All aboard the Nightrain! Destination Queensgate - for Bradford’s Newest Rock Venue. FRIDAY 17 MAY Bradford has never been short of great new emerging musical talent, The city can name bands including Dire Straits, The Cult, New Model Army, Terrorvision and plenty more among it’s greats. Today we have dozens of new bands making a name for themselves, such as Psychlonia, This Party Sucks, Black Falcon and Ironrat to name a few. With the re-opening of St Georges Hall in February and plans approved in March to restore Bradford’s Odeon into a 4000 capacity, world-class live entertainment and events

venue, Bradford’s live music scene is booming. We already have some brilliant small and medium-sized venues, such as the 1 in 12 Club, The Underground and Trash. The newest Bradford venue is opening on Friday 17th May. It’s called Nightrain (named after the classic Guns N’ Roses track)

Local elections Don’t waste your vote THURSDAY 02 MAY Local elections are taking place on Thursday 2nd May. It’s important to vote in these elections in order to have a say on your local community. Local elections make no changes to decisions in Westminster, local government decides what to do with the money provided to them by central government. Local councils set the rates of council tax as well as the services in your area. Your local council has an impact on many of the services you see and use every day, including housing, transport and public spaces and services.

Do what you can now This month Mark Williams talks about adapting Change is as inevitable as day becoming night and getting older. Life happens and we have to adapt. How we change and grow in each new season is quite individual. Some of us will find it hard, others seem to be able to go with the flow and make it look effortless. Change can have a positive impact and we have more time for health, fitness, family and the more fulfilling aspects of life. Often though this is preceded by going through times of planning, processing and implementing and a lot of hard work to get to this new position. Most often the curve balls and decisions of life we have to adapt cause the opposite to be true, at least for a time. A new job, new relationship, adding to the family with children (and pets) mean more responsibility and more capacity required, this gives us less time, less rest and more plates to spin. More sudden or emotionally challenging events can cause even greater upheaval. Bereavement, relationship breakdown and illness are just some of the things that are going to take more focus and time to adapt and come to a more stable place again afterwards. When I discuss health and fitness goals with a new client or friend the con-

Idle Talk | May | 2019

versation will often come round to training history and previous activity. We often hold ourselves against a standard in the past. There may be the sport playing teenage years, the time before having children when doing a class every night at the gym was the routine and times before mobility issues meant long weekend walks were a weekly activity. This may now look like short gym sessions, pilates videos at home and more joint friendly leisurely walks. We have to adjust our thinking as well as the activities to where we are now.

A new approach

We can end up holding onto a time gone by as the way we were successful in terms of taking care of our health through fitness and being closer to our ideal body composition and shape. Changes in circumstances and the natural differences in ourselves through aging and physical change can mean a new ap-

proach will be needed. Exercise and activity choices that were your go to a decade ago will probably have evolved to something different that works for you now. If you are newly starting an exercise regime or restarting after a period of time away from the gym, pool or pavement then take your time and go easy on yourself. The principles of working at a good intensity and aiming to progress over time are still true, but they are relative to where you are now in life. So do what you can where you are now - there are stages in life to ease back and focus on other priorities, to adapt to new circumstances and times to push towards a new fitness goal. Be kind to yourself and work from your current point and aim to be consistent with what you can do. Maybe you will that old level back, but if you are healthier and can enjoy your chosen activity then that is winning and making the best of yourself right now..

A member of the Idle Talk team had been suffering with Sciatica. The pain was so great that she could barely walk and had been limping and in agony for weeks so she paid Kelly a visit. This is what she had to say. “The

feeling I had after the session was astounding! I could squat, jump, dance and walk better than I had in ages. It really is a miracle. I would HIGHLY recommend going to one of these sessions. I am fully energised from it and I’m definitely going back”. During pregnancy, prenatal massage can offer lots of other benefits too. Eat and do Veg! Give a veggie diet a try for National Vegetarian Week MON 13 – SUN 19 MAY Eating more veggie food is a delicious way to not only improve your health but also do your bit for the environment. According to a survey by Waitrose, up to a third of Britons have stopped or reduced eating meat! Reasons for these changes in lifestyle across the UK include animal welfare, saving money, environmental concerns and improved health. For some it is simply a matter of enjoying the wide variety of delicious vegetarian foods now available on the market. In 2006, the UN calculated that the combined climate change emissions of animals bred for their meat

14

were about 18% of the global total – more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together. Last year, a Food Climate Research Network report

Idle Talk | May | 2019

concluded that UK meat and dairy consumption was responsible for 8% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. But however it’s counted, livestock

farming ranks as one of the three greatest sources of climate changing emissions and one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation. Vegetarian foods are low in saturated fat, free of cholesterol, and packed with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and fibre. People who eat a plant-based diet lower their risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and many other health conditions including several types of cancer. From Monday 13 to Sunday 19th of May it’s National Vegetarian Week. So what better time to try a plant based diet to improve your health and do your bit to save the planet?
