As we send out our latest edition of the Avon

Magazine and Community Guide, I would like to welcome all our newcomers and visitors. But I would also like to say hello to the many residents and employees of our businesses that I do not often see throughout the year. I hope you will enjoy this year’s edition of our Guide. Avon has become known for many things: Our excellent school system, beautiful neighborhoods, your choice of places to shop and dine, many medical options, plus increased recreational facilities are among them. The Avon of today is vastly different from that of just a short time ago. Our long-time residents will tell you there was a time when you couldn’t buy a pair of socks in this city. It’s obvious Avon is no longer that sleepy little town. Naturally, as we’ve changed, we’ve experienced growing pains; but in coping with the changes, we’ve also worked to retain the original feeling of Avon. The way the city is situated made it easy to decide that commercial development should be to the north of State Route 254/Detroit Road and residential areas to the south. That allowed our Detroit Road Corridor to become the home of our safety forces as well as the larger retail areas and many of our family owned shops and businesses. Several shops that continue

business in this area were opened when downtown was a thriving antique district. The seasonal events, parades and festivals planned throughout the year also portray an Avon of the past. Attendance increases for these each year, not only with those from this area, but with many coming from outside the county as well as outside the state. This is especially true of the Duck Tape Festival. You can find a schedule of this year’s events on page 27 in this issue. We have expanded our memorials Mayor Bryan Jensen and built a History Trail, telling of the important people and places of Avon’s past. Members of organizations such as the Landmarks Preservation Commission and Avon Historical Society work hard to keep the rich history of Avon alive. We’re determined that Avon’s heritage will not be lost amidst the growth. Whether you’re here for a few hours or a few days and whether you’re here for business or pleasure, I hope you will take the time to get acquainted with Avon. We are proud of our City! — Mayor Bryan Jensen

Small Town Charm with Abundant Amenities By Ken McEntee

With Avon’s ample amenities, residents never have to leave town if they don’t want to, insists second term Mayor Bryan Jensen. But even with the town’s vibrant retail and service sector, Avon continues to exude a small community feel. As Avon grows, Mayor Jensen says,

volunteer groups, including civic clubs and faith-based organizations, help to promote its small-town feeling. “When you look at our growth in recent years, it’s been phenomenal,” he says. “Yet we’re like a small community in the way that people care about each other. When

somebody needs something, we all rally together to help each other out.” Mayor Jensen credits Avon’s abundant park and recreational areas, safety forces and other municipal services, as well as topflight schools for the city’s ranking among Ohio’s fastest growing cities. “When families consider a community to call home, the schools are the first thing they typically look at,” Jensen said. “We’re so fortunate to have great schools here. Whether it’s our Avon

Local Schools, our Catholic or other private schools, we just offer great education for our children.” During the past couple of years, the mayor has partnered with the talented broadcasting students that are part of the Eagle News Network at Avon High School for a creative twist on his annual State of the City videos, which, in 2019 was presented as a newscast.

City Overview “I saw some other videos the students produced, so I reached out to them and said, ‘Would you be interested in helping me out?’” Jensen recalls. “I wanted to highlight our students and their talents. This year will be the third State of the City we’ve worked on together.” The video can be viewed on the city’s web site. Avon’s business climate remains strong, Mayor Jensen says, with growth continuing in the retail, commercial, health care and industrial sectors. Retail growth in 2019 was highlighted by the opening of the new Meijer supermarket on Nagel Road. In the industrial sector, construction is expected to start this year on Bendix Corp.’s new headquarters on Chester Road. The move from the company’s present headquarters in Elyria is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

“Health care is booming, and our medical facilities are important to our local economy,” Jensen says. “But we can’t overstate how important our growing manufacturing businesses are. We’re lucky to have a diversity of so many businesses so that we’re not overly dependent on any particular company.” Avon, Mayor Jensen says, is business friendly. “We welcome new

through the process. Pam and the rest of our staff are ready to help any way we can. I’ve heard nothing but compliments in terms of businesses that have come here and said this was one of the best communities to build in.” Not all of Avon’s recent new construction has been business related. In September, the city dedicated its new Veteran’s Memorial behind the Fire Department. The memorial features fountains and commemoration of various wars. “It gives our veterans their own special place,” Jensen said. “It’s in a nice park area adjacent to our aquatic center. It’s a safe place, away from traffic where we can have events like the annual Memorial Day ceremony.” The past several years, the mayor said, have seen growth in recreational opportunities, like the city’s popular aquatic center, which opened in 2016. The aquatic center is now flanked by “Every Child’s Playground,” an inclusive project that provides access to children and adults of all abilities, including wheelchair restricted people. The playground, which opened in April 2018, is surrounded by the History Walk, a Story Time Path, a nature trail, a pavilion and a six-piece musical instrument ensemble called Harmony Circle. Mayor Jensen says the city recently purchased another 14 acres of property to create additional park space, adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Park. “It will be more passive space where people can spend time and do some activities with their families,” he says. Along with the park area, Avon also boasts a variety of other entertainment and recreational venues, some that >> Continued on page 8

offer a variety of exercise classes and wellness programs, as well as the city-owned Sprenger Stadium, the home field of the Lake Erie Crushers and other special events. A roundabout is planned at the intersection of Nagel and Detroit Roads. Elevation and prep work will start in 2020, and the $5 million project is scheduled to be completed by 2022. Another project to reduce traffic is the road widening and addition of turning lanes at the intersection of Route 83 and Detroit Road. The widening, which is scheduled for completion in 2023, will go from Avon Commons to Health Way Drive and extend to the shops near Winking Lizard on Route 83. Not only is Avon a great place to be right now, but its future is looking bright as well! Mayor Jensen is very grateful for the opportunity to lead this wonderful city and serve its residents.

Tribute Gratitude A

with

to Jack Kahl –

from the City of Avon

Jack Kahl was not only known as the president and CEO of Manco (now ShurTech Brands, LLC), but also as an entrepreneur, successful businessman, innovator and philanthropist. But who was the man behind all these titles? He was a modest man from humble Irish beginnings who honored his parents. A man who learned the value of hard work at the young age of six with his first paper route. And, a man who served as a mentor and cheerleader who was always willing to share his success with others, whether through monetary contributions, information and advice, or just a book he had read. Jack was charismatic and could light up a room just by entering it. He had a unique leadership style and personality, referring to his employees as “partners” and encouraging them to have fun and use their imaginations. And he was good to his word: after issuing a sales challenge, Jack donned a Speedo one cold March day and jumped into a pond on the company property, just as he had promised he would.

In the mid ‘90s when Manco sought to expand its Westlake location, but faced a landlock, Jack looked to the west to land-rich Avon. Determining to turn 200 of the 1,500 unimproved acres available on the city’s eastern side into the new company headquarters, Jack challenged the city to make the necessary infrastructure improvements. This formidable task – completed in six months and two weeks – not only brought Manco’s facility, but also granted the city 1,300 acres of totally improved land, opening the door to Avon’s future. From that beginning, Manco has been a major asset to the city and catalyst to growth on the eastern side. Without Jack’s foresight and dedication, Just Imagine Drive could possibly still be just a dusty, two-lane extension of Chester Road – and we wouldn’t be greeted by Trust E. Duck saying hello as we drive into the city.

He was a proponent of believing in people and rewarding hard work. And he was a major spark that ignited Avon’s evolution.

Avon High School offers many extra-curricular and co-curricular activities in instrumental and vocal music, art, drama, athletics, and student organizations to extend the classroom experiences. Students are also encouraged to take an active role in supporting a variety of charitable causes in the community. Our vision is to create a legacy of excellence, innovation and service fostered through collaboration within the community. The environment that we provide enables our students to be productive and successful.

Finding the

Right Career Path Attending Lorain County JVS is a family

tradition, but Samantha Forthofer’s mom still had to drag her to the annual Open House when she was in eighth grade. “My dad, uncles and cousins came to the JVS, but I still wasn’t sure,” said Sam. But now the Collison Repair senior from Avon says it was the best decision she has made. “Coming to the JVS my freshman year opened my eyes to what I want to do. Being able to get hands-on experiences in numerous labs made me realize I wasn’t on the right career path.” It took Sam one week in the Collision Repair lab to figure out the career path that is right for her. This past summer, she was in the JVS Summer Internship program and worked at Ernie’s Auto Body Repair in Avon where she learned a lot about restoration. After graduation, Sam hopes to get into a dealership or an independent shop. To learn more about Lorain County JVS, visit lcjvs.com

LCCC is Focused on Student Success Lorain County Community College (LCCC) was awarded

the Achieving the Dream Leah Meyer Austin prize in February for improving student success. It was also recently named as an Aspen Institute Top 150 U.S. Community College – the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges. This follows it being named the top community college in the country for Excellence in Student Success by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) in 2018. According to a recent report on three-year success measures from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, LCCC’s success rate of 60 percent is higher than the state

average of 51 percent. Additionally, more Lorain County high school students are taking advantage of College Credit Plus options to earn college credit while in high school. In fact, 43 percent of all Lorain County high school seniors graduate with some college credit – saving families $6.5 million. LCCC is also one of only three community colleges in Ohio that have been approved to offer an applied bachelor’s degree. Students can now earn a bachelor’s of applied science degree in microelectronic manufacturing – with local jobs waiting for them. Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital:

Caring for Lorain County “We want Avon and all

of Lorain County to be the healthiest community possible,” says Rebecca Starck, MD, President of Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital. That starts with providing easy access to a full-service Cleveland Clinic hospital, with a range of specialties and 24/7 emergency care. In addition to providing “sick care” at Avon Hospital, Cleveland Clinic is committed to providing local residents “well care” with regular checkups and preventive services in many of our outpatient facilities.

“We understand the unique health needs in Lorain County,” says Dr. Starck. “Each year we host a free Minority Men’s Health Fair at Cleveland Clinic Lorain Family Health Center. In 2019 we hosted a similar event for women, where more than 100 had health screenings.” Beyond healthcare, Avon Hospital works with local organizations to support the community. In 2019 the Avon Hospital & Richard E. Jacobs Health Center 5K/1 Mile raised more than $11,000 for the Commodore Cupboard Food Pantry at Lorain

County Community College. Avon Hospital managers mentor Lorain High School students through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lorain County. Avon Hospital has partnered with Avon High School’s Medical Club to provide students exposure to healthcare in their community. Avon Hospital caregivers also provide on-site care for employees of ShurTech, a robust contributor to the local economy. “Avon Hospital supports the local community because we ARE the community,” says Dr. Starck. “Our caregivers not only work here, they live and play here.”

Buying a New Home? 5 Things to Consider When Deciding Where to Live Long before you ever schedule

your first home-hunting visit, you’ll spend lots of time researching where that home is located. That’s because considering where you want to live, and what that neighborhood is like, is one of the most important steps to buying a new home.

If you’re changing neighborhoods, your home itself isn’t the only thing you’ll be moving into. The area surrounding your home is arguably just as important as the home itself. For starters, knowing where you want to live will help you narrow your search considerably. More importantly, it may be the factor that

helps you settle in – or creates buyer’s regret. Not sure how to choose the right neighborhood for you? Start by considering the following key pieces of information:

1

Cost of living. Practically speaking, you will want to move into a neighborhood where you

can afford to live. Local housing price trends, income taxes, and sales and property taxes will all factor into a neighborhood’s affordability. Fortunately, these days it’s easier than ever to find this information courtesy of Google, which can collect public information in a single place for your use.

2

Safety. It’s normal – and encouraged – to research a neighborhood’s safety statistics when deciding where to live. In addition to Googling for cost of living stats, you can also use the search engine to find crime reports of the areas that interest you. Niche.com and HomeFacts.com are both specific examples of sites that will help you find an area you’re comfortable with.

3

Travel. We can’t spend our entire lives in our homes, so knowing how you’ll get around is another important part of choosing where to live. Is the neighborhood walkable? Does it have bike paths? Can you access public transit? And if you drive, what are normal traffic patterns on the roads you’ll use most? Depending on your priorities, you may research these questions to different degrees. Walk Score may be helpful for bikers and transit users. Meanwhile, Google Maps and local traffic reports can help you analyze the roads. CommuteInfo.org will even help you estimate the cost of your new commute, if you have the information you need for the calculations!

4

School. Even if you don’t have children, you need to know what school or schools are in your prospective neighborhood. Schools impact home values, as well as your local commute. Niche.com, HomeFacts.com, Greatschools.org, and even an area’s school district website can help you determine if the school system will fit into your moving plans.

5

Demographics. From income to age to relationship status, there are a number of demographics that will either make a new neighborhood feel welcoming or closed off to you. Census data may be a helpful starting point as you consider these factors, and the comprehensive reports from HomeFacts.com also offer some insights here. But once again, Google will be the fastest resource you have for gathering public information in one easy-to-use place. These five important pieces of information are big things to consider when deciding where to live. While only a single part of the process when buying a new home, they’ll lay the groundwork for every decision to come. Have questions about your next steps? Reach out to Meghan Kopp, Manager of the Howard Hanna Avon Office at 440-933-6195 or visit www.howardhanna.com. No matter where you are in your home hunting journey, our team can help you decide on your next steps with confidence.

finishing a home’s landscape design. Turn to a trusted landscape professional to get started with the creation of a gorgeous outdoor patio.

Determine the Purpose Patios can be used in different ways. Do you want a quiet, relaxing spot or a destination for entertaining and parties? A patio can incorporate a pool or a deck, or stand on its own and be the focal point of the yard.

What’s the Dream Feature? Your desired patio likely has a key dream feature… gorgeous outdoor fire pit, a built-in grilling station, or an elaborate brick or stone design, taking a patio project to the next level.

The Accessories Large chaise lounges, a circular table with an umbrella and chairs, hammocks or Tiki torches, ensure adequate space and appropriate style for these items.

Fitting It In Don’t assume that any location will work. Consider factors such as the level of sunlight it receives, how open or close it is to neighbors, and how it works with the rest of the yard’s landscape design.

Find the Right Contractor Look for a landscape contractor who understands your goals and has successfully completed similar projects. Ask to see photos of completed work in order to envision your finished project and be confident they can get it done. To get started with the picture-perfect outdoor patio project, get in touch with Avon Landscaping, a leading landscaping contractor for Avon and surrounding communities, including Avon Lake, North Ridgeville, Bay Village, Westlake, and Rocky River. Avon Police & Fire participate in Patriot Day Ceremony – September 11, 2019

On September 14, 2019, the City of Avon and Super Heroes to Kids in Ohio joined forces with our Super Hero Kids to help save the City of Avon and Mayor Jensen from several dastardly villains who were trying to wreck havoc on our City! Our Super Hero Kids are amazing children who are facing adversity, serious illnesses or significant challenges in their lives (like Anthony, pictured below). This day was dedicated to lifting them up and filling their day with smiles and joy. Our Super Heroes guided all young participants through several skits to help them save the City. The day was also filled with yummy treats, special activities, a dance party and so much more for everyone who attended! In memory of Our Super Hero, Anthony (1986 -2020)

Rotary Impacts Lives Rotary brings people together, discusses ideas and then takes action. Rotarians of Lorain County recently helped launch the Dolly Parton Imagination Library project which provides every child in Lorain County a book every month from birth through five years of age to improve literacy. Rotarians helped when Second Harvest Food Bank’s delivery truck expired. Rotary supports our youth with scholarships, the Interact Youth Service Club, student of the month, speech and essay contests. Rotary provides Study Abroad Scholarships for students to spend an academic and cultural year abroad. Foreign students also come to the USA as a part of this Youth Exchange Program. Students can also get involved with the family to family Short Term Exchange Program during summer. You can get involved with Rotary through membership or your financial support. I can light a candle, you can light a candle, together we can light up the world. For more information, visit www.northcoastrotary.org or contact Douglas Maurer at doug6600rye@gmail.com.

Community Resource Services (CRS) is a responsive, communitybased organization whose mission is to diminish the effects of poverty in Avon and Avon Lake. We provide basic needs assistance and individualized resource and referral services in a compassionate and confidential manner. The CRS food pantry is open Monday-Friday from 10 am - 2 pm (closed Fridays, Memorial Day-Labor Day) and includes non-perishable food, bread and grocery gift cards. Our financial assistance program funds are available to income eligible households for utilities, rent, auto repair or fuel cards, medical/prescription costs and other basic needs. CRS sponsors a number of seasonal programs that are designated to help relieve the burden on families during times that often carry added stress. CRS has a wide variety of resources to meet our clients’ needs in Avon and Avon Lake. Your donation makes a difference in the lives of those in need. Whether you donate food, goods or make a monetary donation, it all matters. Please donate today. You can donate via mail, online or stop by the CRS office! For more information visit www.aalcrs.org.
