Darkside The Pink Floyd Show You Gotta Be Crazy not to go SAT 08 SEPTEMBER In their 13th year of touring, Darkside, the Pink Floyd Show, brings the You Gotta Be Crazy Tour to Ilkley. Seven musicians will deliver a show with empathy and passion, playing tracks from Pink Floyd’s massive back-catalogue, from the early magical days of founder Syd Barrett through to later iconic albums, renowned for their complex structures, such as Dark Side of The Moon. The emphasis will be on replicating the experience of Pink Floyd live on stage which many believe was Floyd at their very best. As would be

expected, the show incorporates a spectacular and dramatic laser light show and evocative images and animated sequences projected on a circular screen, which were key features of Pink Floyd’s live performances.

DARKSIDE THE PINK FLOYD SHOW is at The King’s Hall, Station Road, Ilkley, LS29 8HB, on Sat 8 September. For tickets call 01274 432000 or visit www.bradford-theatres.co.uk

Susie Dent presents The Secret Lives of Words Proving the English language is hilarious MONDAY 17 SEPTEMBER Take a journey into the curious, unexpected, and downright surreal origins of the words we use every day. Susie will retell the adventures that lie hidden within such words as lasagne (involving a chamber pot) and bugbear (a terrorising monster), and explain such oddities as the silent h in ghost and the mysterious disappearance of kempt, gormful, and ruly (and yes, you really can be gruntled). She will look to the lexicon of the past to fill some of today’s linguistic gaps – such as the frenzied fit of tidying we all do just as guests are about to descend

(that’s a scurryfunge). Alongside such forgotten stories you will hear Susie’s selection of the funniest moments from her 25 years on Countdown and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, as well as some startling results from eavesdropping on a

group of waiters. Each evening will include some of Susie’s favourite words from the towns and regions she visits, and she’ll be asking the audience for theirs. In fact, she’ll be welcoming any questions about word origins, usage irritations, the dreaded impact of Americanization, and the very future of our language in her very own ‘word surgery’. THE SECRET LIVES OF WORDS is at The King’s Hall, Station Road, Ilkley, LS29 8HB, on Mon 17 September. For tickets call 01274 432000 or visit www.bradford-theatres.co.uk

Blues Band 39 Years and Back for More!

WED 12 SEPTEMBER 2018 sees The Blues Band. with Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Tom McGuinness, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher, celebrate their 39th year together. Many of the Blues Band’s 21st century fans weren’t even born when these five virtuosos, already music industry veterans, decided to fly in the face of musical fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’. No one could have predicted that, 36 years on, they’d

still be dazzling audiences with their showmanship and virtuosity. About 20 albums and thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation around the world as one of the finest exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms. Mojo Rising Bradford band Psychlona sign to Cursed Tongue Records and Ripple Music If you were able to get to last month’s IdleFest at the Brewery Tap or HeavyFest at the 1 in 12 club you would have seen why these guys are causing such a stir in the music world right now. Bradford stoner rockers Psychlona’s heavy grooving debut album ‘Mojo Rising’ is due for worldwide release on November 30th. The band impressed both Cursed Tongue Records and Ripple Music on an immense level when their debut album hit the online web-spheres back in the spring this year. A hard-hitting, heavydriving, fuzz-drenched foundation forms the basis on

which flares and outbursts of guitar-swirls spirals to another dimension in time and space. The album — nine songs/50 minutes running from “Stone” to “Beakfoot” with a riffy, desertstretched-out but still weighted course worthy of the band’s moniker — hits with a bit of Clutchy blues in

“Big River” and a whole lot of early Fu Manchu-style roll in “Juju,” but it’s ultimately the psychedelic thread that ties it all together, whether it’s the brash pub-style riffage of “Down in the Valley” or jam-into-shove-into-jaminto-slowdown groove in “Burning Cave,” a spacious lead guitar tone that conjures impossible reaches no matter how much crunch seems to be surrounding. And make no mistake, here’s plenty of

crunch to go around. If spacy, psyched out stoner rock floats your boat, look no further. Mojo Rising ought to hit an audible solar plexus on any fan of Spaceslug, Kyuss, Dozer, Fu Manchu and Monster Magnet. MOJO RISING will be out on CD and digital via Ripple Music and vinyl via Cursed Tongue Records on November 30th. For a preview go online to www.psychlona.com

On a diet… again… Mark Williams gives his tips about healthy eating. The term diet usually describes the restrictions we put on our eating in order to fit into a new dress, get beach ready or lose that holiday weight. Diet ‘wisdom’ is offered by friends and the media, ‘no carbs before Marbs’, ‘five small meals a day’, ‘never miss breakfast’ and a whole host of other plans. However short term success is often followed by slipping back to the original starting point. One thing these strategies have in common is that they all reduce the amount of calories we consume. Everything we eat and drink contains calories which our bodies need to function properly. We have an energy balance of calories in and calories out. In simple terms, if we use more energy than we consume then we will use the energy already stored in the body and weight decreases over time. Conversely if we use less energy than we are consuming the excess is stored and body weight increases. At the end of the day, no matter what diet plan you choose, the reason it will work is if you are using more energy than you are consuming. Most people have heard about calories in vs calories out but here’s where it can get tricky. If all you do is dramatically restrict your calories your body will not

Idle Talk | September | 2018

have the energy it needs to perform well. Over time, this will have a negative impact on your weight loss and overall health. As with many things in life the key is balance. Your body needs calories to function so let’s look at how you can start making changes that will bring you long term results. Small changes have a big impact… over time. Start by

substituting sugary cereal and pastry for scrambled eggs or a green smoothie, swap that lunchtime sandwich and crisps for a tuna salad (skip the creamy dressing!) and enjoy a delicious chicken stir fry in place of fried chicken and chips for your evening meal. Remember, no crazy plans are needed, just consistent healthy choices will start you on the road to diet success.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Idle’s best kept secret Idle Talk takes a look around at Barkhill Dental Clinic Idle Talk went to Barkhill Dental Clinic and met Alex, one of the dentists at the practice. He showed us around the very impressive practice, an Idyllic, stone built house which is a hidden gem in the middle of Idle, based just off Highfield road. This year gives rise to two celebrations for the practice; Barkhill House is 300 years old this year, Dr Wellings and his team have been delivering dental care to the people of Yorkshire for the past 30.

Q When did you join the Barkhill team? A I joined in January after working for a number of years in a mixed NHS practice that had some private and Denplan patients. Q What made you want to join Barkhill? A I wanted to improve and explore dentistry done to an exceptional standard and felt that Barkhill had a great reputation for high standards. I came and met Dr Wellings and we bonded well and I found that he could help me achieve my ambition of completing dentistry to a very high standard; he agreed to mentor me and help me achieve my goals. Q What do you about dentistry?

enjoy

A I really enjoy every aspect to be honest, from dental education to more complex procedures. I have a interest in digital dentistry and things at the forefront of technology

and the cutting edge in terms of dentistry moving forward. I enjoy a number of aspects including restorative dentistry and aesthetics dentistry for example changing black fillings to white ones, and improving people’s confidence through improving there smile. Also treating people that are particularly anxious of dentistry and taking them through the stages to being confident again.

Q What is digital dentistry? A It is the future in my opinion of dentistry, we are now using 3D scanners for impressions of teeth and also treatment planning. This allows us to also do things like crowns and restorations in the same day rather than patients having to come back for second appointments and take time out their busy schedules and also no need for temporaries during this period. Using CAD/CAM machines to do this in which we can design our own fillings and crowns before printing them.

Q What do you enjoy at Barkhill? A Many things, one of the main things is the fantastic team, we all work really closely from the reception team, nurses, hygienist, dentists and orthodontists. This multi skilled team allow us to offer our patients a full complement of treatments ensuring that every aspect of dental care is catered for at Barkhill. There is a great atmosphere at Barkhill, we have a very patient centred team all driven by providing superb results. I enjoy working closely with Dr Wellings in reconstruction cases but similarly enjoy treating anxious and nervous patients, some of which may not have seen a dentist for a number of years, it is always so fulfilling to see a previously nervous patient conquer the fear and achieve the smile they never though possible. Q What is the normal patient journey at Barkhill? A To begin with, patients

usually book a FREE consultation with me, we have an initial discussion to understand what they would like to improve or change about their smile. Once we have established this, the clinical team discuss the best treatment plan for the patient, a ‘treatment plan’ is provided to the patient, which could consist of multiple options to demonstrate the various methods available to achieve long lasting, predictable results. What are you waiting for book your free assessment with Alex today?

FOOD & DRINK DON’T JUST STICK TO YOUR USUAL HAUNTS, TRY SOMEWHERE NEW TO EAT!

Rajshahi Indian Restaurant Try something different Rajshahi is situated on Idle’s Thorpe Garth next to the local Co-op. An easy to find location with plenty of free parking. The restaurant first opened it’s doors in 1995 and is one of the longest established in the area. The interior is spacious and nicely furnished over two levels with a comfy waiting area and a well stocked fully licenced bar. We paid a visit midweek as weekends at Rajshahi can get very busy. We were welcomed in by Babul and offered a choice of tables. Unlike many restaurants the tables were large enough for four of us to sit with plenty of room. There’s nothing worse than feeling like you are sat on someone’s lap when you are trying to eat. We ordered our starters which were a Prawn Puri, Tandoori Mixed Kebab, Spicy Chicken Wings and Vegeta-

ble Samosas and tucked into Popadoms and pickles while we waited for them to be cooked. Each of the dishes was excellent and the chicken cooked so well the meat simply fell off the bone. On to the mains and we all wanted to try something we’d not had before. The staff were very accommodating as one of our party was vegetarian and another a dedicated carnivore! We ordered a mix of naan breads as sides which were clearly freshly made, a Prawn Rogan Josh which was excellent, and a more traditional and eye-wateringly spicy Chicken Tikka Madras. For the other mains we went off the menu and meals were made to our request. The veggie option was a Saag Channa Korai, a delicious curry of spinach and chick peas. Our carnivore put himself into the hands of our waiter and was presented with a chicken curry with ginger and garlic. After years of going to Indian restaurants, (and admittingly ordering the same safe meal) he had an experience that he didn’t think could happen, and now has a new favourite dish! In fact this was sampled by the rest of the party and agreed to be the star dish of the evening! We all agreed the food was excellent, the service

was great and the evening was a success. So why not try something different, Rajshahi is well worth a visit, and who knows, you may find yourself with a new favourite curry! RAJSHAHI 49 Thorp Garth Bradford BD10 9LD 01274 622662 www.rajshahi.co.uk

Boost for Women’s Rugby Bradford bids for Rugby League World Cup 2021

In partnership with Bradford Bulls RLFC and Keighley Cougars RLFC, Bradford Council has submitted its bid to be part of the Rugby League World Cup in 2021. If the Bradford bid is selected venues throughout the district could be used to host matches, team base camps and training camps. Odsal Stadium, the

home of the Bulls, would be used to host matches between women’s teams from across eight countries, with their state of the art training facility at Tong High School being used as a training camp. Base camps for the international teams could include hotels across the district. Bradford has a long The Bradford Bulls Women’s Side history and heritage of Rugby League, from Odsal stadium hosting the match with the largest attendance on record, to the Keighley Cougars being the venue for the first televised international game. The women’s game in Bradford is also strong with the Bulls Women’s team the current Super League and Challenge Cup winners, as well as 10 players from the team also selected for and played in the England side which made it to the semi-finals of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “Our district is no stranger to hosting major international sporting events, with Ilkley’s Cow and Calf Rocks a stage finish location for both the women’s and men’s Tour de Yorkshire this year. Having the women’s element of the Rugby League World Cup in 2021 would be great for Bradford. This tournament really does bring people together from different cultures across the world and being a host would

bring great benefits to the district as well as provide an excellent opportunity to showcase the district on the world stage. “Working with our partners the Bradford Bulls and the Keighley Cougars who both have strong women’s teams the aim, as well as giving a warm welcome for these top class athletes and their fans, is to provide a sustainable legacy, especially for girls and women competing in the game across the district.” Ken Jones, Strategic and Commercial Consultant at Bradford Bulls, said: “If our bid is successful our focus will be on engaging local schools and community groups to encourage both boys and girls to take part in rugby league events, and we also want to get into the South Asian community, where we feel that there is untapped talent.”
