IF you want 10 amazing days IF is back and bigger than ever before with events taking place across Central Milton Keynes and extending out to exciting new locations including the Cathedral of Trees and Willen Lake. The Festival is under-pinned by an ongoing theme of sound and music, and this year through large-scale spectaculars such as Fous de Bassin on Willen Lake, and intimate experiences including The Cabaret of Ideas, we encourage people to discover what divides us and what unites us. We present new commissions from our Artist-in-Residence and choreographer Rosemary Lee working with composer Terry Mann, sonic artist Kaffe Matthews, singer Melanie Pappenheim and writer Jackie Kay. The ever-popular Spiegeltent is back and we have also created Family Focus - a series of events for children and families that celebrate the beginning of the summer holidays. Our thanks go to Arts Council England, Milton Keynes Council and our many corporate partners and generous individual supporters who make IF possible. I’d also like to extend special thanks to our Creative Director, Bill Gee who has worked tirelessly with us on three editions of IF and now heads off to explore pastures new. We have a fantastic Festival Team including many committed volunteers and together we invite you to enjoy IF: 2014. Sonic artist Ray Lee – British Composer of the Year for Sonic Art in 2012 – has created the evocative Chorus, a giant sound installation that will be presented at three sites in Central Milton Keynes. Chorus is an impressive series of huge metal tripods with rotating arms which tower above the audience. At the end of each arm, loudspeakers emit pulsating, harmonic sounds whilst kinetic movement creates the effect of a whirling swarm of fireflies or planets in motion.

In one afternoon you are invited to engage in a live wikipedia of fascinating thought leaders, experts and mavericks from, or who have a strong connection with, Milton Keynes.
Two DJs play simultaneously on two separate channels, which means you only listen to the music that you want to hear – and if you don’t like the music from the first DJ just flick the switch and listen to the second DJ. Great fun!
On arrival and after being plied with good coffee and doughnuts, the audience will lucky-dip pick four 20-minute conversations - it could be with a Formula 1 car designer, a sportsperson, pop musician, a climate change dissident, a Japanese Buddhist monk... who knows who you’ll meet, talk with and maybe learn from?

After collecting sounds from musicians in the Ethiopian capital and then working with members of Jamiroquai and Asian Dub Foundation, Nick created his first album A Town Called Addis in 2006 featuring a blend of jazz and reggae with traditional Ethiopian music. A run of world tours later, the band arrives with a host of musical genres wrapped up in one fabulously dubby package.

Led by the irrepressible Ade Edmondson, The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. They’ve given the songs a Celtic feel, and stuck in the odd reel and jig because they’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the thrill of watching punk live back in the ‘70s! Expect songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others - even Kraftwerk...

IF you’re up for a good laugh
IF you want a family show
Comedy’s fastest-rising star and TV favourite Seann Walsh arrives in Milton Keynes with an all-new show to prove to the world that he’s the Lie-In King!
This multi-sensory theatrical adaptation of Jean Giono’s environmental classic tells the inspiring story of a shepherd who plants a forest, acorn by acorn, transforming a barren wasteland.
One of the most frighteningly gifted talents to emerge from the UK comedy circuit in years, Seann is a charismatic, natural-born observational storyteller.
As much a touching tale as it is a hilarious puppet show, The Man Who Planted Trees shows us the difference one man (and his dog!) can make to the world.
“See him now, before the stadium tour” Sunday Times Touring with Seann is Romesh Ranganathan, known for his bitingly fresh gags and with a growing hoard of awards, and TV and radio appearances to his name.
Suitable for adults and children over 7.
“Laughs, heartbreak, war, regeneration, scented breezes, sparkling wit and the best dog puppet ever. Perfect for children and grown-ups. Terrific” The Guardian

IF you need poptastic laughs IF you want indie pop
Five-piece indie-popsters The Feeling have a string of recognisable, radio-friendly hits under their belts aided by their unadulterated brand of ‘proper’ pop. Harking back to the heady days of The Beatles and Supertramp, The Feeling are a good-time band whose foot-stomping, heart-wrenching anthems will melt the coldest of hearts.
“Ornate and soaring conversational love songs, full of heart, bittersweet observation and unashamed street-level Englishness” The Observer Music Monthly
Now all grown up (just like Miley and Bieber) their barely-conscious recoupling marks the beginning of a new pop-comedy-mashupinfotainment era. Since their hit appearance at the Festival in 2010, they’ve been everywhere - from the Edinburgh Fringe to the West End, BBC Radio 1 to E4 and from Shepherd’s Bush Empire to the Sydney Opera House. Important Site Information Further details are on www.ifmiltonkeynes.org
Central Milton Keynes has good parking facilities and ample cyclepaths and access/walkways.
Cathedral of Trees, Newlands for Rosemary Lee’s Under The Vaulted Sky Friday 18 - Sunday 20 July. Event information on pages 6 and 7
South Willen Lake Park (MK15 0DS) - Festival Central: Located between the H5 Portway (A509), V11 Tongwell, H6 Childs Way and V10 Brickhill Street. The Park is linked to the city centre via leisure routes through Campbell Park and Newlands.
This is an outdoor, promenade and standing event - the audience will move around the Cathedral site to follow the performance, covering a distance of just under ½ a mile, including the walk from the Cathedral’s car park.
Cathedral of Trees: Located opposite Willen Lake at Newlands, just off the junctions of V10 Brickhill Street and H5 Portway (A509) and off Livingstone Drive.
The terrain in and around the Cathedral is akin to a ‘woodland walk’ - uneven, grassy, with foliage and twigs underfoot. In inclement weather, the ground will be spongy, wet and boggy in places. Some areas may be difficult to access or of steep incline. Every effort will be made to make your visit as easy as possible although the Festival cannot guarantee access to every part of the Cathedral / performance.
Arriva Bus Transport within Milton Keynes: For information about buses to
and from Festival sites, please visit the Arriva website: arrivabus.co.uk/IFMK. Cycle Parking: Available at South Willen Lake Park. PARKING & BLUE BADGE INFORMATION South Willen Lake Park (Festival Central)

There is limited parking and paid Blue Badge parking near the main entrance to the Cathedral, off Livingstone Drive. Overflow parking is located at Gulliver’s Land Theme Park (MK15 0DT), also off Livingstone Drive.
If you use a self-propelled or attendant propelled wheelchair, you may require additional assistance. Please contact the Box Office on 01908 280800 so that Festival Stewards can assist if required. If you are unsteady on your feet, a ‘shooting stick’ seat will be permitted (no chairs or stools please). Caution must be taken on site which may be dark and shaded in places. Please wear sensible shoes or stout footwear with a good undergrip. The show is suitable for families, though under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times. Please allow time for ticket purchasing if buying on the night, and allow 15 minutes to get to the assembly point where the production will start. Once the show begins, latecomers will not be admitted. Willen Lake for Ilotopie’s Fous de Bassin (Water Fools) Friday 18 and Saturday 19 July, 10pm. Event information on pages 10 and 11 This event takes place on water and uses naked flames and pyrotechnics. Caution must be taken on site which may be dark in places. Please walk slowly.
