Are you in Marketing, Sales, HR, Communications or Events? With YouTube now the world’s second largest search engine, an increasing number of companies are using video in order to showcase their products and services more effectively in-house, on TV, at events and across the web. They are also using the power of visual communication to connect with stakeholders and staff. In an age when savvy companies are turning to high quality video, and reaching beyond a white sheet and a handycam®, modern production techniques can be surprisingly inexpensive without losing the ‘polish’. If you are looking for an affordable, high quality production company - with its own TV studio and location filming crews to bring your products and services to life - then Fleetwood Studios in Mortimer would love to work with you. We film on location and also have a modern 4K high-definition studio which includes a green screen, white infinity cove and full blackout facilities. If you already have a production partner, that’s fine too, as the studio can be dry-hired by them.

BEAT USA IN THE

Florida HEAT

Our Very Own Local, National & European Cheerleading Champions, CRIMSON HEAT ARE NOW OFFICIALLY USA CHAMPIONS TOO! It was smiles, flicks, tucks and jumps all round in the sun for Willinkbased Cheerleading team, Crimson Heat last month as 45 girls and their coaches descended on the beaches of Miami for a spot of outdoor training in preparation for the ‘Cheerleaders of America’ Nationals in Orlando. The trip was organised by Crimson’s coaches Gareth Green & Delphine Ayckbourn following the team’s win at the European Jamfest finals last summer. After a week of beach training, a memorable trip to the alligator infested Everglades, and the ESPN World of Sport Complex at Disney World, the team were then invited to spend two full days with the current World Champions, Top Gun at their Florida-based gym ahead of the competition. ns

This intensive training period paid off at the competition over the Easter weekend, when not only did the girls ‘place’, but went on to win it, making Crimson Heat the first ever non American team to compete and win in an American National Championship! “The athletes performance this weekend quite honestly was unbelievable” explained Coach Gareth. “The pressure on the shoulders of these girls was huge, and I am bursting with pride for each and every one of them”. Crimson, who are only in their fourth season, have already notched up an enviable silverwear collection with titles including National Champions and European Champions can now add ‘International Champions’ to the fold. Not a pom pom in sight, Cheerleading is fast becoming one of the most popular sports in the country. According to a recent study by the Department of Education, 37% of schools in the UK (four in ten) now offer Cheerleading as part of the physical education curriculum - though it has to be said, most do not compete at this level. As a high performance sport where teams work together to perform difficult sequences of stunts, tumbles, jumps, tosses, dance and motions, cheerleaders learn the art of self discipline, teamwork and all whilst getting uber-fit at the same time. The team’s Chairman, Gary Ayckbourn told us that the girls’ dedication to the team has been “admirable on every level”; and that the expectation for Crimson to create a world-class team now very much features in their future plans. “In order for us to prepare to compete on the world stage, there are several things we need to do, with the first being to secure a form of sponsorship. We are hoping that now we have National, European and International titles, we can attract the attention of a key brand - in the US, this is commonplace - and, with the growing popularity of the sport in the UK, we’d like to partner with a company who shares our global vision. From us all here at Village Eye (and we are sure, on behalf of our readers) Congratulations from us all ! If you would like to find out more about the team or would like to talk to them about sponsorship, please drop us a line and we’ll put you in touch [Ed].

Burghfield 11th May Fayre

SUNDAY

On Community

May

It’s nearing that time again – Sunday 11th May is the date of this year’s Burghfield May Fayre. This annual event held on the Hatch – the green triangle in Burghfield Village - is a welcome day out for all those residents of Burghfield and surrounding villages. The Hatch incidentally is where the drovers grazed their cattle overnight some 100 years ago, on their way to Reading market. It was gated at that time, hence the pub known as the Hatch Gate. The original idea behind the May Fayre was as a fun event for the villagers and their children. However it was soon realised, as stall holders applied to display and sell their goods, that here was an opportunity to raise money for the benefit of local charities. Today the Burghfield May Fayre attracts over 50 stall holders with a variety of offerings from home made cakes and marmalades to lessons in embroidery. There is a coconut shy, ferret racing, tombolas and much more. The local schools and associations such as the scouts, guides and air cadets also add their own individual contributions to the day. Satisfy your taste buds with the ever popular Hog Roast and BBQ. Burghfield Spices will be offering their delicious curryies, and we are hoping, this year, to have a pizza stand as well. These delicacies can be complemented by locally produced beers and ciders available from the beer tent and from the wine bar a selection of red, white and rosé wines - or enjoy a glass (or a jug) with friends, of the ever popular Pimms. Tea and coffee is available in the main marquee together with a plentiful selection of cakes, pastries and cheeses. For the children, and the mums and dads, the ice cream van will be there, offering a selection of ice cream and lollies. Throughout the day there will be plenty to see and take part in. You can parade your pet at the ever popular Dog Show, take the youngsters on the ‘merry go round’ - and this year we are hoping to have go karting nearby for the ‘almost adults’. Check in your programme (available on the day) and see what is going on in the arena.

Happy 100th Birthday Brownies! It was party time in the area last month when over 55 brownies and their leaders got together to celebrate the Brownies centenary year (known as the Big Brownie Birthday), from local groups in the local Warennes Wood District, which include; 2nd Burghfield Brownies, 3rd Burghfield Brownies, 1st Mortimer Brownies and 1st Aldermaston Brownies held a party at St Mary’s School Burghfield. During the event, the girls all passed round a special torch that is working its way to all Brownie groups in Berkshire; This was followed by lots of arts & crafts and party games and a eating huge birthday cake!

R

ecent news of plans to build 30,000 homes adjacent to Burghfield Common has certainly got local residents talking. Reading-based property advisers Campbell Gordon has indeed announced a proposal to build the new homes over the next 20 years on up to 6,000 acres of countryside south of Calcot and north of Burghfield Common. These ambitious development plans form the company’s entry for the prestigious Wolfson Economic Prize, which calls for garden cities that are “visionary, viable and popular” as a reaction to the national housing crisis, which continues to see property prices rising and becoming increasingly out of reach for first time buyers. Reading West Labour prospective parliamentary candidate Victoria Groulef who objects to the plans says, “The Wolfson Economic Prize follows from George Osborne’s announcement about a new garden city at Ebbsfleet in Kent, and the risk is that if this scheme were to win the Wolfson Economic Prize or even be highly commended that might give it a momentum that would override local planning processes.” Homes in the Reading Borough are already 40% more expensive than the national average. Ian Campbell, a local surveyor and partner at Campbell Gordon, centres his solution on a ‘garden city’, which is designed to house 100,000 people. This development, known as the New Reading Extension (NRE) would provide a long-term solution to the town’s housing needs. Most of the new housing according to Campbell Gordon would be south of the M4 linked to a smaller area of housing north of the motorway in the vicinity of the existing motorway service area - instead of building on the flood plain, the Kennet Meadows and lake areas close to the M4 would become a new public park twice as large as London's Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens put together.

4

There would also be a state of the art transport interchange with fast rail connections to central Reading, London and Heathrow too. John Ennis, Southcote Councillor says “I strongly resent the fact that this Reading-based developer is trying to obtain political support from within Government without publishing any proper plans and without any attempt to discuss this massive scheme with Reading or the other councils affected.” The land has already been the subject of two failed housing bids – the latest for 7,500 new homes in 2008 and 7,500-home development dubbed Kennet Valley Park, which fell through in 2010. Southcote councillor John Ennis said: “As we saw again only a few weeks ago the whole area between Reading and the M4 floods in heavy rain, which makes it all flood plain in my book, and building there is likely to put not only Southcote but also central Reading at risk. Borough planning boss Cllr Pete Ruhemann claims it was only because that development did not go ahead that the Oracle did not flood this year. He added: “As we have seen this winter, preserving the Kennet Meadows is vital to protecting the communities of Southcote, Coley and Calcot and Reading town centre from serious flood risks – a view endorsed by the Environment Agency. But Mr Campbell says unlike those proposals, his plan does not involve building any homes on the floodplain, the extent of which is defined by the Environment Agency. Campbell Gordon recognise that people in Calcot, Southcote and Burghfield Common will have concerns about increased traffic and disruption caused by the lengthy building programme and the submission accepts there will be further pressure on the

Burghfield Road, which also means more traffic on the Bath Road (A4). A petition opposing plans to build the 30,000 homes was launched in April this year with protesters aiming to convince the judges that the proposal is not popular. The petition can be signed at www. bestforreadingwest.co.uk Mr Campbell of Campbell Gordon admits the plans will be controversial and adds that they could only become a reality if the Government set up a statutory authority made up of representatives from the public, private and community sectors with the legal powers over land purchase and planning control. To give you an idea of the scale of this project, we’ve looked at other town and housing numbers and discovered that Bracknell, for instance, is made up of around 30,000 homes, Maidenhead has about 29,000 and Wokingham fewer homes at around 21,000. In terms of the size of this development, another of Campbell Gordon’s projects, Green Park near junction 11 is built on approximately 180 acres of land. The proposal for the NRE spans some 6000 acres - that’s the equivalent of 33 Green Parks put together! For Wolfson’s full press release, visit www.campbellgordon.co.uk What do you think about the plans? A welcome release on the housing ‘pressure-cooker’ or a development too far on local countryside? Whatever you view, we shall keep you abreast of progress as we’re made aware of it, and will be reporting the information in an impartial way. Watch this space!

is available to pre-order for £59 (plus £6 international shipping), while the actual service itself will set you back £3 each month. And these GPS trackers aren’t just for young children either... Older Children As our children grow up, they may ask to go to the park with friends or walk to and from school without you. Some children are prone to wandering off or hiding, particularly those with special needs. GPS tracking devices are now more sophisticated, with features like a panic button and the ability to talk to parents.

Watch your Tot

Teenagers & Young adults You really need to be on your toes to keep up with a teenager. A GPS Tracker can be placed in your car to monitor locations, routes and even speeds travelled. Or your child may want to carry one for their own security.

Losing sight of your child is a parent’s worst nightmare. Words can’t begin to describe the fear and worry you feel. Many parents are now giving children - some as young as five! - a mobile phone to be able to phone home or check in when you can’t be there. But now, technology has moved on another step with a number of ‘smartwatches’ coming on to the market and potentially giving peace of mind to worried parents.

The Elderly It’s been an emotive subject for discussion, but GPS tracking units are already being widely used to help locate confused or lost senior citizens. With illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia on the increase, the elderly population is vulnerable.

One of these is the HereO GPS watch. The watch lets parents know exactly where their child is at any moment, all thanks to the built-in GPS chip, plus a handy iPhone app that can pinpoint exactly where that specific watch is. There’s a range of features that are all designed to give you peace of mind when you’re not with your child. Not only can you check up on their location with the app, but you’ll also receive notifications when your child enters or leaves frequently visited places, such as school or home. There’s also a panic alert that will alert all family members using the app – and a tamper alert will also be sent if the watch is removed.

Would you want a GPS watch to keep tabs on your kids? Or is it one step too far? We’d love to hear your comments.

With an Android version of the app and a web-based HTML5 version set to be available around June, it should run on any tablet, BlackBerry or Windows Phone too. The watch

Step 2: Using a regular eyebrow pencil, the shape is measured and created. Once the client is satisfied with the desired effect, the pigment is then trailed on their skin to determine the most suitable colour tone for them.

Are you looking for freedom from makeup? Semi-permanent makeup can give you the freedom to look your best at anytime. You can transition immediately from work to an evening out without having to be a slave to the mirror for touch ups; just a quick powder and you’re out the door. Semi-permanent makeup looks more natural than any topical application of makeup as the pigments become a part of your skin and don’t smear or smudge. It’s an investment that is worthy when done by the right professional... where the results are natural-looking and provide a prettier you.

“As you can see from the photos on the left - when someone has very little eyebrow hair we can enhance with hair like strokes explains Sue from Puro , a special semi-permanent make artist in Mortimer. The eyebrows, eyeliner and lips are all measured and drawn so that no mistakes can be made. All treatment prices include two individual treatments. This is because following the first treatment, and in response to the body’s own regeneration, clients can expect to lose at least 40% (for eyebrows and up to 70% for lip treatments) of the initally applied colour. During the second treatment, often referred to as a ‘control treatment’ the degree of colour loss will be assessed and, if you wish to make any minor adjustments to the colour or shape, this can be done. So if you are someone who has lost their eyebrows through over plucking or have had an illness that has affected your eyebrows or you are someone who just wishes to have more definition in their lips, then look no further. Sue is also offering eyeliner to give more definition to both top and bottom lashes. Prices start from £275.00 To see a selection of before and after pictures of the different treatments carried out by Sue, visit facebook.com/purohealthandbeauty

n recent years we have become used to the Budget offering little in the way of significant change. However this year the Chancellor surprised many through his sweeping changes to pensions. This has certainly grabbed the headlines and there are undoubtedly some great opportunities for those saving towards their retirement. It is good news for us too as a business, but whether Mr Osborne has gone too far with ‘pension liberation’ will perhaps take many years to establish. Beware those who act on the headlines only. There is always the small print; important facts that didn’t make the headlines. From the perspective of pension savers, being able to withdraw unlimited sums from your pension fund at the age of 55 seems attractive. There are however some warnings:Withdrawals in excess of 25% of the pension fund (which can be taken as tax free cash) will be added to your income for that year and taxed accordingly. About 80% of the enquiries we receive seem to miss the fact that taking all the pension fund in one go would probably result in them being a higher rate tax payer in that year. Pensions are a vehicle to save money in a tax efficient environment in order to create an income for the rest of your life.

Recent surveys show that most people drastically underestimate the fund of money that they will need in retirement. This is, after all, a complex calculation that needs estimations of longevity, income needed in retirement, inflation, investment growth and investment charges to be taken into account. Most people just don’t have this information to hand, so we do have a concern that those who do not work this out or seek advice run the risk of running out of money. Although the Government has set aside money for the provision of ‘guidance’, we do not think that it is enough and do remember that ‘guidance’ is not advice. The positives are that there are some great planning opportunities. For example; the prospect for higher rate tax payers receiving 40% (or more) tax relief on contributions yet possibly only paying 20% tax in retirement. Despite negativity around annuities, we feel that there is still a place for them as they create the certainty of a guaranteed regular income for the rest of your life. We believe annuity rates will become more competitive and will continue to play an important role in retirement planning. So having greater control of your finances in retirement is a welcomed development, but don’t spend it all at once!

OPEN DAY SATURDAY 17th MAY!

Celebrates

its1st birthday! Village Eye would like to wish Digifocus Photographic Studio in Mortimer a very Happy 1st birthday! The brainchild of Jack Chen, a highly experienced and award winning photographer, the Digifocus studio has been proving to be very popular since opening its doors last May; providing a high quality photographic service for both consumer and commercial customers. We popped in to see Jack this week to see how things have been going. “The response has been great since I opened my studio” he explained. “During the year, I have produced lots of great photography and memories for the local customers with some coming from further field. Most important of all, I have made some great friends along the way. People in the area are really friendly and very encouraging about the business.” The Victoria Road based studio is a dedicated portrait studio for family and pets portraits, with infinity backdrops and some carefully selected props, which lend themselves beautifully to the production of clean, modern and contemporary family portraits (the kind you might see from a certain large national chain). Testament to this can be found on his clean, bright website where there are many, many images available to view from shoots which have taken place in the studio over the past year. With portrait shoots starting at £39 including a 6x4 print in an acrylic frame, clients can also opt to purchase the image slideshow from the session for just £25. These include medium resolution images for their own websites or to share with friends and family on facebook etc. “It’s a safe and fun environment where you’ll enjoy your photo session with me and I can make beautiful and elegant images with artistic flair. There is also a viewing area where customers can view their slideshow and select their images on a large flat screen TV”. The past year has seen some new services added to the studio too, including photo restoring, where Jack uses his expertise and experience in digital manipulation to transform, repair and restore photographs... But the most recent edition is a make up area, which is a purposely devised area for the bespoke makeover photography he has recently introduced. Teaming up with Gini Blesky from TrulyColours, they are now offering the ultimate in photographic packages... A Makeover Studio Shoot “Gini from TrulyColours and I have put our expertise and experience together to bring you a fantastic makeover photo shoot” explained Jack. “Gini, who has

over 15 years of experience in the professional make-up and styling industry really knows her stuff, and together, we aim to give our clients a unique makeover experience, tailoring every aspect of the photo shoot just for them”. The package starts at £199 for 1-2 persons (limited offer for only £99) with each session lasting for one and half hours, including professional make-up, hairstyling and change of outfit. Photography in different lighting styles and backdrops, with or without props; bring your favourite shoes, handbags or even musical instruments and show us your personality. It will be like having your own image consultant who will take care of every aspect of the shoot. The package comes with a bespoke folio style frame containing a set of three printed images and two medium resolution digital image files for website use. This makeover experience also includes Champagne Cocktails and chocolates! Group sessions with up to 5 people are available too. Win a Makeover! To celebrate their first birthday, Digifocus are running a competition for one lucky reader to win one of these Makeover sessions. The prize includes a full makeover package worth £199 and will be for a maximum of two people. If you’d like to inject a touch of glamour into your life - now is your chance! See below for entry details. Free Photography Sessions at Their Open Day! On Saturday May 17th, the Digifocus Studio will be holding an Open Day and you are all invited! From 10am-5pm, Jack will be offering an open-house studio with free photography sessions all day. Any pictures taken on the day will be available to purchase at a special discounted rate. No booking is necessary, just turn up!

Paul Spratley THE

(of Spratley’s of Mortimer) guide to buying a used car

E

ach year in the spring and autumn when new car registrations become available, many people part-exchange their car for a new one. This causes an over supply which often drives used car prices down making the following months the perfect time to consider buying a new (new to you) vehicle. Whilst there are many who still choose to purchase a brand new car to ensure they receive the most upto-date registration plate, an increasing number of savvy buyers are opting for previously registered or pre-owned vehicles saving themselves considerable sums of money in these purseclinching times.

Q. Paul, Why should I buy a used vehicle instead of a brand new one? [smiling] “By purchasing a vehicle that is say 6-12 months old, you could save yourself £1000s. With a brand new vehicle, the moment you drive away from the forecourt you could, in some instances wipe off up to 30% of the new price from its value. This is not least due to the VAT which is levied against all brand new vehicles.” Q. I do most of my shopping on-line these days - should I consider buying a car on the internet too? “The internet is a great place to start researching the type of vehicle which might suit you. If you consider that buying a car is something which will be an integral part of your life for some time, just like buying a new house, it needs to be seen (and test driven) first to ensure it suits your needs. Would you buy a house on-line without seeing it first?”

We spent some time with Paul Spratley over at Spratley’s of Mortimer, a fifth generation family company who have been expertly supplying the good people of RG7 (and beyond) with cars and light vans (mostly Vauxhalls) for many years.

Q. What about buying from a dealer? “When you buy from a reputable dealer you have statutory rights which means you have total peace of mind and ‘comeback’ if needs be.

Paul is the fourth generation of the Spratley family, based at their Mortimer site since their humble beginnings as a bicycle repair shop over 100 years ago. The team have recently celebrated their 50th anniversary of affiliation with Vauxhall.

At Spratley’s we treat all of our customers with the respect and importance they deserve. We spend time sitting down (usually over a cup of tea or coffee) with you to discuss your requirements at length. Then, unusually for a car dealership and based on trust, we do not ask for a deposit to source a used vehicle for you. We would never expect a customer to commit to any purchase before they have had the opportunity to see it and take it for a test drive first. Then, if we have done our job correctly and the car is right for you, you can choose whether to make the purchase.”

The secret ingredient to this longevity recipe is most likely an ample helping of their refreshingly different ‘no pressure, honestapproach’ ethos and a generous sprinkling of good old-fashioned, courteous service (always served with a smile). 14

So who better to ask for advice about buying a used car during the coming months...

Main picture: The Vauxhall Mokka, used price from £15,500 inc vat. Inset, the Mokka’s award winning interior.

Q. If I decide to buy privately, what should I look out for? “Firstly, there are many cars to choose from both on-line and in print from the private sector. Make sure that you know who the seller is. Trust your instincts - if you are turning up to a private sale and the person wants to meet you at a location other than their address - ask yourself why? If it appears to be too good to be true - then you can answer this sentence for yourself...” As an established dealer, reputation is everything. At Spratley’s, they are especially proud of their customer service record. “Every customer is invited to provide written feedback” explains Paul. “By doing this, we can ensure that the service we provide to our customers continues to be second to none”. Village Eye were given free range to ‘inspect’ the customer feedback forms they’ve received recently and thought we’d share some of the comments with you... “I have always had excellent service from all at Spratley’s. Everybody is always friendly & helpful. Paul is always prepared to help and put himself out to assist & help where possible. Despite now living a significant way away from Mortimer I will always use Spratley’s as I trust them.” 10 April 2014 “Very pleased with our purchase and the level of attention and help that we received. The word professionalism was created for Paul Spratley. Richard in service reception always helpful.” 28 March 2014 “We have been dealing with Spratley’s for over 25 years always had excellent service with no complaints. I guess that’s hard to improve on.” 9 April 2014

Paul’s top tips Test Drive This can be a ‘sticky’ area for private sellers due to insurance coverage however it is essential that you do actually drive the car that you’re considering buying so that you get a good “feel” for it. You will need to ensure that you can find a comfortable driving position also checking for any potential visual blind spots, e.g do the roof pillars obstruct your view? A test drive may also reveal any other issues with the vehicle such as unusual engine and other noises.

eye

Spare Key This is a very important point and On Motoring! often overlooked by buyers in their excitement to drive away in their newly acquired vehicle - but if there is no spare key you should try to find out why and very importantly ask yourself where that key is - are you happy to have a car knowing that someone else out there may have the spare?

Sales Open Event

On Friday 16th & Saturday 17th May, Spratley’s will be throwing their doors open even wider than usual to host their annual Open Event. This year, the Mortimer-based dealership will be displaying Vauxhall’s Mokka SUV which joins an elite group of cars by winning a 100% score for its safety assist technology and the maximum five stars overall in an independent assessment by consumer organisation Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme). Other cars on display will include Vauxhall’s Corsa, Astra and the popular Meriva, a midsized family car which is packed with innovative thinking aimed at making life easier, more comfortable and more convenient. “Please do come and join us!” says Paul. You can also view their great range of used cars at www.spratleys.co.uk or contact Paul or Wendy at sales@spratleys.co.uk or phone 0118 933 2338.

The New Vauxhall Meriva... The Vauxhall Meriva

Always check that the vehicle has a full service history. This is especially important if the vehicle has an extended warranty period. Warranties are not usually given when buying privately but may be purchased independently. Reputable car dealers will almost always provide a warranty period. HPI Check Before parting with your money, it is worth carrying out a check to discover whether the car has been the subject of an insurance write-off, stolen, or if there is outstanding finance. There are websites which charge a small fee for checking vehicle credentials. Buyer Beware Remember - ‘Sold as Seen’. Always ask to see the registration document/log book (V5C), MOT certificate if applicable, service book and operator manuals. The MOT certificate now displays the recorded mileage of the previous three MOT tests where relevant which gives a good indication of whether the mileage is genuine.

Thinking of extending? If you are tight for space but are not yet ready to move, perhaps you have found yourself wondering if there is anything you can do to increase the current living space in your existing home... There are a number of areas within a house that can be successfully extended or converted to provide useful extra living space without having to build out into your garden either. LOFT CONVERSION Most houses with a reasonable roof pitch can accommodate additional space in the roof. Older houses (pre-1970), will have traditional rafter and purlin roof construction and so the space is already there to adapt. Newer houses (1970s onwards), tend to have roof truss construction and so a few structural alterations will need to be made. Additional bedroom and bathroom accommodation can be added in the roof-space with the creation of an extended staircase. Dormer window or roof-lights can be built-in to the roof envelope for natural lighting. OVER GARAGE EXTENSION Another method of increasing the floor space of your home without having to build out over the garden is to build over an existing garage. Attached garages are a valuable asset to any property, additional bedrooms can be added without the inconvenience of having to add a staircase as you would with a loft

conversion. The other benefit of building over a garage is that there are no costly foundations/excavation work to be carried out. GARAGE CONVERSION Any attached garage can be easily converted into additional accommodation. An additional living room, study or an extension to an existing living room or kitchen. Most home owners do not use their garages for their cars and so this option can be very sensible. EXTENDING OVER PERIMETER/ BOUNDARY STRIPS OF LAND Most homes have a thin strip of land between the house and the boundary fence. This strip may only be around 1 to 1.5 metres wide and is considered by most homeowners to be of no use. In many cases it is possible to build over this strip of land, right up to the boundary, at ground floor level. This in conjunction with some minor internal reconfiguration can drastically improve internal space. So as you can see there are a variety of ways of extending your property and altering you building plans without having to build out over your existing garden space. Naturally, we’d advise that you investigate what planning permissions might be required for your extension before starting any work! Further information and advice can be found at www.westberks.gov.uk

Homes & Gardens

Clean Your Chimney. After the cold winter and warm fires, have a professional chimney sweep clean and inspect your active or decorative chimney. Professionals should also check the chimney flue and cap for cracks or leaking. Install a chimney cap to prevent water damage, to keep animals from nesting and to keep debris from blocking the chimney and causing carbon monoxide to flow into the house. Check The Gutters. Leaves and debris from the roof can fill up gutters so they no longer do their job of channelling the rainwater that falls on your roof away from your walls. Remove whatever has accumulated in there so the water can flow freely once again. Make sure, too, that gutters aren’t sagging. If they are, inspect the brackets and make any repairs. Visit The Loft. From your loft space, you’ll be able to make a second check on the state of the roof. Look out for any watermarks on roof timbers, and any daylight showing through from above. Again, be safe and call in a professional unless you are entirely confident of your skills when it comes to roof repairs. Look Out For Cracks. Have you noticed any cracks that have formed recently? Small cracks can be easily filled and decorated over - more serious cracks (those that are wider than 3mm, keep reappearing or are also on the exterior walls) will need professional attention - and could be a sign of subsidence.

Can You See Through Your Windows? You have opened your blinds to let in the spring sunshine only to discover that your view is blurred by a misty film coating your windows which has gathered there over the winter months... Give them a clean, it is amazing how much extra light comes in! Has Your House Been Invaded? Have some unwelcome guests found sanctuary in your home? Whether you’re being invaded by mice, rats or bees and wasps, you should act quickly to banish them before the infestation takes hold. How Does Your Garden Grow? Inspect trees for broken branches. If the limb is high up, hire a professional. Inspect for roots poking through the soil, a possible sign that the tree is starting to list. If you had heavy snowfall in winter, look for bending branches. Make a mental note and check that they bounce back and produce leaves in the spring. Prune the roses, tidy borders and sweep and remove any leaf and tree debris. Make Sure You’re Safe. Take care of your smoke detector by gently vacuuming inside with the soft brush attachment and checking and changing the battery as necessary. Check out your carbon monoxide detector, too, following manufacturer’s instructions. And remember that even though it seems to be working fully, just like a car, your boiler needs an annual service.

SPRING FRESH CLEAN The winter takes its toll on your home and garden, so spring is a good time to do a little inspection. Use our list all year round to ensure you’ve got it all covered, and save yourself expensive repair bills later on.

SPORTS WEEK 2014 Saturday 17th - Friday 23rd MAY Following the great success of last year’s Mortimer Sports Weekend, the organisers are pleased to announce that this year the weekend just wasn’t long enough and have extended the usual two day event to a whole week of fantastic sports and activity taster sessions! From Saturday 17th to Friday 23rd May, sports clubs and organisations from Mortimer, Shinfield, Burghfield, Theale and the surrounding areas will be offering a range of taster sessions, lessons and open days to encourage as many people as possible to try something new and have fun. Whilst it’s fair to say that the majority of events will be taking place at the weekend, further sessions and activities will be available during the week too. Whatever your age or ability, there is something for you.  Whether you are looking for something to keep you fit, to meet new people, to keep the kids active or for a shot of adrenaline, you’ll find a huge selection of sports and activities to try.  All equipment and training will be provided and most are FREE or at a reduced price. What do I need to do? To take part, Passports cost £1 each and are available from: Budgens, Mortimer Mortimer Post Office Dad’s Shop, Mortimer The Willink Leisure Centre, Burghfield This Passport lists all the activities, times, locations and booking details so that you can plan a fun-filled weekend. Apart from having a great time and getting fitter, if you try a number of activities over the two days, you may qualify for a medal.  Each time you take part, ask the activity organiser to stamp your passport.  At the end of the weekend, add up the number of stamps you’ve received and see if you have earned a gold, silver or bronze medal.  Instructions on how to qualify for a medal are on the Passports. Named medals will be awarded at the Mortimer Fun Day on 6th July.

Megan’s Moments

Summer Holidays for Teens by Megan Curtis Exams will soon be over and what better way to spend your free time than going on a summer holiday with your boyfriend/girlfriend or friends somewhere hot, warm and sunny? But obviously, everyone is different, some may want to go clubbing, some will want to walk around the local town and some may want to relax on a beach all day! Firstly, for those who are clubbing-mad what better way to spend your holiday than in Kavos in Corfu? This self-catering holiday including flights is just £174 per person, departing on the 8th September for a week, staying at a 3 star hotel called ‘Quayside Village’. Not only is this hotel just 20 metres from the beach and nightlife but it also includes facilities such as a bar, snack bar, games room, gym, football pitch, motorised watersports and live DJs. For more information go to ‘Club 18-30’ section on Thomas Cook’s website http://www.thomascook.com or search for the latest deals and offers for a clubbing holiday. Or maybe you and your friends fancy somewhere a bit different? Well how about Tunisia? Through Thomas Cook for just £300 per person, you and three others could be jetting off to the 3 star Hotel Golf Residence in Port El Kantaoui. Departing from Stansted airport on the 2nd of July for a week you’ll be just 800 metres from the hotel’s own private sandy beach as well as the hotel having two pools, a mini-market, free Wi-Fi, a buffet restaurant, a la carte restaurant, American bar, lounge bar, beach bar and a pool snack bar. For more details about the latest offers visit Thomas Cook’s website. Perhaps your budget is a bit higher and you fancy somewhere a bit more luxurious? Personally, I feel that spending an extra £100 for an all inclusive holiday is great value for money because you get all of your snacks, drinks and meals included in the price. When booking through Thomson online for just £485 per person (based on four adults) you could stay at the 4 star all inclusive Tropical hotel in Dalaman, Turkey. I think this hotel looks AMAZING, it has four swimming pools and an array of waterslides as well as four restaurants and a pancake house – perfect! For more information go to www.thomson.co.uk 23

Congratulations to reader Andrea Madigan, our L’Ortolan competition winner. Andrea from Three Mile Cross was drawn at random from our many entries (in fact, this competition was our most popular to date!) Enjoying a late Valentine’s meal with her husband Michael at the Michelin starred restaurant, Andrea told us “It is still sinking in but wow - what a night! My husband has been very unwell, having spent the past six months in hospital. We have a very busy household usually surrounded by four young children so time to ourselves is rarity! This coupled with Michael's illness, this prize could not have come at a better time, a very sincere thank you!

When I had my own children, one of the things I was looking forward to was taking them to such gatherings. I guess that every parent does because it reminds them of their own childhood? So when my son was invited to his very first party at the age of two (actually, so as not to upset anyone every child at his nursery had been invited), I couldn’t wait.

BBQ and drinks of Veuve Cliquot ‘a’ plenty – at this point, I must confess to rather liking Freds party. The only question I had was: Were Freds parents pulling out all the stops because they were rich and had lost the meaning of money, or were they simply trying to impress the adults? I don’t know how much it all cost but I would guess at quite a few thousand. The look on another mums face was mirrored my own and we both vowed there and then never to try and compete - AT ALL. Rather the opposite, I have learned now that the most precious thing you can give your children are the memories of your time with them rather than what they have been bought.

We arrived on a warm Saturday afternoon at

centre. But the one thing we have always done is to stick to waxing a realistic budget. As the Intimate available children have grown, their wants and needs have changed too and they now realise that for some parties and activities the entire class might not necessarily get to go.

Feel radiant this Spring... My eyes were about to be well and truly opened... When the door swung open we were greeted by an over-enthusiastic smileyfaced clown [think - drama student earning money in their holidays] who ushered us into the throng. At the back of the garden were (and I’m not joking), donkey rides, a bouncy castle and a magician. When the magician finished out came Punch and Judy – I say out came, he was already installed in a marquee that had been erected along with a balloon modeller and the kids disco. I couldn’t help wondering if perhaps I had been teleported into a children’s entertainers’ convention?

Burrito Delivery New Mexican Food Delivery Service in RG7!

Volkswagen UP! VS Hyundai i10 Hi, I’m Jack Worboys, young driver and car lover! In the coming months, I’ll be test driving vehicles of all shapes and sizes to give you my opinion of what’s hot, and what’s not in the motoring world... In this, my first review i’ve started small, having test driven two of the most popular city cars on the market - the Volkswagen Up! and the Hyundai i10. Sales of Hyundai’s original i10 exploded under the scrappage scheme of 2009, but now increased competition means Hyundai needed a new i10 to match the opposition. And here we are. The Hyundai starts at £8,345 and the VW at £8,640 for the five door option. The extra £295 feels well spent inside the stylish UP!. The dash in the i10 is not ugly, but not exciting either. Both cars feel spacious, the VW feels more sporty and a little roomier, but both seats hold you well in the corners. Hyundai doesn’t offer a touch screen, unlike VW, although one wasn’t available to test. Both standard radios work well, but the UP! has better bass response. The UP! can feel pretty sluggish whereas the 1.2 litre engine option in the i10 is much more capable, although both cars feel nippy at low speeds. The i10 feels more refined, making a long drive more relaxing. The UP! grips excellently, whereas the i10 is more supple, soaking up bumps very well, but doesn’t handle as confidently. The great steering cements the VW as a driver’s car. In contrast the i10 is most comfortable at a cruise.

Thursday & Friday nights, within 3 miles of Burghfield

El Gordo, or "The Fat One"

The gearbox in the VW has the edge, the clutch in the i10 is heavier, which some may find difficult to use in stop start traffic, but the brake pedal has better feel. The UP! is slightly more economical, but only just. You can get tax free engines in both cars. As for depreciation, the desirable little VW will be worth more than the more generic Hyundai a few years from now. The VW UP! manages to stand out which will appeal to a younger audience, and also should definitely be high on your list if you’re a keen driver. However, the new i10 is refined, rides well, costs slightly less and is more practical, making it the winner of this test.

I’d especially like to thank Ridgeway Volkswagen Reading and WLMG Hyundai Reading for providing the cars to test. Until next time...

What’s On

FOX FEST SATURDAY 7th JUNE MIDDAY UNTIL 11PM

If you are starting to fill your social diary for the summer months - we have an event for you to add. On Saturday June 7th, the Fox & Hounds, Theale are holding their third Fox Fest Music Festival! The first event which was held back in 2012 was a ‘dip your toe (or whole foot as it turned out) into the water’ to see if the residents of the area would support such an ambitious attempt to put on a full scale one day music festival - and they did, with bells on. “People thought we were mad” says Fox & Hounds Manager, Daryl. “We are quite well known for our entertainment and tribute nights throughout the year, but we wanted to create an event which surpassed everyone’s expectations - an event which could be enjoyed by people of all ages.” “People just ‘got it’ and turned up in droves. We had a real mix of people and ages with varying music tastes and when we ran the second event last year, we were delighted to see so many returning faces in addition to the many more who’d joined us for a day of fun in the sun. Everyone who came said they’d definitely come again if we went for a third, so here we are!” This year’s event will see seven bands playing through the day from midday with headlining acts Boot Led Zepplin and Kings Ov Leon in the evening. We’ll be serving a wide selection of world street food throughout the event which can be washed down with a pint of Scrumpy as we are also combining the event with our annual scrumpy festival! Tickets for the event are on sale now either by scanning the link here or by calling the ticket hotline on 0118 930 2295 Adults £20 a ticket Under 16’s £10 Village Eye Family Ticket (two Adults, two Children) £50

Kings Ov Leon have been rocking out the most prestigious theatres, festivals and music venues since the start of 2009 with their undeniably breathtaking show! The scale, energy and charisma of their performances leaving audiences across Europe sure they’ve seen the Kings Of Leon themselves! The Kings_Ov_Leon take you on an absolutely epic, exhilarating journey playing your favourite KOL tracks from the first release “The Holy Roller Novocaine” through to the incredible number one album “Come Around Sundown”, all with unprecedented accuracy !

Boot Led Zeppelin are internationally recognised as the ultimate tribute to Led Zeppelin. The band tour most of the UK from theatres and festivals to the most legendary of music venues. Boot-Led-Zeppelin capture the magic and excitement of Led Zeppelin’s legendary concerts . Their close attention to detail, and sheer presence and energy on stage, ensure to take their audience on a journey back in time, delivering the ultimate Led Zeppelin experience!

RUNNING, WALKING AND AMBLING FOR THE RESPONDERS RAISES OVER £2K Whilst donations are still coming in, the organisers of the first ever Wokefield Park Charity Fun Run in aid of the Burghfield & Mortimer Community First Responders, tell us that so far, they’ve raised over £2000 for the local scheme. One of the event’s organisers, Andy Macaskill told us “We’re delighted to have helped raise so much money for the Burghfield & Mortimer First Responders through the fun run most importantly, everybody who took part had a great time. We are so pleased that so many local people came along to support the event and this brilliant cause. We look forward to a bigger and better event next year”. With over 300 runners, walkers and fancy dress-clad ‘amblers’ taking part, the event which took them though farms, across

fields and through local woodland was all over by lunchtime just in time to pop to the local eatery for a well deserved roast. Congratulations go to Tom Adams and Alix Eyles, who were both first past the finishing line in the five mile race and also to Oliver Moor and Holly Raynor who were the first boy and girl to complete the 1 mile course. We’d also like to give a special mention to local Responder “Jacko” who not only raised a significant sum towards the final total on the day but ran the entire 5 miler with his Responders back pack on! (FYI, the pack weighs about 10kg, that’s a whopping 22lbs) Well done Jacko!
