Candles can be a great romantic item for Christmas, and this workshop had participants making beeswax candles. Beeswax is made by bees when they excrete a special substance for building their hive from their bodies. Beeswax is a natural and environmentally-friendly substance, with a wonderful warm yellow colour. When lit, these candles give off a mildly sweet fragrance. With their own individual designs in mind, everyone cut and rolled sheets of wax into shapes like rods and pyramids. The second kind candle made was done by dipping a weighted wick into a heated can full of melted wax, and repeating this until the shape of a candle was gradually formed. This took some time, but the candles looked great once the wax had hardened into a natural shape.
