PRESIDENT ELECTION NOMINATIONS Dear Flying Dutchman Class members! As you all know Tony Lyall did step down as the President of the class at the AGCM in Medemblik. The process for a new nomination was opened on the 25th of January 2018. As no nominations came in until the 1st of April we silently waited for new ones. At the AGCM in Medemblik we still hadn‘t received any. As we do not currently have a President Meike Greten -Secretary- and Peter van Koppen -Treasurer- take over the tasks of the President ad interim. Therefore it was decided at the AGCM to open a new period of six months as required for nominations starting the 1st of january 2019. So please feel free to nominate any proper candidate who you think is the best person to be the new President of the IFDCO. We also would like any prepositions for the position of the Treasurer. Eventually in the case of enough support Peter van Koppen would be willing to fill in the position of President. If so we must find a new Treasurer. Zsofia Csanda stepped down as the boat registrar at the end of September. Tony Lyall is willing to take over this position. According the byelaws the Executice Commitee will finalize this at the next AGCM. Please be aware of the following procedure for the nominations for these positions which must be in accordance with our Byelaws as follows with comments in brackets.

6

PRESIDENT ELECTION

6.6.5 Nominations for appointments to the Executive Committee shall be made in writing to the General Secretary at least three months before the commencement of an AGCM. Each nomination shall be proposed by five IFDCO members from at least three countries and shall indicate that the person nominated has confirmed their willingness to serve in accordance with the Byelaws. 6.6.6 On receipt of a valid nomination to fill a vacancy of the Executive committee, the General Secretary shall post a notice on the IFDCO website, together with a short Curriculum Vitae supplied by the nominee. Within one month the General Secretary shall notify the IFDCO membership of a vote together with a deadline one month later, and shall then tally the vote and post the results prior to the AGCM. „When an election is required by the Byelaws is it to be conducted and concluded by a vote of all current IFDCO members present at the competitors meeting. The IFDCO General Secretary will act as the returning officer for the election and will advise general Committee of the result. The General Committee shall then appoint the new members of the General Committee in accordance with the IFDCO Foundation Rules.

6.6.10 The president shall have been an active FD sailor and or a member of the General Committee with a continued interest in attending FD regattas and representing the class at World Sailing. All nominations along with the correct numbers of proposers must be received by the General Secretary Meike Greten (generalsecretary@sailifdco.net) not later than 1st of July 2019! Best regards MEIKE GRETEN PETER VAN KOPPEN

At any election a member may hold up to five proxies from other IFDCO members. Any such proxy shall be in writing and include endorsement from their National Secretary that all such proxies are from current IFDCO members with a valid and current membership card.“ (amended AGCM 26th May 2013)

AUSTRIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

INTERNATIONAL AUSTRIAN CHAMPIONS 2018 JIRI HRUBY AND ROMAN HOUDEK

EuroCup Achensee AUT 17.08.– 19.08.2018 From a sailing point of view and for the many families who travelled with them, this was a fantastic weekend at the SCTWV on the Achensee: high summer temperatures and good thermal wind conditions as well as a comprehensive supporting programme attracted 37 boats from seven nations to this year‘s international Austrian State Championship of the Flying Dutchman Class - thus the largest sailing regatta on the Achensee and one of the most strongly attended international FD regattas. The strong international field comes to the Tiroler Bergsee every year, especially because of the good thermal wind conditions known far beyond the borders of the country, which inspire both sailors and companions with the fantastic panorama. And on this weekend the Achensee showed its best side. On Friday, race leader Georg Wietzorrek was able to start the series punctually after inspecting the sails when the north wind set in. The local heroes Christoph Aichholzer and

16

ACHENSEE AUT

17

Philipp Zingerle took the lead after four exciting and close races on Friday with two first and two third places. On Saturday, four more races were sailed in the afternoon under similar conditions. For the Tyroleans this day didn‘t quite go according to plan and they had to give the lead to the sovereign sailing Czechs Jiri Hruby and Roman Houdek, who were allowed to take home the overall standings and thus the Karwendelcup. The Austrian national championship at the SCTWV Achensee is part of the top-class European Cup series, but the Tyrolean championship will also be decided at the same time.

18

With a total of five boats, the Tyrolean sailors represent the strongest Flying Dutchman fleet in Austria and also occupy the first two places in the state championship classification with AUT 38 - Christoph Aichholzer / Philipp Zingerle - and AUT 39 - Martin Pfund / Christoph Zingerle. The bronze medal went to AUT 15 - Gerhard and Rainer Ulrich from SCK. It is also remarkable that Ute Wagner and Paul Hullenaar were able to win the bronze medal in the Tyrolean Championship in their first FD regatta. There is also a lot of work going on for the next generation, because the class association provides a complete regatta boat for one team every year for free - which Jakob and Maria Koch have sailed the whole season!

ACHENSEE AUT Since the series was already finished on Saturday evening after 8 sailed races, the participants could enjoy the barbecue evening and the cocktail party in the boathouse until late into the night, drink to their successes and discuss the regatta days in detail - or simply rock the boathouse! The Bioagra Flying Dutchman Polish Championship is behind us. This year we met on the Nysa Lake District. Traditionally, the international cast of the event was provided by more and more Czech crews coming in, we also hosted one crew from Germany and Hungary. A total of 25 boats was at the start of the event. Class in Poland is developing and MPs are attracting more and more foreign crews.

On Friday and Saturday 7 races were launched, unfortunately there was no wind on Sunday. The event was classified in two categories: international and domestic. This year the regatta was supported by the BIOAGRA company, which became the title sponsor of the event.

MARINA PREIS TORBOLE 23.08. – 25.08.2018

H A PPY FA CE S AF T E R E A RLY M T R A INING ORNING WIT H HE A V Y WIND

Fresh wind in Torbole. Roland Kirst, multiple Marina Preis winner always says: “Actually the FD was built for Lake Garda”. And indeed, the FDs and Lake Garda, especially Trobole, are closely connected. Nevertheless, the relationship between CVT and the FD fleet has continued to cool in recent years and certainly reached its low point in 2017, so that the fleet loudly thought about finding a new home for the Marina Preis, which was held over many decades in the CVT. But there is a new wind blowing in the CVT and the club is making a noticeable effort not only to welcome the FD fleet, but also to hold a great event on the water and on land so that the FDs feel really comfortable again. A total of 26 boats from 7 nations were certainly at the start due to the reduced starting fee, which also marked an about-turn on the part of the FD fleet. The new race manager Sylvain Notonier organized the races on the water and on land in a really exemplary way. Renata and the Gastro-Crew looked after the many sailors and the whole team in the best way. Also former president Gianfranco Tonelli underlined the long and deep solidarity with the FD fleet at the award ceremony and made it clear with the announcement to apply for the FD WORLDS 2021. In any case, he had the applause of the FD sailors present. On the water the experienced race committee provided for 6 beautiful, but not always easy races, because over 3 days thunderstorms disturbed the Ora again and again. Hans-Peter Schwarz and Roland Kirst won again. Obviously Roland is also made for Lake Garda, as is the FD. MARC STRITTMATTER GER172 PS: In the meantime, IFDCO has received the first informal CVT application for the FD WORLDS 2021. We are looking forward to the decision. 24

ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP GATEA 06.09. – 09.09.2018

The Italian Flying Dutchman Class Championship was held in the waters of Gaeta from 6 to 9 September 2018. The competition, organized by the hospitable Yacht Club Gaeta in collaboration with the Italian Flying Dutchman Class and the magnificent choreography of the Gulf of Gaeta, saw the participation of 24 Italian, Swiss, Hungarian and Slovenian crews.

silver medal went to the ITA 94 Eustachi Pierfrancesco and Paolo Rossi crew, who proved to be competitive and fast throughout the 2018 season, so as to win the 2018 Italian Ranking List, awarded on average of the results achieved in all the races on the calendar. The ITA 7 crew, Alberto Barenghi and Gabor Koles, won the bronze medal with regular placements and winning the last race, confirming the results of last year.

The race course was very interesting and complex, characterized by good weather, irregular wind jumps and wind intensity from 8 to 15 knots, mainly from West, South-West. The meteorological peculiarities of the Gulf of Gaeta made the 7 races held for the award of the Italian title, exciting for the alternation of the first five crews on the edges of each race, thus making the Championship open until the last race.

All the participating crews had fun during these three days racing in the waters of the Gulf of Gaeta, which offered beautiful wind conditions and hospitality. Thanks go to the Yacht Club Gaeta EVS in the person of Costanzo Villa, who gave his contribution by being part of the Race Committee, and the head of the Nautical Base Flavio Gioia Luca Simeone. Thanks also to the Regatta Committee, which has been able to carry out some very good tests in these three days.

After the 7 races, the ITA 4 crew of brothers Nicola and Francesco Vespasiani, who had already finished third at the World Championship held in July at Medemblik in Holland, won the title of Italian Champion. The

HUNGARIAN FLYING DUTCHMAN CHAMPIONSHIP 1 4. – 16.09.2018 LAKE BALATON

27

28

HUN

The FD Hungarian Championship 2018 has been held to Balatonfoldvar on last 14 -16 September.

Finally, the wind didn’t appear on Sunday, so the Hungarian Championship has been awarded after 4 races, without discard.

At the competition, organized by the prestigious Spartacus Sailing Club, attended 11 teams, coming from Hungary, Croatia, Czech Republic, Italy and Poland. The beautiful hospitality and the friendly atmosphere expressed by the FD Hungarian Class and the Spartacus Sailing Club welcome and gladden all the foreign sailors.

Winner of all the races and of the Hungarian Championship have been the team Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos (HUN – 70). The silver medal has been awarded to the team Jiry Hruby – Roman Houdek (CZI – 21), also winner of the last Polish Championship and sailing with a new FD. The bronze medal has been awarded to the Italian / Hungarian team Alberto Barenghi – Gabor Koles, recently classified 3° overall at the Italian Championship.

On Friday, the expected thermal wind from East, blew only irregularly and temporarely, so the Race Committee has been obliged to suspend the race, after 75 minutes. Such a weather condition induced the Race Committee to concentrate 4 races on Saturday ; the course was a well done Olympic triangle, where the wind blew from North, North . West, 7 – 16 knots.

All the three teams on the podium sailed by a FD designed by Luca Ungaro and built by his Plana Tech yard.

Now, the season is going on to finish in our hemisphere, but the Europeans teams are ready to ship their boats to Nelson (New Zealand), where the 2019 season will begin with the World Championship, on next February. Remarkable is that the 2019 FD sailing season will include also the European Championship that will be held to the Spartacus Sailing Club in Balatonfoldvar, on next September. We wish all the FD sailor a beautiful sailing season 2019 and welcome them to the next European Championship in Balatonfoldvar. ALBERTO BARENGHI ITA7

INTERNATIONAL GERMAN CHAMPIONSHIP, BERLIN 06.09. – 09.09.

IDM GER

The Berlin Yacht Club with its brand-new clubhouse and the very well-kept outdoor facilities is already a very impressive setting for an IDM 2018. It was all the more pleasing how hospitable, relaxed and relaxed the members received the FD fleet when the 38 crews with boats, motorhomes and equipment spread out on the club grounds. The excellent hospitality on land certainly helped to calm the nerves of the sailors, who were challenged on the water, because all 6 races were challenges in themselves: strong turns, gusts here and there, and really big tugboats and other professional shipping that crossed the regatta lanes. The results of the title favourites were accordingly mixed. However, the father/son team Markus and Joshua von Lepel could really convince on their home waters with 3 first places and became deserved International German Champion 2018. The only downer was again that not a single boat from the neighbouring nations made it to an IDM in the east of Germany. Too bad! It could not have been due to the quality of the event on the water or on land. Marc GER172

EUROCUP

CZECH CHAMPIONSHIP NECHRANICE 21.09. – 23.09.2018

41

42

CZE

With truly remarkable energy, Petr Storch and the Czech Class Association have been working for several years to turn a rather small national championship into a first-class international FD event. The very good organisation and the eager promotion of the two teams CZE11 and CZE21 on many international regattas have paid off. 32 boats of the almost 40 registered boats from 7 (sic!) nations have made their way to the starting line for 6 strenuous strong wind races this year. On Friday the peloton had to wait until the early afternoon for wind in the tough late summer heat, which then came all the more violent with a low-pressure area from the west and in the evening increased into a spectacular thunderstorm with black thunderclouds, black dust

clouds from the nearby brown coal opencast mine and wind up to 8 bft. Unfortunately, not all boats made it ashore undamaged and for two boats a defective stern meant the premature end. On Saturday there were then 4 more full races with 4 to 6 wind forces and thank God a big lunch break with a proper snack buffet of Petrs Mrs. Blanka. So much sailing with so much wind was certainly not expected on a reservoir in northern Bohemia. The fact that there were no more races on Sunday due to the lack of wind certainly didn‘t disappoint many.

in this list. On the 2nd place followed EuroCup winner 2018 Alex Antrecht and Christian Kujan and on the 3rd place the Swiss SUI1 Stefan Fels and Ulf Hügel.

As before, this championship was won by the Polish and Austrian CZE 21 Jiri Hruby and Roman Houdek. The fact that they also became Hungarian runner-up must also be mentioned

A great event, Petr! Chapeau! I‘ll be back!

With the FD sailing and a national championship in the Czech Republic you really mean it. It starts with the ceremonial opening and closing ceremony, an extremely professional race committee, a never-ending free beer, an extraordinary hospitality and a national TV coverage.

AUSTRALIA

THE EARLY 2019 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS CAIN CURRAN NOVEMBER 2018. The Championships were held early so that the boats can be packed and sent to New Zealand for the World championships in February 2019. The venue was the Cain Curran Sailing Club in central Victoria and the small country club and volunteers who ran the regatta did an outstanding job both on and off the water. Sailing was held in moderate winds from the South for the first two days and then from the North on the final day of racing. Wind strength ranged from 12 to 18 knots and was both very gusty and shifty making sailing quite difficult and there were a number of genoa back winding capsizes with the huge and sudden shifts. In fact every boat had a least one swim! It was Mark Henger and Mathew Bismark sailing under the “All Black” colour’s of New Zealand in an Australian build boat by Mark and previous owner Stewart Edgar who dominated the regatta winning six of the eight races. Congratulations to them. Second place went to Peter Bartell’s and Darren Hocking who had a string of second placing’s and one win. Third place and I think first time on the podium went to Mathew Moore and Neil Kafer sailing consistently and fast. Fourth place went to veterans and class stalwarts Ian McCrossin and James Cook. David Ham and Mike Greenhalgh finished a much improved clawing their way back fifth overall. While the fleet was only small this year partly due to the time of year this regatta had to be held we had some good close racing and enjoyed the hospitality of the Cain Curran Sailing Club. Thankyou to “Hocko” for organizing the event. Also wishing our Australian President Colin McLeod a speedy recovery from recent illness preventing him from sailing. We hope to have eight boats going to New Zealand for the World Championships in February. David Ham
