PRO1 trains 46 barangay peacekeepers SAN FERNANDO CITY – Forty-six members of Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams (BPATs) have completed their 5-day training under the supervision of Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) last January 24. The BPAT training was part of the institutionalization of the Barangay Peacekeeping Operations (BPKO) pursuant to the PNP’s Letter of Instructions (LOI) “Bayanihan,” a comprehensive anti-crime strategy that seeks to empower all stakeholders to share in the responsibility of peacekeeping and order maintenance towards self-policing. PRO1 started the implementation of LOI “Bayanihan” in May 2009, and has since continuously held BPAT trainings all over Region 1, spearheaded by the Regional Police Community Relations Division (RPCRD). At the start of the training, Senior Supt. Mansue N. Lukban, PRO1 deputy director for operations, who represented PRO1 head Chief

Superintendent Franklin JB Bucayu, complemented the participants “for heeding the call for a more active involvement in maintaining peace and order in our community.” “We recognize that you can capably assist us in preventing the spread of criminality and other forms of lawlessness in our areas of responsibility, and in providing public safety services to the community,” SSupt Lukban pointed out. “Kami ay lubos na nagagalak sa malugod ninyong pagtanggap na maging kabalikat namin sa pagsugpo ng kriminalidad at pagpapanatili ng kaayusan sa ating lugar. As we often emphasize, the success of these undertakings depends on the cooperation of all stakeholders,” he added. Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent Reynante G. Then will your light break forth as the dawn and your healing come in a flash. Your righteousness will be your vanguard, the Glory of Yahweh your rearguard. Then you will call and Yahweh will answer, you will cry and he will say, I am here. If you remove from your midst the yoke, the clenched fist and the wicked word, if you share your food with the hungry and give relief to the oppressed, then your light will rise in the dark, your night will be like noon. 2nd Reading: 1 Cor 2:1-5 When I come, my brothers and sisters, to reveal to you the mystery of God’s plan I did not count on eloquence or on a show of learning. I was determined not to know anything among you but Jesus, the Messiah, and a crucified Messiah. I myself came weak, fearful and trembling; my words and preaching were not brilliant or clever to win listeners. It was, rather, a demonstration of spirit and power, so that your faith might be a matter, not of human wisdom, but of God’s power. Gospel: Mt 5:13-16 Jesus said to his disciples, “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its strength, how can it be made salty again? It has become useless. It can only be thrown away and people will trample on it. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a mountain cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and covers it; instead it is put on a lampstand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before others, so that they may see the good you do and praise your Father in heaven.” Lectio • Your light must shine before others, so that they may see the good you do and praise your Father in heaven. Meditatio • We are made and meant to shine! Believe in the light of God in us. By living just and upright lives, we manifest the brightness and beauty of God. Oratio • Let us get in touch with the light of God in us. Savor the peace and tranquility of living in the light. Let it radiate in our lives and that of others. Actio • Let us express the joy we experience of living in the light of God. Share a smile and see how we all shine. (Daily Gospel 2011, Claretian Publications

Most of the time I feel that in many places where I have stayed in my local trips, accommodation is overpriced when I consider the quality of personal service, the food and the room condition. Either we improve the quality, or lower the price to a reasonable level. Third, how we deal with tourists. The taxi drivers, the cops on the streets, the hawkers in the sidewalks, the tambays in the corner, we all eventually get in contact with the tourists at some point. We should all do our part to make them feel welcome and not just think about how to part them with their dollars. Next, the management of

Tourism brings in the dollars, but there’s a price to pay especially if the industry is not planned or managed properly. When our local government decides to “improve” a historical spot, say a baroque church or a Spanish colonial house in Ilocos, do they consult historians and art restorers on how best to renovate while keeping the authenticity of the art, or the materials intact? When the coastal towns decide to open their beaches to hotel construction, do they first assess how it will impact the environment? When communities decide to open their indigenous culture and life to external visitors, do they have a plan in place to protect their children once the sex predators swoop in; or their local crafts and livelihood, once the PAGE 10

NUTRITION CORNER Our body needs Vitamin A for clear vision Vitamin A is actually a group of natural compounds that your body needs for clear vision, healthy bones and skin, normal cell division and differentiation, and reproduction. Vitamin A also helps your body's immune system fight off infections. The form of vitamin A found in foods of animal origin is called retinol, or pre-formed vitamin A. It's the most active form of vitamin A, and your body can convert it into retinal or retinoic acid, two additional active forms of vitamin A, if needed. Sources of retinol include dairy products, eggs, liver and fortified foods. The forms of vitamin A found in plants are called provitamin A carotenoids. The best known carotenoids are beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin. Your body converts these carotenoids to retinol, and they are also thought to be antioxidants that may protect your body from free-radical damage. The best sources of carotenoids are brightly colored and dark green vegetables including carrots, spinach, and kale, and fruits like apricots, papaya and mango. Because vitamin A is an important component for normal vision, vitamin A deficiency will cause night-blindness, or a decreased ability to see in dim light. Another symptom of vitamin A deficiency is diminished immune system function, which means your body will have difficulty fighting infections. Vitamin A deficiency due to poor diet is rare in developed countries and is more likely to result from inflammatory diseases that damage the digestive tract and prevent absorption of vitamin A, such as Crohn's disease and celiac disease. Alcoholism, zinc deficiency and pancreatic diseases can also affect the amount of vitamin A in the body.#

Eating carbohydrates can improve memory Scientists know that eating carbohydrates can improve memory. But Canadian researchers wondered whether other nutrients produced similar improvements in mental functioning. They studied the effects of protein-, carbohydrate, and fat-containing drinks in a group of healthy people in their 60s and 70s. Researchers administered tests of cognitive performance (a paragraph recall test and a trail-making test) 15 and 60 minutes after the subjects had their drinks. They found that all three of the drinks improved paragraph recall - more so at 60 minutes than at 15 minutes. They also found that the carbohydrate drink improved both tests the most; the fat-containing drink improved attention after 60 minutes; the protein drink reduced forgetting on the paragraph recall test at the 15-minute mark. As expected, blood glucose levels increased after drinking the carbohydrate. Whereas earlier studies had suggested that improvements following intake of carbohydrate may be related to increased blood glucose levels, this study documented improvements after ingesting protein and fat, which did not increase blood glucose levels in this test.#

PHILIPPINES RANKED.. (From page 3) 7-11’s, the Starbuckses, the 5star hotels, the McDonalds, the malls come barging in? The tourism industry in the Philippines is about to break. Now is the best time for our government to act on the best

plan that will wow the tourists, bring in the dollars and still protect our resources and people. My fear is that most people will think only of the $$$ and sacrifice everything else, even our very soul.#
