A WIDE VARIETY of international speakers have visited the IE School of International Relations to present their ideas about current events and share insights about management and development that the students can apply to other spheres of activity. Who better than today’s great leaders to provide the keys that will help the leaders of tomorrow?
UNA AMPLIA VARIEDAD de oradores internacionales ha visitado IE School of International Relations para aportar su visión sobre aspectos de su día a día y dar lecciones de gestión y desarrollo que los estudiantes pueden extrapolar a otros ámbitos. Quiénes mejor que los grandes líderes de hoy para poder dar las claves que servirán a los grandes líderes del mañana.
One of them was Josep Borrell, a former president of the European Parliament. This Spanish politician explained the challenges of drawing up the Treaty of Maastricht and how the common currency was decided upon. “This question of designing the euro caused significant differences among the negotiators, especially with regard to how some members of the Eurozone could deal with a systemic crisis without the necessary tools to do so,” Borrell recalled. He also explained how those decisions have had effects on the present. “I remember my German colleague warning us of the risks of adopting the euro: ‘Believe me,’ he said, ‘the adjustment will be very painful.’ And throughout the crisis we’ve seen just how painful it has been.”
Josep Borrell, expresidente del Parlamento Europeo, fue uno de ellos. El político explicó los retos que supuso el Tratado de Maastricht y cómo se gestionó el diseño de la moneda común. “La cuestión del diseño del euro generó importantes discrepancias entre los negociadores, sobre todo, respecto a cómo podrían afrontar algunos miembros de la Eurozona una crisis sistémica sin disponer de las herramientas adecuadas para ello”, recordaba Borrell y explicaba cómo esta toma decisiones ha tenido sus efectos en el presente. “Recuerdo a mi colega alemán advirtiéndonos de los riesgos de adoptar el euro: ‘Créanme, [el ajuste] será muy doloroso’. Y a lo largo de la crisis hemos comprobado cuán doloroso ha sido”, añadía.
For his part, Ray Mabus, the United States Secretary of the Navy, compared this organization with a large company. “If the US Navy were a business, it would be the second largest in the United States by number of employees, the third in assets, and the fifth in budget,” he said. “After five years as Secretary, I’ve become aware that the Navy offers something unique to the country: presence. Not only does it make it possible to be in the right place at the right time, but to always be in that place. To achieve this global presence, I’ve concentrated on four things: people, platforms, power and alliances.”
Por su parte, Ray Mabus, secretario de la Marina estadounidense, comparaba a esta organización con una gran compañía. “Si la Marina estadounidense fuese una empresa sería la segunda más grande de Estados Unidos por número de empleados, la tercera en activos y la quinta por su presupuesto”, apuntaba. “Tras cinco años como secretario de la Marina estadounidense, he sido consciente de que la Marina ofrece algo único a los Estados: presencia. No solo les permite estar en el lugar adecuado en el momento preciso, sino estar en ese lugar siempre. Para lograr esta presencia global me he centrado en cuatro cosas: las personas, las plataformas, el poder y las alianzas”, añadía Mabus.
“Western hegemony is in decline. We’re going through a change of era on a global level,” said Josep Piqué, Vice-Chairman and CEO of OHL and a former foreign minister for Spain. “The Strait of Malacca will become the Greenwich Meridian of the 21st century, the frontier that separates and connects the East with the West,” Piqué added. “In this new global setting, Europe will be on the periphery unless it becomes even more integrated,”
“La hegemonía de Occidente está en declive. Estamos viviendo un cambio de era a nivel global”, dijo Josep Piqué, vicepresidente segundo y consejero delegado de OHL y exministro de Exteriores de España. “El Estrecho de Malaca se convertirá en el Meridiano de Greenwich del siglo XXI, la frontera que separa y conecta Oriente con Occidente. En este nuevo escenario global, Europa será periférica a menos que se integre todavía más”, apuntaba Piqué.
It’s a major change that will bring new challenges to those now studying at the IE School of International Relations but who –in addition to their training– can make use of the keys that these global leaders have offered them.
Un cambio de paradigma que supondrá nuevos retos para quienes ahora se preparan en IE School of International Relations, pero que contarán — además de con su formación— con las claves que estos líderes globales les han ofrecido.
