The Northern Lehigh Food Bank Needs You This time of year is often the most sentimental. The holiday season can induce a kind of sepia-toned nostalgia, often with those proverbial warm, fuzzy feelings. Most of us are lucky enough to gather around a table with our family and friends and indulge in enough turkey, stuffing, desserts and other treats to render us immobile in front of the television for the rest of the evening. Unfortunately, many of our neighbors don’t share in the luxury of enjoying a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal. Food insecurity is a major issue in the country and in our communities. According to a report released by the United States Department of Agriculture in 2009, 16.7 million children live in food insecure households. The USDA also reports that one in six adults are suffering from hunger. Food insecurity can make the holidays a time of stress, anxiety, and sadness for families struggling in this tough economic climate. The high unemployment rate and cutting of food programs exacerbate the situation. The Northern Lehigh Food Bank at 7884 Center St. in Emerald is facing a shortfall in meat (and other food) donations for the holidays. They currently need meat for households that have three to nine members. Any type of protein is fine, including chicken, ham,

turkey, pork, beef, and fish. They will also accept any type of non-perishable food for Christmas distribution. The food donations are needed by Friday, Dec. 13. The NL Food Bank is also calling for volunteers to help on Saturday, Dec. 14 during the Christmas distribution from 9 to 11 a.m. Donations to the NL Food Bank can also be dropped off at the Town & Country Gazette offices at 4685 Lehigh Drive in Walnutport. If you are interested in donating or volunteering, you can get more information by calling the food bank at 610-767-9525. The NL Food Bank is by no means the only area distribution center that needs volunteers and donations this time of year. If you are fortunate enough to have any extra food or time, please consider sharing it with your local food pantry and help your neighbors in need.
