A Note from IFES President Bruno Meissner Dear friends, dear fellow IFESians!

ersonally, I wish you all a successful, happy, healthy and prosperous new year 2014. I wish your year may be full of positive business opportunities, new networking connections and innovative fresh thoughts for your company developments. Just recently I came across again an old but still helpful strategic rule: Take the high ground – stay in touch – and keep moving! This immediately reminded me of what we have to do in IFES and what is ahead of us this year! Take the high ground: For sure this is not the time to be complacent. We all are experiencing a lot of changes in our markets and business environments. Every one of us has his/her own ideas how to deal with it. The more we unite the stronger we will become as a group and as entrepreneurs and companies. Stay in touch: There will be a number of events for IFESians to stay in touch this year. The first opportunity will be EUROSHOP! Come and meet your IFES colleagues in Düsseldorf between February 16th to 20th in hall 9 at stand F 74 and F 78. On February 18th, there will be an international evening in the hall organized by IFES, EDPA and FAMAB. The second opportunity will be the UFI Operations Focus Meeting in Poznan on April 10th. As IFES members you are invited to attend this interesting meeting and, in the evening, we are planning an IFES-Networking-Dinner. The third opportunity will be your obligatory attendance to the IFES World Summit 2014 in New Delhi from May 29th to 31st and the IFES AGM 2014 on Friday, May 30th . And keep moving! Many of you will remember Bob Dylan’s song which ended “…and the first one now will later be last, for the times they are a-changin’!” Therefore: let us keep moving together, sharing knowledge, globally networking and internationally helping us making sustainable business. Hope to see you all soon! Bruno Meissner IFES President

Taking Scope: 2014

would like to take this opportunity, to wish you a very Happy New Year and all the best for 2014, and share with you some of the activities and achievements we have accomplished these past few months at IFES and how and what we plan to continue with your support and effort in 2014. As you might already be aware, (or are even a proud sponsor by now) – 2014 is the year of EUROSHOP! I am delighted to say that this year promises to be one of the best EUROSHOP presentations IFES has ever had, and that the activities and networking possibilities which are being planned, will allow for those of you attending, experience something beyond our motto of “sharing knowledge, global network and international collaboration”. Our booth not only will be an eye catching one in which you will be able to share your ideas and businesses, but for those of you which have gratefully contributed by selecting one of our sponsorship

packages, you will have the opportunity to have your company’s visibility increased in one way or another. This Theodorides unique opportunity, which Peter Marketing & Public has proven to work so Relations Committee Chair successfully in the past, is now on its final preparation phase. If you have not received or have had a chance to read the sponsorship packages which we have prepared for you, take the time to visit our website or contact Gloria or me, and we will gladly discuss or prepare an “a la carte” package for your company’s visibility. Even better, take the time and see how you can benefit by having your own branded lounge room on the booth for a day or more, and bring your clients or fellow members and discuss the advantages that IFES can offer continued on page 6

The Value of IFES Membership

January 2014, Issue 1

The world is getting smaller, and the markets growing larger. Business life is not like it used to be. Welcome to the new world of marketing! Face to face tradeshow marketing provides the greatest impact for new business opportunities for the clients we now serve.

n the world of marketing, many exhibit companies do well enough by limiting their customer reach and only serve customers in their local market. Some companies have determined that serving their clients within their own country and immediate borders is all the business reach they need. This strategy is perfectly ok. It is simple and keeps business risks to a minimum. For those who have now expanded to offer their products and services worldwide, business becomes a bit more complex, but it sure can increase revenue and profits. For exhibit supplier companies, their existing tradeshow customers now ask that they assist them worldwide and offer the same services they have offered within their home boundaries. If you cannot accommodate their request to serve them globally, they will find someone else who can. For all exhibit companies who do not venture beyond their borders, and fear they do not have the navigational skills to satisfy their customer expectations outside of their region, IFES is for you. Supplier recommendations from friends and colleges really can help, but does not always provide enough. Fear not, it’s not what you know, but who you know that will save you best. Different customs, languages, shipping IFES, founded in 1984 as fees, and different labor rules and regulations at the International Federation expo halls all become of Exhibition and Event roadblocks to success Services, started as a small if you are not familiar with what to expect. association and has become After doing several a global organization now shows at different cities in the world you quickly representing 40 countries. become confident and are now the expert that your client is expecting you to be. But, one fatal misstep can blow your client trust in a hurry. Fear not exhibit suppliers, IFES is here to be your ‘seeing eye’ dog to guide you through your journey in unfamiliar territories. You need not go it alone and figure it out for yourself if you have an IFES partner. Be careful about people, or companies, that say they are a tradeshow expert everywhere in the world. This is not true. No one person or company is an expert everywhere. Major trade fair locations are rapidly changing each year. About the time that you thought your skills and contacts in Munich, Paris, Shanghai, Chicago, and Dubai were honed in a trusted relationship, your client now elects to attend shows in Puerto Rico, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Beirut, Manila, Bucharest, and Key West. The IFES network of partners will help you find the best trusted suppliers. All IFES members

are voted in as professionals and are required to sign a Code of Conduct regarding payment terms, non-compete, and professional behavior. Recommendations are quickly provided upon request. A rapid response time and fair price are a must. The IFES concept began with a question posed Larry Kulchawik, between a Belgian and a French stand contractor: Former IFES President “Do you have the same challenges to serve your clients in your country as we have in our country?” From this discussion, French contractor Roger Taurant took the initiative to invite a few responsible exhibit supplier associations from different countries to meet around a great idea: “uniting the players within the European expo service industry under a global umbrella.” On the 19th October 1984 at the International Meeting of Designers and Decorators of Stands, the decision was taken to create an international federation for the exposition industry. IFES started with six European countries and has quickly grown to represent 40 countries from each of the seven regions of the world. What started as a small group of exhibit supplier associations (a federation) has now grown its reach, to include direct membership for exhibit suppliers and their associations to now serve exhibitors anywhere in the world. In the last five years IFES has greatly expanded its reach. IFES president, Bruno Meissner (Germany), has led the charge with an ambitious board of country experts. “Much has been accomplished, but there is more yet to be done”, says Bruno Meissner. IFES is now truly represented worldwide in each of the seven world regions, and is an active member of many other global expo associations.

So you might ask, why join IFES and what value is it to me? • Face to face meetings with member companies at the annual IFES Global Summit, Exhibitor Show, and Euroshop to build relationships • Information, statistics, labor regulations on expo locations in the world • Direct access to country associations in the expo industry • Source for trusted partners outside of your region • Save your customer money when contracting locally for all services • Being a part of a trusted brand and community of partners Visit the IFES management team at one of these three upcoming events in 2014: • IFES pavilion at EuroShop: February 16-20, 2014 in Dusseldorf • IFES stand at the Exhibitor Show: March 17-20, 2014 in Las Vegas • IFES Global Summit: May 30, 2014 in Delhi, India

For members who would like to recommend companies for IFES membership: The form is now electronically available online.

Swiss Association: Labour Laws in Exhibition Halls

ccording to the Swiss Federal Act on Employees Sent to Switzerland (SR 823.20), foreign employers who send employees to Switzerland for a limited period of time in order to carry out work must guarantee these employees at least the working and wage conditions that are laid down for Switzerland by federal legislation, ordances of the Swiss Federal Council, collective agreements that have been declared to be generally binding, and normal contracts of employment. On 24 April 2012, the Swiss national government declared that the Collective Agreement for the Carpentry Trade would be

generally binding, this agreement includes exhibition stand construction. The conditions and provisions for the carpentry trade that have been negotiated by the two sides of industry are now binding, in the same way as a law, on all exhibition stand constructors who have their head office in Switzerland, and also on all foreign exhibition stand constructors who engage in stand construction work in German-speaking Switzerland. The provisions relate, in particular, to minimum wages, wage supplements for evening, night and Sunday work, working hours and rest periods, overtime, wages if employees are prevented from working, reimbursement of

expenses, compensation for holidays and public holidays, occupational safety, and protection of health at the workplace. See this link for specific provisions, including the annotations (in German and Italian). Further provisions relate to: • Joint and several liability of main contractor • Notification duties of the foreign employer • Proof of self-employment • Checks and sanctions Further information:
