Welcome to Medina County
Step up to Medina County…. a great location to live, work and call home. The county is blessed to have a great mix of small cities, villages, and rural countryside with woods and farmland. We have major highways and state routes, giving us easy access to anywhere for both business and personal travel.
The county has wonderful shops and restaurants where you can find great gifts and delicious food. Many are locally owned, yet we also have big box stores and chain restaurants, so we offer something for everyone.
We have small locally owned and larger national companies, offering many types of employment in and around the county. These companies also provide an excellent tax base for a diversity of communities.
Agriculture is still a strong part of our economy with small and large farms, animal and grain farms, and specialty farms such as alpacas, orchards, vineyards, and greenhouses. Farming is featured every summer at our Medina County Fair during the first week of August.
There is a wealth of history across the county, with many great small township historical societies highlighting their history along with some specialties. We have a one room
schoolhouse, an 1850’s farm, a Victorian home, a fire museum, a trolley museum, and a R.R. station, just to name a few. Take some time and visit each one and learn about our history.
Everyone is near a park in Medina County. Community and county parks throughout the county offer hiking, biking, fishing, sports fields, educational programs, picnic shelters, nature preserves and large natural areas to help protect our streams and rivers. Get outside and explore our parks.
All year long, but especially in the summer, all kinds of festivals and events are going on in each of our communities. We have the Medina Ice Festival, Wadsworth Blue Tip Festival, Seville’s World’s Largest Yard Sale, Valley City Frog Jump, and Mapleside Farms Pumpkin Village Festival, just to name a few.
Medina County is blessed to have a wonderful arts base with musicians, actors, artists, writers, and singers. Many engage in different arts organizations providing all types of arts programs throughout the county.
Be sure to take family and friends to Scene 75, High Voltage Karting, and the one-of-a-kind Castle Noel. Visit the Buckin’ Ohio website to get the dates for their monthly rodeos. Step Up to Medina County for fun, food, and entertainment.

Abundant Opportunities to Live, Work and Play
From its official organization in 1818, to becoming the tenth fastest growing county in Ohio, Medina County has strived over 200 years to provide residents with abundant opportunities to live, work and play. Medina County is fortunate to have people who treasure the history and who are proud of the communities in which they live. With a population of around 182,470 as of the last census, Medina County offers three cities, six villages and 17 townships to call home. From historic downtowns to family-oriented suburbs to rural countryside, there is something in the county for everyone!
Do you love history? There are 29 properties and districts located on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the local historical societies have activities to participate in throughout the year. In 2022, the Medina County Historical Society celebrated its 100th anniversary. The society held a capital drive to purchase and preserve the iconic McDowellPhillips house located at 205 S. Prospect St. in Medina. This beautiful Queen Anne Shingle-Style home was built in 1890 by R.M. McDowell. Located in the Bankers Row historic district, the house features seven fireplaces, 14 rooms, and is considered the largest house in Medina. It is a historic landmark and serves as an additional museum to house the society’s collections as well as many significant items left by

the five generations who lived there. The society also owns the John Smart House Museum located at 206 N. Elmwood Ave. in Medina. Both house-museums are open for tours at various times throughout the year.
Did you know all Medina County Veterans who possess a Veteran Identification Card are eligible to ride Medina County’s Public Transportation for free? Veteran ID cards are issued by the Medina County Recorders Office located in the County Administration Building on the first floor.
The 273-acre Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery was opened by the Federal Government in June of 2000. The cemetery is one of only 136 such cemeteries throughout the United States.
There are seven public school districts within the county and numerous private school options. The Medina County Career Center offers courses for high school students who want to focus on advanced career technical training and academic excellence for life-long success. Courses are also offered to adults who want to start a new job or advance in their existing career. Medina County Park District connects people with nature through education and conservation, managing more than 7,500 acres that include 19 parks and preserves, almost 50 trails, two nature centers, and Ohio’s largest natural inland lake — Chippewa Lake. Six libraries are conveniently located throughout the county to escape with a good book or partake in one of the numerous programs offered. A Bookmobile makes stops throughout the county bringing books, movies, and programs to the communities. With easy access to three interstates, Medina County provides the ideal location for nearly 4,000 businesses. Interstates I-71, I-76 and I-271 provide easy access to the large metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Akron and Columbus. There are two federal highways and eight state routes that intersect the county. All these aid in making the average travel time to work approximately 27 minutes. Feel like taking a trip out of town? The Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the Akron-Canton Regional Airport are both under 40 minutes away! There are also two municipal airports. The Port of Cleveland, the third largest port on the Great Lakes, is located 45 minutes north on Lake Erie.
Doing business in the county was enhanced when the Medina County Fiber Network was installed, bringing high
speed connectivity to the county. In 2023, county officials along with several organizations launched the Digital Inclusion and Literacy (DIAL) program. DIAL focuses on educating county residents on accessing and using digital

In December 2022, a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house were held for the newly constructed Medina County Courthouse. The commissioners invited Ohio Supreme Court Justice Patrick F. Fisher to the event as a special guest to speak during the ceremony. The new courthouse consists of four floors and provides approximately 86,300 square feet of new space and approximately 21,000 square feet of renovated space. Gilbane Building Company began excavation on the site in July 2021. Construction of the footers and foundation started in August 2021, and the steel structure was completed in March 2022. Constructed behind the current courthouse, the new courthouse includes the County Clerk, sally port, secure holding areas, Common Pleas Court, Juvenile and Probate courts, Juvenile Probation and County Adult Probation. Renovations to the 1841 Courthouse located on Medina’s Historic Public Square are expected to be completed in June 2023 creating a safer, more efficient courthouse with ample space to serve the citizens of Medina County for many years to come.

The team at Medina County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) focuses on attracting, retaining, and expanding businesses. The business base of Medina County is not concentrated in any one industry, and the local economy has proven that diversification of industry is the key to stability, regardless of economic climate. We are always looking to attract new businesses to Medina County, especially small, closely held, or family-owned businesses. Through our business outreach program, we meet with over 200 companies annually to learn from their successes, anticipate their needs, and help them achieve their goals. Stepping Up to Excellence
For the first time in the three years I have been asked to provide a synopsis of education in Medina County, I won’t reference COVID! With a return to the most “normal” school year we’ve seen in recent memory, comes similar adjustments that the larger society has faced – the schedules and interactions all of us took for granted in those preCOVID years are now front and center. In my nearly 20 years in education, I have come to learn that schools represent and function as more than just educational institutions – they are a microcosm of the society which will come to be as each generation graduates and moves beyond the walls of their school.
In schools across the world - just as in Medina Countystudents learn not only academics but also how to interact with others, how to handle challenging situations, and how to overcome adversity. They learn how to be citizens of the communities they will populate in the coming years. Perhaps I’m biased based on my upbringing in Medina County but my family and I specifically sought to return to Medina County because there are few other communities in Ohio in which you can find a such a range of opportunities and school-community environments - from our most rural districts, to suburban districts, and our larger city districtsthere is a community and school setting for all. Each of those districts embody the spirit and values of their communities in the educational and extracurricular
opportunities they provide. In recent years there has been much research and writing about how the school is no longer a focal point of the community, but I would argue that, especially in Medina County, this is not the case. People from all walks of life are passionate about what their schools represent, and the environment and support provided to students as they grow throughout their educational journey. They care about the education their children receive and they care about the outcome - because Preschool through Twelfth Grade is just the beginning of the lives of the next generation. I am proud to say that each of the schools in Medina County are preparing our children and young adults to become successful in all arenas including military, industry, and post-secondary education. On behalf of the schools in Medina County - thank you for your support! And to all the educators across the county whose efforts go above and beyond for our children - thank you for preparing the next generation to be successful citizens!

Cancer Care Close to Home
At Summa Health, we know a cancer diagnosis can be frightening, perhaps even overwhelming. By visiting Summa
Health’s Cancer Institute, our team of cancer experts can help you live with, through and beyond cancer. By combining the latest cancer treatment technology with personalized, compassionate, patient-centered care, we create an environment focused on whole-person healing.
Such is the environment we have created at Summa Health Medina Medical Center. For many types of cancer, our patients have access to outpatient infusion services, medical oncology including the latest treatment options as well as high-tech radiation techniques.
A full suite of breast imaging is available in Medina, including 3D mammography for screening and diagnostics, diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided core biopsy. While a mammogram is the most important screening exam for early breast cancer detection, a Breast MRI or FAST MRI are additional tools for breast evaluation in females with dense breasts or increased lifetime risk for breast cancer.
Some patients are encouraged to access the High Risk Breast Clinic, whose goal is to help patients identify their lifetime risk and work to minimize their risk of developing breast cancer. Summa Health offers the only one of its kind in Medina County.
At Summa Health, our goal is always to provide patients, their families and caregivers with individualized support through all phases of the cancer experience. We follow up with patients for life.
Our cancer team is here for your entire cancer journey. To learn more about Summa Health’s cancer services, visit summahealth.org/CancerCare or call 877.201.0471 for an appointment.

Connecting Through Nature
Medina County Park District connects people with nature through education and conservation, managing more than 8,300 acres that include 21 open sites, over 50 trails, two nature centers, several multipurpose trails, and Ohio’s largest natural inland lake -- Chippewa Lake. Visitors can enjoy cycling, sledding, cross-country skiing, boating, paddle sports, horseback riding, and more. Open-air and enclosed shelters can be reserved for events large and small. The park district offers a range of public programs for all ages and interests -- almost all of them free -including an environmental education curriculum aligned with Ohio Department of Education learning standards.
The park district’s boundaries include all of Medina County except Hinckley Township, which is part of the Cleveland Metroparks system. A three-member board of commissioners, appointed by the probate judge of Medina County, governs the park district. The commissioners, who serve without compensation, appoint the park district director. The director, in turn, hires the staff that oversees dayto-day operations.
Visit medinacountyparks.com to register for programs, download trail maps, reserve shelters, and much more. You can also follow the park district on these social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
The Medina Connection
Did you know that Ohio’s official State Trail, the Buckeye Trail, passes right through Medina County? Did you know that you could step on the Buckeye Trail and follow it in either direction and end up at Headlands State Park on Lake Erie or at Eden Park in Cincinnati? Now you do!
The Buckeye Trail is a 1440+ mile trail that loops around the state of Ohio. The Buckeye Trail Association, Inc. (BTA) maintains the trail along with managers and partners of land that the trail passes across on its path around Ohio. Founded in 1959, Buckeye Trail Association started with a vision to build a trail from the Ohio River to Lake Erie. Over the years, the trail expanded to become a loop touching on all four sides of the state while passing through forested, scenic, historic, and populated areas. About half the trail is off road.
In Medina County, the trail enters through Findley State Park on the west and passes on a variety of county and township roads to visit Spencer Lake, Lester Rail Trail, Medina Square, Champion Creek Trail, Medina Lake, and Hinckley Reservation before leaving the county to enter Summit County and continuing on its way.
The trail is marked by blue blazes, 2”x6”, so if you see them along the roads, in some of the parks, or other locations, you will know you are on the Buckeye Trail. Even Medina Square has blazes on its north and east sides, posted there with permission of the Medina City Engineer.
For more information about the Buckeye Trail, visit the BTA web site at www.buckeyetrail.org

Saying “I Do”
Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes. Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of marriage vows by a couple, presentation of a gift (offering, rings, symbolic item, flowers, money, dress), and a public proclamation of marriage by an authority figure or celebrant followed by a wedding reception.
Below is a list of wonderful locations throughout Medina County to host your wedding and reception.
