Come find your perfect pair from IKH!
Polyvinyl chloride, PVC, offers excellent resistance to oils, water-soluble chemicals, and abrasion. It provides only limited protection against organic solvents. This flexible material retains its softness even in cold conditions.
Polyurethane, PU, is a breathable, high-grip material that provides protection against vegetable and animal fats as well as oils. It offers excellent abrasion resistance and remains flexible even at low temperatures.
Nitrile is a blend of butadiene and acrylonitrile, offering exceptional abrasion resistance. It provides excellent protection against oil-based chemicals such as gasoline, oil, lubricants, and many solvents. When dry, nitrile gloves offer a superior grip.
Neoprene is not as durable as nitrile but maintains its elasticity well, even in cold conditions. It provides protection against oils, fats, organic hydrocarbons, and acids.
Natural rubber, also known as latex, is highly flexible, elastic, and abrasion-resistant. It provides excellent protection against alcohols and water-soluble chemicals.
Pigskin leather is porous due to small holes left by the bristles, allowing it to breathe well, but it does not repel moisture. It softens with use.
Cowhide leather is durable and suitable for heavy wear. It provides a firm grip and offers good protection against moisture.
Split cowhide leather is used in welding gloves due to its excellent thermal insulation properties.
Goatskin leather is extremely durable, moisture-repellent, and soft due to the lanolin it contains. Sheepskin leather is ideal not only for heavy-duty use but also for tasks requiring precision, such as gloves that demand good fingertip sensitivity.
Butyl rubber does not stretch and can feel somewhat stiff in use. It withstands cold conditions well and provides excellent protection against ketones (e.g., acetone), esters, strong acids, aldehydes, amides, amines, and alcohols.
Amara fiber is a blend of polyamide and polyurethane, making it suitable for gloves used by individuals with chromium allergies. It offers good abrasion resistance in dry conditions.
Polyester, PES, is widely used as a glove material due to its excellent color retention, easy maintenance, and abrasion resistance. Polyester does not shrink or stretch.
Polyamide (nylon) is an extremely durable and lightweight material with excellent abrasion resistance.
Cotton is a highly breathable material that does not generate static electricity. It is comfortable against the skin and is most commonly used in liner gloves and as a lining material.
Top-grain leather is the smooth outer surface of the leather. It is a soft, durable, high-grip, and moisture-resistant glove material with excellent heat resistance.
Split leather is the inner layer of leather obtained by splitting the hide lengthwise. The surface becomes uneven and fuzzy, providing a good grip. Split leather is porous and allows moisture to pass through more easily than top-grain leather. However, it remains a durable glove material with better heat resistance than top-grain leather.
Protective gloves are divided into three categories based on the type of hazards and risks they protect the wearer from.
Category 1: Protection against minimal hazards only
The CE mark indicates that the product is compliant with the Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment. Gloves that are suitable for, for example, gardening or other light tasks with a minimal risk of injury.
Category 2: Protection against intermediate hazards – all gloves not in category 1 or 3. Protection against mechanical hazards. Intended for more complex use.
In addition to the CE mark, the product is marked with a pictogram indicating the protection properties. These gloves are usually tested according to the standard EN 388. Category-2 gloves are intended to protect the wearer from injuries that are not classified as minimal nor very high.
EN ISO 21420 / EN 420 Protective gloves. General
• The gloves themselves must not present a risk or hazard.
• The pH level of the gloves must be neutral; the pH level of leather gloves should be between 3.5 and 9.5.
• The highest permissible level of chromium content is 3 mg/ kg (hexavalent chromium).
Category 3: Protection against very serious hazards
Gloves designed to protect the wearer from serious risks and hazards are used when there is a risk of a serious or permanent injury, for example, when handling aggressive chemicals. The number following the CE mark is the identifier of the accredited institute monitoring the product’s conformity with the relevant standards.
• The manufacturer must indicate if substances known to cause allergies have been used in the glove material.
A Abrasion resistance
The material is sanded under steady pressure. The performance level falls between one and four, depending on how many cycles the glove can handle without breaking. The higher the performance level, the better the abrasion resistance – see the table.
B Circular blade cut resistance (Coupe)
The smallest number of cycles (circular blade) to break the glove material is determined. The performance level falls between one and five with five being the best result.
C Tear resistance
First, the glove is cut. Then, the force (N) required to tear the cut is measured. The property of tear resistance indicates the glove’s mechanical strength. In general, the higher the performance level value, the better. However, a lower performance level is ideal in situations where the glove might get stuck in the working parts of a machine, for example. The performance level is between one and four.
D Puncture resistance
It is determined how much force (N) is required to puncture the glove material
with a pin (resembling a nail, not a thin needle). Puncture resistance does not indicate the gloves’ resistance to injection needles. The performance level is between one and four.
E Straight blade cut resistance (TDM)
It is determined how much force is required to cut the glove material with a straight, falling blade. Performance level scale A–F / 2–30 newtons (10 newtons = 1 kg).
F Impact resistance
Impact resistance is tested with an impact force of 5 joules. The test is only conducted on gloves that are resistant against impact and only around the protected area (knuckles). This is a pass/fail test. If the glove passes the test, a ’P’ will be shown on the glove marking.
If a test result is ’0’, the glove falls below the minimum performance level. If any of the test results have an ’X’ next to them, it means that the property in question has not been tested.
1 Flammability
The glove material is stretched and lit by using a gas flame. The material must be in contact with the open flame for, at least, 15 seconds. Then, it is measured how long it will take for the material to stop burning or glowing. If there is a risk of the gloves being in contact with open flame, the material must meet the requirements of performance level 3.
2 Contact heat resistance
The glove material is exposed to a heat source between 100 and 500°C. The test measures how long it will take for the glove’s core temperature to rise 10°C higher than the material’s initial temperature (around 25°C). The material must be exposed to heat for, at least, 15 seconds. Level-2 glove material is an exception
to these requirements. Level-2 material must endure, at least, 250°C for, at least, 15 seconds until the material’s temperature reaches +35°C.
3 Convective heat resistance
This test determines how long it will take for the temperature of the inner surface of the glove material to rise to 24°C when the material is warmed up with a gas flame (80 Kw/m2).
4 Radiant heat resistance
The glove material is stretched in front of a heat source of 20–40 kW/m2. The average time of thermal transfer of 2.5 kW/ m2 is measured. The highest performance level is 4, which means that the glove protects the wearer from radiant heat for, at least, 150 seconds.
5 Small splashes of molten metal
The test is based on the measurement of the number of droplets of molten metal. The test determines the number of molten metal droplets needed to raise the temperature between the material and skin to 40°C. The highest performance level is 4, which is equivalent to, at least, 35 droplets.
6 Large splashes of molten metal
An artificial PVC hood is attached to the inner side of the glove material. Molten iron is then poured on top of the glove material. The test measures how many grammes of molten iron are needed to damage the PVC layer.
• The requirements of EN 12477 are a combination of the requirements of standards EN 388 and ISO 23407 / EN 407.
• The gloves protect the wearer against splashes of molten metal, short-term exposure to open flames, convective and radiant heat, and mechanical risks, for example.
• The gloves are divided into two categories based on their structure and end use – type A and type B.
511
• Type-A gloves provide better heat protection but are not very flexible.
• Type-B gloves have a lower heat resistance but are more flexible and provide better dexterity. EN 511
The test determines the material’s capacity to conduct cold as well as its isolation capacity (in contact). Three numbers are given next to a pictogram. The first number indicates the material’s resistance to penetrating cold. The second number indicates the material’s resistance to cold when in contact with cold objects. The higher the performance level, the better the material’s isolation capacity. The final number shows whether water can penetrate the material in 30 minutes (0 = yes, 1 = no).
• A Convective cold (performance level 0–4)
• B Contact cold (0–4)
• C Water penetration (performance level 0 or 1)
Approximately 15,000 different chemicals are used in industry and households in Finland. Tested and approved protective gloves against chemicals are necessary to protect the wearer from injury. The right choice of gloves depends on the chemical type and how long the chemical will be handled.
It is recommended to ”quick test” the gloves before use: if the gloves harden or swell upon contact with the chemical being used, the material is incorrect.
Degradation refers to the destructive effect a chemical has on the material.
Penetration refers to the flow of chemicals and microorganisms that pass through porous materials, seams, small holes, or minor defects in the material.
Permeation refers to the process in which a chemical passes through the protective material at the molecular level. Additionally, if the outer surface of the material is porous, it can act like a sponge, absorbing the chemicals. For this reason, it is crucial to measure the permeation time.
Protective gloves against chemicals are divided into three types based on their permeation resistance level: type A, type B and type C.
ISO 374-1/Type A
U V W X Y Z
Type A: the chemical permeation resistance level must be at least 2 for at least six test chemicals specified in the table below.
ISO 374-1/Type B
U V W
Type B: the chemical permeation resistance level must be at least 2 for at least three test chemicals specified in the table below.
ISO 374-1/Type C
Type C: the chemical permeation resistance level must be at least 1 for at least one test chemicals specified in the table below.
ISO 374-5
Protective gloves against chemicals can also protect the wearer from micro-organisms, i.e. bacteria, viruses or microscopic fungi.
Gloves protecting from viruses, bacteria and fungi are tested by conducting a virus penetration test and/or a bacteria
