Introduction 1A

Purpose

This technical manual provides maintenance and operation information for National Oilwell’s manual elevators. It also provides information regarding individual component’s maintenance, operation, and examination. 1B

Selection

Manual elevators should be carefully selected based upon the tubular tool joint design, which the elevators are to be used. Proper bore size or elevator configuration should be based upon the tubular manufacture’s recommendations. Elevators should only be utilized for their intended purpose. Elevators should never be used in excess of their rated load capacity. Improper use, incorrect selection of bore size, incorrect selection of elevator combination or extended usage beyond normal elevator life, may cause injuries to personnel, tubulars, and/or elevators.

National Oilwell manual elevators are designed for quick installation and simple operation. Manual elevators are easily installed by removing the lower link block nuts, bolts, and retainer pins where applicable. Properly suspended elevator links are inserted over the elevator link ears using the link blocks as a guide (see Figure 2.A.2). Caution: Care should be taken to ensure hands and/or fingers are not caught between the elevator and mating components. Close the link blocks and reinstall the lower link block nuts, bolts, and retainer pins where applicable (see Figure 2.A.3).

Operation

NOI/Woolley manual elevators are operated by firmly grasping the elevator door and the latch lock handles. Pulling on the latch lock handle will disengage the latch lock mechanism as the handle rotates towards the operator. Continue moving both handles away from each other until the body and door are fully opened. Note: Operator’s selection of appropriate bore size and/or elevator combination should be determined using the tubular manufacture’s recommendations. Guide the opened elevator around the tubular as shown in Figures 2.B.1 and 2.B.2. Close the elevator by firmly grasping the body and door handles, pulling the elevator halves together. The latch and latch lock should “snap” into place as the elevator closes. Check the latch and latch lock mechanisms for full engagement before handling tubular.

Daily Preventative Maintenance

Inspection should be performed prior to use or as part of a routine maintenance schedule. 1) Check for proper attachment of links and link blocks. 2) Wash elevator and perform visual inspection of each part to check for unusual wear or damage. 3) Check Latch Spring (item 6) for sufficient tension to properly and securely close the Latch (item 3). 4) Ensure latch lock fully engages when elevator is closed around tubular. 5) Check to insure the Grease Fittings are secure. Elevators should be lubricated daily during use and periodically while in storage to prevent corrosion. Grease Pins through Grease Fittings with an extreme pressure, lithium based, multipurpose No. 1 or No. 2 consistency grease. Accessible bore face working areas may be lubricated with multi-weight motor oil to ease movement. 3B

Monthly Preventative Maintenance

1) Check for wear of pins and elevator halves by moving one half independently of the other, up and down. If movement measures 3/16� or greater, it is suggested that pins and holes be inspected for signs of wear. Contact your local National Oilwell Handling Tool representative for suggested tolerance and maximum wear on elevator parts and pins. Elevators, which are heavily used or show excessive signs of wear, should be inspected more often. 2) It is recommended that independent Magnetic Particle Inspection of elevators be performed quarterly and absolutely at least every six months. It is further recommended that, at least once a year, elevators undergo factory magnetic particle, visual, and dimensional inspection for pin and bore wear beyond tolerance, with subsequent replacement of any parts necessary. 3C

Routine Lubrication

Manual Elevators should be properly lubricated prior to use or as part of a maintenance schedule. • Grease pins using grease certs. • Lubricate regularly during usage and storage to help prevent corrosion and maintain proper operation.

Load Test

As part of the manufacturing process all new National Oilwell API and NON-API manual elevators are load tested to 1 ½ times the rated load, magnetic particle and visually inspected, and reassembled.

Non-Destructive Examination National Oilwell manual type elevators should be magnetic particle inspected on a regular basis. This inspection should be conducted every 3 months for elevators one year old or older and every six months for elevators less than one year old. The surface should be free from oil, grease, sand, paint, loose rust, scale, or drilling mud, which may interfere with the inspection. MPI must be performed per ASTM E 709 and defects compared to ASTM E 125. Elevators, which are heavily used or show excessive signs of wear, should be inspected more often. Warnings and Cautions

Warnings: • Manual elevators are critically loaded tools when lifting tubular goods. Lifting load on elevator should not exceed manufacture’s rating at any time. • Manual elevators that have experienced: excessive wear, have cracks, experienced unusual drilling conditions (jarring, pulling stuck pipe, repeated running into tool joint, ect.); should be replaced or repaired by an authorized service center. Failure to do so may result in serious bodily damage or property damage. • Manual elevators are made using high strength alloy castings, which are heat-treated and should not be welded in the field. Improper welding can weaken the part and can lead to possible failure. Serious bodily damage or property damage may result from improper welding. • Ensure elevator bore or slip assembly configurations are used with the correct size tubular. • To avoid injury do not place hands or clothing between moving parts or other pinch points areas such as: elevator halves, pipe, latch, and links.

Cautions: Only National Oilwell replacement parts should be used.
