e waited all year for summer and now it is gone, however, it is time to look to the future and what great events we have with IHSSA this year. I know summer has left, but - yahoo! - the speech year is about to begin for us all! It is a GREAT DAY FOR SPEECH IN IOWA! To those of you who are coming to the IHSSA for the first time, I offer a warm welcome from a great organization and the best educators in the state. I hope your year will be one with great joy and excitement. To our “old” friends, welcome back! Your loyalty and dedication to the IHSSA and our office has made this organization one of the top speech groups in the country. Your support and help when Deb and I call for that extra hand has made our job enjoyable and gratifying. I send heartfelt thanks to all. So, once again, we start our journey and with another blink of an eye it will be contest season!! I know! You cannot wait!!
ith this first SWIFT you will notice several items that we are very excited about for the 2021-2022 year. Many of you came to the Judges/Coaches workshop in the virtual format this year again. What a great day it was to learn so many new ways to express comments in judging. This year we have a 2nd iteration of the re-invented State Debate Clinic. It is going to be virtual and have Simpson College debaters helping out. We are very excited about this because of what it can do for all of our new debate students. New debaters will be able to hear from college debate coaches who are leaders in the field and then actually work with Simpson College debate students who will help write new cases and start that new debate student down a very good path of success for the rest of the year. Please see more info in this SWIFT or on the IHSSA web site.
his year, membership cards were sent to the speech coach of each school and not the school administrator. Many times you have asked for this because the card would get lost or not paid. Be sure to take time to fill out the membership card and get it paid. If you did not receive a membership card contact the state office ASAP.

oaches Convention on the 15th and 16th of October is going to be a great event. Be sure you are making plans to attend this
year’s convention at the Gateway Hotel in Ames. The Committee has worked hard on the planning and have many great sessions and speakers. For the new coach this is a must! If you know of a new coach, be sure to inform them that they must attend this important part of their training to be a strong and effective IHSSA coach. Plus, you will be able to earn credit again this year. Come to the convention and get 2 hours of credit. More about that on the IHSSA web site plus we will have the Official IHSSA convention guidebook app opening in late September.
f you would like a notice when SWIFT is new and posted please send us an e-mail and we will send an e-mail notice to you each time a new SWIFT is posted online. think we can all agree our IE or Large Group improv skills or spontanteous speaking skills were put to the test last year in our contest season. Whether you did in-person, vitural, or a combination of both you probably worked harder than you ever had worked before in doing IHSSA contest work. Yes, the year of IHSSA was unprecedented but the great thing was it still happened. WE HAD CONTEST when states all across the country were cancelling fine art events. We at the IHSSA found a safe way to make it happen for our students. You did it! You are still here, your school and students needed you and they need you again this coming year. Despite everything we had done, it was not a normal year and yet it was one of the best years that we have ever had in the IHSSA. More students experienced success in so many positive ways when everything around them was taken away. You as the IHSSA coach continued to provide a positive place for them to land. You made their lives fullfilled and provided hope and joy for so many. Going to the local school for contest was just what we needed in that time of hardships. It carried us through so many tough times. We enter a new contest season with challenges before us: professional, personal, and societal. However, I have great hope in what we together will accomplish this year. As the film Shawshank Redemption states, “Hope is a good thing, and maybe the best of things”. Let’s make that hope a reality this year.

SWIFT One of the best places to find out what the IHSSA Speech Coach needs to know is the montly publication SWIFT. The only place that publication is located is on the IHSSA website. Please be sure to take time to read SWIFT each month as there are many important items in each publication. One of the things we at the State Office hate to hear is, “I never knew that!”, when it had been in SWIFT for the last several months as a reminder. If you wish to receive a notification when SWIFT is new each month, please contact Deb (deb@ihssa) Robbins in the State Office and put ‘notification’ in the header of the email. In turn, the State Office will contact you with a notice to your email each time a new SWIFT is printed for your viewing.
IHSSA Fine Arts Administrator Award This award will be given to one Administrator at the Fall Convention. The award was developed by the IHSSA Executive Committee to recognize those administrators in Iowa who go above and beyond the call of duty for IHSSA. To receive this award an administrator must be nominated by their IHSSA coach. This nomination should be in letter form no longer than 2 pages and not less than 1. In the letter each coach should state the reasons why this administrator should be recognized as the IHSSA Fine Arts Administrator of the year. This person can be any administrator in your district ie: Supt., Principal, AD, Assistant Principal and so on. They also must be an active administrator at this time. Be sure to include details such as their position in your school district and examples of their work to make the IHSSA better in your school district. Deadline for application is September 27th. Letters of recommendation can be sent at this time to the IHSSA. Please indicate on the outside of the envelope that it is a nomination for IHSSA Fine Arts Administrator of the year. Be sure to honor those who have made your life better through their support!

Home of the Judge/Coaches Workshop & IHSSA State Offices (Craig was the only one at the office this year!) THANKS..... To all who attended the 28th Annual Judges/Coaches Workshop this August via the zoom meeting. Approximately 185 judges and coaches attended from across the state that day and several watching the video later. It was an informative and exciting day put together by the Judge Certification Committee. Gratitudes to the presenters for their wonderful contributions as workshop leaders. They were: Paul Yeager, IPTV Dennis Doyle, IHSSA Hall of Fame/Judge Jennifer Burton, IHSSA Judge Teresa Jackson, Iowa Central Community College Special Thanks to Jason Eslinger of the IGHSAU for his work in setting up this truly wonderful event. Of interest for the day - Paul Yeager was on his way to do work for IPVT at the Iowa State Fair and have a corn dog, Dennis Doyle and Jennifer Burton both did their presentations from out of State, and Teresa Jackson even performed for us and sang during her presentation. Talk about a group who really worked to make this happen for all of our judges. We had several comments that stated the morning treats at home were not as good as the ones you received when the workshop was in person. We can all work on that for the future. Thanks to the Judge Certification team of Mark Morehead, Gehlen Catholic; Dirk Waller, CB Abe Lincoln; Vince Hrasky, Tri-County; Lisa Phyfe, Waverly-Shell Rock; and Stacy Hansen, WDM Valley. Their work in putting together this positive event is outstanding. Please send suggestions to them or the State Office if you wish to have an area that you would like to see and hear about in 2022!
