Rejuvenated Parma Shopping Center Spurs Development Chelsey Kovar remembers

shopping at Parmatown Mall as a teen. “I liked having a mall in the center of our town. If we needed anything, we could get it at the mall, and we were always there. It was a place to go; an institution,” said the art director who grew up in Parma and now runs a graphic design studio on Broadview Road. Similar to other indoor malls across the country, Parmatown shut down due to a decline in customer traffic. PECO Real Estate Partners, an independent company based in Cincinnati, has resurrected the original structure of the 1956 regional shopping hub into a $90-million, 756,000-squarefoot outdoor retail and restaurant space called The Shoppes at Parma. A contemporary senior facility, Vista Springs Greenbriar, resides next to The Shoppes, providing easy pedestrian access to The Shoppes for its residents. “The outdoor concept is much more modern and will last for many years,” Kovar said, adding she is pleased brand-name retailers continue to move into The Shoppes. The Shoppes at Parma is the first step in developing a town center where residents can work, play, shop, eat and socialize.

Middle Eastern Grill and The Joint Chiropractic are opening their doors at The Shoppes. Burlington announced it will be moving in this spring. “Indoor malls are not the thing now. They have run their course. Even with it being Northeast Ohio, people like driving up to a store and then walking around,” said Glenn Coyne, executive director of the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission. Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter views the shopping center as the beginning of something much bigger. The city has been working with the County Planning Commission and gathering public comments to develop a master plan for a town center. It would encompass the area around the Ridge Road-West Ridgewood Drive intersection and Day Drive corridor. “We want to harness this vital part of our city where tens of millions of dollars have been invested in The Shoppes, UH Parma Medical Center and the library’s Powers Boulevard branch,” DeGeeter said. “All of the pieces are in place to make this a real focal point.” Michael Mears, senior planner for the County Planning Commission, said many residents are in favor of creating a brand for the town center and developing attractive signage. Beyond creating an identity, residents have indicated they support developing pedestrian and off-street bicycle paths to increase connectivity with the area and surrounding neighborhoods. The concept plan also calls for less paved surfaces and more green space with possible streetscapes and landscaped areas.

Parma Area Chamber of Commerce Directory & Community Guide | 2018-2019

In addition to public comments, the County Planning Commission and city staff are also taking into account economic, demographic and other data relevant to the area. Creating a master plan was one of the recommendations of the mayor’s Town Center Task Force, formed by DeGeeter to help shape a vision for the development already occurring. The area includes The Shoppes, University Hospitals Parma Medical Center, Cuyahoga County Public Library’s branch, Parma City Hall, Byers Field, Ridgewood Golf Course, Stearns Homestead and the Day Drive corridor.

"Parma was built up post-World War II," DeGeeter said. “The master plan is intended to help galvanize the longterm potential of this area. We want our town center to be a destination for residents and visitors. As the area continues to transform, the master plan will give us guided principles and direction." Tim DeGeeter, Mayor, City of Parma

University Hospitals will spend $27 million to renovate Parma Medical Center in 2019.

Helping the Seniors in Your Life Exchange letters and call regularly. “It may seem old-fashioned, but who doesn’t love getting letters,” says Dr. Campbell. Getting the kids involved in letter-writing can make it even more fun.  Help them contend with bad weather. Any time the power fails, check in. Older people may rely on a medical device such as an oxygen concentrator or a specialty bed that requires electricity.

If you have ailing elderly friends or loved ones,

the good news is that it’s easy to help them get the care they need. James Campbell, MD, director of geriatric health at MetroHealth, says it’s important to make sure they’re safe and to let them know you care about them, “Let them know they are loved and aren’t alone.” Here are more tips on helping the seniors in your life: Spend time with older loved ones. Reminisce, play cards, or go to a movie or for a walk. Socializing and getting some exercise are good activities for cognitive health.

Bring them fresh food. Older adults, especially those with arthritis or disabilities, may have difficulty venturing out and often fall back on canned food because of cost, convenience and shelf life. Be aware of cognitive health. If you notice older loved ones are having problems remembering appointments, recent events and conversations, or are having difficulty making good decisions or completing routine tasks, make sure they see a doctor for an evaluation. To learn more or to make an appointment with a MetroHealth doctor, please call 216-957-2100. See our Ad on inside front cover.
