Community Overview

There is something for Everyone in Twinsburg It is remarkable how quickly time flies; on December 1st I celebrated my first year as the Mayor of the City of Twinsburg. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to the

residents of this wonderful community who have supported our efforts to keep Twinsburg one of the top-rated cities in Northeast Ohio. Every August I look forward to the famed Twins Days Festival, which continues to bring in thousands of sets of siblings from the furthest reaches of the world. The community always looks forward to seeing those who return annually and meeting new attendees. I was honored to help judge some contests this past year; I was literally “seeing double”! The City’s Rock the Park concert series did not disappoint this past year, drawing thousands of fans with popular local

I look forward to the many events that the Parks and Recreation Department will host in the coming year. Our local school district continues to provide excellent education for students of all ages. In 2016, Samuel Bissell Elementary School was one of only 329 schools to earn a National Blue Ribbon Award, the first ever for the Twinsburg City School District. Twinsburg’s schools are known for quality education, strong leadership and their dedication to each and every student.

Twinsburg Township: A Great Place to Live or do Business By Rob Kagler, Township Manager

On behalf of the Board of

Twinsburg Township Trustees, welcome to Twinsburg, and I hope you enjoy the 2017 Twinsburg Area Magazine and Community Guide. Twinsburg is a wonderful and exciting community, and Twinsburg Township is the only local government that has been part of Twinsburg from the very beginning. The township form of government has been around for nearly 400 years and provides residents and businesses with open and unlimited access to their elected leaders at the grass-roots level.

Twinsburg Township Elected Officials: Trustee Thomas O. Schmidt, Fiscal Officer Tania L. Johnson, Trustee James C. Balogh and Trustee Jamey DeFabio.

Townships operate on the principle that simpler is better, and township government is deeply rooted in cooperation. Twinsburg Township practiced “regionalism” long before it became a popular term and does more in terms of regional cooperation than any surrounding community. The Township has agreements already in place covering roads, parks, public safety, economic development, and parks and recreation, along with utilities and other services. Twinsburg Township sets the area standard for finding cost-effective local government solutions. Celebrating its bicentennial in 2017 with great pride, Twinsburg Township is home to an unparalleled combination of rich history, abundant natural resources, outstanding parks, well-planned neighborhoods, thriving businesses, and top-notch institutions. Whether you’re looking for a great place to live or do business, or just a spot to spend a quiet afternoon, you’ll find it all right here in Twinsburg Township. So stop by and see us sometime, and if you can’t make it in person, please visit our online home at to get a glimpse of all that Twinsburg Township has to offer.

Happy 200th Birthday to the Twinsburg Area! Three Communities, One Heritage Twinsburg Township, the City of Twinsburg, and the Village of Reminderville are coming together to celebrate a once in a lifetime occurrence, the area’s Bicentennial. The history and heritage of the three communities is connected on a level that makes their separation all but impossible. Now, residents are invited to leave their mark and experience the celebration throughout the year! Serving as a constantly evolving collection, the new Bicentennial website displays the best photos, stories, videos and more that have been preserved over the years. Anyone can view and even contribute at The website will also contain the most accurate information about Bicentennial events. Be sure to mark your calendar for the Bicentennial’s signature event, Founder’s Day on July 15th. The celebration will encourage all three communities to gather for a festival that will take you back through time. More details will emerge throughout spring and summer. The latest updates will be posted on the website, As if that isn’t enough, all residents can walk away with a free keepsake being released March 1, 2017. Residents should keep an eye on the mail for a free Bicentennial book voucher that can be redeemed for a historic publication titled Three Communities, One Heritage. Vouchers are redeemable at various locations throughout the three communities and must be used by July 15th. The Bicentennial will be an ongoing theme through traveling displays and other Bicentennial sponsored events. Want to volunteer? Visit the website for more information. Learning Through Play

Step Up To Quality at Goddard School Means:

How do you decide what childcare facility is best for your child? There are several questions to ask when you visit a childcare center.

Do they have degreed teachers? Are they a part of Ohio’s Step Up to Quality program? Have they earned an accreditation from a national organization? Is the student-to-teacher ratio low? The Goddard School in Twinsburg has a Five Star rating with the SUTQ program and 95% of their teachers have a degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field. Their ratios are the lowest in the area and they are NAEYC accredited. “The most critical time in a child’s development are the years before age three,” says Randy Lindley, who with her son-in-law, Jason Baker, own and operate the Goddard School in Twinsburg. Goddard is rated #1 in franchised childcare for the last 14 years. It’s core philosophy is “learning through play.” Local kindergarten teachers can tell which students come from Goddard because they are so prepared. “That is the highest compliment we can receive,” says Jason.

We offer care and education from the ages of 6 weeks to 9 years old along with a before- and after-school Kids Club program.

• All our teachers have a BA Degree; there are 2 in each classroom, 3 in infants - no aides or assistants. This is unique in our industry. • Child to Teacher ratios are the lowest in the area. • New Multi-Purpose Room for play when the weather does not allow us to go outside. • Focus on family engagement.

arc and Gretchen Garofoli spent years researching Southern Cuisine, perfecting what has come to be Oak and Embers Tavern. The couple’s many trips to the Carolinas, Georgia, and Kentucky have brought to life an idea born from their love for great barbeque. Even their wedding on Hilton Head Island featured fabulous Southern Barbecue. Marc and Gretchen have nearly 50 years combined in the restaurant business. Starting as dishwashers in their teens to servers in their twenties, working their way through cooking and bartending, all the way to owning several prior restaurants, Marc and Gretchen are restaurateurs in their hearts. Together, Marc and Gretchen developed the Oak and Embers menu to offer homemade selections prepared from scratch. Great care goes into the preparation of each entrée. Brisket, pork, ribs and chicken are wood-smoked for hours to heighten flavor and texture - pink, tender meat is proof of this process. Lighter fare options include salads and flatbreads prepared with unique taste combinations to offer an escape from the mundane. Each entree and side dish is cooked to order from recipes created from years of tasty research. The unique sauces, rubs, and dressings

are original and thoughtfully combined to complement each featured entrée. Marc and Gretchen have also developed a taste and an eye for fabulous spirits with a particular affection for bourbon and beer, which they personally select for the full-service bar at each Oak and Embers location. Elder Care for Family Members Making the decision to move loved ones from their

home to a live-in facility for long-term care isn’t easy. Change is difficult, especially when it involves making decisions for someone you love who may not embrace the final outcome. With many options available today, a difficult process can be easier on everyone. What types of Living and Long-Term Care Facilities are Available? • Independent Living: These are apartment-type complexes that offer to help if necessary, but not regularly. This provides better security and closer help, but residents basically live on their own. • Assisted Living: These facilities are licensed by the state and offer more staff on site, including nurses and aids to assist with

Senior Living medication and provide some help with getting around. • Nursing Home: These facilities provide 24-hour, sevendays-a-week-staff including physicians on call. In addition to these facilities, you can also choose a program where caregivers come into the home to help with daily chores or medical care. How Can I Make the Transition to a Nursing Home Easier on My Loved One? Start by being upfront and honest as possible. Include them in some of the decision making so they feel in control and empowered. If possible, it’s best to have the conversation with your loved one before the need arises. Have information already gathered about different options in your specific community. It’s also a good idea to ask permission to have the discussion as well as choosing the right time and place in which to talk. Once you’ve selected a home for your loved one, visit as often as you can and talk about any concerns or questions you may have. Staying involved will help your family reach a comfort level together. If you have questions or would like more information about your senior living options, please call Legacy Place Twinsburg at 330-405-6040.

MedBridge at Heartland the Bridge Between Hospital and Home Each year, millions of adults are discharged from

hospitals, and many of them are not quite ready to be home. It might be as simple as having too many stairs in the home after a hip surgery, or not having the balance and stamina to cook a nutritious meal, but those everyday tasks are critical to a successful recovery. “Everyone wants to go home after surgery or an illness, and sometimes home health nurses and therapists can provide the care in the comfort of the patient’s home, but many times a short-term stay for therapy at a skilled nursing and rehab center will help make that transition more successful,” said Joe Wilson, administrator at Heartland of Twinsburg. Heartland provides 24-hour nursing care and rehabilitation services, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment similar to most hospitals. Complex medical programs for wounds, joint replacement, stroke and I.V. therapy are offered,

Choosing the Best Pediatrician

• What is your healthcare philosophy?

By Susan Shah, MD Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, Twinsburg

One of the hardest tasks parents face

is selecting a pediatrician. It’s vital to find a physician who not only is qualified to care for your child, but also makes you feel comfortable. Start by asking your friends, family and co-workers whom they trust. You can also use a physician referral line, such as Ask Children’s™ (330-543-2000). Be sure to verify whether your insurance plan requires you to see certain doctors. A couple pointers for parents: pay attention to how the doctor interacts with you and your child and check out the

office. For instance, can kids play with toys and books? Are the atmosphere and office staff cheerful and inviting? Once you have a potential list of pediatricians, set up interviews with the physicians – most offer them free of charge. Consider asking these questions: • What are your office hours? • What do I do about after-hours emergencies? • How quickly can I get my child in for a routine checkup or sick visit? • Is this a group or solo practice? • Do you have a time set aside when parents can call with questions?

After you have chosen a physician, it is important to maintain good communication. Getting the most out of your healthcare dollars – and the best treatment for your child – requires effort on your part, as well as the doctor’s. Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics provides medical care to babies, children and teens at 25 offices throughout northern Ohio, including locations in Twinsburg, Hudson, Streetsboro and Brecksville. Our experienced, boardcertified pediatricians and nurse practitioners are dedicated to keeping your children healthy. Evening and Saturday appointments are available. Most insurance plans and Medicaid are accepted. Visit

An Ounce of Prevention One of the most common questions we get in our office is, “should I get the fluoride?” The quick answer is yes. For children up to the age of 18, fluoride has been shown to be tremendously effective at reducing the number of cavities. Numerous studies have been done to confirm the benefits of fluoride for children.

Now, what about patients over the age of 18? In healthy adults, with good dental habits and regular checkups, probably not. However, as we age, or if medications result in a dry mouth, the gums can recede and as the gums recede, the root surface becomes exposed. This root surface does not have the natural protection of enamel and the fluoride protects that surface from decay. Patients who have radiation or chemotherapy treatment are especially at risk, and the last thing you want to deal with during cancer treatment is a dental issue. We recommend fluoride varnishes for these patients as well as additional fluoride rinses that they use at home. For dental care for the whole family, call Drs. Sam and Michelle Taylor office at 330-425-2220 or go to for more information.

Homes & Real Estate

Real News about Real Estate The Twinsburg housing market continues to be very

strong. The demand for homes is greater than available homes on the market. Homebuyers want to live in Twinsburg for the same reasons you and I do - it is a pleasant place to live, great city services, it is safe, the schools are excellent, great parks and recreation opportunities, an award-winning library, easy access to downtown Cleveland and Akron (not to mention easy access to shopping and restaurants), and newer, affordable housing. Not only do we have buyers from outside Twinsburg looking for homes here, we have current residents waiting for the "next right house", thus contributing to the success of the newer developments. There is also a big demand for empty nesters looking to "rightsize" and stay in Twinsburg. They are looking for open floor plans, first floor living, master bedroom suites, basements and ideally, an oversized two car garage.. President Obama signed HR 3700, the Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act, into law on July 30, 2016, which is big news! Previously, many condominium associations were not approved for FHA financing, which limited the pool of

potential buyers for those properties. As more associations become approved for FHA financing, this will improve the condo market. Home flipping is also on the rise. The recent U.S. Home Flipping Report from ATTOM Data Solutions saw home flipping reach the highest level since 2010 and reported that flippers are realizing a much larger gross ROI this year, averaging 49% versus just 27% back in 2006. There are many mortgage options available that require low down payments, (5% or less) making it a great time for first time home buyers and all buyers! If you are thinking about buying your first home, investing, building, rightsizing or relocating, call Jo-Ann McFearin at 216-701-3552 or e-mail at

• Do make yourself available as your closing date approaches. Schedule yourself plenty of time to review and sign documents and to pay closing costs and your down payment.

Mortgage Do’s and Dont’s Buying a home is one of the largest investments you’ll

ever make. Once you’ve found your dream home and applied for your mortgage, all that’s left to do is clear the approval process. Beyond all the paperwork, there are many factors that lenders will be watching for that may affect your chances of approval. DO • Do complete your application thoroughly. The process will be more streamlined if the lender doesn’t need to contact you for missing information. • Do respond to all questions and requests promptly. Sometimes additional conditions may need to be cleared to help underwriters make a decision. • Do disclose all other loans and credit on file to your loan officer. It’s important to be transparent with your loan officer so that the application will not get held up along the way.

DON’T • Don’t make any major purchases during the loan process. Buying a car, appliances, or furniture will alter your debt-toincome ratio and may negatively affect the appearance of your ability to make a monthly mortgage payment. • Don’t open any new lines of credit. This may also negatively impact your debt-to-income ratio and may harm your ability to qualify for a loan. • Don’t move money around in your accounts. This may appear as an attempt to hide debt or large balances. • Don’t use untraceable money during this time. Using large amounts of cash or untraceable money may make it hard for underwriters to understand your spending habits and cashflow. • Don’t make a career change until after your loan closes. It’s important to demonstrate income stability. If you have any questions about any of these items, please don’t hesitate to contact us at CrossCountry Mortgage at 440-262-3724 and we’d be happy to walk you through these helpful tips in order to make your homeownership dreams a reality. The mission of Rotary International, a worldwide association of Rotary clubs, is to provide service to others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This code of ethics for employees to follow in their business

and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. The FOUR-WAY TEST: of the things we think, say or do First: Is it the TRUTH? Second: Is it FAIR to all concerned? Third: Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Fourth: Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
