Community Overview

A Wonderful Place to Live By Ken McEntee

A fulfilling quality of life is important to City of

Twinsburg Mayor Ted Yates. That’s why he believes the city is an ideal place to raise a family. “Even though we have 19,000 residents, Twinsburg still has that warm, small town charm,” Yates says. “And the quality of life here is exceptional. No matter what you like to do, you’ll find opportunities to do it in Twinsburg.” As a fitness buff, the mayor particularly enjoys the town’s many trails and parks. “The city operates its own golf course, fitness center and water park, and our youth programs are fantastic,” he says. Seniors also will find plenty of amenities in Twinsburg, including one of, if not the largest senior center in Northeast Ohio. “It’s just a wonderful place to raise a family,” Yates says. “That’s reflected in how quickly homes sell here. There is so much desire to live here that homes are rarely

SEEING DOUBLE: The Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio (left) is the largest annual gathering of twins (& other multiples) in the world! The Festival began in 1976 with 37 sets of twins and has grown to about 2,000 in recent years. The 2018 festival is Aug 3-5, 2018 and the theme is “Twins Days 2018 —TwoPlayer Mode.” All twins and multiples are encouraged to dress up as their favorite video or arcade game characters, or draw inspiration from classic card games, board games, roleplaying games, or video game themed movies. The popular Rock the Park concert (right, top); and the Arts Camp created a mural in Glenn Chamberlin Park (right, bottom).

on the market for more than 30 days, and they usually sell a lot sooner than that.” Last year marked the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the town’s first settler. Originally, the town was dubbed Millsville. That changed a few years later, when identical twins Moses and Aaron Wilcox donated land for a public square with the stipulation that the settlement’s name would be changed to Twinsburg. Today, the annual Twins Days festival draws multiple birth siblings from all around the world. Mayor Ted Yates Municipal services and amenities are mainly funded by a strong business base, Yates says. “Our business sector is doing very well,” he says. “Our industrial area is 95 percent occupied. We meet with our businesses as often as possible to make sure everything is going well and to see what we can do to help them thrive.” Twinsburg’s strategic location – equidistant to Cleveland and Akron with convenient access to several major interstate highways – makes it an advantageous business venue.

The Cornerstone Business Park, located at the site of the former Chrysler Stamping Plant remains a focal point for the city’s business sector, with FedEx and Amazon locating new operations there in 2016. “We have a lot to offer to help businesses come in and get established,” Yates says. In July, the city plans to open a new banquet facility at its Gleneagles Gold Course. “The City has been discussing the renovation of the clubhouse since it purchased the course in 1999,” Yates says. “We’re finally near completion of a $20 million project for a new clubhouse with a full-service restaurant and a banquet facility. The doors won’t open for another seven months, but we’ve already booked seven big events. It’s going to be a very popular destination.” Another popular summer destination for residents is the City’s Perici Amphitheater, which is considered one of the area’s best kept secrets. Twinsburg’s “mini Blossom” features Rock the Park concerts headlining a variety of acts from local cover bands to Michael Stanley. “There is a lot going on in Twinsburg,” Yates says. “That’s another reason why it is such a wonderful place to live.”

Community Overview Twinsburg Township…

Advantages Abound By Ken McEntee

Mostly wrapped around the southern and eastern

boundaries of the city of Twinsburg, Twinsburg Township offers a balance of expansive rural land and modern industry, says Township Manager Rob Kagler. An attentive, low-cost government, Kagler says, is among the advantages of living outside city limits. “Township government was Ohio’s first form of government as well as the most grassroots form of local government,” he says. “Township residents elect three trustees to four-year staggered terms and a fiscal officer

who together head up a township government that is lean and simple, and has a lot of contact with the people it represents.” The Township also cooperates with neighboring communities for vital services. Police protection is provided by the Summit County Sheriff’s Department, and the Township contracts with the City of Twinsburg for fire and EMS protection. The nearly 3,000 Township residents pay no local income tax, while businesses and employees in the Township’s portion of the industrial park pay a low 1.5 percent income tax. Kagler says business is thriving in the Twinsburg Township-Village of Reminderville Joint Economic Development District (JEDD), which hosts large employers like Coca Cola, U.S. Foods, Atlas Steel and Oliver Printing. “Within the industrial district we have a park, walking trails, street lights, and sidewalks that we plow in the winter,” he says. “We have a mix of industrial businesses, offices and service businesses. We pride ourselves with being very responsive to the needs of the Township’s businesses.” That’s one reason why vacancy rates in the industrial

district remain low. “With very few exceptions, in the Township’s portion of the industrial district, as soon as land or buildings become available they are bought up almost immediately,” Kagler says. “There is great demand due to the quality of the area and the competitiveness of the income tax rate.” A mix of long-time residents and newcomers to the township enjoy a wide choice of homes on spacious rural land and in more compact residential developments. “A lot of open space and amenities like parkland and

pavilions are almost standard in all of the Township’s newer developments,” Kagler says. “There are a lot of little things that residents find attractive.” Recreational space is abundant in Twinsburg Township. Along with Township-owned park areas, a portion of Tinker’s Creek State Nature Preserve and Liberty Park, a part of the Summit Metro Parks, lie within the township. “In Twinsburg Township, we have a diverse and wonderful group of citizens who truly believe in helping to make their community better,” Kagler says.

Community Overview Village of Reminderville…

Looking to the Future This past year, we were honored to

be a part of the bicentennial celebration with Twinsburg Township and the City of Twinsburg. One of the events we participated in was providing items for the time capsule that will be opened in forty years. Looking back on the last forty years and how Reminderville has transformed, it’s interesting to think of how things will be forty years from now when that time capsule is opened. We work hard to create a future for the Village and our residents that they can be proud of. We have many residents who have lived in the Mayor Sam Alonso Village for over four decades – we hope more people remain in the Village for generations to come. Creating the future can be seen throughout Reminderville. Our road projects are going to secure safer roadways and sidewalks, help curb flooding issues, and add value to everyone’s home. Construction may not look pretty right now, but as the quote goes, “Nothing great was ever accomplished without making sacrifices.” It was 56 years ago when Glenwood Boulevard was opened through to Liberty Road. Grants

made it possible to repave Glenwood Boulevard and add a roundabout. Our safety forces looked a lot different forty years ago, too. Our volunteer fire department at that time would hold potluck fundraisers to purchase a fire truck. Now we have a full staff around the clock ready to assist at any given time with two pumper trucks and an ambulance. The police station got a facelift last year and is ready for our police department of brave officers who keep Reminderville safe and sound. The Reminderville Athletic Club is a year old and we are just scratching the surface on how tremendous that will become. The way we communicate with our residents has changed. Newspapers to websites to Facebook to apps – how will we be communicating in forty years? The one thing that will never change is the closeness we feel as a village. No matter the changes that come along, neighbors become friends, families share good times together, volunteers help bond the community together. The people are why we put in the effort to create a future they can be proud to inherit and we can’t wait to look back and continue to see how great Reminderville is. Visit us at www.Reminderville. com or at our Facebook page, Reminderville Village Hall. Homes & Real Estate

Little Things Do Mean a lot ↘Increasing the value

of your home before putting it on the market is important, and your budget shouldn’t hold you back. Here are a few, simple tips to improve the look and feel of your home fast – all for under $400:

1 Low-maintenance lawn care: Overgrown lawns and bushes will cause your home to stand out – in a bad way. For a few hundred dollars, hire a landscaping service to tidy up. Adding plants and trees native to your region will also help boost the home’s curb appeal. 2 Deep house cleaning: Make sure your home says ‘clean’ to potential buyers when they walk in the door. Even if you clean your home regularly, hire a cleaning service for a thorough top-to-bottom scrubbing.

3 Make your home feel bigger: You can’t change the square-footage of your home, but you can make each room in your house feel larger. A sunny room feels more open – replace heavy drapes with vertical blinds or shutters. Also, clear the clutter. Add shelving or storage to help organize.

4 Replace and update: Dated wallpaper, old lighting Jo-Ann McFearin

fixtures, popcorn ceilings and broken features such as ceiling fans, could turn many buyers away. Making these changes will add dollar signs to the value of your home instantly.

5 Add money-saving efficiencies: Updates to make your home more energy-efficient are a big bonus for buyers because it will save them money in the long

term. Many utility companies provide free energy audits so they can show you how to maximize the energy efficiency of your home. Installing a water filtration system is an inexpensive addition that will remove impurities and improve the quality of your home’s water.

5 Things Buyers Should Never Compromise On When buying a home, there are some things you should never compromise on – or you'll likely regret your home purchase, according to 1. The floor plan. It's difficult and expensive to reconfigure a home's floor plan. If a home doesn't have the minimum number of rooms or the flow of the main living areas you want, you should cross it off your list. 2. The school district. You should carefully consider your neighborhood's school district, and even get a map of its exact boundaries to make sure your home is within the correct district. 3. The neighbors. You should pay attention to the condition of neighboring homes. Not only do you have to live with your neighbors on a daily basis, but they can affect your home's future resale value, too. 4. The budget. Consider all the expenses – monthly mortgage payments, homeowner association dues, utility costs and real estate taxes – beyond the list price to make sure you'll be financially comfortable. 5. The commute. Test drive the route between your home and office to be certain you're willing to make the commute every day.

Why You Should Shop Around for a Home Loan According to a recent study*, 56% of Americans said they have visited multiple stores to compare prices on items like appliances or airfare, and a whopping 83% of Americans said they have visited multiple websites when comparison shopping. However, out of these comparison shoppers, only 14% comparatively shopped for their home loan People like options. to shop, Buying a home is often one of the most just not for important — and potentially largest — a mortgage financial decisions you’ll make. As with other large investments, it’s wise to shop around to compare products and offers that will give you the best deal. Even small fluctuations in housing markets or interest rates could mean thousands of dollars saved or spent over the course of 15 to 30 years, depending on your loan term. And that’s before factoring in fees and closing costs that you might finance into the loan.

Health & Wellness

Keep Your Smile Healthy Most people know that they SHOULD floss, but most people don’t like to, and subsequently, they don’t. Water flossing is an alternative way to clean between and around your teeth. A water flosser is a handheld device that sprays streams of water in steady pulses. The water, like traditional floss, removes food from between teeth. Water flossers that have earned the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance have been tested to be safe and effective at removing a sticky film called plaque, which puts you at a higher risk for cavities and gum disease. Water flossers with the ADA Seal can also help reduce gingivitis, the early form of gum disease, throughout your mouth and between your teeth. Water flossers can be an option for people who have trouble flossing by hand or who have had dental work that makes flossing difficult — like having braces, or permanent/fixed bridges.

Twinsburg Area Magazine & Community Guide | 2018

Cleaning between your teeth once a day is an important part of your dental hygiene routine. Floss works, and if you do it, great, but for those that would like another option, try water flossers. You should also brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes and see your dentist regularly. For all your dental needs, please see the doctors at Taylor Dental, 9795 Ravenna Road in Twinsburg. Senior Living

How to Select the Right Assisted Living Facility Moving away from home for any reason can be a

stressful time, but when we discuss a Senior giving up some of their independence and belongings, it’s an entire lifestyle change. With so many assisted living facilities, it takes a little homework to find the facility that can best meet the needs and interests of any senior. Location should be the first consideration. Determine whether the senior’s needs could best be served by an assisted living facility close to home, where they may have many companions and participate in many activities or an assisted living facility closer to family located in another area. Once you have determined the right geographical location for the senior, conduct a web search for Assisted Living or Residential Care Facilities. Create a list of facilities and gather brochures and pricing information from them. Call the top three facilities and schedule an appointment to see each community and have your questions answered.

Touring a community is the most important step in selecting an assisted living facility. Take note of the cleanliness of the building. Is it attractive and homelike? Do the current residents look happy and well cared for? Do the staff members look happy or hurried and stressed? Can you see the senior living there? While visiting ask specifically about monthly fees for additional services such as bathing and medication administration. Also ask about meals, housekeeping and laundry services, transportation and recreational programming. After touring all of the facilities, determine the two that you feel would best meet the senior's needs and would like the best. Get their opinion and then go with your gut feeling, it’s usually right. — Jana Strock, LNH, Administrator, Grande Village Retirement Community

Building Dreams in Twinsburg! This year Habitat for Humanity of Summit County is excited to start building three more homes in Twinsburg Township! The 2018 season will see homes being built on Cambridge Street, Case Avenue and Stanford Street, helping to make three Summit County families’ dreams of homeownership a reality. Our “A Brush With Kindness” Program has also been working in the Twinsburg area serving low-income homeowners who need help maintaining the exterior of their homes to ensure that families have a safe place to live. Habitat has built eleven homes with deserving families in Twinsburg to date with the help of sponsors and volunteers. If you would like to be a part of these builds through sponsorship or volunteering on a build site, please contact our offices at 330-745-7734 or email us at

Rotary Club: Service Above Self Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad. Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary members have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, members are always working to better the world. A popular event established this past summer is the “Rotary River Run.” Locals got a unique opportunity to see one of the city’s hidden natural treasures, Tinker’s Creek, over three weekends in

July. Participants kayaked down Tinker’s Creek while the club raised money for beautification projects around the City. In fact, their next beautification project will be this spring with the Twinsburg Fire Department redesigning, gardening and expanding the brick walkway of the firefighter’s memorial garden surrounding the digital sign at Twinsburg Fire station #2, on Glenwood Drive. Want to get involved? The Twinsburg Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at noon at Brewster’s Café, Bistro and Pub, 2681 Creekside Drive, 330-405-7222. Email RotaryTwinsburg@ for more information.
