IEU TALENT & CAREERS Career Report Class of 2017

IE University students start to receive employment offers even before they’ve graduated. While many alumni are recruited by major multinational companies, others prefer to join small and mid-sized companies and startups. In addition, some students choose entrepreneurship as a career choice and start a business while studying at IE University or shortly after graduation, building and managing their own companies.

Bachelor in Communication IE University student Almustafa Mahmoud Khalid created BLVCK APPAREL and is redefining the fashion industry in Asia. Read this short interview to learn more about his startup! What is BLVCK APPAREL? BLVCK APPAREL is an independent fashion label with the purpose of creating pieces of clothing that are not meant to be used as clothing but to serve as a statement made by the wearer. We achieve this by spending enormous amounts of time to make sure our pieces are one of a kind in the market. This is evident when we look at the combination of quality, design and price. What also makes us stand out from others, is that everything we produce is limited edition and therefore people feel like the pieces are more special than when they get them from other brands.

What has been the biggest challenge and how did you overcome it? We have had quite a few challenges so far but the biggest has been shifting from online to offline/physical sales. As a developing brand, shops, retailers, distributors and malls are always very skeptical about the risk they are taking by investing in us. While we managed to achieve many physical sales, we discovered the best way is by hosting fashion runway shows. That way people get a real taste of what the brand is. We aim to have more of that in 2018 and we are also planning on pop-up shops in Asia soon.  What does entrepreneurship mean to you? Entrepreneurship to me is a way of life. I am a person who is always looking for new adventures, new challenges and new people to prove wrong. I have created many projects and a few businesses before. Some succeeded and some failed. This comes with entrepreneurship. A lot of trial and error but it also comes with a huge learning curve and I think that is what got me addicted. However, BLVCK APPAREL seems to be in an industry with much to learn. I won’t be leaving Creative Direction of the brand any time soon. www.blvckapparel.es

Three IE University students, Teiko Wilenius (Dual Degree in BBA + LL.B.), Philipp Nette (BBA) and Benjamin Ranft (BBA), have become entrepreneurs after finishing their studies and started their own company. This thrilling startup called Cutnut, is an all-in-one platform that allows users to produce story content on their devices. We have interviewed them to know more about their company. Keep reading to learn more.

22

What is Cutnut? Cutnut brings the story format (known from platforms such as Instagram or Snapchat) to companies, by providing the easiest story content creation platform available. With the Story Editor at its core and the UGC app as well as the embeddable story widget as two useful extensions, Cutnut helps companies to collect, produce and distribute high quality story content for their social media platforms and websites/apps easier, faster and cheaper than ever before. How did you get your idea or concept for Cutnut? It was a sudden idea, which came to Philipp on a warm Sunday afternoon in Segovia. We originally came up with an idea for a social video network during our undergraduate

23

studies in Business Administration at IE University. After being accepted to the Next Media Accelerator program we quickly pivoted our MVP to a SaaS tool for companies to create vertical stories with ease. The change was mainly influenced by the feedback we received from industry leaders during meetings we had in the past six months. What do you do at Cutnut and how has the company grown? We split responsibilities among the three founders as much as possible in a startup setting. Philipp (CEO) takes care of strategy and investor relations; Teiko (CFO) is in charge of our financials and legal issues; and Ben (CPO) is responsible for product development and tech team management. Since the beginning we raised our first investment, scaled from one product to three and employ six developers now.

“To us, entrepreneurship is the unbreakable will to create something paired with the courage to actually do it.” What has been the biggest challenge and how did you overcome it? Our biggest challenge was to identify a real need in the market for our product. Offering the original social video network app to companies and finding a way to monetize it proved very difficult until we took the companies’ feedback to heart

and shifted to a SaaS model with our current set of tools. It was a hard lesson to learn that your wonderful first idea is not necessarily what the market has been waiting for. What does entrepreneurship mean to you? Being an entrepreneur often means that you have to cope with a lot of ups and downs along your startup’s development. The uncertainty around your future demands a lot of courage and endurance. The key is to keep going and find new solutions to your dilemmas every day. To us, entrepreneurship is the unbreakable will to create something paired with the courage to actually do it. What is your advice to anyone considering becoming an entrepreneur? Keep your product as lean as possible and test early. We all want to present our clients/users with the best possible version of our product but the reality is that your product is never exactly what the market wants. Never be afraid to share details about your idea. Nobody is interested in stealing it as it is all about execution in the end. Finally, find a team that can build the MVP without the need to raise cash. www.cutnut.net
