Emergency Dental Care All emergency dental care will be provided at the General Health and Welfare Centre (Sogo Hoken Fukushi Senta) in Uchigo. April is the month for Hanami (flower viewing). In this month’s Japan Today, some of the Cherry Blossom viewing sites around Iwaki will be introduced. For more information please refer to the Iwaki Vision Spring Edition, pages 6-7. Yakuoji Temple 薬王寺 The cherry blossom trees lining the way to the temple bloom beautifully during the spring time. Address: 74 Hanawa, Yakuoji, Yotsukura.

Along the Shinkawa River 新川沿い There are around one hundred and fifty cherry blossom trees along the river south of Iwaki City Hall, which fill the scene with the colours of spring. Address: Minamishirado/Kuramae/Misaki, Taira.

Misaki Park 三崎公園 This is a very popular flower viewing site, where you can enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms in harmony with the blue ocean. Address: 93 Daisaku, Shimokajiro, Onahama. Ojyoyama Yama-zakura (Mountain Cherry Blossoms) 往生山の山桜 These trees are located in the north of Tono. The harmony of the rich green mountains and the pink cherry blossoms is beautiful. The best time to appreciate them is in early May. Address: Ojyo-yama, Tono. 5


May 2nd& 3rd: Iwaki Yumoto Onsen Satsuki Matsuri @ Yumoto Onsen Shrine, near Yumoto Station. This is an annual festival, with a small festival on the eve of the main festival on the 2nd and the main festival on the 3rd. On the main festival there will be 6 omikoshi (portable shrine) carried through the town. May 3 : Onahama Suwa Shrine Annual Matsuri @ Onahama, from 8:00am. This is an annual omikoshi (portable shrine) festival held in Onahama. There will be various types of omikoshi carrying in Onahama area, including an omikoshi that weighs around 2 tons and children’s omikoshi. May 3 & 4th: Okunitama Shrine Annual Matsuri @ Okunitama Shrine, Taira. There will be many traditional dance performances dedicated to the gods and omikoshi (portable shrine) carrying on the main festival day on the 4th. A group of parents and children with Chinese roots started a circle called “Panda”. It is aimed at teaching children traditional Chinese cultures and familiarizing them with Chinese language through games and plays. Those who are not of Chinese descent are also welcome too. Japan-China Friendship Group “Harmony (Wa)” A Japan-China Friendship Group “Harmony (Wa)” was created with an aim to study Chinese along with deepening your understanding of Chinese cultures. Let’s have fun studying Chinese and also learning about Chinese culture such as the seasonal events in China. Some of our new books include English books on Japanese culture and history, books on interpretation, volunteering to teach Japanese, Japanese books for advanced learners etc. If you are an IIA member, these books can be borrowed free of charge for 2 weeks. There is also a great collection of Japanese language textbooks, for general use and also for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. We have some renewed JLPT textbooks for all levels, so please come by if you need to select appropriate books to study for the JLPT!

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is recognised worldwide as a valid test of one’s Japanese ability. Every year the JLPT is held on the first Sunday of July and December. The application for the July JLPT will be open from the 1st of April to the 1st of May. You can apply online at: http://info.jees-jlpt.jp/ after creating a My JLPT account. You can also apply via mail. If applying via mail you will need to purchase an application pack. Application Packs will be available at major bookstores from the middle of March. Important Information for Mid-year JLPT Exam Date& Time: Sunday, July 7th, from 12:30pm (Test Room open at noon, Test starts at 12:30). Test Fee: 5500yen. Application Pack (Required for Mail Applications): On sale in major bookstores (500yen). Application Deadline: Mail Application: Postmarked by May 1st. The beautiful sakura (cherry blossom) season will begin this month in Iwaki and Fukushima Prefecture. There are plenty of hanami spots around Iwaki and the prefecture, so please make an effort to check them out, while enjoying the warm pleasant weather. A guide to hanami in Iwaki is on pages 6-7 of Iwaki Vision Spring 2013 and page 5 of this month’s Time Out. For those of you that wish to take the JLPT in the first week of July this year, please apply online or send the application by the 1st of May. 
