Dear FD sailors and friends of the world’s finest and fastest regatta dinghy, a very eventful season with a very large and tremendous World Championship as well as many regattas and championships now lies behind us. We report for the first time herein about all the championships as well as being successful in obtaining images from almost all championships and publishing them within these pages. In addition, apart from few exceptions, we now have dates for national championships for 2017 and for the world championships in 2018 and 2019. Both by active participants as well as from behind the scenes, much has been achieved: We have however discontinued the FD Forum, which Sjors Riemslag and his team maintained with great ambition and much, much effort for many years. In the name of the entire active FD world, we express our sincere gratitude for all your commitment! At the same time we have launched a facebook presence at www.facebook.com/sailifdco/ and set up a marketplace at sailifdco.com. These two matters and several other things besides are being managed by a young crew from Lake Ammer, Bavaria: Tim Wechsler and Benedikt Nagel of GER 90. Many thanks for all your support to you two as well. If anyone wishes to find out more about this crew, please read the report on the Steinhude World Championship.
For several years Philipp Zingerle, AUT 38, has been producing a really fine FD calendar. Now Philipp and I have designed the 2017 calendar together and shall publish it in the name of IFDCO. You can order a copy at info@sailifdco.com for €10.00 plus postage. Proceeds from calendar sales will benefit a new generation of FD sailors: All proceeds from this year will be invested in the Austrian FD class promotional boat. If this project is a success, we shall sponsor further FD class promotional boats in the coming years or junior teams of smaller FD classes. And we shall also make copies of the calendar available to smaller international classes in support of their promotional work. So that’s almost all for 2017. Enjoy your read, and good luck with planning the current and coming season! MARC STRITTMATTER Vice President Communications IFDCO

President‘s Letters
Dear Fellow FD Sailors! It seems so long ago now where as in fact it was only 5 months ago that the class gathered in Steinhude for our 2016 World Championships. With 113 boats from 15 countries it was one of the largest fleets in we’ve had in the post-Olympic era. It proved to be a fantastic event both on & off the water. As a spectator on the water, there appeared to be some great competitive racing all the way down the fleet with many changes in position throughout all the races. The challenging and sometimes unpredictable winds ‘throwing’ up some unexpected results but that’s one of the attractions of sail boat racing! Congratulations to Jǿrgen & Jacob Bojsen-Mǿller who once again stood on the top step of the podium as World Champions Hannover Yacht Club did a fantastic and our thanks go to all on the organising team, the club officials & the members for all their hard work in helping to make it such a successful event. Elsewhere, once again it’s been another great season with so many fantastic events around the World. One thing I’m encouraged by is the increased number of competitors that are travelling to regattas and Championships organised by their ‘neighbouring’ countries. It is essential for the countries with the smaller fleets that we continue to support them in this way. It’s therefore important that National Secretaries communicate with each other when planning their championships and big regattas so as to avoid a ‘clash’ of dates. Something new for 2017, Marc is planning on producing a worldwide Regatta calendar for the year so can I ask all National Secretaries to send him dates of all their major events as soon as they are known. For me the most satisfying and pleasing thing I’ve seen this season is the big increase in the number of youth teams racing the FD. There is no doubt this is in part due to the ‘promo’ boats in Austria, Holland and especially in Germany. I realise that not every country has the resources to do the same thing but we now have a strong
4
nucleus of young teams on which to build, so IFDCO and the National Class Organisations both need to think of other ways to get young people sailing in our lovely boat. I was still as school when I had my first sail in an FD, and it’s only because the teachers and members at the club took the time to encouraged and supported me that I was able to buy my first boat and now here I am 45 years later still passionate about everything FD. So here is my Presidential challenge for 2017, let’s see if every country that has 10 or more boats, can attract a new team of young people where the combined age of both helm and crew is under 40 years of age. If you succeed please let us know. Just to remind you, our 2017 World Championships will be in Scarlino, Italy from the 22nd – 20th September. It’s a beautiful venue and I’m confident it will be a great event so let’s try and get a big ‘turn out’ from as many countries and continents as we can. It was with great sadness that I heard of the recent death of Ulrich Schafers. Ulli as he was known to us all in the ‘dinghy park’ with his fleet of boats carrying the Commodore name and distinctive GER 111 personal sail number. He was real character always smiling, friendly and willing to make the time to have a chat and a laugh, often of course over the obligatory beer or two. His long association with the Flying Dutchman started back in 1968 and over the years Ulli has been an ardent supporter of the Class and was a regular competitor at so many regattas and championships around the World. To me Ulli was not only a fellow competitor but a friend and I’m sure he will be greatly missed by all those that knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Hannelore, children Anke & Kai and the rest of his family during these difficult times. Just as this season in drawing to an end in Europe so does this article, hopefully I will be fully recovered & sailing again in time for the start of next season, so hope to see many of you again next year. Tony LYALL President IFDCO
Half Model
It gave me great pleasure at the prize giving in Steinhude to present a half model to two former members of the General Committee in recognition of their outstanding service. First was to Fred Schaaf who served as Class Treasurer for 9 years, and the second to John Best who stood down as Chief Measurer after the Worlds in Steinhude having held the position since 2006. Four other worthy recipients will be presented with their awards at the earliest opportunity, they are Peter Hinrichsen who’s served on the General Committee for over 20 years, firstly as North American Commodore going onto to become VP Technical & Chief Measurer, Stephen Parry for 18 years as VP Championships, Peter Doran who was our General Secretary for 12 years and last but by no means least Alberto Barenghi who before becoming our President for 14 years first served on the General Committee as Mediterranean Commodore for 18 months. Each half model is hand made by FD sailors from Tegernsee in Bavaria. The hull form is based on Trophy first presented to Muxl’s father in the 1960’s. The Black/Silver ones are to be present to host clubs and used as prizes. They will also be available to purchase at a cost of 150 Euro each plus package & postage. The limited edition gold versions are reserved for those that have given distinguished service to IFDCO. So a very big thank you must go to Marc, Paul & Muxl for designing and making these wonderful trophies and as you can see from the photos they look just great. TONY LYALL President IFDCO

TOP 6 President‘s Report The President Tony Lyall presented his ‘bucket’ list of things he wanted to achieve as President of the IFDCO • be more transparent, open and democratic about our decision making • improve communication with National Class Orga nisations & members etc. • be more accountable financially • to have an accurate & up to date annual Internati onal Membership list • to increase the number of young people entering the class • attract a major Class sponsor The decline in active sailors and in particular the fall in the number of sailors/teams attending regattas and championships in several countries for instance GBR & USA is a real concern and something we on the GC need to be aware of and act upon accordingly. It’s great to see that we have a nucleus of young sailors joining the class. The group from Germany is very enthusiastic and we need to encourage and support them whilst at the same time working with other countries to follow their ‘lead’ as they are the future of the Class. The President’s Report of Tony Lyall was adopted. TOP 7 General Secretary Report There is no report from the General Secretary, it is the same as in the last Bulletin.
TOP 8 Treasurers Report Fees: • It is important to inform the sailors what the IFDCO does with the fees for the class. The IFDCO needs to act more transparent. • The FD class organization has a low fee compared to other classes. • The dues were put up in 2014 from 20 to 25 € and in 2015 from 25 to 30 €. A goal for increase of membership dues is the support of younger sailors and a new measurer trailer. • Decision was made to leave membership subscrip tion fee in 2017 as it is (30 €). Trademark : • The IFDCO has a trademark. Peter van Koppen will talk to Alberto Barenghi about the background (why, what, payment, bill). The intention was once to get better sponsors. • Decision was made to stop the trademark effort because the class doesn’t get better sponsors. The Treasurers Report of Peter van Koppen was adopted.
TOP 9 Accounts for year 2015 The Accounts were shown and explained by Peter van Koppen.
TOP 10 Update on 2016 to date -
TOP 11 Proposed Budget for 2017 The budget for 2017 will be proposed later in 2016.

TOP 12 Sub-Committee Reports i. Technical Sail numbers and country markings from spinnakers were eliminated to allow easier sale of spis since the numbers are normally stenciled. There was a request for reducing weight of the mast. Decision was made not to reduce the weight of the mast, keep it at 8.5 kg and ask the manufacturer to reinforcements in spreader, gooseneck and deck area. There was a request for changing the sail fabrics to maylan mail sails. Decision was made that there won’t be a change in sail fabrics for the FD class. The Technical Committee Report from Paul Hemker was adoped. ii. The IFDCO realized a net result of -947 € in 2015. The reason for the higher costs are the travel costs and container grants for the Worlds outside Europe and the investment in a video trailer. The IFDCO has currently about 72.000 € in the bank. The Finance Report of Peter van Koppen was adopted. v. Championship including future Championship Jan Lechler reported that he had a written contract with Russia for the Worlds 2017 in St. Petersburg where all points were very clear. In March this year, their problems got bigger and bigger with money and support of the Russia Sailing Federation. The project was stopped. 9
New bids to host the World Championship 2017 were received from Spain (Altea), Portugal (Tavira) and USA (St. Petersburg) and an updated bit from Italy (Scalino, who wanted to host the Worlds in 2018 first). Resposible is the national secretary.
i. Australia & New Zealand In Australia are 20 FDs of which 10 are sailing. New boats are build and imported. ii. Germany The class in Germany has grown with around 20 new sailors because of the Worlds. Germany had 2 promo boats, one has been sold because of the costs. Tom Greten asked to be more than careful with technical changes in the future to protect the existing members of the class. iii. Italy No representative in the meeting. iv. Nederland The Netherlands have 95 members of which 60 are IFDCO members. These are constant numbers. At championships 30 boats are starting, normal regattas are sailed with an average of 10 boats. There are 2 promo boats. At the annual meeting 50 members are around. The class is active but needs bigger numbers. Every 10 years there is a World Championship in The Netherlands for which the national FD organizations holds back money. Next one could be 2018 or 2019 in Medemblik.

TOP 20 Close of the meeting The Annual General Committee Meetings ends at 19:45. 11
On recent 17, 18, and 19 of March was held in Altea the 2016 Euroflying. At this edition a total of 15 sailing boats from three different countries were present. Eight from Germany, five from Spain and two Portuguese. First day we had sunny weather throughout the day. East winds ranging from 6 to 8 knots allowed three races in which GER-88, with its brand new PlanaTech, started to show its supremacy, although closely followed by GER 113 and GER 30. In the evening, the Altea Nautic Club offered to the participants a fantastic dinner of regional products. On the second day we had a partially clouded day with winds from the South between 4 and 6 knots. Two races were held dominated by GER 30 with first and second positions. Rest of the fleet navigated very closely to each other having a very competed race. Last day of competition was affected by cloudy bad weather and scattered rains. There were weak winds from South and two races disputed were won by GER 88. Along with the Euroflying was disputed as well the Spanish Cup which was won by ESP 69. We would like to thank once again to the German and Portuguese fleets for coming to Spain to compete in the Euroflying and spend some days with us. We look forward to meeting you again next year! It was once again a really big World Championship with many more than 100 boats. Quite some time before the event, it was already being considered how to get so many boats rapidly enough through the measurement points, and we learnt that it is really quite easy. The only requirements are to have at one’s disposal sufficient space, a good plan and a well-briefed team. Sufficient space on land was also certainly available, thanks to the cooperation of the HYC with its very hospitable neighbouring clubs. Very varied races with very divergent wind and weather
16
conditions, and thanks to two starting areas – always sufficient room at the starting line and along the racecourse. An enormous event with many, many guests! The HYC team has shown how it’s done! And with Jörgen and Jacob Bojsen-Møller we have well-deserved and worthy world champions. In second place GER 88 Kay-Uwe Lütdke with Kai Schäfers led ahead of GER 113 Kilian König and Johannes Brack. Among many favourable and remarkable events during this world championship was also the fact that the FD class is also currently quite attractive for many young sailors
and teams. In fact 12 sailors under 25 had applied for and received a Youth Grant from the IFDCO providing financial support for participation in this world championship. At this point Tim Wechsler and Bene Wechsler GER 90 from Lake Ammer, Bavaria, report on behalf of the many young sailors and teams about how they experienced the 2016 world championship and how things will now be different with their facebook posts. Joining in as well were the German promotional-boat sailors Johanna Beichl and Franz Graf GER 2.

Thanks to the application of all our highbar skills, on Thursday we just managed the measurement of the towing line that was 5 cm too short. Once more we used the last day before the races for extensive training and again, vigorously, we worked together with GER 172 and GER 2 honing our boat speed and we are now hopefully “ready for the worlds.
18
A very light wind awaited us on the first day of the World Championship. Nevertheless, all boats ventured punctually out and the first start was carried through on time. Above all, GER 172, Sami Leitl with his helmsman Marc Strittmatter, coped most favourably with such a wind and sailed into 39th place. Jojo & Franz were in 65th place and Tim & Bene could not quite find their composure and only just attained 93rd place out of 113 boats.
The second day appeared to be significantly better. With all crews well prepared and with good expectations of the conditions, they set out into wind strengths of between three and four. The race committee confidently carried through the three scheduled races. Everything ran considerably better today, and in almost all the boats as well. GER 172 Marc/Sami were able to secure their place among the leading half of the boats and sailed a good, constant
FD WORLDS Germany
series. Following their disappointing performance on the first day, for GER 90 Tim/Bene things were also finally running very well, although it could have turned out much better if several – some quite hectic – manoeuvres while running with the spinnaker had worked out. The missing weight in Jojo/Franz’s boat, GER 2, became clearly apparent. Particularly in the gusts, some severe, the two of them found
it difficult to cope, and in comparison with the others, they were unable to keep up with the tack point and the speed. Tomorrow we shall set off again with somewhat less wind. We’re looking forward to it . So long! GER 2, GER 90 und GER172
On the third day, a further two races were held in wind strengths of 2–3. GER 172 Marc/ Sami were able to further defend their place in the Goldfleet despite a blunder in the 6th stage and they now lie in 46th place. Unfortunately, GER 90 Tim Wechlser and Benedikt Nagel just missed the Goldfleet with their position in 61st place and landed in the Silberfleet with GER 2 Jojo/Franz, who are
19
FD WORLDS GERMANY
in 84th place. The 4th day remained ‘lay day’ so that the 6 planned races could be sailed on schedule. Despite the disappointment of losing out in a place in the Goldfleet, GER 90 and GER 2 in the Silverfleet continued their assault and pushed ahead against the very strong competition still here in the second group seeking ‘1st place in the second half’. We are all quite contented with our results up till now and we look forward to the last 3 races... :D So long! GER 90 Thursday thus remained the scheduled ‘lay day’ and due to insufficient wind following an attempted race, Friday also became an undesired ‘lay day’. On Saturday the Silverfleet sailed two more races, while the Goldfleet had three, due to the one previously cancelled. We achieved 76th place overall out of a total of 113 boats.

World Championship 2016 Steinhude – over and out! The World Championship has now finally come to an end and we have all returned once again to our Bavarian homeland. All in all, it was a well-organised and successful event. We are all more or less contented with our sailing performances. The one or the other placing further forward would have been above all possible for GER 90 & GER 2, although we have all only this year switched around somewhat. We have learned much, and we already look forward to the next competition in Italy. The next regional regattas are coming up soon and the season is still long! AUSTRALIAN FLYING DUTCHMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 25TH TO 28TH MARCH 2016 Botany Bay NSW The Australian Championships were held on Botany Bay, Sydney over Easter 2016, hosted by the Botany Bay Yacht Club. We had forgotten how good sailing on Botany Bay could be with consistent 10 to 15 knot south easterly winds, very few other boats on the bay, and no ferries.
After each race, we had the pleasure of sailing from the course to St George Sailing Club on a 5 kilometre 2 sail reach up the Georges River. The Championship was hard – fought between Ian McCrossin and James Cook, and Lachlan Gilbert and Douglas Rawson-Harris, with the result only being decided in the last heat. The racing was close with Mark Henger
sailing with Stuart Edgar, and David Ham sailing with his son Andrew, also being near the lead on numerous occasions. At the AGM, a new administration was elected, with a very enthusiastic President Colin McLeod taking the helm. Our thanks go to Botany Bay Yacht Club for organising a fantastic regatta.
21
N ew Z e a l a n d 29.01. – 31.01.2016 It was discussed during the 2014/15 NZL Nationals in Nelson after the Sydney Worlds, if we are possibly having a World Championships coming back to New Zealand, it was important to take our little fleet to places in New Zealand that hadn’t yet seen the power and beauty of the Flying Dutchman, at least in recent years. With that undertaking, the fleet approached the New Plymouth Yacht Club (on the western side of the North Island) to see if they could run a Nationals regatta for our class, within and alongside their annual Senior Club regatta, and on acceptance, the class was off to a new venue for our 2015/16 National Championships. A notable addition to the fleet after a 15 year hiatus was the MacKay built NZL 105, which has been refitted by Andrew McKee to an immaculate standard. For this regatta she would be sailing under the sail number NZL 7 driven by young Finn Bismark and crewed by his Dad, Matt. With a forecast for a light airs regatta, race 1 took no one by surprise as the fleet set off in a very soft breeze. Young Finn in NZL 7 made their intentions very clear from the outset, leading the fleet from start to finish in difficult and changing conditions, to take victory over renowned light airs specialist Hideo Tayama sailing with Tony Saunders (NZL 110).
22
NZL
Race 2 started in a slowly building sea breeze that saw everyone on the wire and the fleet condensing together as the big shifts and pressure patches decreased. The pressure steadily increased throughout the race and along with it the need to change gears and depower for each combination. Smarting from a disappointing 4th in Race 1, defending champions Andrew McKee with Dave Hislop (NZL 111) pushed hard to take race 2 from Nelson super duo (both experienced FD helms) of Bruce Lissant- Clayton and David Gibb (NZL 118). Unfortunately the increasing breeze took toll on NZL 7, inverting and breaking their mast on a rapid 3 sail reaching leg, whilst they were contesting hard in the lead bunch. Race 3 saw a few of the crews changing Genoas as the sea breeze settled in at a good solid 16–18kts, with the sea state starting to build. The fleet, reduced by one before the start, recognized it was “batten down the hatches” and got set for some great rides. The only crews completing this race were NZL 111 and NZL 118. The remaining suffering gear damage (Joseph & Peter Bailey on NZL131 broken mast, and Mark Bishop with John Bailey on NZL 72 destroying Kicker and mast rake sheave) and NZL 110, after spending a considerable amount of time in the water cleaning up the boat following a capsize, electing to retire and preserve their bodies for the remainder of the regatta. Day 2 started like Day 1, with Race 4 beginning in a soft, shifting and patchy breeze. This time some brilliant sailing by NZL 118 saw them hold off the ever menacing NZL 110 to take the race victory, giving helmsman Bruce a well-deserved first heat win at a Nationals in over 3 decades of racing FD’s. Race 4 started with the sea breeze again building, albeit less than on Day 1, to compress
the fleet and give the local yacht club sailors sharing the course, a really good example of hard close FD sailing. NZL 111 took the victory off NZL 110, who was very closely followed by the whole fleet in rapid succession. With the sea breeze not filling above 12kts, again the fleet was tight with many lead changes, in what could be described as perfect FD sailing conditions. Unfortunately for NZL 7, after taking to the fleet with a perfectly timed port tack start, easily clearing the entire fleet to be in a commanding position, pulled up with what turned out to be a minor gear issue. Matt elected not to put any more of longtime sailing partner Andy’s rigs at risk and retired to the beach for repairs. Again NZL 111 fought off a strong challenge from NZL 118 to take another win. Day 3 started with an unusual offshore breeze and an earlier start time saw the fleet out in these different conditions. With the breeze coming off the land there were many gains and losses to be had and these are the conditions that many of us have found out over the years, NZL 110 is somewhat devilishly untouchable in. Hideo was at his best, winning race 7 commandingly and taking the number of different race winners for the regatta to four! In the same unstable light offshore breeze for race 8, after a poor start and crew swim, NZL 111 found a “Hail Mary” shift on the
1st beat. Far from the rest of the fleet, they gained enough lead to be able to mitigate NZL 110’s blistering pace to take another race win and with that take out the regatta. Race 9 started after a long wait, with the RO having to completely reset the course for a new breeze, on the other side of the shipping channel. Although now coming from the opposite direction, the breeze was still light and again NZL 7 showed us how different things could have been in the results without the mast breakage, clearing out on the fleet to take the race from NZL 110. The fleet will return to Nelson for the 2016–17 Nationals, which will be the same venue (we hope) to host the 2019 World Championships from. DAVE HISLOP

U SA US Nationals in the Flying Dutchman Class – Columbia River Gorge 29 through 31 July 2016 FD sailors from the US and Canada, and one competitor from New Zealand (granted, he also lives in the US) came together at this amazing sailing venue where some of the world’s best windsurfers also like to compete. The Columbia River Racing Organization did a wonderful job in organizing several classes competing in the Columbia River One Design competition at the same time. There were two race courses. The bigger boats (the FDs included) had to sail upriver a longer distance to get to the start; wind regularly comes from the Pacific Ocean and continues building through the afternoon, blowing inland against the river current, resulting in a steep, short wake that is very challenging. The FDs shared the race course with the Moore 24s and the Melges 24s. First start was in medium but increasing winds. By the end of the day the FDs were struggling with wind and waves. We got four races in, and Paul Scoffin-Pavel Ruzicka (NZL-145) showed their abilities by winning those races. In second was Mike Meszaros-Gerhard Panuschka (USA-88). Paul sails a Mader, while Mike sails a Pacifica FD (local builder from Oregon, full carbon). The next day very strong winds were forecast due to a strong pressure differential between the coast and inland. The FD sailors got together and voted on whether
to chance going out in these conditions or to save boats and men for less demanding conditions the following day. The vote was unanimous, and we decided to watch the keel boats. The race committee was a little disappointed because they “enjoy watching the FDs perform”. In any case, the decision turned out to be a good one: we had sustained winds in the 30 mph range. It was interesting watching the Melges and the Moores struggle with even stronger puffs and steep waves. The FD sailors also took advantage of this break from racing. Buzz Ballenger, our Class President, organized a training session on how to trim FDs in strong wind conditions. Thanks also to Paul Scoffin and Lin Robson, everybody was able to learn a lot of new tricks. In the evening we were treated to a wonderful dinner where we heard some exciting stories from some of the sailors. On the last day we had three races left. Again, the wind was building over the afternoon, and by the start of the last race the FDs were again in survival mode. Paul and Pavel repeated their show of strength and won all races. Lin Robson-Kim MacDonald (USA-36) gave Paul and Pavel some good fights, and they were rewarded with second place overall. Third place went to our President Buzz Ballenger-Kurt Hemmingsen (the crazy crew from Denmark, US-1453), just one point ahead of the fourth place Mike and Gerhard, followed by Tim Sayles-Ondrej Lehecka (USA-1444), our Canadian friends Derrick and Jushua Hiltz (father-son team, CAN-298), Duane Ehleringer (builder of the Pacifica FDs, USA-8), and Peter Carr with his crew called Smalls (who is the size of a basket ball player, USA-1445). Peter is from nearby Seattle, and he again did a wonderful job in organizing trophies (and other goodies …), and being an all-around fun guy to be with. Overall everybody had a great time despite the strong winds on the second day. The travel distances in North America are a huge challenge: it took major planning to get boats from the East Coast to the Gorge, and our Canadian friends also had a long journey. Gerhard Panuschka

Open Dutch Championship s Workum 09.09. – 11.09.2016 Six beautiful races were sailed at Workum on the IJsselmeer for the title “Dutch Champion Flying Dutchman”. Two days saw southerly winds of 4 Beaufort, which caused the well-known short, steep IJsselmeer waves. The third day the wind was too little to sail and all racing was abandoned. The conditions were ideal for teams that, under all circumstances, know how to get their boat going. Up front Enno & Ard in the NED-26 were the favourites and they lived up to those expectations. Frank & Sjors in the NED-18 also found their way quite well in the difficult choppy conditions. Most races showed a similar course in the front ranks: the NED-26 took off, followed by the NED-18 at some distance. Behind these two it was a lot more exciting, with the never-ceasing battle between Albert & Bas in the NED-15 and Fred & Casper in the NED-5 flaring up again. Almost every race it was close between these two, but in the end Bas & Appie came third just before Fred & Casper, leaving them with the writer’s honour for this event. Piet & Klaas in the NED-312 came fifth in the end after a stable series. With six first places Enno & Ard became Dutch Champion 2016 Flying Dutchman and indeed well-earned. Congratulations! The atmosphere was very good all throughout the weekend, obviously helped by the beautiful weather, but also due to the well-received parties on both evenings in the restaurant next to the slipway.
There was only one point of concern and that was the limited number of (foreign) competitors with only 16 boats, of which only two from abroad; a little disappointing for the organization. It was good to see Kurt Prenzler (GER-66) again. With Jupp Wanders (GER-139), Kurti and his crew Eric Schlißke, Tanja, Maarten, Albert, Bas, Thijs and Theo all in the same Workum hotel we had quite some memorable breakfasts together. Although the rest of the sailors, who all chose a comfortable camping spot next to the water, will certainly praise the joys of sleeping outdoors in such beautiful late summer weather. It was also good to see Theo & Thijs participating in the races despite their physical problems. The race committee was able to realize a series of good races with well layed-out courses. In consultation with the NFDO-board they experimented with two courses “triangle-loop-triangle” and “trapeze with (several) outer loop(s)” with different finish locations. Both forms were successful. With such brilliant weather – good wind ánd sunshine, what more could a sailor want? – and such excellent company on the water this was certainly a memorable Dutch National Championships. Hopefully we’ll see some more FD sailors joining us next year! Fred Schaaf NED-5

Polish Championship Otmuchow Lake 26.08. – 28.08.2016
We had no written report from Poland when we finished this FD bulletin issue. Never the less the recent development of the Polish class is is too remarkable not to be mentioned. A good number of new faces can be seen on the water and the class launched a professional and great looking new homepage: www. sailfd.pl
28
With 19 boats, 15 of these from Poland the FD class organized a strong National Championship which was won by Petr Storch and TomaĹ› Palkovsky from the Czech Republic. The next National Championship will again be held at Lake Otmuchov close to the Czech border and should attract many sailors from other countries! MARC GER172

Czech Championship Nechranice 9th – 11th September 2016 22 boats (13 Czech, 4 German, 4 Polish, 1 Austrian) The 3 Czech boats in Austria’s Achensee Regatta intensively canvassed for participation in their championship, and for this reason they had rescheduled their dates (originally planned for the Achensee weekend). Since I had always wanted to sail with the Czechs, I used the journey home from the Austrian Championship as an excursion to Nechranice, a large reservoir not far from the border to Saxony, that is, to the east of the Ore Mountains. As our helmswoman I recruited my daughter Lisa and for our boat we received GER 213 (Rolf Albert), delivered by Felix Albert directly to Nechranice! Many thanks to them both! The weather conditions (again glorious late summer weather of about 30°C) promised nothing too good for the wind situation… The racing committee used the first consistent wind on late Friday afternoon for the first race: indeed, two fine races could be staged in wind strengths of 2-3 (the second was shortened, the night-time calm made its presence felt). Free beer was on offer directly thereafter, and sumptuous sailors’ dining in the clubhouse: Roast carp, no end of pork knuckle and musical accompaniment from the Czech sailors: Petr Jelinek (CZE 9) brought out his contrabass and variously accompanied the guitarists Petr (CZE 11), Milan (CZE 5) and Otakar (CZE 38). An entertaining repertoire of evergreens, country music and songwriter ballads brought about a wonderful atmosphere, and in between, photos were shown of both races.
30
Unfortunately the weekend came to an end, at least for the sailing: no further races were staged; and thus unfortunately also not the championship either. After 2 races Jiri Hruby/Roman (CZE 21) won, ahead of Milan Cap/Zbynek Zanker (CZE 17) and Markus and Joshua von Lepel (GER 17). There was however a continuation of culinary offers, namely in a nearby guesthouse on Saturday evening with typical Czech cuisine: Liver-dumpling soup, meats with dumplings and pancakes for dessert! And thereafter, once again free beer and guitar music (with bass) in the clubhouse, for some: until long after midnight! I have seldom experienced such an easygoing regatta, and next year I shall be returning! To the Czech FD friends: Sincere thanks for the hospitality. Finally, some information about the FD class in the Czech Republic: • The new president is Petr Storch (CZE 11) • Next year the regatta at Achensee will count towards the ranking • Perhaps one will see even more Czech FDs in Bavaria and Austria in 2017 • There are also new crews, e.g. two young sailors from the Laser class (Jan Cutka and Zdenek Pavlicek, sailing in HUN 4) Manfred Panuschka FD AUT 368

HUNGARIAN FD CHAMPIONSHIP 8. – 10. SEPT. 2016 BALATONFÖLDVÁR The late summer days, illuminated by warm sunshine, brought the weakening easterly wind we are so used to at this time of the year at lake Balaton. 8 - 10 knots, dropping down to 6 - 8 knots towards the end of the

competition, still allowed for seven races to be successfully run. The line-up was smaller than it has been in previous years in the absence of our friends from abroad; still, the competition was great
fun and very enjoyable, highlighted by the exciting battle for the second place. Zsofia Csanda

Austria
Austrian FD Championship 2nd – 4th September 2016, SCK/Attersee The Austrian Championship with 16 crews from Austria, Germany and the Netherlands took place during gorgeous late summer weather, although without the ‘Rosenwind’ (the famous thermal north wind at Attersee), but instead with 6 races in a southerly wind that however only blows in the early morning hours: Following a period of dead calm on Friday, the sailors had to line up at the starting line for the first race on Saturday ‘late at night’: at 6:30, sailing out onto the lake was arranged! The club’s catering appreciated the early-risers’ predicament and decided to get up at the same time so the sailors would be well fortified with breakfast when sailing out: since indeed the forecasted southerly wind became constant with a strength of 2–3 and we were able to start punctually at 7:00 (am!!!). The racing committee used the slackening wind for 3 races. From 11:00 the wind had dissipated, and we were then once again able to enjoy the exerted efforts of the SCK’s (Sailing Club Kammersee – the host) catering and the wonderful bathing weather (Attersee had 23°C and the air temperature was at about 30°C)… or catch up on the lack of sleep… On Saturday too, the Rosenwind did not materialise during the day, so the evening was rounded off with sailors’ fare in the SCK, although not late into the night, because once again sailing with a southerly wind was predicted for Sunday. Punctually at 7:00 the fourth race could be started, again in 2–3 wind-strength; now the 11 Aquila boats joined us which did not get in the way of the FDs; they were sailing their state championship and started 5 minutes after the FDs. Three fine races were again sailed, with the wind slacking off towards the end; the 4th race was ultimately cancelled: the southerly wind tailed off. The sailors unanimously decided not to start any further races, so the presentation ceremony was unhurriedly carried out at midday: in the end the Achensee
crew, Christoph Aichholzer and Philipp Zingerle won (after the first day the young Traunsee crew, Jakob Holzinger and Paul Srienz were really close behind, doubling right down on the Flying Tyroleans!). The Salzburg crew, Roland Leimgruber (a successful former Corsair sailor from Mattsee) and Thomas Oswald attained bronze in the Austrian Championship. Our Netherlands guests, Henri Koning and Robbert Taal however, were placed in front of them in 3rd place overall. This championship weekend was a successful occasion! Thanks to the confident and professional race committee, six fair races could be sailed despite the difficult wind conditions. On land too, we felt very contented as guests of the SCK, not least due to the good hospitality and catering. On the same dates next year (the first September weekend is anticipated) this preeminent regatta will once again be held at the SCK. We shall be very pleased to see lively participation from our neighbouring countries! Manfred Panuschka AUT 22

EURO CUP Italian Championship 16. – 18. September 2016 Campione, Lake Garda Campione – so far south – is there any wind down there at all? Indeed, for some FD sailors north of the Alps the choice of this venue for the Italian Championship on Lake Garda raised a few questions. Especially because in the last few years the FD fleet routinely met in Torbole or earlier in Riva, and only then ventured further south as far as Malcesine solely for the world championship. Those who put aside their doubts were then able to experience some of the finest FD sailing and certainly did not complain about insufficient wind! Not only the spectacular location of the UNIVELA complex under the cliffs, but the entire furnishings of the modern and comfortable hostel, parking for campervans directly beside the boats, as well as the luxuriously wide slipway, all make Campione quite a remarkable venue. But also out on the water real all-embracing sailing was enjoyed: The first race was arranged for Friday at 12:00. Unfortunately – and this was virtually the only downer of this great regatta – the race committee idled away a punctual start set for 12:00pm, so that the decreasing wind strength was no longer sufficient to bring the second race to a successful conclusion. The first race went to the Vespasiani brothers, the titleholders, although wine tasting and an outstanding evening dinner made up a very nice consolation. That there might be some wind on Sunday could already be anticipated from the weather situation, but what then occurred was somewhat more than expected. The start was announced for 10:00 am, 300 metres paddling out to the wind’s edge and then we really took off: Winds gusting to 35 knots and one-metre
36
waves was simply too much for most of the 35 boats. Just 11 boats managed to reach the finish, the rest gave up or struggled unsuccessfully against the severe conditions. In routined ease, HUN 70 was the fastest to sail the course and its crew then also performed a couple of training manoeuvres just to top it all: Hats off! After this exhausting race there was a long break on land with some more very spectacular boat rescues. After the north-wind significantly slackened, a further two races were started. HUN 70 confidently won both of these. ITA 4 was able to achieve 2nd place. Only an OCS and a 19th place in the final race on Sunday actually prevented a placing among the top three. The constant north-wind on Sunday, with light shifts to the east presented three additional, tactically demanding races. HUN 13 and ITA 94 were able to attain 2nd and 3rd place with very consistent performances. Altogether, the Italian Championship in Campione was a great finale to the season in Italy, so I very much hope to sail again in the regatta at Campione in an FD and to be a returning guest at UNIVELA. International German Championship Cospuder Lake, 06/10 – 09/10/2016 Even if the weather forecast was not very promising, over fifty teams gathered for the International German Championship at Cospuder Lake. Where was that, please? Indeed, Cospuder Lake near Leipzig where exactly 25 years ago the last freight train with brown coal from the open-cast mines finally drove off. The
lake was created and is still today part of an extensive lake-scape with high leisure value directly beyond the gates of the Eastern German boomtown of Leipzig. The lake is unfortunately not the largest of these new lakes, but on its shore a professional sailing centre was created 10 years ago which also houses Cospuder Yacht Club – organiser of the meanwhile
well-established FD season final and this year also of the International German Championship. Plenty of space for boats, trailers and campervans, a homely restaurant for the evening events, good organisation out on the water provided good general conditions for the International German Championship. Very changeable, partly strongly veering winds turned the 7 races sailed into a nervous balancing act for crews and organisers alike. The somewhat very variable performances from most teams are very real proof of the tactically difficult conditions. Deservedly, Kay-Uwe Lüdtke and Kai Schäfers were able however to so press home their lead that they didn’t even need to show up for the last race. Runners-up were Peggy and Torsten Bahr. In third place there was Hans-Peter Schwarz and Roland Kirst rounding off a very successful season. MARC GER172

Flying Dutchman WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 22.09. – 30.09.2017 Why choose Marina di Scarlino? Marina di Scarlino is located in southern Tuscany, on one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Maremma region. The Marina today is not just a top-quality mooring place, but an open door where visitors will find the very best of the culture, nature, and food and wine that the region has to offer. The Marina is set in a unique environment, away from the crowds and close to pristine beaches and the characteristic Mediterranean pine forests. The inland area behind the Marina forms the perfect backdrop, with a view of the medieval castle of Scarlino, one of the many medieval hamlets that line the Maremma hills; on the horizon out to sea are Elba and Montecristo, two of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. Marina di Scarlino’s surroundings are without a doubt one of its most appealing features: the Maremma region is one of the most fascinating and more or less off-thebeaten-track destinations in Tuscany – a land of good food and wine, culture, wild unspoilt nature and, of course, the sea in all its forms.
