Idea Store Events and Activities Come and join us to start your new year with fun and festivities! Over the next two months, we have a whole host of activities and events for you to enjoy from; storytelling, arts and crafts to exhibitions and more. Celebrations include Valentine’s Day, National Storytelling Week, Chinese New Year and many half-term events for children. Hands and Feet 6 January - 4 February An exhibition of images of work and ideas from our knitting group ‘Knit Wits’; focusing on gloves and socks. Idea Store Whitechapel Events Half Term: From Brilliant Books to Favourite Films! ‘The Borrowers’ Tuesday 19 February 2:00 - 4:00pm Arrietty brings danger to her four inch high family of Borrowers when she makes friends with a boy – a ‘human bean’. The Borrowers must avoid the great disaster of being seen. ‘A Little Princess’ Wednesday 20 February 2:00 - 4:00pm When Sara’s father dies, she’s banished to a room in the attic and forced to work as a servant in the boarding school she once attended. ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ Thursday 21 February 2:00 - 4:00pm An apprentice witch, three kids and a conman search for the missing component to a magic spell useful to the defence of Britain during the Second World War.

The Gallery @ Idea Store Whitechapel Polly Gould: Antarctic Archive 14 December - 13 January Gould’s new installation uses archival methods to present an encounter with the romanticised yet contested and fragile continent of Antarctica. Made from a collection of found and original images and texts, the work taps into our fascination with the apparently exotic and unknown. Giorgio Sadotti 18 January - 10 February Sadotti modifies what we think we know in order to allow latent possibilities to surface.The exhibition will include a large scale text installation using a font invented by the artist with the aim of mimicking the process of speech.

‘Matilda’ Friday 22 February 2:00 - 4:00pm Matilda is a clever girl, unappreciated by her parents and terrified of her head teacher, Miss Trunchball. Only her teacher Miss Honey recognises her powers, but even she doesn’t realise quite how powerful Matilda is!

Local History Library & Archives Events Temporary Closure for Building Works Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives is currently closed to the public for building works to replace the Victorian-era roofs and fit a new accessible lift. The library will re-open in spring 2013 on completion of the first phase of roof works. Meanwhile there are plenty of ways you can use our online resources to find out more about local and family history. Visit www.ideastore.co.uk and click on Local History in the sidebar to see our new and expanded digital resources.

Family History Recommended books and sources for researching your family history. Don’t forget you can access Ancestry.com for free at any Idea Store or library site. Coming later in the year, archive staff will be hosting free family history workshops including Tracing Your Somali Roots! Digital Gallery Look at a range of historic images arranged thematically - housing estates, docks, leisure, people, markets, work, streets and buildings. Guides and Booklets You can download our detailed booklet about the history of the Bengali East End and guides for numerous local history walks, all free of charge.
