Mayor's Message
Welcome to
Avon!
It’s a pleasure to present our annual Avon
Magazine and to briefly highlight the many amenities provided to our residents, visitors, and employees of local businesses. Avon continues to be a place where individuals and families want to live, given our great neighborhoods, diversified housing, high performing schools, and outstanding safety forces. We have sustained an open, business-friendly environment drawing large-scale businesses, midsize manufacturing, popular national chains, and a host of “mom and pop” businesses, many owned by residents. You can easily shop for groceries, clothing or specialty items; do your banking; eat at casual or fine dining restaurants; and obtain services from a doctor, hairstylist/barber, florist or home improvement company. There is no need to leave the city of Avon for all of these services. In the past year, the city opened its newest park, connected to Veterans Park on the far west side of the city. The pond is well stocked and a fishing pier will be built in 2022. It also features walking/ biking paths with benches along the way to enjoy the

tranquility and beauty of nature. We continue to focus efforts on expanding our parks and connecting our neighborhoods with walking and cycling paths. Please contact us at City Hall if we can be of assistance. Wishing all a healthy, prosperous 2022. It is an honor to serve as your Mayor. Bryan Jensen Mayor, City of Avon

the traffic and the town’s vibrant retail and commercial areas,” Jensen said. “We have developed very quickly, and it’s wonderful to have our shopping, dining, and service businesses so conveniently close to home. But it’s also good to have places where people can go for exercise and quiet relaxation.” An oasis of small-town friendliness with convenient highway access is one of the benefits that continue to rank Avon among the fastest-growing cities in the Cleveland metropolitan area, Jensen said. The new Eagle Point Park encompasses nearly 17 acres, including a four-acre, stocked pond that the city purchased last year for $350,000. “A roadway will attach it to Veterans Memorial,” Jensen said. “It will be a great place to go and fish and just hang out with your family. We have picnic tables there and we’re going to build

a pavilion, a fishing pier, and a small playground this summer. Where Veterans Park has baseball diamonds and athletic fields, maybe once your activities over there are finished, you’ll be able to drive through to the new area and unwind.” Jensen cited the aquatic facility and the nearby Every Child’s Playground, featuring Storybook Trail, as other popular recreational amenities in Avon.
IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: The headquarters of Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems has recently been completed on Chester Road.
“We have plenty of things to do for everybody from young children to seniors,” he said. In the spring, Jensen said, town voters will decide on a new levy that will allow the city to acquire and develop additional park area. A possible purchase is a 30-acre site on Stoney Ridge Road. “We have a contract signed on the property and we have until the end of next year to finalize

interstate, is mainly residential.” While retail zones feature national big box chains like Home Depot and Costco, Jensen said locally owned small businesses are the “heart and soul” of Avon. “Small business has always been our strength,” he said. “We sometimes take them for granted and many of them struggled through the pandemic. It makes us stop to realize that if we lose those small businesses, we lose a piece of Avon. The fact that our local businesses are hanging in there is a credit to our residents in that we’ve all made a concerted effort to support them as much as possible. Purchasing from local businesses keeps money in the community and dining in or ordering carry-out from local restaurants helps them to stay in business.” Avon’s highway access, with three interchanges to I-90, offers logistical advantages to manufacturing business, Jensen said. An economic highlight last year was the completion of the Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems’ new world headquarters. The 200,000 square-foot campus on Chester Road will bring more than 500 full time jobs to Avon, the mayor said. “The jobs and the payroll taxes Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems creates are going to have a big impact on the services and amenities we can offer as well as on education,” he said. “It offers opportunities right here in our own town. Kids can get engineering degrees and be able to come to work in their hometown.” The new University Hospital Seidman Cancer Center, he said, will bring first class cancer care closer to home for Avon residents, Jensen said. “Cleveland Clinic also remains a stronghold in the city,” he said. “A lot of people are looking to add more businesses to Avon and are expanding businesses that are already here.”

Finding Opportunity for Business Growth Nyema Bedell was proud of how his family-owned
mental health practice was serving client needs, but he continually felt that something was missing. He found the answer in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses (10KSB) program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®). By networking with his peers in the program, Bedell discovered a need for mental health Keisha and Nyema Bedell, Captivate Counseling conversations & Consulting in group settings beyond a therapist’s office. Cultivate Counseling & Consulting was founded in 2018 by Bedell and his wife, Keisha, to promote healing, growth and positive change. Cultivate specializes in mental health counseling, providing culture-centric, trauma-informed services that comfort individuals and families during times of hardship and crisis. With the growing need for mental health awareness in the workplace, businesses are willing to provide group counseling on company time at no cost to the employees — and they need spaces like Bedell’s. Cultivate is expanding its services to offer group sessions at workplaces, places of worship and schools. Bedell calls 10KSB one of the best decisions he’s made for himself and his business. The 19-week program helps entrepreneurs create jobs and economic opportunity by providing greater access to education, financial capital and business support services. “I am able to meet with a business advisor on a weekly basis and have a small group of colleagues,” he said. The cohort’s diversity also “provided an opportunity to share challenges and solutions from different experiences and perspectives.”

you might be waning. Yet we have to start somewhere in our journey to enhance the quality and quantity of our life. How about focusing on numbers? We can extend our health and lifespan by reducing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s or dementia, by up to 80 percent. And it’s possible by keeping these objectives in mind:
1. Blood pressure of less than 130/80. 2. BMI between 21 and 29.9 or your waist measuring one-half your height.
3. Fasting blood sugar less than 107 or your HgBA1C lower than 6.4.

Recognizing 7 Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease With more than six million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, it’s easy to worry that it could happen to you or a loved one. Knowing what changes to look for is key to finding the right support. These are common signs of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Memory Issues If a loved one regularly forgets important details like their birthdate, names of family members or where they live, seek medical attention. While this type of forgetfulness can be caused by medications, anesthesia, or an acute illness, if it lingers, it may indicate the early stages of dementia. Altered Judgement People with dementia may make
poor decisions or behave in risky or uncharacteristic ways.
Decreased Interest If your loved one is usually social but now seems introverted or they’ve lost interest in

lifelong hobbies or lack the motivation to participate, that may indicate serious cognitive changes are happening.
Inability to do routine tasks Your
loved one may routinely forget to complete or take longer to do routine daily tasks like bathing, dressing, grooming, or eating.
Communication Issues Someone with dementia may regularly confuse the names of objects (call a cat a dog) or mix up unrelated words (call a cat a cantaloupe). Mood Changes Mood and personality changes are
common with dementia. Irritability, anxiety, aggression, or depression may develop and appear intermittently or become a daily occurrence.
Concentration & Confusion Someone with dementia may put items in the wrong place like leaving the phone in the freezer or putting their car keys in the microwave. Spring Cleaning Tips for Selling Your Home
Homes & Real Estate
You might be thinking, “Why would I ever spring clean my home if I’m about to move?” But having a sparkling, squeaky-clean space is key to providing homebuyers with as much value as possible! If you’re putting your home on the market this spring, make sure you take the time to tackle these critical spring cleaning tasks for your home.
Tackle the Dirty Details
There are some chores that you may never think to do when you live in a home. After all, removing heating registers to clean underneath them is the type of task that most people are happy to forget about entirely. When you’re selling your home, however, you want to do whatever it takes to make it seem as new as possible. Here are a few ideas: • Remove heating vents and clean behind and around them. • Carefully scrub light switch plates and outlet covers. • Dust light fixtures and ceiling fans.
• Clean around doors, paying attention to areas like doorknobs, frames, and sliding door tracks. • Scrub grout and caulking in your bathroom. • Clean the insides of your oven, refrigerator, and medicine cabinets – buyers will look everywhere!

and out and removed grimy water with a squeegee. Remove and launder any draperies and dust the blinds. Scrub trim inside and out.
Make a Grand Entrance
They say that you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and that’s doubly true when it comes to your home. • Clean the floors in your entryway, then keep them clean by installing a fresh welcome mat to ensure that outdoor dust is removed from shoes. • Scrub down the door and consider repainting if it’s faded. • Pay attention to cleaning the trim, and make sure any sidelights or glass inserts in your entry are sparkling. • If you have a coat rack, landing strip, or any other furniture, make sure it’s decluttered and has space for visitors to hang up coats or umbrellas during home showings and open houses.
One to Keep, One to Store
We like the mantra “half the stuff” – for every cabinet and closet in your home, try to remove half of the items. Donate, toss, or simply pack away the items you won’t need regularly. Make sure items you’re keeping are stacked or stored attractively – things like hanging clothing by color make closets look appealing.
Spring Clean to Sell Your Home
Spring cleaning season is the perfect time to get your home ready to sell. Since motivation to clean is back in abundance, take advantage of the season by following these tips. Then, call your local Howard Hanna real estate agent at 440-934-0966 to learn more about the process of selling your home.

An Unexpected Shade of Periwinkle Blue As is the tradition, toward the end of 2021, paint companies began to announce their color predictions for 2022. Trending toward the comfortable tones of nature, both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore selected shades of grayish green similar to a Sage Green color. Both Evergreen Fog and October Mist were colors that looked familiar and could easily be incorporated into one’s home. In a sea of safe choices and neutral colors, along comes The Pantone Color Institute and their unexpected color of the Year for 2022, a bright optimistic color they created just for 2022 called Very Peri. Honestly, the color is refreshing. A bright optimistic hue in a sea of “safe” greys, creams, and sage greens. In a world that has experienced the past two years of “unexpected” events, Veri Peri is like the promise of Spring when the first little flower pokes its head out of the cold snowy ground reminding us that winter does not last forever, and the hope and warmth of spring are just around the corner. As Pantone Creative Directors put it, “Very Peri is meant to evoke comfort and hope in an unpredictable time. While encouraging newness and creativity.” Like a dose of optimism, it often takes just a little accent color to brighten up a space. Pantone suggests, it is all about the much needed “pop of color.” Very Peri is the perfect accent color for pillows, rugs, or artwork to change up a neutral room. Try it as an accent wall or drapery panels in a child’s playroom, or in a guest room. Use it in a fabric Roman shade, the perfect choice to brighten up that laundry room or office space for the new year.

Proud and Grateful to be Part of the Avon Community It started with one Avon family welcoming one child into their home. Fiftyfive years later, the City of Avon continues to help children and adults with developmental disabilities by supporting Our Lady of the Wayside. Today, Wayside is the largest waiver Terry Davis, provider of its kind in the State of Ohio, President & CEO, Our Lady of the Wayside supporting 650 individuals and managing 85 homes. The original Wayside Home has become one of the agency’s Five Pathways Day Program sites, and Guadalupe Home, built by Avon residents, is now Wayside’s headquarters. Thank you, Avon for all you do – and have done – for Our Lady of the Wayside! www.avonmagazine.org 37
