3 2012 WAS… WELL, GREAT. NOT “ERMAHGERD! MIND! TOTALLY! BLOWN!” great, but great nonetheless, loud and flashy as always, sometimes a bit controversial (Agent 47 slaughtering fetish nuns – what’s up with that?) and sometimes a bit too violent (Sorry Warren Spector, but we cheered at the end of The Last of Us’ demo too). All in all, it was great. It was interesting to see Nintendo trying to move forward with Wii U, expanding the gaming experience (in all dimensions). And it was interesting to see Microsoft and Sony doing the same, but without leaving their comfort zones – Microsoft with the SmartGlass technology, using a smartphone or a tablet, and Sony using PS Vita as a super-intelligent, overpriced controller for the PS3. And of course, the games: we love it so much when someone can keep a secret and surprise us at the show! This E3 was full of excellent surprises, so in the aftermath of this year’s event one thing is certain: we’ll have lots of awesome games to play this year, regardless of platform or genre. What’s more: we’re already booked for 2013 as well. Even the next-gen is around the corner, and if we have to wait for the next Xbox or PlayStation to play games like Star Wars 1313, so be it. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we still have a lot to do first. You, for example, still need to read our game previews and reviews. We won’t keep you any longer, enjoy the magazine! mazur

E3 2012: NEXT YEAR YOU’LL COME OF AGE E
3 (ELECTRONIC ENTERTAINMENT EXPO) HAS BEEN VISITED BY OBSESSED JOURNALISTS AND THE EXPERTS OF THE GAMING INDUSTRY FOR 17 YEARS to survey the latest developments publishers and developers proudly present. E3 has indeed become legendary: a place where you can meet everyone who counts. This year three of us set out to explore the maze of the stands installed at the Convention Center in Los Angeles to be able to give a more detailed picture of the most important annual event of the gaming industry. Let’s begin with some statistics: this year
g1206 - E3-ENG.indd 6
the exhibition was visited by nearly 46 thousand people who pumped almost 40 million dollars into the economy of Los Angeles. Why are these numbers so significant? Well, the leaders of the city have decided to destroy the western hall of the Convention Center to make space for the new soccer stadium, as the soccer-craze seems to have spread to the US as well. This means, however, that the remaining space won’t be enough for E3, so they will have to find another venue. This decision is yet to be finalized, but the fact that the organizers haven’t released the exact location of the 2013 E3 is definitely a telltale sign.
But now, we should rather focus on the present. It’s safe to say that there were a lot of visitors and the exhibition as a whole wasn’t at all boring. It’s true that the publishers seemed to have been going for safety, but it’s understandable: after all, who would want to come out with something groundbreaking just one year before the release of the eighth-generation consoles. All three console manufacturers wanted to impress the audience, but perhaps it was Sony who eventually managed to steal the show with his brilliant new titles (Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us). As for Microsoft, their only weapon was Halo 4 this
SZONJA @E3 2012 I sure did see a lot at E3 this year. The greatest attraction in the exhibition hall was probably the nearly 40-metre wide screen of Activision along with what it showed. Of course all major publishers were pretty convincing and the size of their stands suggested what it was supposed to suggest... I was happy to see that there was a separate section for the indie developments that are getting more and more popular, and I also liked the exhibition of the artwork. But what really blew me away was the stand of Videogame History Museum with all the ancient Ataris, arcade games and the fully-furnished living room... Well, I may be getting old... It was also amazing to see Star Wars: 1313 in action, even if it was only the demo. The only annoying thing was that I had to queue for hours to see the presentations or to have some hands-on experience with some of the games, so in three days I could survey only a mere fraction of the games I hoped to have a closer look at.

year, but they also presented new technologies and ways of providing content that go far beyond gaming and they seem to want Kinectequipped Xboxes to shift more towards home entertainment (Internet Explorer for Xbox, Smart Glass). Last but not least, Nintendo has come out with his much anticipated Wii U that is considered to be the forerunner of the eighth-generation consoles. All that said we found it strange that half a year before the official release we couldn’t find
at the and we marvelled At Bethesda‛s st replicas from Skyrim or d amazingly detaile ed (see above). Dishonor
out how much the device will cost, when exactly it will be available, and there was no information about the hardware either. It’s all the more disappointing if you consider the fact that many must have bought their plane tickets to get to know more about Nintendo’s brand new device. Similarly, those who came to see the much expected PC-related developments of the publishers also had to leave with a bitter taste in their mouths (We were especially interested in Command & Conquer:
Generals 2.) The good news is that with the current consoles getting outdated PCs definitely gained a point in terms of technology, so much so, that Watch Dog, considered to be the biggest hit by many, has only been showcased on PC (well, it probably wouldn’t have looked all that stunning on a console, anyway). Apart from all that there was a lot to see and we weren’t for a second bored. We collected our impressions in the following little “logbook” for you. Have fun!
What I liked the most at E3 this year? David Cage. It’s no secret that I have been waiting for the new game of Quantic Dream, but what I’ve got was beyond my wildest dreams. The fact that the producer himself is presenting a game for the press three days on, without any rest, and that at the end of the third day he still answers all the questions in as open and friendly a way as if he has just begun, is definitely a real treasure in this world. I could go on about the showfloor and the countless games, but once you’ve had the opportunity to talk to the creator of one of the best games of all times, everything seems sort of bland. Just look at the photo... I’m grinning like a toddler. Anyway, it is a bit strange for me to hug a man. On the other hand, I had a few negative experiences as well: I think E3 is probably going the wrong way. There are less machines and way too many journalists and presentations. We don’t exactly go there to wait 20 minutes to watch 15 gameplay videos. We want to play, instead of watching others do so.
MAZUR @E3 2012
Though many are disappointed saying that the gaming industry has become soulless and is only after money and sensation, I for one am not that pessimistic. It’s true that there were less exciting games than I hoped, and there were a few titles that I could only rate with a protocol-smile before escaping quickly, but I was also pleasantly surprised at times. I saw a few truly great ideas and I think we shouldn’t give up on development even if there are no groundbreaking technological improvements currently. And talking to developers is always a pleasure: they are obsessed with what they are doing, they believe in their games, and they are full of visions.

We haven’t expected it to appear at E3, or if we did, we were totally blown away by the stunning visuals and the atmosphere during the presentation.
An exciting title that is way above the average and is worth keeping an eye on. We are convinced that these will turn out to be truly memorable games.
There are no groundbreaking technological improvements here, but you will still get exactly what you expect. The developers have done an adequate job.
This one is for games that would probably leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth. The publishers do want to sell them nevertheless, but we are there to block the marketing-attack.

EEP DOWN WE HOPED THAT ON THIS E3 WE COULD FINALLY CHECK OUT THE NEXT GENERATION OF CONSOLES, BUT THAT DIDN’T HAVE MUCH CHANCE OF HAPPENING. Well, Microsoft didn’t disappoint and did everything they could to convince us that there is still unexploited potential in the Xbox 360 console – not in performance, but in the services.
OFFERING MORE In the almost one and a half hours long presentation they showed us all the new ways in which we can use the online contents in the future. Unfortunately most of the services won’t be available in Hungary, but there’s still hope that once we get to watch HBO on our Xbox too. Instead of mourning over this let’s talk about that the company launches Xbox Music with over 30 million tunes and
g1206 - E3-ENG.indd 8
a personalized exercise program in cooperation with Nike. And then they finally introduced their biggest hit of the event: the SmartGlass technology will allow us to connect our smartphones, tablets and Windows 8 based PCs with our good old Xboxes. Our mobile devices (Android and iOS too) could provide a co-screen while watching television programs and thanks to the new Internet Explorer on the console we’ll be able to browse the net as well. Instead of the standard mouse and keyboard combo, we’ll use the phone’s touch screen to navigate in the menu, which – along with the Bing’s voice command system – seemed like a pretty good thing to do. Last but not least we have to mention that with a simple innovation Microsoft managed to draw the teeth of Wii U, since our smartphones and tablets will serve the same purpose as the new touchscreen controller of Ninten-
do: it will expand the game experience iencce ien c in certain games by displaying useful efull efu information (maps, hints) during gameplay.
Microsoft‛s SmartGlass technology is the competitor of the Wii U controller. No doubt it has a lot of potential.
DOESN’T MAKE YOU MOVE Probably there are still games out there for the fans of Kinect, but in the he press conference Microsoft quietly pushed them in the background. Sony’s E3 2012 press conference
THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE T
HERE WAS A LOT OF HYPE AROUND SONY’S PRESS CONFERENCE. We secretly hoped that they will reveal something about the next generation of consoles or at least about the future price of the PS Vita, but they didn’t. The tired journalist crowd could rest a little on the traditional Sony-picnic before the press conference. Instead of hours of queuing (just like at the other companies’ conferences), the reception with food, drinks and music from a pretty good DJ was refreshing. Sony kicked off the presentation with their biggest hit, the latest masterpiece from Quantic Dream called Beyond: Two Souls – but we’ll talk about that later. We weren’t particularly enthused by the presentation of the casual titles, such as PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale (let’s just blame that on the jetlag), but we woke up when we heard the word: Wonderbook. The program itself wasn’t
g1206 - E3-ENG.indd 9
too interesting, unlike the technology itself. Using the PS Move system, Sony creates interactive books that you can read on your TV. The first book, from the writer of the Harry Potter series, is J.K. Rowling’s Book of Spells.
WHAT ABOUT VITA? It turned out that Sony would like to sell another 8 million consoles in addition to the already sold 2 million in the next nine months - without dropping the price. In order to do so they will release two major games on PS Vita, one of them being Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, which unfortunately wasn’t demoed during the presentation. We did get to see Assassin’s Creed: Liberation, featuring a female protagonist and gameplay optimised for the PS Vita. While we’re talking about Assassin’s Creed, we have to tell you about the most spectacular part of the conference:
tty The journalists are pre ir the gossipy people – it‛s in ence fer nature. Before the con all the it was fun to listen to s of rumours: the (fake) newed as Diablo III to be releas title a PlayStation 3 exclusive n spread like a wildfire. Eve the , Oh it! ed iev bel we almost disappointment.
the first showing of AC III’s sea battle. Far Cry 3’s four player cooperative mode was pretty impressive too – seemingly (and fortunately) Ubisoft is working quite closely with Sony this year. The show was closed by two other major releases: Kratos in God of War: Ascension will continue his adventures in the darkest corners of Greek mythology, but the most impressive title was the new game from Naughty Dog, the creators of the Uncharted series. The Last of Us was spectacular, and put the cherry on the top of the sundae of awesomeness that was Sony’s presentation. Another piece of interesting information: just like Microsoft, Sony has plans on expanding the game experience from TVs to handheld devices, using the PS Vita as a kind of intelligent controller. Unfortunately there wasn’t too many details of this.

known brand, once famous for a superb, simulation-like experience, became just another action game churned out en masse.
THE SEER The US Army launched a modernisation programme under the name Future Combat Systems in 2003. Under this programme, future soldiers were called Future Force Warriors and their development centre was named the US Army Soldier System Center (the inspiration must have come from the “incomparable” work of L. Ron Hubbard). In addition to the truly puke-coloured camouflage known as multicam, the project has also produced some more sensible results, such as upgrading the equipment of the infantry with ultra-modern devices. Owing to the project, sometime within the next five to ten years, Kevlar will be substituted by intelligent armours built
on ferromagnetic microparticles and nanoparticles. These particles thicken nanoseconds before the impact of a bullet, thus preventing such projectiles from causing damage to the body. What’s more, some units have already been provided with a system that is able to monitor the physical condition of the soldiers in real time: it can not only measure their blood pressure, heart rate and brain activity, but it is also able to regulate their body temperature. So having said that, it is fairly surprising that “Future Soldier” has only been added to the title Ghost Recon quite recently. After all, the strongest suit of the series has always been presenting futuristic war technology in a spectacular and entertaining fashion. In fact, all the developers had to do was to predict the technological advancement of the art of war for an 8-10 year period, and then build a product on it.
DIRTY BOMBS Not that many of us know too much about it, but when it comes to drug smugglers or guerrillas fighting for fairly obscure political objectives, Nicaragua somehow always seems to be a safe setting, if only for the way it sounds. In the opening scene of the game a unit (under the codename Predator) led by Joe Ramirez is busy fighting against a gang of Nicaraguan arms dealers. Thanks to their state of the art equipment and unprecedented skill they easily eliminate the enemy, but when the time comes to seize the illegal weapons they are after, one of the trucks is hiding a dirty bomb instead. It goes off, as intended. The term ‘dirty bomb’ has not been coined by the authors of the game: it is an existing word describing weapons of mass destruction that are not only powerful enough to kill multiple people, but due to the radiological material they contain they also contaminate

Review SPEC OPS: THE LINE
Welcome to Dubai
THE LINE H
E WHO FIGHTS WITH MONSTERS SHOULD LOOK TO IT THAT HE HIMSELF DOES NOT BECOME A MONSTER. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you. The above lines were written by Friedrich Nietzsche in 1886, and even though there are quite a few thought-provoking ideas attributed to one of the most influential philosophers ever, it may still sound surprising that his name is associated with video games. Back in the golden age of sandbox RPGs, Baldur’s Gate started with the above quotation, but what it has to say is as relevant with Spec Ops: The Line as it was with BioWare’s legendary title.
THE DAMNED 33RD The name refers to Colonel John Konrad’s volunteers who disobeyed direct orders and decided to stay in Dubai to help the civilians left to their own devices. The rich and the powerful tried to save their hides (many of their planes had crashed in the attempt) until it becomes clear that it’s by no means the usual sandstorm that sweeps through the city, and it will take a lot more than just a clean-up to bring everything back to normal. Hours turned into days, and the people didn’t know who to turn to for help. This was when Colonel Konrad organised a convoy of the 1300 women, elderly people,
GS1206 - Spec Ops The Line-ENG.indd 58
and children and tried to break through the storm-wall that isolated the city from the rest of the world. According to his last message the mission failed, hundreds suffocated in the sandstorm and all hope was lost. All this had happened six months before the events of Spec Ops: The Line. Leaders had been sitting idly and watching as a once magnificent city perished. Then an unexpected radio message told them that there are survivors and perhaps not all is lost. Instead of launching rescue teams head first into their deaths, they set up an SFOD-D squad to explore the area, establish connection with the survivors and organise evacuation. Captain Martin Walker volunteers as the leader of the three-man squad, because he owes one to the colonel who had saved his life in a mission in Kabul. He is accompanied by Lieutenant Adams, a demolition expert, and Sergeant Lugo, a sniper, who is also responsible for electronics and communication.
THE RIGHT AND LEFT HAND OF THE DEVIL When the story requires us to get separated from the party members, we realise that the entire operation would be a suicide mission without them. This is when we really

Unfortunately, at the time of reviewing (2 weeks before release) the multiplayer servers weren’t ready for the first wave of the players, so I couldn’t take part in the war between the Damned (those who remained faithful to Colonel Konrad) and the Exile (those who stood up against him). I also found it strange that there are no dedicated achievements or trophies for the game’s multiplayer, as if the publisher wasn’t expecting much success from the multiplayer modes developed by Darkside Games. It’s all the more surprising considering that even the beta seemed very promising in this respect: the ziplines used to access the different parts of the map and the sand avalanches that could be let loose upon the enemy, combined with the improvement system of CoD (classes, levelling, perks, etc.) may very well be enough to stick players to their computers/consoles for quite a few hours. Not to mention the sandstorms that could easily turn the most carefully planned strategy into chaos. In addition to the usual Deathmatch (now Mutiny) and King of the Hill (Rally Point) there is also a new one under the name Buried, which allows two four-man teams to fight against one another. Each team has to eliminate three strategic targets to reveal the final objective.
GS1206 - Spec Ops The Line-ENG.indd 59
learn to appreciate Lugo’s humour and Adams’ objectivity. Together they go A through thr tth hr hr truly terrible events that will make m ma a them drop the macho attitude tthat th h had become their second nature during their many years of service, and they would never be able to think and behave the way they did before the operation again. The friendship and camaraderie forged in the line of fire is infiltrated by distrust and paranoia; they start to doubt the importance and the objectives of the mission, and eventually they go as far as questioning Walker’s decisions. After going through especially shocking events they even lose their heads and turn against each other. All in all, they turn out to be human beings instead of the merciless killing machines the army wanted them to become. Their different temperaments become especially important when there is a crucial decision to make. Should they save the civilians taken for execution or should they rescue the CIA agent who may provide essential information about the bloody conflict in Dubai? Adams is begging to save the innocent, while Lugo being worried about the outcome of the mission, would rather rescue their fellow countryman. It is a dead-lock indeed. No matter how we decide, people will die, and their blood will stain our hands... And this is only the beginning. As I’ve already mentioned, without our people we would (and will) be in serious trouble. This sense of vulnerability has rarely before been pictured in a videogame with such accuracy. When it takes only a few lucky hits to get killed, or when the adrenaline pumping into
our bloodstream makes our senses so keen that we sense even the smallest movement, when we pull the trigger without thinking, or use the butt of our rifle to beat the enemy attacking us with a knife to death and shouting madly while doing so. When each shot has to hit and each hit has to kill, because each death brings us closer to the point when the wave of the enemy breaks, when the pressure eases, and the reinforcement, in the form of our faithful comrades, finally arrives. That said, I wouldn’t mind having somewhat more control over them. I would have welcomed the option to decide when and which way they should go and when to take cover, but for some reason the developers allowed only limited control over their movements. All we can do is set the target to be eliminated, ask for flash grenadedistractions, or tell them to move their asses to the other and help him get to his feet before he bleeds to death, which for some reason they don’t do unless they are told so. I found it pretty annoying even in Gears of War that they expect us to help them but they don’t seem to care if we live or die.
FIRE AND BRIMSTONE The story is surprisingly elaborate especially for an FPS, so it may be worth going back to it for a few words. The guys at Yager weren’t simply bragging when they compared their work to the cult movie Apocalypse Now, or more precisely to Heart of Darkness, the novel by Joseph Conrad that the film was based on. The moment when
NEXT MONTH THE ELDER SCROLLS V: SKYRIM - DAWNGUARD Of course, you don’t need an MMO to sink countless hours into a game. Not if you ever played Skyrim, because if you did, you probably spent a decent amount of time running around and doing heroic deeds (and maybe some petty shoplifting too, but let’s not go there right now) in the northern, icy regions of Tamriel. Well, you’ve killed Alduin already, but now a new threat awaits. Allons-y!
LEGO BATMAN 2: DC SUPER HEROES But why be a hero, if you can be a superhero? Well, in the new Lego game you will not only have a chance to play as Batman or Robin (heh, come on, no one wants to be Robin, not even Robin) but also as a lot of other awesome DC supers, like Superman, Green Lantern, the Joker or Lex Luthor.
