daily occurrence at one of the states most traveled intersections. The jams are now exacerbated by major construction activity at the southeast Denver corner that borders Cherry Hills Village. The Colorado Department of Transportation is involved in a major reconstruction project that began July 7 and will run for 20 days on a 24-hour clock, seven days a week until the major work is completed. The work is advancing to the second of four phases for this $1.7 million project that will run through September this year. Prior to construction, this intersection had more than 125,000 vehicles pass through each day. Many motorists have found alternative routes to temporarily bypass the traffic jam. Motorists have reported there is traffic and major delays periodically throughout the day and into the evening. One couple returning from Denver International Airport shared that they experienced significant traffic delays at 7 p.m. last week. Construction team members proclaimed there has been limited traffic delays due to extended times of a green light for east and westbound Hampden. Currently, east and westbound traffic have more “green time,” as the stoplights at the intersection have turning restrictions. There are no left or right turns permitted from Hampden onto Colorado Boulevard in either direction because construction crews are pouring concrete on the north side of the intersection. The access into Cherry Hills is closed for the time being during Phase 1 of the construction period, as traffic is being rerouted within the Village. Motorists wising to turn

spokesperson did not reply prior to deadline. “We are on schedule and may beat the project schedule by one day for phase one,” said Tom Fanning, a supervisor that came out of retirement to supervise the road construction for Chato’s Concrete, LLC. “We don’t worry about the weather, it is what it is, it’s summer.”

Nightmares for neighborhood residents

“Ash Street has now turned into Colorado Boulevard,” said Courtney Fry, a mother of two young children who lives a block away from the major road construction project. “It would have been nice to be notified in advance.” Fry’s husband found out de-

tails by going to CDOT’s website, www.coloradodot.info. “My husband is a light sleeper and definitely hears all of the beeping sounds of all the trucks,” said Fry. “The traffic and safety of the kids are the biggest concerns.” Last week on a hot afternoon, cars whizzed down Ash Street easily exceeding the 25 miles per hour speed limit. This Denver community has numerous young children living in the neighborhood and playing at the adjacent Magna Carta Park on the northeast corner of the intersection. Three community churches at the intersection, First Plymouth Congregational Church, First Church of the Nazarene and the First Universalist Church of Denver, have access during the construction phases.

By Peter Jones A 52-year-old Littleton man was sentenced last week to 10 years in prison for possession of child pornography. Calvin Dawdy was also ordered by a federal judge to pay $6,000 in restitution to his victims and to serve five years on supervised release after completion of his prison sentence. U.S. Attorney John Walsh announced the sentence. “Lengthy prison sentences should send a deterrent message that possessing child pornography is a serious crime with serious consequences,” he said in a statement. Dawdy pleaded guilty to the charges in April after being indicted by a grand jury last year. He was sentenced July 11 by District Court Judge Marcia Krieger. According to court documents, Dawdy possessed more than 15,000 computer files that depicted children, mostly girls younger than 12. In 2010, Dawdy unknowingly shared some of the files with undercover federal agents. The investigation into Dawdy was conducted by the FBI’s Violent Crimes Against Children Program. “Our nation’s children are the most vulnerable victims,” Special Agent Thomas Ravenelle said in the announcement. “The FBI remains committed to working with our state and local law enforcement partners and the United States Attorney’s Office to aggressively investigate all cases involving the sexual exploitation of children.”
