Surrounded by nature’s canvas of
red and yellow leaves, young Rembrandts and Van Goghs create paintings of their own to an audio background of big band swing music or Japanese drummers. A Day at the Chalet, held on the third Sunday every September at the Cleveland Metroparks Chalet outdoor recreation area emphasizes interactive arts, music and dance for children, but offers entertainment for people of all ages. The free family arts festival is the signature event of Arts in Strongsville, a not-for-profit organization led by volunteer trustees. The group, established in 1999, is dedicated to enriching the lives of Strongsville residents through the promotion and preservation of the arts. A Day at the Chalet draws thousands of attendees from Strongsville and surrounding communities each year – many of whom first begin their day with a hot pancake breakfast at the Strongsville City Club’s Breakfast on the Bridge. The festival

includes a variety of hands-on crafts projects and a full marquee of stage acts that emphasize a diversity of musical and cultural genres throughout the afternoon. And, of course, the popcorn and cotton candy are free. In addition to A Day at the Chalet, which is presented through the generosity of local sponsors and grants from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and the Ohio Arts Council, Arts in Strongsville also holds other events and activities throughout the year, such as an Art & Chalk Walk competition for kids on the Commons and a week-long summer arts camp in partnership with the Strongsville Parks, Recreation & Senior Services Department. The organization also awards annual scholarships to high school seniors who plan to pursue a higher education in an arts-related field. Along with financial donations, Arts in Strongsville’s activities are funded by its annual Evening of Wine, Music and Mardi Gras fundraiser, which sells out each January. The event features food
samplings from some of the best restaurants in and around Strongsville with live music.
