CONTEST NOTES JUDGE CERTIFICATION MEETINGS Listed below are the Judge Certification Training sites as of this issue of SWIFT. We encourage all coaches to go to a certification meeting to become more aware of the rules and the new changes. At the first several meetings we have had great attendance! . IHSSA State Debate Clinic October 2, 2021 Simpson College Debate Tournament Virtual (Please see flyer in SWIFT)

It’s 1992. I’m a student teacher. Big hair, high heels and a couple of new “teacher” outfits to my name. Nervous. Hopeful. Anxious. My cooperating teacher, Denis Hildreth, has invited me to attend “Convention” in West Des Moines. I gleefully accept. One of the most important decisions in my life. Immediately, I am awe struck by the people—so much energy and excitement. Passion at its best! And the focus—always on the students. These are my “people”. They ask my name. They encourage. They share and laugh. They laugh more….. and more. They motivate. They inspire. They affirm. I have journeyed to “Convention” and I am home!

Iowa Alliance for Arts Education The Iowa Alliance for Arts education has been in existence since 1988. The need for an “umbrella” advocacy organization for fine arts education in Iowa was heightened by financial constraints caused by a farm crisis of the late 1980’s and the subsequent cuts to fine arts programs in schools across our state. Iowa was fortunate to have visionary arts education leaders who realized that we would have greater impact if all the arts areas were “united as one voice”. It also maintains an Advisory Board made up of representatives of professional arts education organizations, Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Association of School Boards, Iowa Association of School Music Dealers, with collaboration from the Iowa Arts Council and Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. IAAE focuses its programming and activities in three different areas: 1. Advocacy for fine arts education at the local, state and national level 2. Professional development for fine arts educators 3. Mentorship of beginning fine arts teachers Advocacy: IAAE provides support for local arts advocacy by providing up-to-date and pertinent information to arts education leaders. The information provided to local advocates assists them in being a powerful voice for their stakeholders. IAAE also provides individual advocates coaching.

Information about this group and joinng will be at the IHSSA Coaches Convention.

Professional Development: IAAE works with its member organizations to provide professional development for arts educators. Topics of professional development opportunities have included: fine arts standards, arts assessment, transdisciplinary education, and leadership. IAAE has been a sponsor (along with the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Arts Council, and Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs) of Arts Education Summits in 2019 and 2021. The topics addressed at these events included Fine Arts Standards and Social-Emotional Learning/Arts Education. The past two conferences have provided professional development for hundreds of arts educators in our state. Mentorship: IAAE has been providing mentorship for beginning fine arts teachers in Iowa since 2006. The mentorship program has three components: 1. Mentor visits (both in-person and virtual) for beginning teachers at no cost to the local school district 2. Professional development for beginning fine arts teachers 3. Scholarships for beginning teachers to join their professional organizations and attend professional conferences. The participating organizations in the mentoring program include: Art Educators of Iowa, Iowa Bandmasters Association, Iowa Choral Directors Association, Iowa Music Educators Association, Iowa String Teachers Association, and the Iowa Thespians. Iowa is the only state in the country that provides a mentoring program of this size and scope for fine arts teachers. If are you interested in joining IAAE or learning more about the organization you can visit the IAAE website: or contact the IAAE Executive Director, Leon Kuehner at:
