So, you may be getting more organised and have your gift list ready, but spare a thought for the Big Man who still has lots of little people to listen to. You can visit Santa at Tadley Pets this month, and also see lots of Santas together - raising money for the Air Ambulance on the region’s annual Santa Cruise. This year, there’s a special invitation for you to join them on Saturday 20th December when the real Air Ambulance will be paying a visit! If you can’t get enough of Christmas and you’re planning a trip away, then our travel writer, Michelle Goulding, tells us all about her visit to Wurzburg in Germany where the town hosts a traditional German Christmas market. Relive the festive lights and sights on page 26 as we welcome Michelle to Village Eye. Christmas or no Christmas, normal life does need to carry on alongside! Our Finance and Legal experts are here this month with some interesting articles. Rowberry Morris Solicitors in Tadley explain how a Civil Partnership can now be legally converted to a marriage. It may sound complicated but there are some very simple steps to follow on page 10. Mark Penston of Blue Sky Independent Financial Consultants brings us his feedback and advice on Tax Break Schemes. These schemes often sound too good to be true - and usually are!

We’re aware that moving house is on the agenda for many people in the New Year, too, so if you’re planning on selling your home in 2015, your Christmas may be less rest and more action. Our article on p.18 might help you make the most of your time and make your property as attractive as possible to potential buyers. Good luck!

Community eye Champions Award WINNERS On Community

We are so proud to announce that the organisers of the annual Santa Cruise are this months winners! receive their award from , Christian Frankum and Glyn Townsend Kate Martin From TVAA and The well-deserved ‘Santas’ Gareth Green Shaw Hellen Editor VE ing, Read Get David Berry - Holiday Inn, Alan Bunce

Well, what can we say... When we launched the Community Champions Awards in conjunction with Get Reading and Holiday Inn Reading West at the beginning of the year we had no idea just how many unsung heroes and charitable folk we’d uncover. We have been truly amazed (and humbled) at some of the nominations and stories we’ve received over the past twelve months. In some cases, there were multiple nominations for the same person - but for this month’s recipient(s) we had more nominations over the year than any other... So, it is with great pride that we announce the recipients of this month’s award... Gareth Green, Christian Frankum and Glyn Townsend - the organisers of the Burghfield and Area Santa Cruise. From its humble beginnings ten years ago, these amazing chaps have, between them and their merry following of Santas raised an astonishing £70,000 for our local Air Ambulance! So significant is this amount to the charity, the Air Ambulance wanted to personally come down to see the award being handed over and say thank you to the gents behind this much anticipated annual charitable event. Kate Martin, Area Fundraiser for TVAA told us “We are truly thankful to the Santas and the incredible lengths they go to every year to raise the money they do. £70,000 over a ten year period is a huge amount to us - we are funded entirely by donations and the Santas’ efforts go long way to recovering the much needed funds to pay for our missions. We’d like to say a bigger thank you to those that support the Santas each year too. And, to mark our fifteenth year and to celebrate the Santa Cruise’s 10th birthday, this year we will be deploying the Air Ambulance to Burghfield to join the them at the start of the Cruise on Saturday 20th December for some fun & games! Oh, and you’re all invited!” Our very own Village Eye Santa tells you all you need to know about this exciting news on the next page! Exciting stuff :)

Then, we have some exciting news!

Last year I made a visit to Tadley Pet Supplies on Heath End Road in Baughurst (with some of my reallife friends). I had a great time meeting so many children and families before I went off back to Lapland to get ready for the big day. This year, I am coming back with some of my friends on Friday 5th December between 4:30 - 5:30pm. If you’d like to come and say hello, I’d love to see you then. There will be a raffle with all proceeds going towards Burghfield & Mortimer First Responders. Oh, and Father Christmas will be there too (even thought he’s a busy man at this time of year) and will have free gifts for all the children too!

The Loddon Valley Lions will also be bringing Father Christmas to our streets on his magical sleigh this Christmas. To see if he’s coming down your road, just go to the Village Eye website www. villageeye.co.uk and click on ‘Santa Stops’ to see the dates and route that he’ll be taking this year.

Colour Me Beautiful at

KAVEN Hair & & Beauty this Christmas Hair, Nails, Skin, Colour, Make Up and Style are all on many festive gift lists - but after reading this, we are sure that there will be more on your seasonal ‘wish list’ this year

ver the years, beauty salons have evolved. Once a haven for ladies who ‘lunched’, offering facials, manicures and the like, treatments and procedures that were once only available in medical spas and doctors surgeries are, commonplace these days in an increasing number of specialist beauty salons all over the world and accessible to all. Kaven, a hidden gem in Theale is one such ‘haven’. Providing treatments since 1984 and subsequently opening their original salon in Theale some 22 years ago, they have adapted their offering to move with the beauty trends and regimes of the modern woman (and an increasing male clientele too). Whilst they continue to offer an extensive array of ‘traditional’ beauty treatments for the body, hair and face, Karen Mech, Kaven Day Spa’s owner, spent some time with us to explain some of the more ‘modern’ treatments and procedures on today’s menu.

Botox and Facial Fillers - From £150

As one of the first salons in the UK to offer this procedure, they have been helping their clients to reduce the signs of time for over 20 years now. No longer considered taboo, Botox and facial fillers are now an acceptable and affordable way of eliminating fine lines and wrinkles. To meet the growing demand for these treatments, Kaven are pleased to have partnered with Dr Firhaas Tukmachi [as seen on Channel 4], who is now a very popular addition to their team.

Microdermabrasion - From £25 (in a course of ten)

A more intensive type of facial, Microdermabrasion is performed by passing a hand held device that uses a highly controlled flow of fine, medical grade crystals over the skin. These crystals, delivered at high velocity onto the skin surface, are immediately vacuumed away, taking the top-most layer of dead skin cells with it. This skin exfoliating process improves the tone and texture of the skin and also reveals the new, living skin

cells that are soft and smooth. At the same time the underlying epidermis is also stimulated by the treatment and this promotes new collagen, thickening the dermis and improving the resistance to the effects of ageing. This treatment is great for acne, pigmentation patches and open pores.

It’s a Hair Affair this Christmas

Every woman knows the importance of finding a good hairdresser who can be trusted to create lovely hairstyles - and the same can be said for our menfolk too. With experienced stylists offering everything from children’s ‘trims’ and men’s haircuts to ladies colours, perms, cuts and tints, the salon is a one stop shop when it comes to all things ‘hair.’

This Christmas, Kaven are off ering a Full Head of Highlights, Cut & Blow-dry £75 Universal Body Contour Wrapping from £62.50

Universal Contour Wrap aims to shrink your body by a minimum of 6 inches, detox your skin and leave you feeling toned and tightened in only two hours (perfect for kickstarting a New Year detox.) With results guaranteed to last for four weeks or more, this is perfect for those special ‘dress’ moments.

Laser Hair Removal - From £25

There are many methods of body hair removal and even more reasons for wanting to eliminate unwanted hair. At least eighty percent of women and fifty percent of men use some hair removal technique. As well as traditional waxing methods which temporarily remove hair, Kaven also offer laser hair removal for a more permanent solution. This method of removal works by sending a safe laser beam to the hair follicle with enough energy to destroy the root without affecting the surrounding area. Once the follicle is dead, hair will no longer grow.

As part of the colour consultation you will be given the knowledge and skills to apply your daily make-up or create new looks with confidence.

And if this Christmas calls for a set of festive nails, then you’ll be spoilt for choice this season. Offering a variety of treatments for ladies & gents ranging from manicures, & pedicures including non-chip gel polish, nail extensions, and acrylic too, the salon has a selection of over 300 different polish colours to choose from. So that’s the skin nails and hair taken care of - but what about the rest of you? A recent and exciting addition to the Kaven team is the arrival of Rebecca Creedy-Smith, a Colour Me Beautiful Image Specialist.

Many women would admit that they are confused by colour and that they don’t know where to start, what suits them or even how to mix and match. Well, don’t they say that every cloud has a silver lining and that we all have a guardian angel? Looking good isn’t a luxury, it’s something everyone can achieve regardless of age, size, budget and lifestyle... But where to start?

Colour & Make Up Consultation

If you’re not sure where to start then Rebecca recommends that you begin with a Colour Analysis - as colour is the simplest and most effective way to improve your look. Colour is very powerful in changing your look and wearing colours that flatter you will enhance your best features and instantly make you look more vibrant and younger.

Style Consultation

Understanding your body shape is the first step to knowing what styles you should invest in, A Style Consultation will help you understand what suits your figure and why and provide you with the tools you need to make the right clothing choices thereafter, so the days of “what shall I wear?” will become history. The cost for this Consultation is £95. So, it looks like whatever is on your style and beauty agenda this Christmas, Kaven is the place to go. And, if you are reading this and still have presents to buy for your loved ones and friends, then it’s worth mentioning that Kaven also offer a clever little voucher top up system - see their advert below for more details. These vouchers are also redeemable against Colour Me Beautiful Sessions.

Dubbed Cyber Monday, Monday 1st December sees the start of the silly season online as millions of shoppers turn to their trusted devices to buy presents on ‘tinternet’. Here are my top tips to help you keep your hair on, wallet safe and sanity intact whilst shopping online this year.

ome December 1st, online stores will be bending over backwards to get your online business by offering some really crazy deals, including next day deliveries right up until Christmas Eve For some, it’s as if they’ve banished the idea of the January Sale in favour of pre-Christmas clearouts! Internet shopping figures frequently peak on the first Monday in December, thought to be a combination of the last payday before Christmas falling on the previous Friday and a weekend spent browsing the shops before buying from home. Visa Europe predicts £450 million will be spent on its cards alone as online transactions top 7.7m, an increase of 16pc on last year, potentially making this the busiest online shopping day in history. But it’s important to know how to protect yourself from online fraud or being directed to a fake website or counterfeit goods to avoid nasty surprises at Christmas.

According to research from Barclays and Kaspersky Lab, more than four million people have fallen victim to online fraud in the UK since last December, with an average loss of £371. With this in mind, here are my top tips on how to protect yourself while shopping online: • Keep contact details up to date: ensure your bank has up-to-date mobile/telephone contact numbers for you so they can speak to you if they spot unusual or suspicious activity on your account. • Look for the ‘S’: only ever access your internet banking or shopping sites by typing the address into your browser - never go to a website from a link in an email and then enter personal details. Always ensure when transacting online that the URL starts HTTPS rather than HTTP, or has the gold padlock icon, and use only official apps for mobile banking. • Use strong passwords: passwords should have a mix of letters (upper and lower case) numbers and symbols –

We would like to wish all of our clients a very Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year! With creative flair and strong attention to detail we can provide eye catching excellent food at affordable prices. CANAPES - FINGER FOOD - HOT & COLD BUFFETS Whatever your event, let us take care of the catering...

avoid obvious things like your name, birthday or phone number that others can guess. • Only download trusted retailers’ apps and check the comments to make sure they are genuine. • Log out after shopping and save the confirmation email as a record of your purchase, and make sure you have registered your cards with Verified by Visa or Master Card Secure Code. • That old chestnut... If a deal looks to good to be true, it almost always is! And finally, if the on-line ‘thing’ isn’t your ‘thing - or the item you wanted is not in stock, then remember that there are plenty of local shops and businesses who have a plentiful supply of Festive gifts available... And they’d be very glad of your custom too! Merry Christmas to you all!

The Conversion of Civil Partnerships to Marriage...

ince 2007 many civil partnerships have been entered into. If you are already in a civil partnership you may feel a little disgruntled, having spent out on the big day already when, if you’d have had the choice, you’d have married instead. However, it has been announced that, from 10 December 2014, there will be no fee payable for converting a civil partnership to a marriage as long as your civil partnership was entered into before 29th March 2014 (the date you could legally marry) and the conversion is registered before 9th December 2015.

The process for conversion will be: You must both attend an appointment, in person, at a register office, not necessarily the one where you registered your civil partnership

James W Fisher Property Maintenance

PAINTING & DECORATING All interior and exterior decorating, carpentry and small building work. 25 years experience. CONTACT JAMES TODAY FOR A FREE QUOTATION. No job too small:

You will need to have with you, proof of identity and of your civil partnership registration. The conversion happens when a couple signs a declaration that they’ve not dissolved their civil partnership and both want to convert it to marriage. The declaration must be signed at the register office. The conversion will be registered and a marriage certificate back dated to the date of your civil partnership will be issued There is no formal ceremony necessary.

It may seem a little unromantic, but on considering a conversion from civil partnership, it would be wise to consider financial matters at the same time and think about making a postnuptial agreement. If one was already entered in to before the civil partnership then this would be a good time to review it. So much can happen in a few short years. Perhaps, you now have a child, career change, or an elderly parent has moved in with you. Changes can occur at any time, which mean you may want to look again, or for the first time, at your financial arrangements, and what you would want to happen if, in the unlikely event you were to separate. In the same way that we never think that our houses will burn to the ground, we still insure against this; most of us never think that our relationship will fail. Most won’t. But some do. Why not have a similar insurance which will prevent the potential for huge dispute in the event of separation? Both of you will know where you stand and you can simply do with the document as you would an insurance policy – throw it in the back of a drawer and forget all about it – until the need arises! o it’s almost THE BIG DAY and I’m sure a lot of you are doing the annual last minute scramble for presents. What seems to be a great option for a petrol head is a track day, you can buy a voucher that allows the recipient to choose from a wide range of activities, but are they any good? Obviously there is a mind bogglingly wide variety of these events available around the UK, so here is my personal experience of an event I recently attended.

seat shouting instructions over the din of the engine. We regularly exited the corners facing in completely the wrong direction, but always parked the car wearing a massive grin. Although, before long, the progression was visible, everyone was improving from their first run of the day. Once we had all had a good chance to learn drifting on the main track we were introduced to a small figure of eight track. In the second half of the afternoon we got a chance to drift round this new course, followed by practicing doughnuts. This was all very fun, although after two minutes of constant doughnuts I was feeling a little worse for wear…

Property of the Month The voucher was bought for me as a birthday present a year ago and I finally got round to booking it in August this year. The voucher was for a drifting experience in a Westfield sports car. Despite being at Donnington Race Circuit, the action doesn’t happen on track, rather in a car park just outside. The idea is to learn to drift the car round a series of cones at a safe distance from anything solid. For Tadley round office Four Bedroom Detached those of you who aren’t aware, drifting is the art of sliding a corner whilst retaining full control of the car. It normally involves Family Home ruining a pair of tyres in the process, which I can assure you is a lot of fun.

The day had been amazing, but there was more to this event than just having a laugh. During the debrief at the end of the day, the instructor, who was also a rally driver, explained he had lost his brother in a car accident around ten years before. This led him to this job in order to teach others about car control in the hope that if one of them got into a crash situation they may be able to use what they have learned and avoid a crash. For me, the day was very exciting and greatly informative, and I would love to do it again. It makes a great present, so if you are running low on time and ideas, this may well be the perfect answer.

Last month I described a scenario where careful financial planning could reduce income tax liability to 1.36%. It reminded me of the number of clients that have come to us with press cuttings or brochures of various ingenious schemes that claim to reduce tax liability. Such schemes allegedly receive tax breaks for investments ranging from films and commercial property to car parks and precious metals. They are targeted as much to the general public as they are the rich and famous. On the whole our experience with these products has been poor. While often marketed as innovative products with a high degree of certainty for obtaining tax breaks we have found most of these schemes are expensive, complex in structure, provide poor service levels and are regularly challenged by the Revenue. In recent years HMRC have challenged many schemes claiming to offer tax breaks. HMRC’s remit is of course to maximise tax revenue and with current economic pressures they are being relentless in doing so. The recent guidance from HMRC on these matters warns against such products and provides what I think is good guidance for all:-

No matter how positive the provider of the scheme may be, remember that it is the individual who is liable to pay tax and any penalties that may be levied for inappropriate tax declarations. If successfully challenged by HMRC such schemes may create additional tax liabilities that were not intended, so you could end up paying more tax than you were trying to avoid. In the opinion of HMRC the majority of tax saving schemes don’t work and you may get little or no support from the provider in fighting your case. All such tax saving schemes must quote an HMRC reference number, but this doesn’t mean that tax relief will be granted. Prior approval is normally not available. To add further insult to injury HMRC may demand up-front payment of tax while they challenge the case in order to ensure that individuals do not get the cash flow advantage of a deferred tax payment. As described last month, there are many ways of limiting tax liabilities through careful, timely financial planning (often in conjunction with the use of a good accountant). So, in our opinion, there is rarely the need to pursue schemes that do not have prior tax relief approval even if they have positive legal judgments and reviews.

Homes & Gardens

Keeping your home is a good idea for ewv ell maintained and up-to-date you’re considering p eryone, and even more so if utting your home on the market in the New Year.

pring is one of the busiest times for Estate Agents. Homeowners planning to put their homes on the market shouldn’t wait for the sun to come out before getting ready to sell. Making a little time over the Christmas and New Year Break to prepare can make the whole process much smoother. If you’re thinking of selling your home in the New Year, here are a few things you can do now to get ready for a spring sale!

Start Packing

Yes, really. It may sound a bit unnecessary to start packing months in advance of your move, but you might as well start the process now. Of course, you can’t pack things that you regularly use, but you can sort through your cupboards, loft or garage to decide what you want to keep, what to give away and what to sell. Be ruthless! Store the items you’re keeping in cheap, bright storage boxes in your loft or garage. Boxing up items like this will make your storage space look larger and neater when it’s time to show your home, too.

Clear Away the Clutter

When you look around a staged show home, you’ll never see children’s artwork stuck on the fridge or a pile of shoes by the door. We all know that everyone has clutter in the real world, but buyers want to see a fantasy version of your house. Put away items that are regularly on your kitchen sink and pack away the family photos that gather dust.

Improve Your Home

You probably don’t want to do a major, expensive renovation project before you sell, but you should make minor repairs and improvements that will make your home look fresher to buyers. According to research, it usually takes around 20 seconds for a buyer to decide they like your home after walking into it. Making sure that all entrances are uncluttered, warm and welcoming create a good first impression. Doors should open properly and porches should be cleared of coats, boots and junk. You can create the illusory effect of a much larger space in your hallway by the strategic placing of a mirror to maximise light. It makes a nice, pleasant touch to have fresh flowers on display, too.

(A good rule of thumb is to keep your home neutral - in colour, and in taste as it can go a long way to making your home saleable). If you’re burdened with an inexpensive looking kitchen but haven’t got the budget to change it, you can still transform an outdated look with replacement worktops and new cupboard fronts or even just new handles. Freshening up tired grout also gives tiles an instant facelift. If you have basic taps and handles in the kitchen or bathroom, change them to chrome or brass fittings to transform the look of the suite.

Kerb appeal

Purchasers form strong and immediate impressions about how a home looks on the outside, so make sure yours halts them in their tracks. If you can, it’s advisable to repaint all exterior woodwork. £60 should buy enough paint, filler and brushes to radically improve the look of the standard three-bedroom family home. Remember to paint at least six weeks before placing your home on the market, as the smell of fresh gloss is a dead giveaway. We all love our home and all its quirks. But after a while most of us stop seeing the clutter, the marks on the wall and the stain on the rug. Viewers do see it, though, and will appreciate a well-turned out house. So try some of these suggestions and you might be surprised about how much more appealing your home becomes to buyers. Good luck!

Once viewers get past your entrance hall, all of the other rooms come need to back up that great first impression. Try to put yourself in the position of a home buyer. What do you notice? Do dark or heavily patterned carpets dominate the living room? Or is there a stubborn stain that catches your eye? Think about some new flooring or the tactical placement of rugs. Dressing the windows can also make a huge difference. Throw out old or worn curtains and invest in some brand new ones. There are plenty of quality made-to-measure curtains at affordable prices. Declutter the window sills (yes, it’s all about decluttering!) and clean the windows to finish the job. You’ll be surprised at how much better a room can look. The state of repair of a kitchen or bathroom can make or break a sale. Most importantly, ensure all sanitaryware is in pristine, clean condition. If you have a coloured suite, replace it with clean, light, space enhancing white - the preferred choice for homebuyers.

Festive Break?

In the heart of the Old Town of Würzburg one of Germany’s most picturesque and enchanting Christmas Markets attracts thousands of visitors every year. Lucky enough to have visited this Christmas hotspot, local travel writer Michelle Goulding tells us about her experience.

ith both hands clasped tightly around a steaming glass mug, the crisp winter air showing the effects of my warm contented sighs and a nose that would give Rudolph a run for his money… I breathe in deeply and enjoy the spicy citrus bouquet exuding from my cup. These aromas coupled with toasted almonds drifting from a nearby wooden hut can mean only one thing; the festive season is upon us and I’m getting in the spirit with a trip to the country which undoubtedly does Christmas markets like no other….Germany. Previously, I have pushed my way through the crowds in Bath, ice skated around the markets in Edinburgh, enjoyed muscles and mulled fruit beer while soaking up the atmosphere in Bruges and chomped my way through Raclette, Rösti and chocolate in Basel – all while perusing various Christmas gift ideas. This year, I’ve opted to head to Germany to do the markets in a truly traditional manner. I decided to shun the vibrant and expansive city of Berlin and its’ sixty Christmas Markets and have landed in the smaller town of Würzburg.

of the majestic Romanesque church and each offers something different for my over-enthused Christmas-loving soul. I wander through the narrow lanes and purchase a variety of items from authentic wooden Christmas tree decorations, nativity scenes, traditional smoking men and the instantly recognisable wooden nutcrackers. Then there is the food, no trip to a Christmas market would be complete without at least one sausage in a bap (I had several) with curry sauce and a glass or two of mulled wine, followed by some Stollen. After all those additional calories, it is time to explore this beautiful town. Würzburg, which lies on the River Main and is the start of the aptly named “Romantic Road”, was a medieval town. It was completely destroyed in the World War II by British Lancaster Bombers shortly before the German resistance was defeated. The majority of the town has been completely rebuilt – including the grandest of the buildings in this town – the Residenz. I start by taking a stroll across the Alte Mainbrücke – a bridge decorated with statues of Saints. Once across the

bridge, I take a hike up the hill and through the vineyards to the Fortress Marienberg. The view across the river of the 100 churches and the Cathedral makes me forget the sausage related stitch in my side! From there, I head to the Julius Spital – a hospital. The reason for the visit is unrelated to my over-indulgence, this place houses the second largest winery in Germany and is great for tasting the locally grown and award-winning Frankenwein – most of which is served in the distinctively shaped Bocksbeutle. It is with a heavy heart and a full stomach, that I leave this pretty town after a long weekend. I am laden with wooden gifts, candles and gingerbread houses. I may be several Euros lighter and many pounds heavier but this has been the perfect beginning to the festive season. Next stop....Christmas Carols around the tree in Mortimer!

After a short flight and an hour on the efficient and always punctual ICE train, I arrive in the picturesque town of Würzburg. After a quick Pinkelpause (as they say in Germany), I head out to soak up all this town has to offer. I let my nose be my guide and head towards the mixed scents of bratwurst and glühwein. Before long I’ve arrived at the main square which contains around 100 wooden chalets decorated with lush green holly intertwined with fairy lights. These festive stalls are set within the backdrop

Wintertime at Jubilee At Jubilee our aim is to inspire and motivate children to become confident independent learners.

inter is a really magical time here at Jubilee Day Nursery. It begins when the outdoor Christmas Lights get switched on in early December, a fantastic display including a large Father Christmas, LED Snowmen, Penguins, Polar Bears, Toy Soldiers and even Trains. The children love seeing the lights twinkling in the evening and early morning darkness. This time of year we also look forward to a very special event in our winter calendar; our Winter Wonderland Walk. Where all our children’s parents, siblings and grandparents join us on a walk through our farmland, down to our private woodland area, affectionately known as Roughwood. There we sing carols and Christmas Songs around our Christmas Tree. There is hot chocolate, coffee and mulled wine so everyone can enjoy a crisp festive winter’s evening.

nothing they love more than wrapping up warm and being outside searching out frozen cobwebs, crunching their boots on frozen leaves and pretending to be puffing dragons! The children often walk to the woods in winter time to feed our animals too – and they even help break the ice when the duck pond gets frozen! If you would like your child to be part of this amazing learning experience on a part-time or full-time basis please contact one of our nursery managers.

t primary schools throughout the land the nativity play is probably one of the most looked forward to events of the school year. Although the core Christmas plot remains (loosely) the same, these festive spectaculars have moved on considerably from the old dressing gown and frayed tea towel we remember of our own festive ‘spectaulaires...’ These days you are more likely to see custom made, designer costumes, a light and sound desk and a script that bears only a vague resemblance to the traditional story we all know and love. Providing parents, friends and relatives with a show to behold all shows, schools have evolved over the years, searching for new and innovative ways to spread the Christmas message. Finding parts for a hundred or more children takes quite a bit of imagination if the ‘Director’ is to avoid a heavenly host of 30 angels or a flock of 50 sheep. It is inevitable then that some more obscure characters find themselves making an appearance on the stage Cue thoughts of the lobster in the film ‘Love Actually’. Over the years, proud parents have overenthusiastically applauded comic chickens, grumpy sheep and for me, my personal favourite - a troop of Hawaiian hula hula girls. Whilst most parents would (secretly) love to see their ‘little Johnny/ Jennifer’ in the lead role, each year, casting for these parts causes many headaches for the teachers who have to make some difficult choices as the rehearsals commence - as not every child can be Mary/Jospeh! Whichever part your child is given this year, be sure to let them know that their job as a lobster/chicken/hula girl is an intrinsic part of the plot and without them, the show would simply not be worth watching. Whatever production your local school puts on this year, remember that the staff, children and assistants will have worked tirelessly for your benefit unusual costumes, forgotten lines and angelic voices et al. Talking of dodgy costumes and forgotten lines... When I mentioned to some local teachers that I was planning this piece, they (with the promise of total anonymity) came forward with the following ‘gems’: “We once had an Innkeeper who forgot his lines and said, on being asked if he had any room, “Sure, come in and have a beer”! “Last year in our infant nativity, we had Joseph needing the toilet just after Jesus had been born and had to halt proceedings until he returned. Perhaps the excitement was too much for him”! Another told me “ We had a ‘Wise Man’ who declared that “We bring thee gifts of Gold, Myrrh and Frankenstein”! And then there’s the one that really made us chuckle...“Every year we seem to have shepherds and angels who like to show the audience their pants. And one year we had an angel who pulled her tooth out and her white dress was streaked with blood - nobody knew where to look.”

You see, I am not sure that I’d like a nativity play where the audience couldn’t laugh at the mishaps. I have witnessed some very memorable and funny moments over the years and the children have loved the fact that the audience laugh when things go a little bit wrong as it stops them worrying about their mistakes. These mistakes are part of the experience too, so much so that hiccups - in glorious technicolour or otherwise might as well be written into the script. In any case, no self-respecting doting parent will have any idea of the plot anyway - their eyes are only ever fixed upon their little ‘cherub’. Whilst watching my little ones over the years - I am sure that the Baby Jesus could have appeared in person and I wouldn’t have noticed. Merry Christmas all.

Food tins, drinks cans and aerosols – are melted and turned into cans, fridges, and lots of other metal items. Clothing and textiles – are handsorted in the UK. They are sorted into different quality of materials, to ensure best re-use when distributed worldwide.

Garden and food waste – is composted locally to make a rich soil conditioner. This is used by farmers and soil blending companies in the UK. Paper and cardboard - paper and magazines are used to make new paper; cardboard is pulped to make new boxes and packaging.

A Christmas Welcome to the Tempestuous World of Wild Weather Ales! T

his Christmas we thought we’d turn our attention to one of the season’s most popular sports - Beer! So, we decided to step inside the doors of Wild Weather Ales, our local brewery (naturally, purely for editorial research purposes.)

A man walks into a bar. He pauses and runs his eye over the beer engine pump clips, his taste buds start to tingle in anticipation of a well earned pint. He orders his beer. He brings the glass to his mouth... He inhales the aroma and takes a deep draught of the beer …..It was okay… Beer drinkers - you’ve been there haven’t you? For the folks at Wild Weather Ales okay is just not good enough. Which is why they are on a mission - to save the world from mediocre beer. That is it. That is all. From humble beginnings with a single vat of beer (and with great vision from the Wild Weather’s owner Mike Tempest), the Silchester Brewery is now celebrating their second birthday, and has an incredible seven beers on tap at any one time, with their distinctive and colourful logo now proudly on display at many of the regions pubs and restaurants. “We’ve come a long way” explained Mike. “We are now open six days a week until 5 (noon on most Saturdays) and have an open door policy. We encourage our customers to pop by and call in to see the beer being made for themselves.”

Talking of bottles. With recycling close to all of our hearts, the team down at Wild Weather have come up with an ingenious solution to an excess of ‘chinking’ bottles in our green waste this Christmas too - Enter ‘The Growler’. What’s a Growler we hear you ask? Already popular in the USA, Growlers are refillable 2 litre swing top Wild Weather branded bottles perfect for storing fresh beer unopened for up to a GROWLER FILLED month. When your growler is empty (and we are sure WITH 5% BEER you will agree that this won’t be long...) Simply take £15 it back to the brewery to have it refilled with whatever beer you fancy. Simple. GROWLER Together with their web shop, there are now more ways than ever to get hold of their great beer, gift boxes, bottles, growlers and T-shirts. We think that Wild Weather can really help you to celebrate this season. HAVE A VERY HOPPY CHRISTMAS x

www.wildweatherales.com 0118 970 1837 enquiries@wildweatherales.com

During our visit, we were amazed at the process and the size of the huge vats used for brewing the beer. The whole process is fascinating - and for those who have always wondered how your beer is produced, you need look no further than their website or simply call in at the brewery. So, did the beer live up to its word? There was nothing mediocre about it. In fact, having sampled a number of Wild Weather ales at various local events and drinking establishments, we’d say that the Wild Weather team are doing a remarkable job of ‘Saving the world’ by supplying us locals with totally awesome cask and bottle conditioned ales.
