SOCIAL HOUSING AS A RESPONSE

Alejandro Leon M.

The proyect is located in a central area regarding services such as schools, transportation modes, religious buildings and commercial areas. However considering the population the proyect would hold, certain urban utilites were considered within the complex. An “A” type Health Centre was proposed with a total of 1573 m2 of construction. It serves all neighbours giving treatment to adults, children, teenagers and mothers. A drug store is incorporated to this part of the proyect. On the second floor of this same building there is a library with workshop classrooms, reference area, seated group and individual area and administration areas. Allong with this is a cafeteria for the staff, visitors and neighbours.

SOLAR PANELS

There is a total of 78.4 m2 covered with solar panels per module, 40 panels per apartment. The solar panels provide electricity to the buildings for a total of 12 hours continuously. This aids the municipal’s electrical instalation.

Since Guatemala is located in a mild climate electric heating and air conditioning can be descarded once the buildings are conceived with a correct pasive solar design. Direct or indirect gain from the sun´s heat is managed through the materials used, size openings and vegetation. In this particular proyect direct heat is procure to the apartments during the morning period particularly during the months of winter. Therefore the building´s orientation is from east to west on their longer facades with horizontal wide windows. Solar panels are used for providing warm water and electric energy. These eco friendly buildings work under a rain water harvesting system that reduces consumption from any company and helps the enviroment.
