Bike Safety

The ABCs For You & Your Bike You

Your Bike

You should always wear a helmet for all wheeled sports activities. A properly fitted helmet can help reduce the risk of head injuries. Make sure your bike helmet fits you well. Always wear your helmet the right way so it will protect you: Make sure it covers your forehead and do not let it tip back. Always fasten the straps. Do not wear a hat under your helmet (From safekids.org, kidshealth.org)

A: Air. Before you ride your bike, you want to make sure there is plenty of air in your bike’s tires. If you are not sure how much air to use, check the sides of your tiresthere’s a recommendation on the side as to how much air it needs. Also check the condition of your tires. If you see a bubble or the tread is gone, this is a good time to replace that tire, otherwise, there is a chance the tire could pop and cause a fall. B: Brakes. You should always have working brakes on your bike and not ride if the brakes don’t work. If you need help, we suggest taking your bike to your local bike shop such as Yucaipa Bike Center or Ridgeline Service in Cherry Valley. . C: Chain. Before you ride, ensure your bike chain is not rusty or dry as this could make pedaling harder and cause it break. Make sure your chain is tightened properly, if not-it could fall off and cause you to crash. These are all simple suggestions you can use and it only takes a minute. If you have already mastered your bike and you are ready for a new challengehave your thought about BMX racing? Yucaipa BMX offers a fun and exciting BMX track that you can practice AND race. They are open on Tuesday evenings for practice or Sundays for practice and racing. Check their website or Facebook page for times and schedule. For more information, check out http://www. yucaipabmx.com on suggestions and how to get started. Also check http://www. usabmx.com for other tips and other tracks in your area. Fun places to ride. Check out this link! http://yucaipatrails.org/pub/ YucaipaCityTrailGuide.pdf for easy to hard trails around Yucaipa to ride your bike. Remember to add reflective strips to your bike and helmet so cars can see you at dusk or dark.
