Why is our world filled with violence? Why are our homes falling apart? Why is it that basketball, baseball, football, amusement parks, resorts, night clubs and movie theaters has the highest place in the lives of people today? Why does society today have to have the latest and the best? What is one of the main causes of societal breakdown today? James reveals to us the main causes and gives us a direct answer James 4:1-3. I. “even of your lusts” 2. James pinpoints one of the main causes of today’s societal breakdown. Pleasure. When reading James 4:1-3 note the repetition of you, ye, yours. Your lusts, ye lust, ye kill, ye desire to have, ye fight and war. All for lust or pleasure. II. “and desire to have. 1. The lure of pleasure was Satan's biggest appeal to Eve. When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired, (Genesis 3:6). James tells us so has he also lures the inhabitant of this final generation. III. “That ye may consume it upon your lusts. 2. Pleasure seeking has intoxicated the world today it has become the rule of life. James is speaking to a generation in which the society’s actions always have pleasure as its aim. The main thing is James 4:3, that ye may consume it upon your lusts (pleasure). In The King James version, the word LUST in verses 1 & 3 is translated pleasure. The Greek word is "hedone" hay-don-ay from which get the English word "hedonism." Webster defines hedonism as 1. The pursuit of pleasure as a matter of ethical principle. 2. An ethical system that evaluates the pursuit of pleasure as the highest good. Scripture identifies this type of philosophy as of demonic origin. James 3:15 1. Doesn't God want us to have pleasure? 1 Timothy 6:17 a. God want us to enjoy life but without forsaking the life giver. 2. Worldly pleasure produces in us thorny hearts. Luke 8:11, 14. 3. Many will forfeit the truth for pleasure. 2 Thess. 2:12 4. Scripture foretells that pleasure loving is a sign of the last days. 2 Timothy 3:1-2 5. In these last days Paul tells us there will public displays pleasure even sexually. 2 Peter 2:13, 14. a. Riot: truphe; to break up, enfeeble, the mind and body by indulgence; effeminacy, i.e. luxury, or debauchery. Paul is tell us we will see public acts of intemperance; effeminacy, sensuality, animalism, carnality; pleasure; luxuriousness; lap of pleasure, lap of luxury; free living. Debauchery wild gathering involving excessive drinking and promiscuity, fornication, adultery & nudity. 6. 7. 8.

Many enter in relationships that are pleasure driven. Judges 14:1-3; 16:1, 4 also read Gen. 6:1, 2. Pleasure lover are careless and selfish. Isaiah 47:8 What losses will come upon pleasure lovers? a. Financial. Proverbs 21:17 b. Children and spouses. Isaiah 47:8,9


c. The loss of life. James 5:5; 1 Tim 5:6 9. Pleasure loving and seeking is vain. Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 10. What is the source of true pleasure? a. True pleasure only comes from abiding with Christ. Psalm 16:11 b. True pleasure only comes through obedience. Job 36:11 11. And how long will the pleasure of this world last? Hebrews 11:24-26. 12. Can Christ deliver you from a pleasure loving hearts? Titus 3:3, 4.
