Harrogate Road and New Line Junction Improvement Scheme Plans to improve significant routes within Bradford’s transport network The junction is a key commuter route between Bradford, Rawdon and Harrogate, and is the primary access to and Leeds Bradford Airport. New Line is a major route between Keighley, Shipley, Bingley and Leeds. On an average weekday, an estimated 40,000 vehicles use this junction and often experience lengthy delays. The plans aim to create a new P-loop junction, to reduce congestion and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Plans include widening of both Harrogate Road and New Line on all four sections of the cross roads with new cycling lanes, pe-

destrian islands and signal controlled crossings. The start of the roadworks has been delayed by the need to secure compulsory purchase orders for 58 plots of land, but is due to be completed by February 2020 and is expected to cost £6.8 million. Knowledge Is Power Akala, Lowkey & LayFullStop are at Bradford Literature Festival FRIDAY 06 JULY Join award-winning vocal artists Akala, Lowkey, and Layfullstop for an iconic evening of music and spoken word performance. Akala is famed for lyricism that combines influences from across music and literature with passionately felt political convictions. As comfortable reciting Shakespeare as he is performing on Radio 1Xtra’s Fire in the Booth, he is a unique talent. Akala is a BAFTA and MOBO award-winning hip-hop artist, writer, and social entrepreneur, and the co-founder of the Hip-Hop Shakespeare Company. He has appeared at numerous festivals in the UK and internationally, and

has led innovative projects in the arts, education and music worldwide. He regularly appears on television and in print journalism, speaking on subjects such as race, music, and youth engagement. British-Iraqi rapper Lowkey is one of the biggest names of the UK hip-hop

scene, known for his bold music that gives voice to the most pertinent issues of the day. Fusing politically charged lyrics and deft dissection of topics such as race, war, global poverty and politics with anthemic choruses and unrelentingly energetic performance, Lowkey is a towering figure of the scene who renews the old tradition of conscious hip-hop activism for the war on terror generation. LayFullStop is a female artist from Manchester whose unique tracks mixing hip-hop and soul have built her a cult online following. AKALA, LOWKEY & LAYFULLSTOP are at The Alhambra Theatre, Morley St, Bradford BD7 1AJ, on Friday 06 July. For tickets call 01274 432000 or visit

It has light weight texture that doesn’t feel greasy or heavy on the skin, formulated with Illuminating Red Algae extract that’s high in Vitamin C that creates a healthy and even complexion. Sharp dressed man We take a look at the comeback of the hot towel wet shave. I’m sure many people have noticed that wet shaving is making a come back. But why? And how is it better than using a modern razor? Why would you want a hot towel on your face? Well, lets find out. One of the main reasons it’s becoming popular again is because of just how nostalgic it is. A lot of people remember seeing their fathers and grandfathers going to the barbers or standing in the bathroom using a double edged razor or a straight edge and just that alone triggers memories of the past that many people can relate to. There are health benefits too. You get a lot less irritation, so

it creates a massive improvement on your skin, its softer on your wallets too, at Lincoln Classic Barbers on The Green in Idle you can get a hot towel wet shave for only £15. It’s environmentally friendly AND it gives you a few moments of relaxation and comfort that’s priceless. The sensation of just having the hot towel on your face is enough to relax even the most active of people.

Idle Talk | July | 2018

A few months ago many people set themselves New Year’s resolutions, often only keeping them until the end of January! If you are still persevering well done you are in a small minority that keep any resolutions, especially those involving food and exercise. As with many goals, starting out is the easy bit, continuing through the inevitable difficulties is where the struggle really is. A big night out, cold mornings that trap us under duvet and the scales not moving are just some of the reasons that cause us to slow down or give up entirely. These are, though, legitimate things affecting anyone with health and fitness goals. It is how we respond to the bumps in the journey that is the difference be-

tween reaching the goal or being back to square one. That is where keeping it simple is important. Try adopting these simple principles and take steps to a healthier and fitter you! 1) Move more 2) Eat a bit better 3) Enjoy 1) and 2) 4) Keep going with 1) and 2) long enough to see and feel the results There is so much health and fitness advice (good and bad) readily available through all media chan-

nels we should be the healthiest generation ever. Yet the opposite is true! Find an activity you enjoy - walk, cycle, play in the park with your kids, use a fitness app - just do something you enjoy and you will be able to keep going. When it comes to eating habits the key is sustainability and simple swaps. It will be a lifelong struggle to eat a certain “healthy” diet if it is time consuming to prepare and unenjoyable. Swap sugary cereal for oats and fruit, the lunch time sandwich for a salad option, forgo a pudding a couple of evenings and drink a little less each weekend and the changes are more sustainable and realistic. So keep it simple… seriously - you can enjoy getting healthier and fitter if it is enjoyable and sustainable.

Idle Talk takes a gastronomic journey down the high street to find out more about the wide range of mouth watering delights on offer. Starting at the top of the hill is the multi award winning chippy, TOWNGATE FISHERIES. They have a wide range of other meals and sundries including kebabs and curries as well. We opted for The Arabia. Oh Yum! try it. Their meal deals are great value for money and if you decide to order online at w w w. p i z z a n a p o l e n a i d l e . com. you’ll also receive a free fudge cake! Well there’s always room for dessert isn’t there? Next we came to QUICKBITES sandwich shop on the corner, ideal for a lunchtime snack. The owner has been a chef for almost 30 years and sells curries as well as sandwiches. He comes recommended for his panini’s and wraps, chicken tikka wraps being very popular with the locals. Then we turned right and wandered down Bradford Road where we found The IDLE SANDWICH COMPANY where we sat down and had some tea and delicious fresh cream cakes. We also had the meal deal to take out for later. This includes a sandwich, can of pop and a

packet of crisps or choccy bar for only £3.50. Then we walked round to Thorpe Garth where we visited RAJSHAHI Indian Restaurant. The food here was delicious and the staff very welcoming. They are also fully licenced with a well stocked bar! On Sunday afternoon you’ll find it’s always busy as they offer an Indian Buffet from 3.30pm until 10.00 pm. At £8.95 per adult and £5.95 per child for all you can eat this is fantastic value for money and offers a wide range of starters, curry’s, naan bread, rice and sides to suit every palette. They provide a take away service too with free delivery if you spend £8 or more. days that England play in the World Cup. Let’s hope they go all the way to the final! Next we came to The IDLE BEERHOUSE. As well as offering a wide range of wines, spirits, beers, ciders and cask ales, from Wednesday to Sunday they offer a range of freshly made food sourced from local suppliers. We opted for the Allotment Brunch at £7.50. Opposite the Beerhouse are 4 takeaway outlets next to each other. First we found DRAGON CHEF Chinese Takeaway, and next door is IDLE SPICY KITCHEN, offering Indian, Halal and American/Italian style dishes. Here you will also find authentic home style traditional curries along with modern recipes with their own twist. The fresh chicken Balti is based on a family recipe passed down

through generations. Next door is IDLE BALTI which was established in 1997, and was the first Indian takeaway in the village, and has been very popular ever since. Here they specialise in takeaway curries and use only fresh meat and vegetables from local suppliers. One more door down we find the IDLE PIZZA AND CURRY HOUSE who, as the name suggests, offer a mix of Indian and American/Italian style meals. After all that we needed to sit down and relax for a while, so we opted for a nice cup of coffee at the IDLE LOUNGE COFFEE SHOP, where combined with the best tasting coffee for miles around you will also find a wide range of snacks, sandwiches and cakes. The cream teas are heavenly. The Idle Lounge has a contemporary interior and a very relaxing atmosphere. The perfect place to wind down with your friends or family... Oh sorry! What’s that? Life is like a sandwich... you have to fill it with the best ingredients. The humble sandwich has come a long way since the 1700’s when Lord John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich decided he couldn’t leave the gambling table and asked the casino waiters to put some meat between two slices of bread. Well that may not be a totally accurate historical account but is interesting none the less. Who would have thought back then that two slices of bread could contain such deliciousness! The sandwich has since become a staple of the British diet, so I was keen to try the goodies on offer at the Idle Sandwich Company on Idle’s Bradford Road. Mark and Sharon took over the business two years ago following Mark’s 30+ years working in the catering industry, still retaining the same brilliant staff. It’s safe to say there isn’t much Mark doesn’t know about how to make a delicious meal. There is much more than sandwiches on the menu however. From 7.30am you’ll find local tradesmen enjoying a fabulous fry up, the Belly Buster is only £6.00 and there’s enough on the plate to more than

Breakfast sandwiches come with free tea or coffee and school kids receive a discount. And if you don’t see what you want on the menu, they will always try and accommodate. Delivery is available to local customers and is free (within 3 miles) with orders over £6.00. They also have free wifi and offer a loyalty card scheme. Their produce is all sourced from local providers or made freshly on the premises. Their home made cheesecake is divine! They also specialise in outside catering for any occasion and any amount of people. If you have a corporate event, birthday

Used car checklist Thinking of buying a used car? Here’s Idle Talk’s list of things to look for It’s not just about rocking up and liking the look of the car - instead you need to look at everything, from the paintwork to the tyres, seatbelts and headlights. Here’s our list of top things to check: MILEAGE. The average covered is around 10,000 miles a year, so if the odometer’s figure appears wildly out for its age, ask why. If the answer doesn’t stack up, be suspicious. Crooks may have ‘clocked’ the odometer. You can also check the last service for the mileage to see if this is in line with the figure. Check the pedals, an over worn accelerator pedal might suggest the car has done a higher mileage that stated. An HPI

check will also check this, as well as tell you if the car’s previously been written off, or cutand-shut (parts from two cars welded together). Watch out for category D cars too. These have been in crashes previously, and often cost £1,000s less than you’d expect. OVERALL CONDITION. Cast a beady eye over the car’s condition, crouching down to look for scratches and dents, and check doors open and close properly. REPAIRS. See if there are any signs of poor repair, such as gaps between body panels after crash damage. CHECK THE OIL. Do this by lifting out the dipstick to see if the level is correct.

THE ENGINE. Look at the engine for signs of oil or water leaks, as well as the surrounding parts – and look under the car for any signs of leaks too. TEST THE RADIO. Plus all other gadgets to make sure they work. CHECK LIGHTS! Turn them on and check they work, including the indicators. Also check you can open and close the

windows easily. IS IT SAFE? Vitally, does the car seem in safe condition to drive. Trust your gut – if the seats are sagging and the car looks like it’s ready for the scrap heap, continue your search elsewhere. TYRES Check for tread and inflation. Don’t be fooled by shiny tyres. Many dealers will add a coat of tyre paint to make them appear new.
