A message from the Director Welcome, It’s hard to believe it’s already three months since I started my tenure as Director of the Nursing program. It is a big job with a huge learning curve, but I feel honored to advance the school’s mission. The support I have received exemplifies the allegiance to our values, excellence, and belonging that is present in the Chico State Nursing program. Our incredible school would not be the place it is without this kind of support. It has been a busy semester but would like to celebrate our work
thus far. We started out the school year with a focus on a healthy work environment (HWE). As nurses we are obligated to improve the well-being of individuals, we also want to ensure we are also taking care of ourselves. Research shows that a healthy work environment leads to faculty and job satisfaction, better mentoring, positive collegial relationships, higher retention, more engagement, decreased burned out and lower turnover. It is imperative for us to embrace and undertake activities to improve the health of the academic work environment to im-
prove satisfaction for both students and faculty. The data collected paved the way for conversations about our weakness and strengths, and a plan of action. We have developed our Strategic Priority (See Image) for the next three years and are finalizing the Retention, Tenure and Promotion Document and have incorporated some content from the HWE data. We continue to map our curriculum to move us closer to developing a Competency based model required by our accreditor. Our Accreditation Reports are in the final stages of submission. We have had much success in student and faculty Flu Clinic Volunteer on the university campus, after all giving back is the Chico State way. I am grateful for the dedication, passion, and commitment from all who work tirelessly to help advance out mission. Thank you for making the Chico State Nursing a place of distinction, innovation, and transformative experiences. loyalty. It is truly a privilege to work with such fine individuals. I would like to close in the spirit of a healthy workplace. Let’s all actualize our values in how we engage with one another. Assume good intentions. Be kind. Be helpful. Be respectful. I look forward to discovering opportunities to fulfil our goals and pursue avenues to be the best nursing program in Northern California and beyond. Sincerely, Fay Mitchell-Brown, PhD, CNE, RN

Students at Youth Leadership Forum Five CSU students
participated in the California of Rehabilitation Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) held in Sacramento this summer. Millirose Odurukwe, Praise Uwaila Asabor, Sophie Boettcher, Larsa Hanna, and Anna Rahal provided the delegates with PCA and first aid services guided by Gema Knipe, MSN RN. Anna Rahal shared, “My biggest takeaway from the YLF was how inspiring the resilience of these kids was. It was amazing to see how they would uplift each other and celebrate their differences.” YLF focuses on supporting disabled students through advocacy and developing goals through their personal and career leadership plans for their education, independent living, and career goals. Many delegates become
leaders in their community and work with policymakers or become policymakers at all levels of our government— many return to be leaders in the following years’ forums. Rahal touched on getting introduced to the program, “I chose to attend the YLF after hearing about it from my professor, Gema Alicia Knipe. She brought it up during our simulation course, and I was immediately interested. She expressed her experience there over the past years and stressed what a vital experience it would be for us as nursing students. I was most interested in getting exposed to different levels of abilities. Hearing the kid’s experiences
has made me a more knowledgeable and compassionate nursing student.” There is no cost for selected delegates to attend. All fees, including travel, lodging, meals, and special accommodations, are provided by public-private partnership funding. If you know of a junior or senior high school student who would benefit from this program, please have them apply at https://www.dor. ca.gov/home/ylf. The application deadline for delegates is Dec. 1st, 2023. CSU 3rd or 4th semester students wishing to participate in the 2024 forum can contact Gema Knipe: gknipe@csuchico.edu.

NVHEF Scholarship Awards North Valley Health Edu-
cation Foundation (NVHEF) held their awards ceremony on September 28th honoring local healthcare students. Receiving scholarships from California State University Chico programs were M Mansoor Ramin (4th semester BSN), Millierose Odurukwe (5th semester BSN), Adrianna Snelling ( RN-BSN), and Robbin Guynn (Regis College DNP). Scholarships like this greatly impact the recipients, Robbin Guynn shared, “It felt great and very gratifying to receive this scholarship. It was gratifying to be recognized by my peers locally and to acknowledge all of my hard work, I really appreciate the recognition from the NVHEF and the support for my DNP degree.” Mansoor Ramin also shared on the experience of receiving the scholarship, “Getting a scholarship can
make us feel a lot of different things, but usually, we feel thankful, relieved, and proud. It’s like a reward for all the effort we put into our studies and personal goals. It also helps because it means we don’t have to worry as much about paying for school. Plus, it can make us believe in ourselves more and want to work even harder because it shows that we can do well. In general, getting a scholarship makes us feel good and sure about ourselves.” Guynn shared “This schol-
arship was for my doctoral project for my DNP in Nursing Education. I am working on a project that looks at whether reflective journaling can help develop critical thinking in new graduate nurses.” The North Valley Health Education Foundation was established in 1973. The foundation focuses on supporting students studying health sciences and educates the community on health-related issues. NVHEF has given scholarships to 1,092 students in the medical and health related fields of study, totaling $1,043,498.00. It is a non-profit organization eligible to receive tax-deductible gifts as well. Please contact Gema Knipe MSN RN, associate professor, who represents CSU as a board member, if you have any questions regarding the foundation work or information on applications for this scholarship opportunity.
