BACKGROUND The Spoony Classic Charity Golf Tournament is now one of the UK’s most eagerly anticipated pro-am tournaments and continues to attract a host of professional and celebrity amateur golfers. Such is the tournament’s notoriety that for the last three years it has been broadcast on Sky Sports as a one-hour show. With five scheduled repeats from July till the end of the year, the Spoony Classic TV programme a fixture on Sky Sports 2 draws an average collective television viewership of 19 million viewers. The tournament is named after its founder, current BBC Radio Five presenter and self confessed ‘golf addict’ DJ Spoony. The tournament seeks to raise money and awareness for charities such as Cancer Research UK, Leukaemia Trust and the Golf Roots Foundation, which takes golf to the inner cities where it serves as a positive distraction as well as offering focus, discipline and inspiration. The golf tournament is part of a full family day VIP soiree, which takes place at the stunning Stoke Park Club in Buckinghamshire (as seen in films such as James Bond, Layer Cake and Bridget Jones’ Diary). After the golf tournament is a sit down dinner, followed by a charity auction and an after party. Previous attendees and their families have included the likes of Sir Nick Faldo, Sir Ian Botham, Gary Player, Simon Dyson, David Park, Vernon Kay, Tess Daly, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Ian Poulter, Jamie and Louise Redknapp, Ian Wright, Dwight Yorke, snooker champion Willie Thorne, Teddy Sheringham, Lee Dixon, Matt Le Tissier, Chris Akabusi, Denise Lewis and model Jodie Kidd; just to name a few. Also with evening performances headlined by the likes of Craig David and Lemar. FOUNDER Recognised for helping kick start the UK Garage music movement in the ‘nineties’, DJ Spoony began his career as part of DJ trio the Dreem Teem, with cohorts Mikee B and Timmi Magic. Starting at community radio station London Underground, the trio moved from Kiss FM to BBC Radio One in quick succession being pouched to take their sound of UK Garage mixed with other soul beats nationwide. Having been asked to stay on at the BBC, Spoony was able to add his passion for sports to his love for music by becoming the presenter of the football phone-in show 606 on BBC Radio 5 Live. His newfound passion for golf has lead him not only to enter golfing tournaments worldwide but also to set up a tournament of his own- the Spoony Classic, which raises money for golfing and other charities as well as giving him a chance to pit his wits again professional and other top amateur golfers. Recent activity has seen Spoony on Strictly Come Dancing, playing for celebrity football teams, notably at his beloved Liverpool at the 2009 Hillsborough Memorial Match, as well as taking up the Men’s Health Magazine ‘six pack in six months challenge’; all while regulating the after match football banter of supporters, celebs and the pros themselves on his radio show.

THE GOLF FOUNDATION Spoony is a tireless ambassador for the Golf Foundation and its Golf Roots initiative that focuses on allowing children and young adults across England and Wales to experience golf for the first time, and encourage them to take up the sport. Projects in city/urban areas consist of the delivery of Tri-Golf sessions in primary schools and Golf Xtreme sessions in secondary schools, with training workshops for teachers and volunteer leaders, with added emphasis on the training of young volunteers. With golf well known for its ‘golfing etiquette’, the Golf Roots project also aims to promote the development of personal skills in order to encourage positive citizenship. Golf Roots aims to introduce over 12,000 children to golf each year and the Spoony Golf Classic through sponsors and supporters, plus the after dinner auction (which has raised up to £75,000 in one evening) sets to make a contribution towards this. The European Ryder Cup Development Trust is supporting Golf Roots, and with golf lobbying to be included in future Olympics, now is a great time for Team GB to start searching for a golfing medal winner. The Spoony Classic Golf Tournament Souvenir 2010 will contain high calibre editorial to match the calibre of attendees to the event. The slick 80 page, perfect bound magazine will include in-depth profiles and one-onone interviews with top celebrity and professional golfers; reviews of championship courses and resorts; news on the latest golf equipment and apparel; personal stories and anecdotes from DJ Spoony and friends; instructional tips from golf experts, lifestyle articles on subjects such as first class travel, good food, fine wines and spirits, exclusive residential communities, interior design and the latest automobiles, which reflect the varied interests of the discerning, aspirational and very affluent circle of guests that attend the event. Added will be info on the charities supported, as well as pages to keeping record of scores and prize winners that will ensure the brochure is constantly keep at hand throughout the day. DISTRIBUTION With a purported print run of 10,000 the magazine will be given to the attendees including spectators of the tournament as well as distributed in the month before the tournament’s date of July 5th 2010 to members of Stoke Park and other golf clubs. These will include The London Golf Club, Hanbury Manor, The Grove, plus Dublin’s The K Club and Doon Begg golf club in Ireland. In Addition the magazine will be distributed to private members clubs such as the London’s 8 Club, the Aecoris Boating club and the RS Racing Supercar Academy. Further distribution will see the magazine hit the coffee tables, studios and pigeonholes in the BBC and broadcast partner BSkyB. Furthermore copies will also be sent abroad to past and invited guests and agents, and managers before the date to entice them from their busy schedules to fly in via first class or private jet for the event such as Sir Nick Faldo, Sir Ian Botham and Ian Poulter to name but a few.
