Flying South Songwriter Abigail Rose Is “Goin’ to the Beach!”

Photography courtesy of Abigail Rose Music

When Abigail Rose received her first guitar for her eleventh birthday, she was hooked on writing and performing music. “It came very naturally to me,” the Nashville native says. “I always loved to talk and to entertain and make people laugh. It grew into the dream I wanted my whole life.” Since then, she has taken the music industry head-on by connecting with other songwriters, perfecting her musical and vocal skills, and performing at events around the country, including the Panama City Beach Seafood and Music Festival in 2012 and 2013. It was at the 2012 event that Resort Collection team members and local friends became enamored with Abigail Rose’s sweet voice and fun-loving stage presence. She has also played during the nearby 30A Songwriters Festival and at Farm Fest in North Carolina, the Georgia Throwdown, and the CMA Music Festival. This seventeen-year-old songbird is working with some of Nashville’s best producers and songwriters to advance her career, and she continues to rise within the country music world. Resort Collection is proud to have worked with her on its new official song, “Goin’ to the Beach!” “Being a songwriter, you have to be observant,” Abigail says. “I’m inspired by all kinds of things for my music: relationships, love, my friends, my family and their stories, and just life in general.”

Abigail got together with two of her fellow writers in Nashville, Daniel Crane and Robert Counts, to create the new “Goin’ to the Beach!” song. “They’re both great songwriters and Daniel grew up near the beach, so I thought it would be fun to get that perspective,” Abigail explains. “When we were writing this song, it definitely made me want to go to the beach, especially since it was only sixteen degrees in Nashville the day we wrote it! Hopefully it will do that for others, too.” Her favorite part of writing and performing, Abigail confides, is inspiring other people with her music the way she has been inspired by artists such as Jack Johnson, Sheryl Crow, and Grace Potter. “I just want to make people smile and enjoy good music,” she says. “When you have a person tell you that a song meant something to them, it’s the best feeling in the world.”

To learn more about Abigail Rose, visit, follow her on Facebook and Twitter (@theabigailrose), and find her performances on YouTube (AbigailRoseMusic). Her five-song EP, See Me Now, is available for download on iTunes. resor | 13

The power of branding! With a brand message like “Goin’ to the Beach!®,” you had better be sure you can deliver on your brand promise. Millions of visitors flock to the sugar-white sands and turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico—more specifically, to Panama City Beach, Florida—every year. The area is known to have some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and by echoing the sentiments of its guests, Resort Collection is able to enhance its brand equity and succinctly capitalize on the main reason people come—to have some fun in the sun! What do people say when they’re asked what they’re doing this summer? “We’re goin’ to the beach!” That sense of fun and anticipation is what Resort Collection wants to show. People get excited when they tell others about their plans, start packing their bags, load the kids into the car.... The beach is waiting, and anything is possible! That’s what the “Goin’ to the Beach!” slogan is all about. With our recent “Goin’ to the Beach TV” Web series and new “Goin’ to the Beach!” jingle by Nashville singer-songwriter Abigail Rose, Resort Collection is bringing the beach to its fans all over the country and even the world! Check out both at

The informal use of the word goin’ is intentional, showing Panama City Beach as a vacation destination with a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. It also plays on the Southern colloquial way of saying “Goin’ to the beach.” Most people do actually say they’re “goin’” to the beach rather than “going” to the beach—and this too sets the branding apart. The culture and experience found at Resort Collection are built around good value, family, the beach, good times, and a casual, relaxed vacation. The beach itself is five-star, and that is what people are looking for when they arrive. It’s about spending quality time with family and friends, reconnecting, and having a great time. It’s about soaking up as much fun in the sun as you can, playing by the pool, getting a tan, and having volleyball games in the spring and summer and tag football games in the fall.... It’s about sand between your toes, ice cream, hot dogs, margaritas, and pink lemonade. It’s about getting buried in the sand and making sand castles with your siblings, kids, or grandkids. It’s about memories that will last a lifetime. It’s about catching sand crabs by moonlight and fishing during the day, body surfing and catching as many waves as you can—then doing it all again the next day! It’s about casting your worries aside—and Goin’ to the Beach!

Firefly Restaurant, located in the Shoppes at Edgewater in Panama City Beach, has been serving up some of the area’s most mouthwatering fine dining selections for years. Owner Dave Trepanier and Executive Chef Paul Stellato strive to create a dining experience for their patrons unlike any other on the beach. “Casual elegance” is the theme, from a romantic dinner under the lights by the Big Tree in the dining room to an evening of catching up with friends over drinks in the Library. Guests will feel right at home while enjoying a five-star meal and great company. Award–winning fresh Gulf seafood, steaks, artisan pizzas, and signature cocktails are what have made Firefly one of the area’s top dining destinations. Firefly is the proud recipient of the Best of the Bay Award, Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, Florida Trend’s Golden Spoon Award from 2010–2013, and is featured on Urbanspoon’s list of “America’s Most Popular High-End Restaurants.” In 2012, Executive Chef Paul Stellato was one of eight Gulf Coast chefs chosen to represent the area and cook for Team USA at the Summer Olympics in London. Firefly was thrilled to announce the newest addition to the restaurant in 2013. To further expand on their award-winning culinary offerings, Firefly

opened a brand-new sushi bar in April and now has more private dining options and additional seating for guests. “We enjoy bringing something different to the Firefly family,” Dave said. “Sushi continues to grow in popularity, and we see more and more of our guests heading down the healthier path and choosing this alternative. The sushi bar offers a different dining experience to our guests and a hip scene where people can gather after the main dining room is closed.” The sushi bar also brings a different vibe to Firefly’s atmosphere. “The music in the sushi bar will be a little more current and youthful,” Dave says. “Everything from country favorites—Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, and Zac Brown—to classic and hard rock acts like Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and Van Halen. The sushi bar stays open until 11:00 p.m. during the summer so people can enjoy an alternative to the usual bar scene.” Along with the new seating in the sushi bar area, Firefly has added four new private rooms to accommodate groups of eight to thirty. These rooms have full audio/visual capabilities and are perfect for meetings or parties. With so much additional space at Firefly, the restaurant will be able to offer more wine dinners, cocktail parties, and cooking classes.

takes place during a holiday weekend. Toby Keith’s finale performance at the 2013 festival drew over thirteen thousand attendees. Lovelady promised, and boy did Gulf Coast Jam deliver. Hold on to your Stetsons; here’s the 2014 headliner lineup: On Friday, August 29, one of the world’s biggest country crossover stars will take the stage. On Friday, August 29, six-time Grammy winner, American Idol winner, and global sensation Carrie Underwood will grace the stage on what promises to be a night to remember. Saturday, August 30, Dierks Bentley—a Nashville favorite with ten number-one hits under his belt—will be performing. Then on Sunday, August 31, Grammy nominee, CMA Entertainer of the Year, and The Voice coach Blake Shelton is sure to deliver a gangbuster grand finale. Dan Rowe echoed Lovelady’s gung ho sentiments. “The Gulf Coast Jam will bring the biggest stars in country music to Panama City Beach for Labor Day Weekend to help kick off our busy lineup of fall events,” Rowe says. “Nashville’s stars have been coming to the area for decades for vacation. Now, we’re putting them to work while they’re here—and giving everyone a chance to enjoy great music and a great beach.” While organizers are awaiting final confirmation on the dozens of performers and sponsors before officially announcing this year’s full lineup, festivalgoers can be assured that they will experience the same stellar stage

production and first-class sponsor tents and refreshment venues as before. “We are dialoguing with several national sponsors for this year’s festival, including Ford and major credit card companies,” Trepanier reveals. Besides bringing megawatt country music stars to Panama City Beach, the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam also gives back to its community in a big way. Last year the festival raised $20,000 in donations, which were shared among Habitat for Humanity, Arnold High School, Naval Support Activity Panama City, Miracle Strip Junior Woman’s Club, and the VFW. Revenue was also generated for local hospitality-driven businesses such as short-term condo rentals, hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, retail shops, and grocery stores, just to name a few. With an anticipated increase in 2014’s attendance, the Panama City Beach community is bound to benefit even more this year.

Ticket sales, accommodations packages with tickets from Resort Collection, and the final lineup will be available online in spring 2014. More information on the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam can be found at, on, and through Twitter (@GulfCoastJam). resor | 51

Cerulean skies, emerald waters, verdant landscapes, and warmth from the amber sun create a coastal masterpiece deserving of respect, and it is out of respect for what nature conceived that ecotourism was born. Long before buzzwords such as ecotravel and responsible tourism were trending around the globe, natives of Panama City Beach deferred to their natural surroundings with a sense of awe and admiration. Perhaps it was dependence on the land and water for food that instilled a great desire in the locals to preserve and nurture this life-sustaining environment that is a living testament to the wonder of nature. While enjoying the unsurpassed beauty of Northwest Florida, if you make a conscious effort to minimize negative effects on the environment and try to have a positive impact on the local culture, you can call yourself a true ecotourist. Getting out and experiencing the sights, sounds, and scents of nature will get your hear t pumping, send your imagination reeling, and set the tone for a perfect getaway. Fishing, hiking, biking, nature photography, swimming, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, boating, and bird-watching are just some of the many activities ecotourists can enjoy in Panama City Beach. And, of course, the beaches are rated 54 | resor

among the top in the nation, allowing for a truly unique experience. This area has something for everyone, from the casual observer to the adrenaline junkie—you will find what you need to make our place your place in the sun!

Panama City Beach Conservation Park In the Panama City Beach Conservation Park, you’ll find twelve looping trails ranging in length from around a half mile to eleven miles that are set aside for walking, biking, wildlife viewing, and bird-watching. Each trail has a unique appeal: some feature boardwalks over the water, which integrate the idyllic dune formation with the forest’s natural topography. The park’s goal is to protect the area’s special environment, ensuring that some of the most beautiful parts of Florida will remain intact for generations to come.

St. Andrews State Park Located in the heart of Panama City Beach, St. Andrews boasts a nationally ranked beach along with an unlimited list of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Whether you’re interested in sunbathing on the beach, snorkeling along the jetties, canoeing and kayaking in the bay or Gulf, or hiking through the forest, there’s something for everyone. It sits between the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Powell, one of the largest coastal dune lakes in Florida. Natural areas range from coastal dunes and salt marshes along the Gulf to freshwater wetlands and scrub oak forests along the lake. RC Real Estate Group Expands Its Horizons For the past few years, with interest rates still hovering at recordlow percentages, the country’s real estate market has been steadily rebounding. As home sales in most areas of the country have been inching higher, the inventory of available houses has gradually been decreasing. Real estate activity in Florida’s Panhandle has experienced a similar trend. In tourist-driven areas, such as Panama City Beach, that have secondary real estate markets with vacation homes and investment properties, realtors have been seeing even higher percentages, especially regarding waterfront properties. When it comes to maneuvering the waters of the area’s real estate market, you definitely want a seasoned captain and crew at the helm—a team that can charter the best course, keep a watchful eye out for changes on the horizon, and deliver you safely and soundly to shore. The team at RC Real Estate Group, formerly Edgewater Beach Realty, is located in the heart of Panama City Beach at Edgewater Beach and Golf Resort and is just the team you’re looking for. Although the name is new, the brokerage has been satisfying the real estate needs of thousands of clients for over thirty years. According to broker Ric Holt, who has been in the real estate industry for thirty years, “We decided to rename the agency due in part to the common misconception that our brokerage only handles real estate within the confines of Edgewater Beach Resort. Of course, we’re still the go-to experts on real estate sales for Edgewater, as well as for Resort Collection’s other eight properties, but our territory extends well beyond the boundaries of these resorts. We conduct real estate transactions on properties as far east as Mexico Beach and as far west as Destin.” The rebranding also coincides with the agency’s objective to gradually expand its areas of expertise, enabling it to better serve its clients. Like its predecessor, RC Real Estate Group is a full-service real estate company that specializes not only in residential sales of single-family homes,

condominiums, and homesites, but also in commercial sales, leasing, and property management. “As the local real estate market continues to gain strength and momentum, RC Real Estate Group will steadily broaden its scope in areas where sound opportunities present themselves,” Holt explains. “Our growth approach has been—and will continue to be—one that is careful and calculated. We’re a company with the mind-set of a marathoner rather than a sprinter.” What sets RC Real Estate Group apart from every other realtor in the area? Besides being experts on both commercial and residential real estate, Holt says that everyone on his team of nearly twenty realtors is first and foremost a marketing specialist. “Each team member possesses an innate ability to determine the buyer’s profile and then customizes a specific marketing strategy to attract that particular customer,” Holt elaborates. “Unlike many realtors who get listings and do blanket advertising to the masses or by zip codes, we net it down to a much more specific buyer profile.” Holt also says that local ownership of the company has had a very positive impact on the success of RC Real Estate Group and members of his team personally—and, in turn, on their clients. “The owners aren’t a big corporate conglomerate living thousands of miles away; they are a small group of very good people. Relationships are very important to them—it’s not just about the money. While profit is important for any business, they truly care about our clients and our team,” Holt says. “They give me great latitude to do what I think is right. I really like working for a company with a conscience, Ric Holt, Broker where a handshake is still as good as your word. It RC Real Estate Group Edgewater Beach Realty motivates me and my team to work even harder.”

Rock ’n’ Roll Photography by Nikki Hedrick

Like a fine wine, the annual Panama City Beach Seafood and Music Festival just gets better with age—thirty-seven years and counting, to be exact. On a beautiful harvest moon weekend in October 2013, the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, and the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau once again teamed up with local restaurateurs, businesses, charities, and volunteers to present the Panama City Beach Seafood and Music Festival. Record crowds flocked to the main event at the newly built state-of-the-art Aaron Bessant Park Amphitheater to celebrate the area’s legendary seafood and coastal lifestyle, not to mention to hear a few rock ’n’ roll legends. “It was a wonderful event that really showcased the new Aaron Bessant Park, which opened last spring,” says Dan Rowe, president and CEO of the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. The festival kicked off on a Thursday evening with the annual UNwineD event, held at Aaron Bessant Park. The evening’s crisp 60 | resor

fall air was filled with the sounds of popping corks and lively tunes performed by charismatic singer/guitarist Sean Flood of the Panhandlers, a popular local band. Over two hundred attendees mingled, toasted, and tasted a selection of award-winning wines, craft beers, and delicious tapas and desser ts prepared by area chefs. Par ticipating restaurants for the evening included Fishale Taphouse and Grill, Sharky’s Beachfront Restaurant, Runaway Bay Caribbean Grill, Firefly, and Hammerhead Fred’s. On Friday and Saturday, the above restaurants featured boatloads of fresh assor ted seafood prepared every way imaginable. Adventurous eaters lined up for shark on a stick, Hawaiian-style ahi tuna poke, deep-fried frog legs, and alligator. Smok ‘n’ Butts BBQ and Shipwreck Island Catering Company rounded out the something-for-everyone festival menu. Spor ts fans flocked to the adjacent Coors Light Mobile Spor ts Bar, which debuted at last year’s festival with a sleek, wraparound bar and four teen flat-screen TVs, so they could catch all the action on the field and in the park. Look for this popular par ty “hot spot” to be a familiar site at future festivals. On Saturday morning, the reel festival action began at Capt. Anderson’s Marina, which sponsored a plethora of waterfront activities and competitions with proceeds benefiting three local children’s charities. All ages participated in the deep-sea and bay fishing tournaments: Capt.

Anderson’s had made it their lofty mission to get every fishing pole (and spear) in Bay County in the water. Their zealous efforts paid off—nearly two hundred lionfish were hauled in during the Second Annual Lionfish “Lion Tamer” Dive Tournament. Congratulations to last year’s winner, thirteen-year-old Courtney Galbreath of the Diver’s Den team, who brought in a whopping total of twenty-three lionfish! Capt. Anderson’s Marina furthered its efforts to inform the public about the destructive yet delicious lionfish and held free cooking demonstrations and tastings by Captain Ron featuring this emerging seafood delicacy. Just as the sun star ted setting at Aaron Bessant Park, the stars came out to play. The stellar lineup of musical talent brought festivalgoers in record numbers. VIP tickets, which included special perks such as preferred parking, stage-front seating, complimentary drinks, and access to stage-side seating, had sold out weeks in advance, and more than eleven thousand festival admission tickets were sold throughout the weekend. “I think the festival accomplished two goals,” says Lance Allison, president and CEO of the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce. “It brought people into town and at the same time provided locals with great enter tainment. It also far exceeded the expectations we had for this year: attendance was double what I was going to consider a success. We’re ecstatic about the turnout.”

Friday’s festival rocked out to Nashville singer/songwriter Abigail Rose, popular New Orleans rockers Better Than Ezra, and headliner Collective Soul. Saturday’s sizzling roster drew even bigger crowds with Ed Roland and the Sweet Tea Project, the Andy Velo Band, and classic rock ’n’ roll favorites Loverboy and Foreigner. “The success of last year’s festival highlights is why the tourist development council invested its first BP marketing suppor t funds into the park after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill,” Rowe says. “It is a lasting legacy. Having such a nice performance venue will allow us to create tourism oppor tunities, like the seafood festival and other big concer ts, for a lifetime.”

With excitement still lingering from last year’s event, plans are currently under way for the 2014 Panama City Beach Seafood and Music Festival. Details regarding festival dates, the calendar of events, advance tickets, and condo/ticket packages will be forthcoming. For more information, visit resor | 61

Laser Body Sculpting with Smartlipo TriPlex Losing Inches and Contouring Your Body by Design

By Dr. Kimberly Moskowitz | Photography provided by Cosmetic Vein & Laser Center

“I eat mostly organic, I watch my caloric intake, I exercise three or four days a week, and I just have to believe there’s a difference between growing old gracefully and ‘giving up’ on myself.”

In today’s society, people live at a frenetic pace, having little time to take care of themselves. When we’ve maxed ourselves out with work, kids, diet, and exercise, many of us still look in the mirror and sigh, thinking, “If I could only get rid of my love handles, ab flab, sagging arms, neck wattle, thunder thighs—” Just fill in the blank with the body part that frustrates you most. I saw a forty-nine-year-old patient once for her bulging thighs, heavy waist, and baggy upper arms. She perfectly described what I hear every day: “I eat mostly organic, I watch my caloric intake, I exercise three or four days a week, and I just have to believe there’s a difference between growing old gracefully and ‘giving up’ on myself.” Smartlipo TriPlex was designed for this type of person—the man or woman who works reasonably hard at being and staying healthy but is not willing to just ‘give up’ on feeling good about herself (or himself).

People are genetically gifted with a body type that takes shape sometime around adolescence. It morphs again (in women) after childbirth and continues to change with the inevitable downward pull of gravity and aging. For many, these body dysmorphisms are subtle or have little impact on self-esteem and overall well-being. If you are one of these people, consider yourself blessed. Most women and some men, however, have at least one thing that keeps them uneasy in a bathing suit or

from feeling content with their physique. Because of this, cellulite and body contouring are hot topics, and Smartlipo has become a fat-melting fantasy.

In an hour or two, under local anesthesia and using a tiny laser fiber, Smartlipo destroys unwanted fat cells while smoothing out cellulite and tightening overlying skin. The liquefied excess is gently suctioned out of the area to create a new shape with soft, natural contours that redefine your waistline, your thighs, your arms, your jawline—and your life. The results are permanent because the fat cells are taken away and the body never regenerates them. Understanding how your body creates and distributes fat and cellulite is essential to understanding why Smartlipo TriPlex is today’s most amazing body contouring miracle. Up until puberty, your body makes new fat cells that are genetically programmed to accumulate in certain areas. In some people, it distributes in the thighs; in others, it goes to the abdomen or neck. When you gain or lose weight, you notice it predominantly in those areas. At the end of puberty, that “fat making” machine shuts off and the number of fat cells (adipocytes) in your body remains the same for the rest of your life. From then on, fat cells don’t come and go; they just get bigger or smaller. The distribution and proportion will never change unless you physically remove cells from that area. Laser liposuction is designed to redistribute fat and reshape the body with slimmer and more appealing curves. Downtime is minimal and most patients return to work in a few days with only mild bruising and soreness that lasts about a week.Volume reduction and contouring results are seen immediately, and skin tightening is seen in about two or three weeks.

What makes laser liposuction better than other “fat removal” devices? Traditional liposuction forcefully breaks up pockets of tough fat that are then sucked out through a large metal tube. Neither traditional liposuction nor fat-freezing devices address the structure of cellulite; thus, both can leave behind loose, saggy skin, making cellulite look even worse. The Smartlipo TriPlex and Cellulaze systems harness three specific laser wavelengths to safely liquefy fat deposits, seal blood vessels during the procedure, and stimulate collagen to tighten and lift overlying skin. Smartlipo TriPlex has an unmatched safety profile, causing minimal swelling and bruising. Slow, gentle, and accurate movements are used to break up cellulite and permanently remove unwanted pockets of fat, resulting in firmer, tighter, and smoother skin not seen with other fat-reducing devices. If you gain or lose weight, you will continue to maintain this new ideal shape and proportion.

It is important to know that choosing laser liposuction doesn’t mean “giving in,” and it doesn’t mean “giving up” a healthy diet and regular exercise. Most of life’s important answers come from surrendering to the peace that comes with knowing how to create balance—an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain steady.

Sometimes we must realize that things do not always balance by themselves. Our bodies, like all things, are imperfect, and sometimes we can create balance with strong will, diet, and exercise, but sometimes we need a laser fiber and Smartlipo TriPlex to help us navigate the curves.
