I’m writing this issue “welcome note” at the end of the first week of January. There are still some Christmas decorations to be put away, but the gatherings with friends have wound down. I’m not anticipating any winter doldrums because there’s always so much to do, including pulling together my records and things for tax time. That said the “winter doldrums” can affect mental

wellness for some people. And in those last two sentences we have the main themes of this issue: mental wellness and taxes.

You know, adolescents can have rocky times with their mental health. The world can seem overwhelming with school pressures, the constant noise of social media and deeply personal struggles.

For some young people those pressures can contribute to anxiety, depression, and a sense of isolation. There is a solution and it’s called Continued on page 4 “The Beautiful Stone Church at the Top of the Park”

In “Digital Lives and Mental Health” we look at both the positive and negative effects of leading digital lives, as well as strategies you can use to have a healthy engagement with our digital world.

On the tax side of things, we’re not looking at “how to pay your taxes this year,” but rather, we’re taking a look at how tax revenues flow into our local communities and how they are used from there. It’s an informative piece you might find interesting. See “Tax Dollars and Local Governments” for the details.

In “Safe Driving on Snow and Ice” we give you stats and tips from AAA on how to do it. Not only do you have to be alert and focused, but your car has to be up to the task as well. State and local governments play important roles in helping communities thrive. In this article we’re going to look at how the flow of tax dollars – where they come from and where they go – make that possible.

Local governments have different sources of revenue, including: •Property Taxes: A cornerstone for local governments, paying for many core services.

•Sales Taxes: Levied on purchases, varying by state and locality.

•Income Taxes: Personal or business income taxes, depending on state law.

•Fees & Charges: Money from tolls, utility bills, permits, and service fees.

•Federal Grants: Aid for specific programs like Medicaid, transportation, or education.

Local governments use the tax dollars primarily to fund essential public services. These services include education, public safety (police/fire),

infrastructure (roads, transit), and health/social services. In addition, the funds cover salaries, maintenance, and operations for schools, libraries, parks, sanitation, and courts.

When local tax revenue comes in it flows into a general fund, paying for the services noted above.

Beyond that general fund, specific taxes or bonds might fund large capital projects like new roads or public buildings.

The Revenue Sources Taxes are the biggest source of money that governments raise themselves. Taken together, state and local taxes average roughly half (51 percent in 2023) of the revenues that states and localities use to fund services.

In most communities, property taxes, sales taxes, and income taxes are the three major revenue sources. In general, states rely on income and sales taxes the most, and local governments rely on property taxes the most.

Money from the federal government is also an important revenue source. On average, federal grants represent roughly one-quarter (27 percent) of state and local revenue. About half of that is Continued on page 10

For local governments, aid from the state is another key source of funds. For example, most public schools are operated at the local level, but states provide much of the funding (the proportion

The percentages above come from the U.S. Census Bureau, which each year collects detailed data on revenues and spending by each state and by a sampling of local governments.

Every single person experiences anxiety at one point or another. In addition to feeling anxious in understandably stressful situations, nearly one in five Americans also have an anxiety disorder, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, making it the most common mental health concern in the US. Anxiety is a normal feeling of worry, but anxiety disorders involve intense, persistent fear and worry about everyday things. Intense anxiety can cause physical symptoms, such as fast heart rate, sweating and fatigue, and mental symptoms that can include restlessness, difficulty concentrating and irritability.

A major snowstorm affected the Lehigh Township area from Sunday, January 12th through Tuesday, January 14, 1964, when this photo was taken.

This event was classified as a true blizzard and the greatest single snowstorm recorded in some parts of PA at the time.

The storm produced 7-15 inches of snow in many areas, driven by gale-force winds that created drifts up to 8-10 feet deep, paralyzing transportation. This photo was taken on Route 946, West Mountain View Drive, in Berlinsville.

On the right-hand side of the photo is where Mama's Pizza is presently located.

Happy 2026…the Slatington Public Library wishes you a year full of blessings, love, and unforgettable memories. As we dive into 2026, we will be celebrating our 90th. Anniversary as a public library with special events and programs commemorating this historic milestone.

The predecessor to our library that we know today, the Salem Welsh Presbyterian Church’s Ladies Bible Group, began a library in 1936 with only 50 books. Nonetheless, this initial library had grown large enough to donate 2,000 books to the community’s public library less than 30 years later.

Today, the library’s public space is located on the main floor of the former Miller’s 5 & 10 store in

the Slatington Historic District.

Former library director Rosanne Pugh dedicated 40 years to the Slatington Public Library and officially retired on December 23, 2025. The library won’t be the same without her, but we all agree she has earned this wonderful new chapter in her life. Walnutport resident Pamela DeNardo has been hired as the interim library director, and she began her duties on January 5, 2026. Stop in and say hello to Pam, and Ted Zukowski, assistant librarian, started his third month in early January.

The Slatington Public Library is looking for a new Trustee from the Borough of Walnutport. If interested in this worthwhile and rewarding volunteer position, please contact the library at (610)767-6461 or email at slatlib@ptd.net.

In conjunction with the holiday season, the Slatington Public Library participates every year in the “Be An Angel” Program sponsored by The Morning Call. St. Luke’s joins national study on new shoulder Replacement technology Submitted by Sam Kennedy

St. Luke’s University Health Network has been selected as the only health care system in the Lehigh Valley, and one of just a few nationwide, to take part in a major clinical trial studying a new shoulder replacement design called the INHANCE Shoulder System by DePuy Synthes.

This research will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the INHANCE Shoulder System, which uses a stemless design instead of the traditional metal stem placed inside the arm bone. By removing the stem, the procedure may help preserve more natural bone and reduce bone loss, which could be important for patients who might need another surgery in the future.

The study is for patients who need a reverse total shoulder replacement because of a gross rotator cuff deficiency and severe pain and loss of function caused by conditions like osteoarthritis. These issues can make everyday activities difficult and greatly affect quality of life. Participation in the study is a decision made together by the patient and surgeon.

Dr. Gregory Carolan, an orthopedic surgeon with St. Luke’s Orthopedic Care, performed the first procedure in the Lehigh Valley at St. Luke’s Orthopedic Hospital at the West End Campus. DePuy Synthes invited Carolan to join the study because of his national reputation and extensive experience with complex shoulder surgeries.

“We are excited to be part of this important research,” said Carolan. “The stemless design could be a big step forward in shoulder

replacement because it preserves more of the patient’s natural bone, which is especially important for long-term results.”

St. Luke’s participation in this study highlights its commitment to bringing advanced orthopedic care to the region.
