REDEFINING SPORTS REHAB As part of the recently announced collaboration with IMG, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is now operating IMG Academy's Physical Therapy clinic. Specialists from the Hospital provide expertise in orthopedic and rehabilitative care and work with IMG Academy coaches and trainers to help get our athletes back to their game as quickly and safely as possible and protect them from future injuries. HSS specialists will also provide services to the thousands of youth, collegiate, professional and adult athletes who travel to the campus annually to train or compete. One of HSS’s first initiatives is to work with the more than two dozen athletes who are readying for the NFL Combine at the Academy. The new IMG Academy-based HSS Physical Therapy Team, consisting of Jorge Giral, DPT,

COMT, CSCS, clinical supervisor, and Matt Morgan, P.T., ATC, advanced clinician, joined HSS Clinical Specialist Peter Draovitch, P.T., ATC, to provide thorough musculoskeletal and functional assessments of these elite athletes. The objective analyses form the foundation of the players’ training program by identifying key areas of weakness and potential injury that need to be addressed during their six week stay. The HSS PT team then interfaces with a world-class multidisciplinary team of athletic trainers, strength and speed training specialists, position coaches and many others to come up with the most effective success plan for these athletes. The NFL Combine Training program is one of many at IMG Academy that highlights the importance of the new collaboration. HSS is a world leader in Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. As a premier medical destination for professional and elite athletes, HSS is the Official Hospital for sports teams such as the NY Giants, NY Knicks, NY Mets, NY Liberty and NY Red Bulls, and its physicians provide orthopedic care for the Brooklyn Nets as well as several college teams. In 2013, HSS, whose physicians and physical therapists have served U.S. Olympic athletes and hopefuls for USA Swimming, USA Volleyball, and USRowing, was designated the first National Medical Center of

the US Olympic Committee’s National Medical Network. HSS has extensive experience with young athletes, which is critical for care delivery to our student-athletes. All training and services provided at the new IMG Academy Physical Therapy Facility are closely coordinated with the HSS Sports Rehabilitation & Performance Center in New York. Rob DiGiacomo, P.T., DPT, ATC, director of the Center, is overseeing the HSS Rehab operations at IMG Academy.

Student-athletes also took time out to keep our highways clean.

Student-athletes also showed how opportunistic they are with their philanthropy. During a roadtrip in New Hampshire, the Post-graduate basketball program’s games were cancelled amid severe winter weather. Rather than rest, the team noticed that Make-A-Wish New Hampshire was at their hotel and working short-handed to prepare for their annual holiday party. The team took initiative and helped make the party a success, endearing the children in attendance with memories for a lifetime.

Student-athletes worked with the Special Olympics of Manatee County by hosting basketball and flag football practices. They helped advanced the mission of Face Autism by working with children in the program through art classes, LEGO building sessions and trips to the roller skating rink. They collected toys and food for local organizations like the Manatee County Food Bank and the Salvation Army. They led IMPACT Mentoring sessions at Bayshore High School and made the effort to keep local roadways litter-free with Keep Manatee County Beautiful.

After overcoming a life-altering diagnosis, Leibbrandt returned to the game she loves, and now is in pursuit of career in helping children in need.

Kat Leibbrandt (Soccer, 20062009) above (left) and below

Between the 2011 and 2012 soccer seasons, IMG Academy alumna Kat Leibbrandt, a member of the Class of 2009, was diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening disorder - myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease that causes muscle weakness and fatigue. Determined not to let the disease end her collegiate career, Leibbrandt defied the odds and returned to the game in 2012. Now, after a strong finish to her college career, Leibbrandt is committed to helping children realize their potential in spite of medical conditions through her own non-profit foundation, Immeasurably More. “What drove me to overcome what I did was my competitiveness, because my mom and I talked about taking a break from school and sports, but I refused to stop unless someone made me,” Leibbrandt described. “My family was very supportive for me to keep playing, so my neurologist just had to follow suit.” Now Leibbrandt is pouring that passion into Immeasurably More. After red-shirting a season, during the second half of a game against Cincinnati in 2012, the South Florida Bulls midfielder entered with 24 minutes remaining to finish out the half. The moment was a monumental victory for Leibbrandt that was capped off by a Bulls’ 4-1 win that night. She went on to play in four more games that season and 17 games in 2013 while serving as team captain. In the wake of that experience,

Leibbrandt founded Immeasurably More to help children find their identity through the activities they are passionate about, instead of being identified by what their medical charts indicate. Leibbrandt also credits IMG Academy as helping forge her determination and competitive spirit, which helped her overcome her disorder and live a normal life. “IMG Academy grounded me and played a huge part in helping me overcome everything because it was such a no-nonsense and no excuses atmosphere. Even though I moved on I still carried that mentality,” Leibbrandt remarked. As a student-athlete, Leibbrandt was teammates with fellow Class of 2009 graduate Erika Tymrak, who was named the National Women’s Soccer League Rookie of the Year in 2013. Her network of friends and connections continues to positively impact her life. Another close friend she met as a student was JR Murphy, now a catcher for the New York Yankees, who Leibbrandt says had been her ‘rock’ through it all, and who has also agreed to be the first board member of Immeasurably More. Leibbrandt’s dedication to help children in need of compassionate care goes beyond her outreach. It has also molded her career path. The 23-year old is pursuing a career in pediatric oncology and will be attending nursing school.
