DEAD:fest takes over Trash, Bradford

What a King Cnut TUESDAY 23 OCTOBER Due to huge popular demand, after his first tourde-force, smash hit, sell out tour, My Life Story, Suggs is treading the boards again with a brand new show. If the first show was about how on Earth he got there, Suggs: What a King Cnut - A Life In The Realm Of Madness... is about the surprises that awaited him when he did. Vertigo on the roof of Buckingham Palace, nearly blowing the closing ceremony of the Olympics , the embarrassing stuff that happened at Glastonbury. Things have gone a smidge surreal since the Madness frontman was a twelve year old in shorts on

THEATRE... UNTIL 20 OCT MISS SAIGON The Alhambra WED 10 - SAT 18 OCT Based on the original 1996 comedy/drama film, Brassed Off tells the moving story of the troubles faced by a colliery brass band, following the closure of their pit. It’s about the importance of people, and the struggle to retain hope in difficult circumstances. Castaways local amateur dramatics group has teamed up with the Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band for this production which will bring tears

of sadness and laughter. The Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band was formed in 1838 when most of the inhabitants of the villages around were employed in either agriculture or coal mining. The formation of the band was a way to escape from the hard work and poor conditions at that time. WHAT’S ON

Steptoe And Son “You vicious, callous little bleeder!!” WED 03 - SAT 06 OCTOBER On the 4th January 1962, people across post war Britain welcomed into their sitting rooms two intriguing faces. BBC producers had sceptically given the go ahead for Hancock’s half hour to air a new social comedy. Through the grainy television sets of people up and down the county would emerge the long suffering father and son duo whose relationship, on and off the stage, would go down in infamy. Steptoe and son brought the heart-warming and gritty tale of two rag and bone men that couldn’t live with, or without each other, into the nations homes for twelve

years, finally ending in 1974. By then the show had became an institution that still strikes a cord with many today. Garry Darby and Mikey May are taking up the mantle and stepping into the hallowed shoes of the late great rival actors, Wilfred Brambell and Harry H Corbett at the Bradford Playhouse from the 3rd to the 6th of October 2018. It promises to be a playful and heartfelt show with laughter, nostalgia and just a little bit of venom. STEPTOE AND SON is at The Bradford Playhouse from 03 06 October For tickets visit www.bradfordplayhouse. org.uk

INTERVIEW

Black Falcon Black Falcon Are: (L-R) Richard Fisher: Guitar. Jony Hunter: Guitar. David Ayres: Vocals. Liam Hunter: Bass. Lee Durham: Drums.

Idle Talk was fortunate enough to meet with Black Falcon as they prepared to launch their brilliant new album, Turn Around and Face the Sun.

B

lack Falcon are one of Bradford’s best up and coming rock bands and are hot property right now.

Q How did the band get started? A We formed in November of 2015. Jony and Dave got things started and soon were joined by Jamie Robinson on drums, Liam and finally Rich joined in September 2016. Sadly jamie had to leave just before we launched the Living In Me EP. But we were lucky enough to find Lee pretty quickly, who did a great job in learning the whole set in about a month! Q How did you choose the name Black Falcon?

A That took about a month. We tried everything we could think of during that time. Pulling random words together and names of random objects and could find

nothing we were happy with. Then one day (and out of exhaustion) Dave saw an image of a Millennium Falcon from Star Wars that had been painted black (a picture he still has on his phone), and Black Falcon was chosen.

Q What do you hope to achieve next? A The next step for us is Academy gigs, good support slots and openings for festival tours.

Q Name your high points? A One of the high points has to have been supporting Puddle of Mudd at Trash earlier this year. And then seeing them playing in Austria a few days later wearing Black Falcon shirts on stage! Also playing at the Saltaire Dragon Boat Festival, with each song we played we saw the crowd getting bigger and bigger. We knew then we were do-

ing something special. Also listening back to the new album in the studio. We’re all really happy with how it sounds, each track is sounding great in it’s own right, nothing on it is a filler.

Q If you could play in any other band, alive or dead… Who would it be? A Rich: Rush Jony: Led Zeppelin Lee: Kamelot Liam: The Heavy Eyes Dave: Daft Punk.

Q Of the venues you’ve played so far, what is your favourite? A Trash has to be the best we’ve played at so far, but there was also a pub in Blackburn called The Charles Napier. That was a

brilliant gig. It was the first publicly owned pub in the country and on the opening day it was visited by Rob Halford from Judas Priest.

Q Where do you get the inspiration for your lyrics? A Each song is different. I try to put myself into the position of other people and visualize what they are going through and how they are feeling, a bit like an actor would when learning a part. I try to imagine their internal struggles and write about them in a way other people can relate to. BLACK FALCON are holding an album launch party at Trash on November 3. Look out for details will be in our next issue.

Turn Around and Face the Sun is out (release date TBC) and can be purchased from online from: MSH music group www.mshmusicgroup.com, the Black Falcon website www.black-falcon.co.uk On all online streaming sites And from the band themselves or at their gigs.

What the Macro? Mark Williams talks about essential nutrients. We all need to eat and fairly regularly to function well. Miss a meal and tiredness and a negative mood can quickly follow. But what are we eating in terms of nutrients and what do they do in the body? There are three main nutrients - known as macronutrients or macros. They are protein, carbohydrates and fats. Each are essential nutrients - a prolonged deficiency in one can lead to health issues. Protein is responsible for maintaining and building tissue in the body. These include muscle, hair and nails. The amino acids found in protein are the building blocks of tissue, some of which cannot be manufactured by your body, so we must get them from your food. It is also the slowest digested of the nutrients so can help with feeling satiated, particularly when controlling calorie intake with the goal of fat and weight loss. Good sources are meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. For vegetarians a range of meat free products, beans, nuts and cheeses can increase protein - you just have to be creative to get a good range of sources. Carbohydrates are an energy source. They are broken down into glucose for respiration, the process that releases energy in our cells. The excess is stored

Idle Talk | October | 2018

- either as glycogen in muscles, liver and brain for times of physical exertion or as fat. There are many sources of carbohydrates as these dominate the food choices available. These range from potatoes, pasta and rice, through vegetables and fruit to cereals, bread and sweet, sugary food. Fats are also an energy source and help the body carry out essential functions such as transport of vitamins and hormone production. In excess they are also stored by the body. Fats are often thought of as being bad but a range of sources contain good fats, including nuts, fish and olive oil.

We need then to balance our macros to function well, particularly if you have goals around body composition. Most people will benefit from increasing protein in their daily nutrition. 3 to 4 good portions works well. Look at each meal and aim for a portion of protein such as yoghurt or eggs at breakfast, meat or fish with other main meals and eat good whole food sources of carbohydrates and fats. Doing this the majority of the time and adding a good selection of fruit and vegetables will keep a healthy balance and make up for when we do choose to indulge from time to time.

Flu season is back! Protect yourself from Flu with a jab. Having Flu is no laughing matter. Influenza (better known as Flu) can be a very serious illness and is not like a common cold. It occurs every year and is especially common in winter. Symptoms usually last five to eight days, and can usually be treated with plenty of rest and drinking lots of fluids, but in some cases, especially with older people or those with certain medical conditions, it can be life threatening. It is important that you protect yourself and others from Flu by helping to prevent the spread of the virus and getting the flu vaccine if you are eligible. Having a Flu Jab just takes a minute and can in most cases remove

the risk of catching the virus for the rest of the year. Many people put off having the jab due to the inconvenience of having to book time off work to go to the doctors. But that’s not necessary. Did you know you don’t have to book an appointment at your doctor’s to get your flu jab? At Lloyds Pharmacy you can get your jab at a time that is convenient for you. Appointments are readily available, you can book over the telephone by calling 01274 612 055 or just walk in a request it. If you’re over 65, pregnant or living with a long term condition like asthma, diabetes or heart disease, you’re eligible for a free Flu Jab. If you aren’t eli-

gible then the cost is only £7! That’s less than a prescription! So protect yourself and those around you this month and book your Flu Jab at Lloyds Pharmacy today.

To book your flu jab contact LLOYDSPHARMACY at Idle Medical Centre, 440 Highfield Rd, Idle, Bradford, BD10 8RU or call 01274 612055

HOME & GARDEN

HOME & GARDEN IDLE TALK LOOKS AT WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME

October is a good time to plant fruit trees.

A

utumn can be an exciting time in the garden, many colourful leaves will be falling - not to mention the array of flowers and berries on display. A well-maintained garden will reach its peak in this season, but this does not mean it is time to put away your gardening tools. Old leaves need to be collected

in case they harbour pests and diseases. Sad-looking herbaceous plants need to be cut back to ground level. And now is the time to clean out ponds and fountains. While the weather is still fine, there are a number of jobs to deal with: Take out summer bedding, working bonemeal into the soil for winter planting. Plant up winter baskets

and pots, using plants such as pansies, primroses and violas to give your garden colour during the winter months. Include ivy and heucheras to give structure and colour. Even in the smallest garden you can enjoy pots of spring bulbs – but they need to be planted this month. Plant several layers of bulbs in a deep pot. Start with the tallest

SCATTER SOME MAGIC DUST Rockdust is 420 million years old, freshly ground, untreated, volcanic rock blended from various Scottish quarries. When scattered on the soil it boosts organic soil fertility giving bigger, healthier crops with higher nutritional value and better flavour. It increases pest resistance, will make

lawns lusher and helps to improve drought resistance. Sprinkle some on the compost heap to encourage microbial activity and increase the temperature for faster composting. It will minimise any odour, lock in nitrogen and help to improve fertility. Try a 450g sachet, or go for one of the big buckets or bags. Caption

bulbs, probably tulips in the bottom of the pot, followed by a layer of multi-purpose compost, next dwarf narcissi then another layer of compost and finish off with a topping of crocus. Water well, place on the patio then sit back and enjoy. October is a good time to plant fruit trees including soft fruit bushes such as blueberries. Apples and pears will grow well if planted at this time of year. Get them off to a really good start by preparing the planting hole well with Bulrush Multi-Purpose compost. Remember to stake the tree if it’s in an exposed position. Add bonemeal to the planting hole so nutrients will seep into the soil and stimulate good root growth.

SPORT

SPORT SPORTING EVENTS COMING UP IN THE REGION

Bradford City Runs

Back this year on Sunday, 28 October. The annual festival of running has a choice of three distances: a 5km, a 10km and a half marathon along with a special kids’ mile run, all on closed roads in and around City Park in the city centre. The route will take in parts of Little Germany and the Broadway Shop-

ping Centre, as well as the University of Bradford, Bradford College, City Hall and the multi-award winning City Park. Coun Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “This is an incredibly popular event with runners of all
