EXPERIENCE LAW AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS UNPLUGGED

Unplugged is a practical component of your program. Each term you will be immersed in reallife scenarios and projects through workshops and visits to leading law firms. “In my last year of high school, I coorganized a social awareness project to save a Spanish cultural center in Moscow from being closed. The center was special, because it was a place where Niños de Rusia (children that were sent off to Russia during the Spanish civil war) and their families gathered for many decades in order to preserve their Spanish customs and tradition”.

“I have lived between the U.S. and Spain all my life. My father is French, my stepmother is Italian, and my best friend is Ukrainian. So coming to IE University was an easy choice because of the multicultural community. Even so, I couldn’t have imagined how much I would learn in such little time”.

STUDY PLAN The hunt for knowledge

FIRST YEAR

Your first year starts with a broad introduction to international relations and law as a whole. You will become acquainted with the main time periods and events that have shaped its history from the 16th century onward. You will also develop the skills required to understand the historical evolution of the common legal background of Europe. Through a comparative legal methodology, you will become familiar with the principles and foundations of political science, constitutional law, criminal law, and public international law, a process that involves an initial analysis of different law systems adopted worldwide, and a good understanding of the laws that govern relationships among states, international organizations, and other global players. Through Law and International Relations Unplugged, you will experience the reality of the legal practice by the simulation of different legal professions and markets in the global economy. By the end of the year you will have acquired the skills to apply economic theories to your projects, develop critical thinking, and practice the most important competencies related to leadership. SECOND YEAR

The innovative and practical learning approach continues into your second year, allowing you to develop the soft skills and ethical attitudes that will allow you to become a legal and international professional. You will be provided with methodological and practical tools to understand and evaluate arguments about contending issues in international affairs. Also, this year you will be able to participate in the legal clinic or IEU Labs.

From a comparative and international perspective, you will continue with Criminal Law and be introduced to Private, Civil, and European Law. Through Commercial Law and Corporations, you will obtain an in-depth view of the legal rules of businesses and commercial activities, and understand the underpinning legal economic thinking. During this year you will also take Political Theory, which will acquaint you with foundational texts of political thought, and to compare politics on an economical and international scale. THIRD YEAR

During your third year, you will acquire the necessary skills to understand and apply civil and labor law by using comparative analysis, as well as connect them to other relevant areas of law such as family, estate, property, and administrative law. You will be introduced to the theoretical paradigms which have historically guided research in international relations. You will study different ways of comprehending globalization in the contemporary world and understanding the complexities within international development, aid, and social entrepreneurship. From a business perspective, you will acquire organizational and conflict resolution skills, deal with commercial law within private international law, and become familiar with basic professional ethical concepts. FOURTH YEAR

During this year, you will specialize in specific subjects by choosing complementary courses and completing an internship. You will also be eligible to choose an exchange program with one

of our prestigious partner institutions around the world. In the second half of this year, you will explore the sphere of humanities and develop an understanding of key issues in political communication and public opinion. Further focus will be given to topics such as international trade, and you will deepen your knowledge about not only general-purpose organizations like the UN, but also more specialized institutions, such as NATO, WTO, IMF, and the International Criminal Court. You will also start dealing with the most significant aspects of litigation regarding procedures for civil, labor, and criminal law. By the end of the year you will have the skills required to manage a law firm and develop your professional career. FIFTH YEAR

In your last year, you will continue delving into litigation by developing critical thinking and analyzing the principal concerns that necessarily appear during legal practice, such as civil disobedience or the fairness of justice. You will also acquire the skills leaders use to resolve conflicts and manage projects, organizations, and multinational corporations. You will also have classes on Administrative Law and Economic Regulation and Taxation, analyzing the most fundamental structural elements of a tax system and comparing key tax concepts in an international environment. An important part of your fifth year will be dedicated to your final project, drawing upon the knowledge gained throughout your academic courses, internships, IEU Labs, and exchange program.

Wake up, get ready, have breakfast, and go to IE University.

9:30

I usually go to the student hub, where you’ll always find someone you know to talk to or have coffee with.

10:00

At this time I usually have to study, meet some classmates to work on a group project, or just do some reading. Depending on the amount of concentration and silence I need, I stay in the hub, go to the library or go somewhere else where I can work.

11:30

Take a break from working and go outside to play pingpong or just have a snack.

14:00

I bring food from home and meet my friends in the hub to have lunch together. I love this time of the day, because I get to meet with friends that I’m not in class with. On Fridays I always eat out at one of the many nearby restaurants!

Objective: predict and evaluate players’ behavior. Best things about it: we got to develop activities aimed at improving the lives of athletes and also demonstrate the value of sports to society. Most challenging aspect: in order to be heard and get our ideas implemented, we needed to make sure that absolutely everything in our proposal was well founded and based on empirical evidence.

VOICES OF THE ROYAL THEATER Objective: execute a project to transform the opera into an accessible and trendy activity for young people. Best things about it: we first had to immerse ourselves in the world of opera singers in order to understand their passion for the art! Most challenging aspect: avoid making assumptions about why young people aren’t interested in opera. At IE University, theres no single deadline for applying to our undergraduate programs. We have a rolling admissions policy, which means that you can apply to IE at any point during the year. The various stages of our admission process are aimed at identifying those areas of your academic and personal profile that make you unique, and to make sure that our educational model is a good fit for you.

As our programs usually fill up far in advance of the start of the academic year, we advise candidates to apply between three to six months before the semester begins. This will also allow you time to obtain any necessary visas or otherqualifications. Once you have received an acceptance letter, provisional or definitive, you must make a â‚Ź1,500 non-refundable deposit to reserve your spot in the bachelors program of your choice.

HOW TO APPLY 70 71

ADMISSION TEST

PERSONAL INTERVIEW

Take IE University’s admission test or international admission tests: the SAT, ACT, CAS, or LNAT. The IE University admission test assesses the verbal, logical, and quantitative abilities you have acquired both within and outside the classroom. Above all, it centers on your ability to reason, rather than on any particular set of information. This means you don’t need to study for the test beforehand.

The Admissions Department calls those who have been successful during the admission process. You can be interviewed either on the IE University campuses in Segovia or Madrid, or at any of our 25 international offices. If you’re not easily able to reach any of these offices, we can arrange an online interview. The interview will allow us to get to know you better and assess certain qualities, such as your personality, your ability to defend your point of view and express yourself, as well as other communication skills.

After the Admissions Committee reviews your complete application and reaches a final decision, you will receive written notification of your admission. Once admitted, you may apply for scholarships and financial aid, make the non-refundable deposit of ¤1,500, and submit the documentation required for enrollment.

My University

Your application is subject to a non-refundable admission fee of ¤120. Information on how to pay this fee is included at the end of the form.

Once you have completed the steps above, the Admissions Committee reviews your application file, assesses your profile, and determines whether or not you can advance to the final application phase: a personal interview.

FINAL COMMITTEE DECISION

If you have any questions or would like us to explain personally how the application and admission processes work, don’t hesitate to contact us by email at university@ie.edu or by phone at + 34 921 412 428 or +34 915 689 620. Our objective is for IE University to be the best university for you, and for you to fit well with us, too.
