Web-project "VisualArtifacts.ru" was founded in 2004. The main goal of the project is to stimulate growth of street art movement by covering the russian scene, organizing events, competitions, festivals and collaborating with similar foreign projects. "Visual Artifacts" is one of the first internet projects, which covers street art culture in Russia and CIS countries. Materials published by artists on the site found the base of the project. The "Visual Artifacts" project expresses a subjective view of street art in Russia and CIS countries and in doesn’t pretend for any standartisation in graffitti or street art culture. In the projects future plans are not only evolution of street art, but also contemporary art: street art, painting, music, architecture, design and so on.

BLU INTERVIEW For the ones that walked the streets of Bologna, Blu needs no presentation. (For the ones that don’t check: his funky website: http://www.blublu.org) He’s almost everywhere, and his pieces pop up like no other even the non-writes notice them. The judge its up to you, from his words but even more from his works. You’re really good at drawing, you could have been a traditional artist, why do you bomb that much? Lounge artist is a job like an other, but other works looks like more attractive to me. By now I bomb a lot because I like it, because I want to communicate to the people, in the street and I want to see the reaction of the ones who observe my works. Are you gonna storm the art market first or later? Or right now? Sometimes I hold some little show, yet I never thought about doing “art works” that could be sold, I always preferred doing walls or big surfaces, hard to sell in the art market. However I often realize some work made to order and that’s good

for my finance. What’s the ultimate scope of your street works? Street fame? The expression of a political thought? I haven’t got an ultimate scope nor a secret plan to accomplish. More than “street fame” we could call it “internet fame”. As a general fact, I’m not interested in getting fame, I’m more interested in not dying by “fame” (Italian word for staving), that is making some money. Regarding the expression of a political thought, I think that’s something that naturally happens whenever you paint a wall, the fact itself that you’re painting it is the expression of a thought. I’m not drawing scythes and hammers, nor Celtics crosses and I don’t trust the puppet politicians that run our country. Every drawing that I paint expresses a thought. So, it happens that my characters point at social subjects, cause very often I’m thinking about our crazy society. Do you think graffiti writing has a political meaning, in a wide sense? Every action that we perform has a political meaning, because it has

an effect on the society we live in, so painting a graffiti too has a political meaning. Even if graffiti writing has been referred as a close circle, understandable only to the insiders, really it is a very strong communicative act, because its public spaces that have been painted (trains, walls, and so on) and many people see the pieces, maybe they don’t even understand what’s written, but they can understand well the colors, the shapes and the palce, and they can have a thought themselves on what they see. Many times I’ve seen babies really happy for the painted trains, while the mums were angry and disgusted by the “devastation of a public good”. The world-renowned international charitable art-festival named CowParade finally comes to Moscow! The much anticipated event will take place in August October, 2005, when hundreds of life-sized fiber-glass Cows painted and decorated with various designs will be placed on the streets of the city historical centre for public observation. The bovines best liked by Muscovites and city guests will be sold by one of the best international auction houses at a live auction with the proceeds donated to children charities. This is what CowParade is all about: art, charity, festival!

Graffiti art is constantly changing. Fresh coats of paint and newly pasted posters appear overnight in cities across the world. New artists, new ideas, and new tactics displace faded images in a perpetual process of renewal and metamorphosis. From Los Angeles to Barcelona, Stockholm to Tokyo, Melbourne to Milan, wall spaces are a breeding ground for graphic and typographic forms as artists unleash their daily creations. Current graffiti art is reflective of the world around it. Using new materials and techniques, its innovators are creating a language of forms and images infused with contemporary graphic design and illustration. Fluent in branding and graphic imagery, they have been replacing tags with more personal logos and shifting from typographic to iconographic forms of communication.

“Street Logos” is a worldwide celebration of these new developments in twenty-first-century graffiti, an essential sourcebook for all art and design professionals, and a delight to everyone excited by the vitality of the street.
