PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS H
Bruce Sams, IIAD President
Thank you all for making this the best local association in the State and possibly the Nation. Â It does not happen without the participation of our members, companies and associate members, and I encourage you to get involved."Â 5.
VOLUNTEERISM IS THE MAIN COG IN IIAD’S WHEEL, SO PLEASE CONSIDER HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED."
want to start off by expressly thanking IIAD’s Golf Committee (see list of committee members on page 16), led by chair Drew Brown of Texcap. The Committee started working in January, meeting monthly to decide important decisions and plan the event. Their duties culminated on “Game Day” by helping the IIAD Staff execute the plan. As a result of their hard work, we were all rewarded with a near-flawless event, and greatly appreciate their efforts. Volunteerism is the main cog in IIAD’s wheel, so please consider how you can get involved. The Jim Millerman Committee (formerly known as All Industry Day) is cranking up to plan our 30th Anniversary Event on November 2, 2017. Contact us if you would like to be a part of the team. Mother Nature hasn’t been kind this spring, with baseball-size hail, tornado and storm activity in North Texas ravaging Plano, McKinney, Canton and other neighboring areas. Hail litigation has spiraled out of control in Texas, and in an effort to curtail it, the “hailstorm” bill SB10 authored by Kelly Hancock was recently passed in the Senate. Steve Badger of Zelle LLP. will be our guest speaker at the June 21st membership luncheon. Steve has filed his presentation concerning the issues arising in hail damage claims and resulting litigation for one hour of CE. This will be an informative and entertaining presentation, and a “bonus” hour of CE in addition to the CE held prior to the luncheon. Next up in the way of big events for IIAD is our inaugural Clay Shooting Event on 9/21/17 at the Dallas Gun Club. Registration for the event will be available soon on our IIAD website. 7.

YA PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Our Dallas insurance community played a big part in the successful fundraising efforts, of which I couldn’t be prouder."
Happy Spring fellow IIAD members!
It seems I blinked and springtime was here. Crazy how
that happens! Since the last article, there are a few items that I am very proud to share with all of you. March, normally one of my favorite months because of non-stop basketball games, had a much more significant meaning this year. Philip Lawson captained our group’s efforts to raise money as part of Team John Wayne, raising funds for The John Wayne Cancer Foundation. This foundation helps to fund novel and innovative programs that improve cancer patient’s outcomes. Its goal is to save lives through research, education, awareness and support. Out of the $12,285 our group collected, Philip was responsible for bringing in $11,610 on his own as he worked to raise enough money to name a research grant in memory of his father, Ron Lawson. Our Dallas insurance community played a big part in the successful fundraising efforts, of which I couldn’t be prouder.
But that’s not all we’ve been up to. May also means the annual IIAD golf tournament. With the help of three very brave IIAD representatives (Bruce Sams, Lance Goff and Stephen Pine), our group raised $585 to help fund this year’s MakeA-Wish event. On top of that, the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) came in big for us and matched all money raised. That’s $1,170 in one day! We are so grateful for everyone who participated in the fun, and I’d like to give a special shout out to my team members that helped the day be such a success (that means you Gary Lindsey, Shyla Lankford and Eric Hernandez!). As we roll into summer, keep an eye out for info on our partnership event to be held in July with IIATC’s Young Agents. You won’t want to miss it! Grab the sunblock, summer is upon us!

IIAD GOLF TOURNAMENT 2017
"We hope to continue to bring value to all sponsors and attendees."
nother huge success at the IIAD 2017 Golf Tournament held at the Dallas Athletic Club on Monday, May 15th. Each year gets better and better. Thanks to the golf committee, volunteers, sponsors, and attendees for coming together for a first-class event. This year’s theme was the “County Fair” theme. The weather was nice and both courses were filled with golfers, sponsors, county fair food, and beverages. Drew Brown (golf committee chair) headed the first golf meeting at the beginning of this year. All committee members showed up with creative ideas and enthusiastic attitudes in order to prepare for a favorable outcome. We had over 20 volunteers on the day of the event. This event would not be possible without the tireless efforts they did to prepare for this day. There were 288 golfers plus lunch and dinner attendees and over 50 sponsors. Located near registration, Herbs’ brats and hot dogs trailer and Service Lloyd’s Chipping contest was IIAD Young Agents (YA) first annual Dunking Booth sponsored by Great American. IIAD President Bruce Sams, Treasurer Stephen Pine, and Lance Golf were the lucky dunkees. Thanks to IICF for agreeing to match funds raised by the YA. Our sponsors (see page 21) were set up throughout the courses, some with County Fair Décor. Attendees enjoyed the premium food hole sponsors corn dogs and Frito pies. The beverage and margarita hole sponsors provided a variety of drinks to quench thirst. Following the tournament, attendees sat by the newly designed pool area and savored their choice of BBQ Brisket or Pecan Crusted Chicken along with varies sides and desserts. Dinner was sponsored by Safeco and Liberty Mutual. During dinner, several door prizes and awards were given, MC’d by IIAD President Bruce Sams (see winners on page 23). An enormous thank you to our main sponsors: Burns & Wilcox, Assured Partners of Texas, Texas Mutual, Midlands, Safeco, Liberty Mutual, and Herb’s Paint & Body. We hope to continue to bring value to all sponsors and attendees. See you next year! Article by IIAD Staff

Insurance Employment Services sends out emails describing the candidates we are
currently helping to find new career homes. IES sends these updates out 2 or 3 times a month. The candidate “snap shots” describe their skills sets, experience, and position they are looking for. IES is typically working with 40 to 50 candidates that represent many different skill sets needed within the insurance industry. If you are not receiving our “snap shot” email updates please ask and we will put you on the list. Many people have stated “we weren’t looking to hire, but the right “snap shot” was in your email blast that motivated us to interview.” If you wish to receive these, or you have questions please contact John Spicer, IES Director, email@example.com. Myron Steves has teamed up with IIAD for the past five years to offer 3 - $300 scholarships annually to insurance students at Woodrow Wilson High School, a school with a high percentage of the student population living at the poverty level. That translates to $4,500 (for those needing math assistance) in scholarship money that Myron Steves has donated to students in need. IIAD has developed a relationship with the school over the past 5+ years by teaching InVEST, helping with insurance concepts, providing internships and mentoring the young people in the Academy of Finance. To be eligible for the scholarships, the students are required by their teacher to write an essay describing their needs, and how they would use the $300 scholarship if awarded. Books for college, professional clothing for job interviews and laptops rank at the top of their “Wish” lists. A number of the low income students find themselves studying at the public library where they can access computers. Imagine life without a home computer.
On May 10th, Genise May & Barbara Murray of Myron Steves, along with Tammy Land of IIAD presented this year’s three scholarships to Wendy Reyes, Esmeralda Miguel and Angel Montelongo. Angel is attending El Centro after graduation and will use his scholarship to help pay for books and supplies. Esmeralda, a new mom, will be the first in her family to attend college. She will use the money to buy a laptop. Wendy will also be attending El Centro this fall, and will put the scholarship money towards her college tuition.
"IIAD has developed a relationship with the school over the past 5+ years by teaching InVEST, helping with insurance concepts, providing internships and mentoring the young people in the Academy of Finance." Please join me in thanking Myron Steves for their generous support of the next generation: our future workforce.
