City Overview

A Great Town on a Great Lake The City of Vermilion embraces the Vermilion River

along the shore of Lake Erie. Vermilion has marina facilities with more than 1,000 boat slips and ramps for easy access to the lake, earning Vermilion the title of the “largest small boat harbor” on the Great Lakes. Our location, combined with successful efforts to maintain the City’s small town charm, has created a unique community that provides a wealth of attractions and events for tourists and residents alike. Come and visit us and take home a memory that will last forever. The City has been actively pursuing revitalization efforts throughout the entire community. We have been very

successful obtaining grants citywide. We received a $300,000 Neighborhood Revitalization Grant for the Vermilion on the Lake area. This will allow us to pave four streets in that area and make park improvements and correct drainage issues. We also just finished the work on our stormwater grant by installing pervious pavement at our parking lot at Showse Park. On June 25 at 11 a.m., join us as we dedicate this improvement at the park. The Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites will be attending this dedication. There will be free kites for all the children. The City partnered with Erie County last year for a Comprehensive Housing Improvement Grant (CHIP). This grant is presently available. This grant allows citizens who meet certain income levels to make improvements to their homes. Please contact the Mayor’s office for more information. We will be partnering with the City of Huron and Erie County again to obtain an additional grant for next year. We work very closely with our local and regional organizations. Vermilion markets its assets to citizens, potential investors, new businesses and visitors. Promoting a positive image encourages consumers and investors to live, work, shop and invest in Vermilion. The city works with Erie County Economic Development Committee, Team

Lorain County, Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Vermilion and Erie Regional Planning Commission to promote economic development in Vermilion. We work very closely with Vermilion schools because we know the importance of the excellent school system in our town. Working with local and regional organizations, the city creates innovative and cost effective measures to promote the town as an ideal location to live, visit and own your own business. Our public dockage facilities along the Vermilion River are operated by the Vermilion Port Authority. They operate a boat ramp and two transient dockage facilities along the river. McGarvey’s Landing and our Water Works Marina are located in downtown Vermilion. Major improvements have been made to both sites. The entire river has recently been dredged by an Ohio Department of Natural Resources grant so that our river can have enough depth for all boats. If you arrive by boat, you can enjoy a walk to our local shops and restaurants. If you are here on Friday in the summertime, you can enjoy watching a family movie in our downtown park along the riverfront. There are also many events held every weekend in the community. If you arrive on a Third Thursday, you can enjoy all kinds of bands playing music at the storefronts downtown. Some other events our city hosts are the Vermilion Harbour Triathlon held in August at Sherod Park and the VermilionIce-A-Fair held the first Saturday in February every year. The Woollybear Festival, Festival of Fish and Historic Summerfare are community traditions. This year is the 50th anniversary of our Festival of Fish. Join us for Fireworks on Friday, June 17th or the Lighted Boat parade on Saturday. Our Christmas In July celebration begins with Santa Claus arriving by river boat. Additional annual events include a Gardeners Fair, Vermilion River Trout Stocking, our Touch a Truck Event, the Rubber Duck Dash 500, the Corvette Show and so much more. Beginning in July of each year, a local market is held in Victory Park each Saturday. This is an open air market that provides residents and visitors the opportunity to purchase home-grown fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, local meat and cheese. The Arts Guild of Vermilion promotes local artists and craftsman by featuring rotating exhibits and offering classes and workshops.

We rely on so many volunteers in our community to make our town a welcoming place to visit or live. We have a very active Main Street Vermilion in Bloom organization that provides improved landscaping, citywide flower beds and beautiful hanging flower baskets. This volunteer group raises the funding for the flowers and then maintains them the entire summer with no cost to the City. Another group, known as the Shore Thing, are volunteers who work every day in the summer at Main Street Beach, cleaning the beach, providing beach chairs and umbrellas and serve as

ambassadors to our city. Another organization, our Tree Commission, meets monthly, obtains grants and works hard to educate residents and give advice to our citizens on the importance of trees in our community. This year will be our fourth year to receive the Tree City USA award. This just touches on some of the activities that are happening in Vermilion. I invite you to visit our town. Education

Vermilion Local Schools

Recent Improvements & Single Campus Benefit the Entire Community In 2009 the Vermilion Schools approached the

community with a proposal for a Reinvention Plan that promised we would not ask for additional operating money for two years. We are very happy and proud that we were able to keep that promise, not only for two years, but all the way through 2016. With the community’s support of our recent renewal levy, we hope to continue that promise for a few more years. The final stage of the Reinvention Plan was “one last thing”: The creation of a single campus that would make our district more cost efficient. Recent improvements include: 1. New elementary school 2. VHS auditorium and music wing 3. Security lighting in parking lots 4. Updated kitchens at SMS and VHS 5. Athletic field house 6. Sale of three unused school buildings 7. Upgraded HVAC system at VHS

8. New floors throughout Sailorway 9. Sidewalk and roadway improvements campus wide 10. Sound system in the VHS gymnasium It is important to note that all of this was necessary to keep our facilities up-to-date and in good condition. We have worked hard to be faithful stewards of what the taxpayers have provided. The improvements achieved over the last few years have allowed us to reduce maintenance costs, while also offering our students clean and modern learning and activity centers. We are very proud that, with the support of our residents, we were able to create a thriving center of activity that will benefit the entire community for many years to come. Philip M. Pempin, Superintendent

Homes & Real Estate

The Benefits of a Condominium Lifestyle Whether you’re just starting

out in life or thinking of downsizing as you near retirement, purchasing a condominium may well be the right real estate choice. Condos are almost always more affordable than comparably sized single family homes in the same location. While there are homeowners association (HOA) fees for the many benefits of owning a condo, these fees are a fraction of the true costs of the benefits. Such added benefits may include use of a pool, clubhouse, fitness center, tennis courts, lake access, and more. Additional financial benefits include lower utility costs and no longer needing to own the many tools and products necessary for maintenance of landscaping and the exterior of your home. When major exterior repairs are necessary, such as siding or roofing, these expenses are shared by all members of the HOA and may be covered by association reserves. Along with saving money from no outside maintenance, condo owners also find they have more free time since the HOA takes care of grass mowing, weeding, raking leaves, and snow removal. Many condo owners use this new free

time to travel, pursue leisure activities, or become more involved with hobbies. Whether your travel is for business or pleasure, there is great peace of mind provided by having neighbors close by as in a condominium complex. With fewer worries about the exterior and security, you can just lock the door and go! Additionally, many condo owners highly value the sense of community and ability to readily socialize with neighbors, meeting casually on the grounds or being involved in organized activities such as book clubs, exercise groups, or holiday parties at the clubhouse. The fact is, condominium ownership may be right for anyone, regardless of your stage in life, if you seek a relatively lower maintenance lifestyle coupled with the advantages of amenities and the security of a community living environment. Financial

Top 10 Financial Tips

It's important to make wise decisions for you and your family. The best strategy blends being wise with money and living generously. 1. Spend less than you earn. Being wise with money means having the ability to be prudent with the resources you already earn. 2. Get the big picture of your financial plan. This includes a review of your insurance, employee benefits, income taxes, investments, retirement & estate planning, and your attitude towards risk. 3. Be wise with debt. While some debt can be healthy, it still needs to be managed carefully and effectively. 4. Protect against setbacks. Even the best strategy can be derailed by a sudden accident or death if not properly protected. 5. Establish an emergency fund consisting of three to six months of typical living expenses. 6. Have a short term and long term plan including college, retirement, emergency savings and long term care. Have a strategy in place to maximize current resources and minimize risk.

7. Work with your tax professional to determine if converting your traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs makes sense. 8. Estimate your retirement nest egg needs. Use your household spending plan as a guide to your retirement needs 9. Capture the match in your retirement plan by contributing up to the limits of your company match. 10. Give Back. Support causes you care about like a church, charity or community organization. Generosity can be a lifelong financial strategy. Support efforts to impact your neighborhood, city, state, country and other parts of the world. This article was prepared by Thrivent Financial for use by Ohio region representative Jeff Walker.
