do not hesitate to contact us on 0118 970 1600. We have planned walks to Roughwood for children and grown-ups every Wednesday afternoon. So why not come along and join us?

Fiat Abarth 595 The standard Fiat 500 is great fun to drive, so a more exciting version sounds like the perfect budget ‘hot-hatch’. The 1.4L turbocharged engine creates 160bhp, around twice the power of the Fiat it is based on. Besides the engine, the suspension, brakes and tyres have all been upgraded. Performance The performance at low speeds is very impressive, first and second gears really do throw you back in the seat. Unfortunately this urgency is lost a little in the higher gears which is a shame, although this is much less noticeable when driving normally. Another issue is turbo lag, which means there’s a delay between pressing the pedal and feeling any power from the engine. To me a little hot hatch like this should be really eager and responsive, which is something the Abarth lacks at times. Ride and Handling The ride is one of the first things you notice about the Abarth. The problem they faced making the Fiat into a performance car is that it’s narrow and high, so it tended to roll and wallow about. To cure this Abarth have lowered the ride height and fitted hard springs. So it handles like it’s on rails and there’s no body roll; problem is to have all this cornering ability the ride

quality is pretty poor and is something that will turn quite a few buyers away. Interior There is not much new about the interior, they have just swapped the main controls and front seats. The chunky leather wheel is nice and the body hugging seats are comfortable and supportive. The upright seating position is not very sporty but you soon get used to it. As most of the interior is shared with the Fiat, it is adequate for this size of car but nothing special. It doesn’t feel like a premium interior, but at this level of performance you aren’t paying premium prices. Conclusion So this car has quite a few shortfalls, does this mean it’s not worth the money? The Abarth offers more than what’s on the parts list. It feels special, exotic even, compared to the other cars around it on the road. It feels like a baby italian super car, and like most Italian super cars it’s not perfect, there’s a number of shortcomings but it makes you feel special, so you just call those shortcomings “character” and carry on grinning wildly. Yes people will be put off by the rock hard suspension, but this car offers something that cars worth a great deal more than the Abarth are lacking, character.

Unique Outdoors at Wokefield Park introduce

Zorbing How excited are we?

Answer: very excited! The team at Unique Outdoors seem to have a never-ending capacity for fun and they’ve just proven this again with their most recent addition, a Zorb Racing Track!

Based within the grounds of Wokefield Park, Unique Outdoors is well-known for its adventurous outdoor activities for small kids as well as ‘big kids’. These already include Woodland Laser Combat, Abseiling, Powerfan, High Ropes, Segways, Trapeze, Survival Skills, Archery and Mud Buggies! There have been many local children holding fantastic birthday parties there for a number of years as well as local ‘grown-ups’ taking part in stag and hen weekend activities. So now Zorbing has been added to the fun and games. Err...what exactly is Zorbing? A Zorb is a large, plastic ball that you can stand in, run in, roll in and jump in. It was originally invented by two friends from New Zealand in 1994. Their idea was to create a safe inflatable ball that people could get inside and roll around on the water. The activity took off like you wouldn’t believe and Zorbing was born. The Zorb ball soon found its way on land, as people discovered it was as much fun to roll down hills or play “bumper Zorb” with their friends. The combination of safe fun and the adrenalinefilled time you can have with a few Zorb balls has made them a sure-fire hit.

Unique Outdoors now has a twenty metre Zorb Racing Track and four Zorb balls waiting for you and your friends. The activity is suitable for all ages from 4 to adult (good health permitting - it’s quite a work out!). Are you up for the challenge?

Whether you’re looking for activities for a group of friends, a stag or hen weekend or a children’s birthday party, Unique Outdoors can offer a standard package or a tailor-made mix of activities to suit. And you can rest assured that the professional instructors are fully qualified, insured and most of all friendly and supportive when you need it most!
