which was dedicated in December.

Preservation Commission.

Perhaps nowhere in Avon does the community's past and future more completely intersect than on a vibrant tract of Detroit Road land once known for its greenhouse grown tomatoes.

The walk, conceived by longtime local historian Taylor "Jack" Smith, was developed through the multigenerational efforts of some of the community's senior residents and some of its youngest.

One of the fastest growing cities in Northeast Ohio, Avon is changing rapidly. Organizations like the Avon Historical Society and the Landmarks Preservation Commission are helping to keep the city's rich tradition alive.

The City's sprawling new aquatic center may be the most conspicuous landmark on the site, but just a stroll away the story of Avon is described on 14 display stations on the city's new History Walk,

"The displays were written by journalism students at the high school," notes Matt Smith, Jack's son, and chairman of Avon's Landmark

"Dad always says that when people are in a community, having knowledge of what others did who came before you

gives you a sense of where you are on the fruits of their efforts," Smith says. "He believes that whether a person has lived in Avon for a long time and has generations of family history here, or whether a person is one of the many who have moved in recently, the information presented at the History Walk provides a better sense of belonging here." Having grown from a population of about 7,200 residents in 1990 to around 22,000 today, Avon now features a blend of active residential neighborhoods and ample shopping and dining amenities. “We have one of the best mixes of residential and commercial development I’ve ever seen,” says Mayor Bryan Jensen, who took office in 2014. “That’s one of the things that makes Avon unique." As Avon grows, many of its newest projects are decidedly family oriented. The aquatic center, which will begin its third summer in 2018, will soon be flanked by "Every Child's Playground," an inclusive project that will provide access to children and adults of all abilities, including wheelchair restricted people. The playground, which was developed by the city, along with local businesses and community groups, is scheduled to open in April.

Avon’s new Every Child’s Playground, an all inclusive playground for children and adults of all abilities.

It will be surrounded by the History Walk, a Story Time Path, a nature trail, a pavilion and a six-piece musical instrument ensemble called Harmony Circle, Jensen says. "In the area of our playground, we will be installing a fitness court as part of a National Fitness Campaign project," he says. "It will be an outdoor gym, accessible to all residents, young and old, who want to keep fit and healthy." The Story Time Path, Smith says, is being created in cooperation with the Avon Public Library. "They will have story displays similar to the History Walk," he explains. "The library will periodically change the displays to tell another story." The nature trail, he says, will be a supplement to the History Walk. Arborist Rick Varga helped to identify the region's wildflowers and trees, which will be featured on displays along the trail. "Displays will tell about how Native Americans and the pioneers used the various plants and trees," Smith says.

Harmony Circle, a project of the Avon Lions Club, will feature six giant, colorful musical instruments for kids to play. The audio-based activities make the playground more attractive to children with vision disabilities. An April grand opening celebration is scheduled for the playground and the surrounding activities. "We think the placement of the History Walk so close to children's activities is perfect," Smith says. "Hopefully the young people and their parents will go over to check it out and develop a better appreciation for our city's past."

Economic Development in Avon

Meanwhile, the city's economic growth continues to center primarily around the I-90/Nagel Road interchange, where the Cleveland Clinic complex is the magnet for more medical and other services, says Pam Fechter, Avon's economic development coordinator. "The Cleveland Clinic continues to create an upswing in interest in that part of the city," Fechter says. "We're getting more and more inquiries from doctors, surgery centers and other medical services, including boutique  Continued on page 8

hospitals, which is a new trend in health care. People are very interested in being near the Clinic."

Avon's industrial base is strong, Fechter says. "We're not seeing a lot of new industrial businesses coming into town, but we're seeing a lot of growth in our existing businesses," she said. "That's important, because the income taxes generated by our industrial base are really the backbone of the city's finances." Avon, Fechter said, is an ideal strategic location for business partially because of its highway access - including three interchanges on I-90. "Avon is a wonderful place to live and

Education

The Benefits of a Catholic Education What can your child gain from attending a Catholic school? An outstanding education that is well above standard? Critical thinking skills? Reading and writing fluency? Math skills? Yes, all of that and then some.

In addition to following rigorous and innovative academic standards, a Catholic school provides a learning experience geared toward the lifelong development of the whole child, including spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical well-being, emotional and social growth. Catholic education promotes the value of self-discipline and responsibility along with an excellent academic experience. It encourages students to recognize the dignity of every human being and the importance of family and community. And it does all of this with a global perspective that prepares students to go out and create a more just and humane world. A Catholic education strives to instill a morality that will remain with your child forever.

Homes & Real Estate

Choosing the Perfect Real Estate Agent are doing well and interest rates continue to stay at historically low rates, meaning that today’s buyers qualify for more than ever.

Northeast Ohio is full of people who buy and sell real estate, and finding an agent who you’ll truly enjoy working with may take some work. If you’re looking to buy or sell a home in the Avon area, you may be wondering how to choose a real estate agent.

Word of mouth is a good place to start with your search for the perfect agent. Ask friends and family, did they work with someone they loved? If so, it’s likely you will also have a good experience with that person, too.

Ready to make your move? Contact Meghan Kopp at the Howard Hanna Real Estate Services Avon office at 440-934-0966 or stop in to interview one of our over 60 qualified and professional agents today.

Interview several agents in your community to find someone with the experience, skill and personality that matches your needs. Some questions to consider when interviewing an agent include: • How long have you been selling real estate? • What is your expertise in Avon and the surrounding areas? • What is your buyer to seller ratio? • How much have you sold annually in the Avon area? • What kind of professional awards do you have? • How will you execute a marketing plan? • Can I talk to a previous client? Once you’ve conducted the interviews review their answers thoroughly. If you’re looking to sell your home, determine who will give the most appropriate list price, and who will market the property best to sell in the shortest amount of time. If you’re looking to buy a home, the focus is slightly different. Figure out who you trust to walk you through the home purchasing process and who has the best area expertise to help you find your dream home. 2018 is an excellent time to buy or sell a home.
